Jacqueline Han – Profile

I am amazed at what one man can do. And I meant – the one man who had created and founded this silver hairs club. Terence Seah – please take a bow! You have founded this silver hairs club providing opportunities for people to connect and to learn from each other. More importantly, the opportunities to enjoy ourselves together.

Hi Everyone, I’d like to introduce myself, briefly – I am a practical and introspective person. I live my life in a minimalistic, no frills manner. That could be because my growing up years were frugal. I grew up in an attap hut built on stilts on swampy land. By some lucky twist of fortune – life’s events have somehow unfolded in my favour. Society uses material possessions as yardsticks of success. If I use the same yardsticks? I think I am not doing so badly…

I chose to retire early last year. I wanted a change of environment. I wanted to explore other opportunities. With that in mind – I had spent several months in Melbourne. While there, I had volunteered at a charitable organization, and had taken up a TEFL course. (TEFL stands for Teach English as a Foreign Language.) Yes – I am a recently certified TEFL teacher. I am toying around with the idea of teaching English in China. Or – I could volunteer to teach English to the underprivileged. I am excited at the prospect and the possibility. But I am not adamant about it. I go with the flow – depending on which way the river flows….

My “psycho-analyst” had told me that my “material success was not all just luck” – and that I should give myself credit for having clambered out of the poverty pit. That is the other thing about me – I don’t give myself enough credit. Generally, we tend to underestimate ourselves. This could be the result of our Asian upbringing: our parents usually do not approve of any “self praise”. Yep – we have been deeply ingrained to be modest about our achievements. So much so, that we forget to pat ourselves on our backs.

Career wise: my younger days were in the banking industry. In later years, I was an administrator with a MNC. At present, gainfully unemployed.
Interest wise: I enjoy keeping fit, reading, writing and travels.
I love to read – books on philosophy and psychology, and the mysteries of life – known scientifically or unknown as yet. For lighter reading, I love science fictions to tickle my imagination, books on self-development; or health and nutrition.
Travels – I love natural beautiful scenery rather than man-made buildings. Although I must say that I was quite impressed with several centuries old cathedrals and Egypt’s pyramids.
I enjoy my moments of solitude. I seem to need more “alone time” than many people I know.  I enjoy doing absolutely nothing. I could be seated on a bench in crowded Orchard Road, or seated on a swing in a quiet playground.

To keep fit and healthy – I exercise daily by climbing stairs to the 19th floor of a tall building. It is an easy way to exercise, no need to book a court (for tennis/badminton), rain or shine I can still climb the stairs. I also have a simple diet regime whenever the pounds creep up on me. If any one is interested, I’d be happy to share it with you.
I look forward to meeting like-minded members during the monthly get-together. Till then, I wish you all the best. May the rest of your life, be the best of your life.

  1. Hi Jacqueline….your profile’s very interesting! I just logged in (haven’t visited the forum for many days) and straightaway I see your post…Jacqueline Han….the name is power to me (btw that’s the name of my previous boss) and Han brings to mind the no nonsense mongolian tribe…don’t ask me why.
Hope to meet u soon but don’t know how that’s possible as I hardly join the SHC gatherings…:-)))
Yah..wanted to say this…should u teach in China and u need an assistant to collect the books, clean the blackboard, man the class etc etc…pls remember me..but only some years from now. I hve some years to go before I touch retirement age!! :-)

  2. June Lim – I “envy” you. You have such a sense of humour! I don’t have it! I cannot be funny – even if my life depends on it!

Pardon me for being inquisitive – why aren’t you joining the SHC gatherings? No time? Don’t work too hard young lady. I found out late in life that I should have made time to “Stop to smell the roses along the way…” Oops forgive me. I am preaching. I hate it whenever I give “unsolicited advice”.

Yah – I will keep you in mind when I need “an assistant to collect books, clean the blackboard” Before then, I hope to c u at one of the gatherings! Keep well.

  5. Hi Jennifer

Welcome to SHC. What an interesting profile. I share several of your interests, like: voluntary service, writing, “doing absolutely nothing” and etc. For me, “doing nothing” is day-dreaming which I find such a luxury and quite often, productive. Hope to meet you one day and have a sharing session.

Wishing you a happy and fruitful time in SHC.

    Regards,
    Jassmine

Lilian Teo @ #4 – Certainly I remember u. U are the gentle lady neatly dressed with a pretty scarf. Sat in front of me during dinner time, after the self-development talk. Hope to catch up with u again during the next get-together!

Maureen Lee @ #3 – my name is Jacqueline Han. Not Jennifer. Thank you for the warm welcome. C U at the next gathering.

Jassmine @ #5 – such a nice name and spelt with an extra “S”! Will U be at the gathering on 18 Nov? If yes, C U there!

Catherine HO @ #7 – thanks for the invitation. But I do not play badminton. So Sorry. Hope to C U on the 18th Nov gathering.

Charles Wee @ #8 – Hi. It’s nice of you to drop a note. I will try to join the tree-top walk. Not sure yet.

Norlinda @ #9 – I have read some of your comments on some “historical posts”. U are a really funny lady. I also “can imagine the person u are…” Someone once told me that, we automatically form an impression of another person (good or bad) within the first 30 seconds of meeting. I do agree with that observation, but I must add that sometimes the first impression can be wrong. Betul tak? Catch up with u on the 18 Nov! C U soon.

Remember kunming is 365 days spring! cool weather everyday! good and inexpensive food, hotspring spa, organic farms etc. a shangrila for long and good life!

  12. Hi Wee Jee and Dolly!
Thank you for the warm welcome.
There are many different diets out there on the “diet market”. Some diets are “meal replacement liquid formula”, some diets requires “popping slimming pill” such as “appetite suppressant”, or “carbo/fat inhibitor”.

Some of them work some of the time. Some don’t work at all. Almost all diet leaves us feeling hungry, and sometimes tired and weak.

I use this diet plan, because it is simple, cheap and easy to follow. And it worked well for me. In my younger days, I was a slim 50kg on a 5ft 4in frame. When I hit 45 I weighed 55kg. After that, my weight just keep piling up till 65kg.

Thru trial and error, I found that this “egg-white” diet had worked well for me. I had shed 10kg (now I am 55kg. It is NOT a “magic crash diet”. If you follow the diet plan, you will lose about half to one kilo per week. Just to mentally prepare you for it: the first week, you will not see much weight loss on the weighing scale. This is because your body has only just started to “burn the existing body fat”. Don’t be discouraged. End of second week, you will see a 1 kilo loss.

It’s the egg-white and fibre diet. Here is the diet plan:

    Breakfast:
3 hard boiled eggs, remove the yolk, eat the egg-white.
    Add pepper/salt to taste.
    One/two apple/s.
    Lunch:
4 hard boiled eggs, remove the yolk, eat the egg-white.
    Add pepper/salt to taste.
    One carrot/cucumber, or both.
    Dinner:
5 hard boiled eggs, remove the yolk, eat the egg-white.
    Add pepper/salt to taste.
    One tomato/cucumber/carrot, or all.

    Preferably eat the vegetables uncooked.
But if you don’t care for cold veg, you may replace the tomato/cucumber/carrot with broccoli/chye sim/sio peh chye.
Steam the veg, add a dash of soya sauce if necessary.

If u feel peck-ish at 9pm or 10pm, can have another two egg-white.

Drink any amount of tea/herbal tea, no sugar.
If you must have coffee, it’s OK, but no sugar, use low fat milk if needed.
Drink water through out the day. Take sips every now and then.

Do not to snack btwn meals, but if you must snack – that is you feel hunger pangs, or crave for a chocolate bar/doughnut, try this –
Eat a handful of baked/roasted almonds (10-12 nuts). Unsalted.
Drink a glass of water. This combination makes you feel full, and stops food cravings.

You may modify this diet to suit yourself. If you are a big and tall person who is fairly active, and you still feel hungry after each meal, you may wish to add one more egg-white to each meal.

Do weigh in before you start the diet, and thereafter, once a week. To be accurate and consistent, do the weighing at around the same time, say in the morning before breakfast.

Disclaimer – I am no expert on diet and nutrition. I am merely sharing my weight loss experience with you. Please do consult your doctor regarding any health issues you may have.

Good luck and best wishes to both of you. Let me know whether this diet works for you.

  13. Hi Feztus! wow. wow again. wow wow….

“kunming is 365 days spring! cool weather everyday! good and inexpensive food, hotspring spa, organic farms etc. a shangrila for long and good life” sounds like heaven to me. Please do tell me more.

I am thinking of visiting China – the usual package tour to Shanghai/hangchou/suchou/Beijing/xian/guilin on or after 24 Nov. Some friends discouraged me saying that it is winter time. But I do not wish to delay the trip till March next year…. Appreciate any input you may have. Thanks much.

  14. hi jac, if you are going for the regular tour package, i guess the tour company will do a good job.

if you are keen of doing yunnan for a free and flexible trip sometime mid december, let me know. yes it is winter, so if you do come you have to be ready for relatively cold weather. but you will need a kaki along as some sectors we don’t have a group.

email me at ethniceast@gmail.com, if you are really keen and can get out of your package tour or maybe you do a domestic flight to yunnan from wherever you are in china during that time.

    feztus

  15. Wee Jee –
You are most welcome. Please let me know if this works for you too. If you have doubts or further questions, please ask.
    All the best! Cheers.

  16. Hi Jacqueline,

    Welcome onboard!

I have seen your post on the trip to Yunnan on the 18th Nov. Very interested but have already firmed up Chiangmai’s trip, leaving SIN on the 20th Nov.

Will you on joining in the walk this SAT or cycling on the 15th Nov?

    See you soon!

  17. Hi Susan, Thank you for the warm welcome.
The Yunnan trip departs 18 DECEMBER. NOT 18 Nov. If you are keen, u can still join us! Think about it?

I was keen to join the walk this SAT. But that day appeared quite packed. I may not be able to join the walk. I’ll definitely attend the gathering on 18 Nov. I’ll be there for the 5pm FX talk, and stay on for the evening gathering. Look forward to C U there!

  18. Hi Jacqueline,

Gathering on the 18th, not sure as I will be having a gathering with my kids on that nite before I leave for CM on the 20th. Nevermind, if we don’t meet that nite, in SHC, there are alot of opportunity to meet, like Monthly Gathering, Walking, Cycling, etc.

Oh yah! regarding trip to Yunnan, maybe next year. Pls keep me informed so that I can plan, especially $$$, haha.

    susan tan

  19. Hi Susan,
Enjoy yourself with your kids. They are the most precious things in our lives, aren’t they? Have fun at the CM trip!

Will update all SHC regarding the Yunnan trip. I look forward to catching up with u soon.

  20. Hi Jacqueline,

Seem to be interesting about the diet plan, but is it too much of egg for one day, approx 12 eggs white a day, is this a ongoing plan or for a period of time.

    Josephine

  21. Hi Josephine –
From my personal experience, I have used this plan for about 4 months. I took that long, ’cause some days I was “off the diet”. After I have achieved my weight loss target, I’d substitute one or two normal meals with the “egg-white meal”. This helps to maintain my “ideal” weight. Regarding your concern, I have read up on some nutritional website that the protein in 9 egg-white is not excessive. Certainly, one should practice “moderation in all things” whether food or physical exercise. And should you have any health issues, please remember to consult your doctor before u embark on this diet plan. I’d be happy to hear from u – Let me know if it works for u too. All the best!

  22. Hi Jacqueline,

I’ve been wanting to comment on this “egg-white meal” diet for a long time but was unable to log in. Are you still practising it?

I was sharing it with a close relative who is in Renal Nursing and she cautioned me against it because I would be overloading my kidneys with proteins. I hope that you would be more cautious about continuing with such a diet as having kidney problems is a painful and expensive affair.

    Cheers!
    Angela.

  23. Hi Angela!

Thank you for your concern. And your words of caution.

Yes- i did inform interested “dieters” to ensure that they do not have pre-existing condition that would “endanger”
    their well-being.

I am maintaining my “ideal weight” fairly well at the moment, and no longer takes egg-whites 3 meals a day.

I do have egg whites for lunch now and then. It helps me to reduce my carbo intake, and personally, I find that protein is rather lacking within an asian diet.

Again – thank you for your concern. Keep in touch. Hope to meet you during one of SHC’s gatherings.

  24. Hi Jacqueline,

I read your interesting profile, nice to see you here.
I think both of our characters may be quite similar if you have read mine.

I am not very active in the SHC activities but some how rather, hope to meet you some day.

    Take care!
