Check this out – Laughter Exercise

Hi Folks – Gong Xi Fa Cai! May all your wishes come true!

I meant to post this notice in Dec last year. But anticipating that SHC folks would be busy with preparing for the festivity of Christmas, I decided to wait a while. Then, came January, and again, I did not post this notice thinking that SHC folks would be busy preparing and celebrating CNY.
Then, in Feb, there will be the Yunnan trip led by Feztus, and come March/April there are other trips led by other SHC folks. If I don’t post the notice now, I guessed I never will.  I was aiming to have the maximum impact with this notice. That is – to reach as many SHC folks as possible.
Here is what I would like to share with you:

Subject: Laughter Exercise

  • Venue: Horticultural Park (Hort Park), 33 Hyderabad Road, Off Alexandra Road.  Go to the “Circle of Bamboo”.
  • (Buses to Alexandra Road: 51, 57, 93, 97, 100, 166, 175)
  • Date and Time: Every Tues 6.30p.m.
  • Dress code: comfortable footwear, casual ‘cool’ clothes.

Reminder: Those of you who are mosquito magnets, please remember to use insect repellant.
More info: Hort Park is a beautiful and peaceful garden. You may wish to take a stroll before or after the exercise. It starts promptly at 6.30p.m. If you are 15 minutes late, you’ve missed half the exercise.
This exercise is suitable for whom?

Any one – young or old, male or female, fat or thin. It is a light and fun exercise. There were families who came in three generations: grandparents, parents and their children. There was an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair pushed by his elderly loving wife. There were old retirees, and there were young adults coming in after work hours.

Because it is free and easy, (no registration required), sometimes the crowd was quite big. More than 30 people. Some Tuesdays, only a handful turned up – about 10 people.

Other info: We all know that “laughter is the best medicine”.
This laughter exercise originated in India, and has spread to the rest of the world.  Some business corporation paid big bucks to hire the trained laughter exercise facilitators, to teach their employees to laugh away their stress, and thereby, be more productive.

And guess what?
This lady, a trained laughter exercise facilitator, is conducting the exercises for FREE! Yes – FREE! FREE! FREE! She is in her sixties, very zesty, warm and friendly. I later learned that she started this free laughter exercise program in Sep 2008. Make time to check this out. You have “nothing to lose, all to gain”.

If you’d like me to show you where is the “Circle of Bamboo”, I can meet you at the lobby to lead you there. Email me jacqhan@gmail.com

  1. Hi Vivian,

If coming by car, and via ECP, exit Telok Blangah Rd, then hit Alexandra Rd. Hyderabad Rd is just before the Depot Rd junction.

If coming by bus, take any of these buses to Alexandra Rd: 51, 57, 93, 97, 100, 166, 175. Depending on which direction you are coming from, alight at the bus-stop before or after the junction of Depot Rd. There is a prominent sign that reads SP Jain, and also a Tree-top overhead bridge. You can’t miss it.

If coming this Tuesday, and you need me to show you the way to the Circle of Bamboo, I’ll meet you at 6.15pm, at the lobby. I’ll sms my mobile number to you. For security reasons, members are advised NOT to give their mobile numbers in this forum.

I look forward to meet you.

  2. Hi Jacqueline,

Kong Xi Fa Cai to you, too, may you have a good Ox year ahead.

Thank you so much for sharing this interesting exercise, I have heard about it but have not tried that before, it would be nice to join you for this exercise.

I will email you separately if I am able to come next Tuesday.

    Best Regards!

  3. Hi Nancy Major!

It’s good to hear from you. I’ve met you during the “self-development talk” last year, organized by EO Robert Quek.

I’m usually bad at remembering names, but I remembered yours because of your unusual name “Major”.

Thank you for your CNY wishes. May you have a spectacular Ox year! Do drop in at the Hort Park if time permits. If you can’t make it this Tuesday, come next Tuesday!

    Till then, keep smiling!

  4. Hi Jacqueline,

Its nice to hear from you, too.

I am so sorry that I’m bad in remembering names, too.I am glad that you remember me, thanks for that.

Yes, I will let you know when I am able to come for the Laughter Exercise, will see you then.

Best Regards & take care, ya!

  5. Hi Andrew!

It’s good to hear from you!

Yep, 30 ppl was a bit crowded for the space enclosed by the circle of bamboo. This did not detract from the exercise objective which was to “laugh out loud”. Look forward to seeing you there.

    Happy New Year. Keep smiling.

  6. Hi Nancy Major!

This is a really “free and easy exercise program”, literally. Feel free to drop in any Tuesdays, whenever time permits or whenever you feel so inclined. Till then, keep in touch!

  7. Hi Folks!

I have received several emails from interested folks making enquiries, and have replied individually already. This message is for those who are interested in this laughter exercise, but are too shy to ask:

Some of you feel pai-seh, and afraid that after making appointment to meet me at the lobby, something may crop up at work and you can’t make it at the last minute.

My solution to this concern: no need to make appointment with me.

On the Tuesday that you feel “up-to-it”, simply drop in to the Hort Park. If it’s your first time there, plan to arrive around 6pm. Stroll around, look for the circle of bamboo. You won’t miss it. If you cannot find it, just stroll around till 6.30pm. You will hear a loud and resounding laughter “HO HO, HA HA HA”. That is how Ms Zaibun (the facilitator) starts the exercises. Walk towards the laughter. You will see a group of people laughing merrily. That’s us. Don’t be shy. Just walk right in. Ms Zaibun will smile and nod at you, and say “welcome, welcome, please join us…” What do you do? smile back, and just “fall in steps”, and join in the next laugh!

And for those who need me to meet you at the lobby and bring you to the circle of bamboo: Please do not feel pai-seh. I am happy to take you there. Email jacqhan@gmail.com, we will exchange mobile phone numbers for sms-es or phone calls. It is perfectly alright to cancel your plans at the last minute. No worries!

I hope this message covers most of your concerns. Happy New Year!

  8. Hi Jacqueline,

Will like to give it a try this evening. C u later.

Ah Nee, is your laughing gas cylinder still full? I know you are always laughing even without this exercise. You want to give it a try? Or maybe you need it this time, huh? Cos your father is not too well and you might just need to top up your cylinder. Keep on laughing OK.

  9. Hi Lina!

A happy and prosperous CNY. I look forward to see u this evening. For your information:

It’s highly unlikely, but in the event that it starts to rain around 6ish, this exercise will be conducted at the lobby itself.

I hope all is well with Ah Nee’s father, and that Ah Nee can find time to check this out.

    C U soon.

  10. Hi Jac & Lina,

“Laughter is the best medicine”. This is indeed very true! Laughter boosts the immune system, and lessens pain. Laughing also reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and has a beneficial effect on our overall well being. Plus, it’s free! During the 90s, I remembered this humorous colleague of mine who always joked and made us laugh non-stop. He made the working environment so enjoyable, fun & relaxing. And during that period when he was around, we seldom fall sick, though very often we need to work long hours. So I see the power of “Laughter”. Btw how to make my father laugh huh?

Lina, tell me your experience after your 1st laughing exercise. :)

    Ah Nee

  11. Anee, you have the answer to yr question “how to make my (your) father laugh?”

Find & seek out that wonderful colleague of yours, make him yr bf so that he has the best of reason to visit you & stay in r house to crack jokes to yr dad.

If that still doesnt work, get yr dad to change into cleeveless singlets and tickle him on 1 armpit.and both armpits if he still doesnt laugh.

Smthg is really very wrong if despite all thses he is still not laughing. But everything is not lost. i have a puppy you can borrow. This dog has a habit of climbing on my head and lick my ears from behind. You know me…..I am very stern by nature but that silly jack rascal makes me laugh and laugh like hell.

If yr dad still doesnt laugh then……………………………………………………………………..please leave him amlone bcos obviously he chooses not to laugh and all of us will have to respect him for his choice as much as I respect you for laughing sometimes for no reason………..heeehee.

  12. Hi Jacqueline Han,

As this laughter club is something NEW to me, I am curious to know how it works.

I will meet Lina and you at the lobby at 6pm sharp at the Hort Park.

The rest of you esp. Tim and Ah Nee , hope you can join us at this laughter club and “LAUGH” it all out. Ha! hA!

  13. Hi Folks! Update on laughter exercise yesterday:
It was cloudy at 4 something, and it appeared as if it would rain. I thought the number of ppl who’ll turn up will be small, as ppl are “still celebrating CNY”.

I was pleasantly mistaken: about 30 ppl turned up for the exercise; and it didn’t rain!

4 ppl were from SHC. Lina, Chin Boon, Steven Chan, Vivian Lai. Vivian brought her mom, who is 70 something. But I think her mom looked 60 something and healthy.

  14. Hi Vivian,

It’s so nice of you to bring your mom. And I saw you explaining the exercises to her in Chinese.

Look forward to see both of you regularly.

  15. Hi Steven,

I didn’t see your comment till today! “Luckily”, I ran into all of you at the lobby.

It’s good that you could make time to check out the laugh exercise. If you have enjoyed it, spread the word around, bring more friends.

  16. Hi Lina and Chin Boon,

It was good to see you two, yesterday. As you have probably noticed, the crowd yesterday was about 30 ppl. I was surprise at the hig crowd, as it was “still CNY”, and it looked as if it was going to rain!

Some “regulars” at this laugh exercise, shared with me that, after starting this laugh exercise, they feel less stress and sleep better. Ah Nee was right in her comment.

  17. Hi Ah Nee!

I have not met you before. But I get the impression that you are a humorous person, able to laugh easily and happily. That is a blessing.

Your comments “Laughter boosts the immune systems and reduce pain” was medically reseached and proven. Are you in the medical field?

Should you decide to come next Tuesday (or any Tuesdays), bring your father. He’ll probably enjoy the outing.

  18. Jacqueline, i have no doubt laughter is the best medicine to counteract the non ending barrage of depressive news in the media. Your timing in promoting this activity is almost perfect. We all need large doses of laughter. Laughter is most effective when done in a group, as the laughter feeds on each other.

  19. Ah Nee if you bring your father, you would have to do the translating. It was quite fun except for the fact that you must really relax and make an effort to laugh. There are no jokes here. I find it difficult to laugh amidst strangers and even more so if you are very reserve. We actually laugh cos we see others laughing – infectious laughing. Guess like everything else it gets easier with practice. I see Steven can laugh very heartily.

Thanks Jacqueline for introducing us to the exercise. In fact, Ah Nee laughs even before I finish my joke! Haha!

  20. Hi Jacqueline,

I don’t normaly write in the forum, but after meeting a true lady like you, I’m drawn to this forum once again. A laughter exercise isn’t quite a laughing matter without you as a facilitator I must say. You forgot to mention this is quite an “international” event as I see ang-moh, a Japanese and a couple of Indians there too, not to mention the guy whose name sounds like Khaw Boon Wan and actually resembles him. Boy, he could really laugh his head off.

Btw, I did sleep better last night but it was due to the soothing musical show afterwards at the Waterfront. If I don’t see you again on Tuesdays, I hope to catch up with you in some other events.

On behalf of Lina and Steven, thanks again. Oops, before I forget, Hahahahahahahaha(to echo Steven)!

  21. Hi Jacqueline Han /others,

Thanks for sharing this Laughter post with us.
Mind you , I was able to sleep and had better dreams after some of the energy channel goes to laughter.

Every night, in my brain , the 7 “horses” are running in different directions. I got to “train”/meditate/focus my WILD thoughts so that all my 7 horses obediently follow my mind in 1 direction.

If one is able to do that, then our mind will be CALM and PEACEFUL. It is like a clear mirror which reflects everything perfectly.( liken to a placid lake ).

I like to repeat from Ah Nee the benefits of laughter
“Laughter is the best medicine”. This is indeed very true! Laughter boosts the immune system, and lessens pain. Laughing also reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and has a beneficial effect on our overall well being.

I was happy to meet Vivian Lai and mum,Chin Boon , Lina and you.

When we were all laughing so LOUD in a circle , passer bys tot we were mentally ill patients that has been discharged from I.M.H.,Seow Langs and Seow cha Bors with nothing better to do lah ! Ha! ha! ha1 Ha! Ha! ha! ha1 Ha! Ha! ha! ha1 Ha!

Miss Zaibun told us a CNY story and at every stage we stop to laugh.Ha! ha! ha1 Ha!Ha! ha! ha1 Ha!

The “artificial” laughter soon makes us “laugh naturally at her jokes.

Just for sharing,my own CNY version

    For eg. Item 1 :-
You wore your trousers the other way round and greet your family members CNY without realising your mistake and they burst out Ha! ha! ha1 Ha! Ha! ha! ha1 Ha!

    For item 2 :-
Your parents was v. generous this time and gave you $1000 ang pow money and all of you laugh out heartily
Ha! ha! ha1 Ha! Ha! ha! ha1 Ha! Ha! ha! ha1 Ha!

I would like to encourage more of you SHCians to join us for a GOOD laugh to destress from the gloomy news:- global economy, retrenchment, financial crisis etc…

Hope that Jacqueline can update her Laughter post regularly for the sake of most SHCians still busily at work.

Ha! ha! ha1 Ha! Ha! ha! ha1 Ha! Ha! ha! ha1 Ha!
    Practice makes Perfect!

  22. Hi Charles Wee!

It’s good to hear from you. I’ve met you during the walk at McRitchie TreeTop walk, last year. How are you?

You are right, “Laughter is most effective when done in a group, as the laughter feeds on each other.”

And at a time when the front page (as well as back page)of daily newspaper is filled with bad economic news, we do need to “de-stress” in whatever way we can.

Make time to check this out, any Tuesdays, that you feel so inclined. C U soon!

  23. Hi Lina-

Your observations are accurate – “you must really relax and make an effort to laugh. I find it difficult to laugh amidst strangers and even more so if you are very reserve. We actually laugh cos we see others laughing – infectious laughing. Guess like everything else it gets easier with practice. I see Steven can laugh very heartily.”

From my personal experience – during my first 3 to 4 “lessons”, I hardly laughed at all. You are right again -“It gets easier with practice”. Look forward to c u on Tuesdays!

  24. Hi Chin Boon!

Thank you for your compliments. I have copied and pasted your comments here –

“You forgot to mention this is quite an “international” event as I see ang-moh, a Japanese and a couple of Indians there too, not to mention the guy whose name sounds like Khaw Boon Wan and actually resembles him. Boy, he could really laugh his head off.”

Your observations are sharp. I did not quite notice that the group was so “international”. hahahahahahaah.

It’s good to self-introduce yourself to others, with a smile or a nod. Good to know that you have “made friends” with Khaw Boon Wan. He sure “laughed his head off”.

I look forward to c u again, if not on Tuesdays, then, at other SHC gatherings. Keep on laughing!

  25. HI STEVEN CHAN!

Thank you for your in-depth comments. Thank you for your input in this “laughter exercise” post.

You have “cheem” reflections: “then our mind will be CALM and PEACEFUL…like a clear mirror which reflects everything perfectly.(liken to a placid lake)”.

You have humor: I like your revised “version of CNY”. hahahahahahhah. “$1000 ang pow”, and “trousers worn the other way round”. hahahahahah.

    You are funny.

But I must add that, humor is subjective. What is funny to one, is NOT funny to another. So, at all times, when making “funny jokes”, one must be considerate of other’s sensivity.

AND A BIG BIG BIG THANK YOU FOR Your comment – “I would like to encourage more of you SHCians to join us for a GOOD laugh to destress from the gloomy news:- global economy, retrenchment, financial crisis etc…”

Well said, Steven! I look forward to c u (with other SHCians) on Tuesdays!

  26. Thanks, Jacqueline

It is a very good form of excercise, I strongly recommend to each and everyone, u hv to go and feel and see it yourself at least once, my Mom and I really enjoyed this new kind of exercise. It is a bit far for me to travel there, I wish we could hv one in the East too. Jac, u people in the West r really lucky, Thanks again.

  27. Hi KC Lau!

Noted your mobile number. Will sms mine to you. Is it your first time to the HORT Park? If you need me to bring you to the “circle of bamboo”, please be at the lobby by 6.15pm.

    C U soon!

  28. “If you need me to bring you to the “circle of bamboo”, please be at the lobby by…..”

I think I know enough of KC that he’d rather you bring him a bamboo and leave him alone. He will close his eyes and grope in circles in the lobby with the bamboo. And then, you all will really have a valid reason to do your laughter exercise.

  29. Hi Everyone!

Here’s a gentle reminder to make your way to the Hort Park for the Laughter Exercise. It is free and easy. Literally. It’s on Tuesday, 6.30pm at the “Circle of Bamboo”. If it’s your first time to the Hort Park, plan to arrive around 6pm. Take a stroll, enjoy the park.

If coming by car, and via ECP, exit Telok Blangah Rd, then hit Alexandra Rd. Hyderabad Rd is just before the Depot Rd junction. If coming via the AYE, exit Alexandra Rd, turn right, make a U-turn after the junction of Depot Rd, and turn left into Hyderabad Rd.

If coming by bus, take any of these buses to Alexandra Rd: 51, 57, 93, 97, 100, 166, 175. Depending on which direction you are coming from, alight at the bus-stop before or after the junction of Depot Rd. There is a prominent sign that reads Hort Park, and also a Tree-top overhead bridge. You can’t miss it.

If coming this Tuesday, and you need me to show you the way to the “Circle of Bamboo”, I’ll meet you at 6.15pm, at the lobby.

If you can find your way to the “Circle of bamboo”, C U there!

  30. Update on the Laughter Exercise at Hort Park:

    Hi Folks!

Last Tuesday, Bira and Evelyn turned up at the Laughter Exercise, “incognito”. Hahahahah… I mean, they didn’t identify themselves as SHC members. They enjoyed the laughter exercise and turned up again today!

Today, the number of participants exceeded 35. It was rather crowded in the Circle of Bamboo. Fortunately, the evening was cool and breezy.

As we raised our arms into the air, and looked upwards to the clear blue sky, we let out a resounding “HAH-HAH, HOH-HOH-HOH”. And then, the laughter began…

I was happy to see fellow SHC members Bira, Evelyn, K C Lau, Veronique, Margaret and Laurence. All of them enjoyed themselves.

I look forward to seeing them regularly at the laughter exercise.

I also look forward to seeing many more SHC members join this free and easy exercise.

  31. Thanks Jacq for introducing this exercise to us.
I enjoyed very much… ha ha ha……. come and join us SHCians…
Nor & buddies, what are you waiting ??? you and your gang will certainly go from ‘siau’ to very siau lah ha ha haha…..

  32. Hi Jac,

I’ve heard about this laugher exercise but didn’t know how to get involved. Thanks for bringing us into the laughter club and sharing with us the benefits of laughing. Laughter is contagious because when others laugh you will also laugh but you don’t know why you laugh so you continue laughing n laughing hahahahahahahahahaha… …………….

Besides feeling relaxed, the 30 mins laughter exercise had somehow strengthened my abdomen muscle because after that I went course assessment and surprisingly I could do the rib cage slide better than usual.

Jac, next week will be your turn to get a standing ovation. Haahaahaa Hoohoohoo Heeheehee Hayhayhay……………………

    Be Happy!
    Veronique

  33. Hi Bira!

Thank you for your feedback. Your positive comments on this laughter exercise will certainly convince some SHC folks to try this exercise. Some folks are curious, but still too shy to check this out.

I look forward to see you and Evelyn this Tuesday! Cheers!

  34. Hi Veronique!

I’ve met you before at the MacRitchie Tree Top Walk. It was good to see you again.

Thank you for your positive comments on this laughter exercise. Yes – other laughter participants have shared with me that – after the exercise, they somehow feel more relax, feel better about themselves, and sleep better at night!

Your comment: “Besides feeling relaxed, the 30 mins laughter exercise had somehow strengthened my abdomen muscle because after that I went course assessment and surprisingly I could do the rib cage slide better than usual.”

Your muscles are more relaxed? Such, that you can do your “rib-cage slide” ? hahahahah… wow…. this puts a whole new meaning to the word, “rib-cage”! I had no idea “rib-cage” can “slide”! You had mentioned that you were learning “belly-dancing”. I have also heard that “belly-dancing” is a great exercise for “toning the body muscles”. And I am interesting to hear more about it. Perhaps, you could start a thread on “belly-dancing” to share your experience on “belly-dancing”. What do you think?

I look forward to see you more regularly at this laughter exercise! Till then, keep on laughing!

  36. UPDDATE ON LAUGHTER EXERCISE:

Yesterday, the number of participants was about 40. It was really crowded within the Circle of Bamboo.

I was happy to note that several SHC members were present: Joyce Tan, Veronique, and Ronald Wie.

I am going to Yunnan China with some SHC folks 26 Feb to 8 March. As such, I will not be checking in on this post, and will not be at the Laughter Exercise next Tuesday 3rd March. BUT – PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DROP IN TO THIS LAUGHTER EXERCISE – ON YOUR OWN. The facilitator, Ms Zaibun, welcomes everyone. Don’t be shy shy.

Till I see you again. Keep on laughing. HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH…

  37. HI JOYCE AND RONALD!

I was happy to see you both! Please share with us, your impression and experience of your first laughter exercise.

As I will be in China with some SHC folks from 26 Feb to 8 March, I will not be there next Tuesday 3rd March. Please feel free to drop into the laughter exercise – With more SHC folks! Ms Zaibun welcomes everyone. Don’t be shy. If it comes naturally, do introduce yourself to others. If you are shy, you don’t to. Simply smile and nod to the people around you.

Laugh – and the world laughs with you!

If you are shy, you don’t have to. Simply smile and nod to the people around you.

Laugh – and the world laughs with you!

  39. Hi Jac,

It’s really nice of you for sharing this exercise with all of us. Like all exercises, it helps improve our general wellbeing.

‘Laugh – and the world laughs with you!’ Yes, it’s contagious, and my tense muscles (a result from last week-end’s tough training for my upcoming moutain climbing trip + office’s works) relaxed instantly after the 1/2hrs session. Thank you so much!

Ever so often, we can’t laugh bcos… the aged are suffering from sickness and are helpless; the children from 3rd world are living in such poverty and life is hard; things don’t go the way it shld be and etc…

But laugh when you can. I enjoyed this exercise very much, so good to be able to laugh out loud without bothering about what others feel. Laugh, and we’ll need lesser medication…. oops… hahahahahahahaha

  40. Hi Jac,

Thanks for being the host to SHC else I would not have thought of going to such a gathering. I was as you could tell a little uncomfortable being engineering biased all my life I do find it hard to laugh without a reason let alone do anything.

I am however open as I am also looking into taking up theurapatic Qi Qong as well, so exploring all other exercises that promotes well being for the body, mind and soul, and mental heath too.

Hi Robert and Kristy , I think you should come down and try this out and find if it can tickle your funny bones somewhere and release more healthy energy that may have been blocked or undiscovered.

    Cheers

  41. Hi Joyce!

Your “tensed muscles relaxed instantly after the half hour session”?! Wow…. That is good for you!

You must be looking forward to your “upcoming mountain climbing trip. Do share with us, which mountain are you climbing? That is so adventurous! I admire your youthful energy and spirit!

I have not finished packing for my Yunnan trip tomorrow. I’ll catch up with you upon my return on the 8th March!
I’d like to hear your views on “life is hard; things don’t go the way it shld be…”

Life for me, was hard…. I never knew how to laugh… till now… and I’m still learning how to…

I liked what you have written: “But laugh when you can. I enjoyed this exercise very much, so good to be able to laugh out loud without bothering about what others feel. Laugh, and we’ll need lesser medication….”

    Take care. Keep on laughing!
