Low Ming Choo – Profile

Dear friends,

I was delighted to read about this club in the ST 20 July 2008.  A check on the website tells of a vibrant group of happy people with diverse interests and lots of energy.  This is just what I have been looking for since I retired from work a few years ago – an opportunity for like-minded people to gather and make good use of the leisure that we have worked so long and hard for.

I am 62 with two grown-up children.  I have spent more than 20 years as an educator and10 years in publicity publishing.  When my younger child graduated a few years ago, I decided it was time to quit my formal job and for other things in life. My interests are quite sedentary – reading, experimental cooking, meditation.  My husband, 64, and I have done some leisurely traveling and did some ‘serious’ courses the last few years.  Terence’s idea of short stays in Thailand and the neighboring countries is appealing.

I have been exploring the concept of “ Aging in place”.  It is a term used in the States for the system that caters to elderly people who prefer to grow old in the comfort of their homes, versus living in institutions. This involves preparing their homes for convenient use as they age; having the relevant essential services, like, house care and medical care within easy call.  With the system in place, the elderly can continue to live independently in familiar surroundings and friends for as long as life permits them.  Any one here among us, is interested in exploring this concept with me?  I will draw up a framework for discussion.

Congratulations to the pioneers for bringing forth the SilverHairs Club and the energetic members who sustain it. I look forward to your next gathering.  I am due for a knee operation this afternoon and hope it will recover enough for me to join all of you on the 17th.  Otherwise I can read all about the meeting on the Forum.

Warm regards,
Ming Choo

  1. Low Ming Choo.
Welcome to SHC. “Aging in place” sounds interesting, but are you thinking of a business venture in this area?
Good luck on your knee operation. I presume it’s a keyhole surgery? I had one done last year and it took quite a while to get back to normal activities. Hope you recover soon.
    Cheers

  2. Hi, Ming Choo,

Welcome to the big family of SHC. Wishing you recovery soon on your knee operation & hope to meet you in the gathering on 31 Aug 08.

    Cheers!

  3. Hello Ming Choo

A very warm welcome to you. SHC is a fruitful place to look for like-minded people to fraternize with. I have interest in the idea of ‘Aging in place’ and look forward to joining your discussion group on this topic.

Would also like to wish you a speedy recovery from your knee op.

    Have fun in SHC.

    Regards,
    Jassmine

  4. Hi Ming Choo

Glad you are joining the SHC family, as stated by you , after reading the article in the Straits Times press by our founder, Terence.Hope that your knee operation will be recovered in time to join us at the EAST COAST PARKWAY for a morning breadfast and interact with other members at Burger King or by the sea-front enjoying the sea-breeze with your breadfast.

As you had stated that in U.S.the old people preferred to grow old in the comfort of their own homes, would not be in a good sense , as senility will set in. It is better to be out of the homes taking part in activities , rather than to face the four walls.

If your hubby is not a member as yet, do let him sign up, so that both of you can enjoy the activities together.

  5. Hi Ming Choo

Welcome to SHC. Glad that you have found a community who besides having fun are able to share view on different topics.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Do take Care

    Cheers

  6. Dear Mary, Judy, Jasmine, Maureen and Anges,
Thank you for your kind get-well wishes and warm welcome messages. I hope to meet you all soon.
Yes, Mary, it is the key hole operation. I had one knee done two years ago and it did take a while to recover. The op yesterday was a scope on the other knee to check if I should need another similar op. Thank goodness, the knee is ok.
Jasmine, thanks for your interest in “Aging in Place”. I will follow up on this.
Hi Ron, Guess I would be able to join you all for the next monthly meet at the ECP. Yes my husband, Jun Han has also registered as a member. He leaves me to do most of the ‘talking’ for us.

  7. Ooops, Mary,
I missed out a point in your mail regarding “Aging in Place” in my earlier reply. No business venture for me, I wish I still have the energy. My intention is bring together ideas, suggestions, recommendations of service providers etc, so that a one-stop ‘centre’ of reliable honest service providers can be set up for our convenient use. Will provide more details as soon as I feel less groggy from the effects of the GA.

    Warm regards,
    ming choo

  8. Welcome on board the SHC family Ming Choo. Like Ron said, if your husband is not a member yet, do get him to sign on as well so that both of you can join in the fun with us.

Do keep us posted of your surgery and here’s wishing you ‘speedy recovery’. I’ve been contemplating for a long time but didn’t have the guts to do it yet. Look forward to meeting you in one of the SHC events. Regards, Lisa

  9. Ming Choo,
Good to hear that your scope was ok.
I’d like to hear more about your idea of having a one stop centre of reliable service providers.
You take care and rest that knee. We’ll meet when I return in mid Sept for sure.
    Cheers

  10. Hi Ming Choo
I am also a new member of the club and looking forward to meeting new friends. First let me wish you all the best in your knee operation and a quick recovery so that you can join in the activities of the club. You mentioned that you and your hubby have done a bit of leisure travelling. Can I assume it is of the ‘free & easy’ type.Well perhaps we can team up later as travelling partners after we get to know one another better. My wife and I have been to quite a few places during the last few years, namely US, Eastern Europe,Switzerland,Egypt Australia and NZ, the Caribbean Cruise(this is the cruise of a lifetime)and some other Asean countries. In fact we have booked for the 8D-All Vietnam tour in late October.
See you in future at one of our gatherings.

    Regards
    Roy & Lilian

  11. Dear Roy and Lillian,
Yes,it is a good idea to travel in fours if we go F&E. Also an exchange of traveling ideas and how we make the arrangements will be useful. Two Aprils ago we used a China agency to arrange a 3–week tour of Yunnan for two of us with a guide and a driver. It was a good tour. Can be more interesting if there is another couple traveling together. We went from Kunming right up to the Tibetan border and back.

Like to know a little more about your Vietnam tour in Oct. A guided tour?

    Warm regards,
    Mingchoo and JunHan
