Can you give moral support to SHCians who are trying to reach their ideal weight?

Some of you may remember the post on "What is your secret to looking good and feeling good?".  If you have joined the activities organised by fellow SHCians, you will probably understand that looking good and feeling good is very important, especially when we enter our SilverHairs years.  Feeliing good and looking good depends on a number of factors.

But, one factor which I like to start with is looking good.  Let start with height and weight.  There is such a thing as ideal weight.  Last one month, I realised that I increased my weight to 69 kg when my ideal weight for a height 164 mm should be 65 kg.  Likely due to too much eating.  And, there are many reasons why we cannot reach our ideal weight.

So, let’s help one another.  Go ahead and tell us and everybody what is your height in mm, your ideal weight (in kg) and your current weight (in kg).  On 16 Jan 2010, tell us again your height, your ideal weight and your new weight.   When another SHCian reads your wish, he/she can offer you a prize for meeting your ideal weight.  We all need incentive to control weight, altho we know it’s good for health.

So, let’s hear from you.  Don’t be shy.  Let’s the SHC community help you to reduce your weight, so that you can look good and feel good.

  1. My height is 164mm, ideal weight is 65 kg and current weight is 69 kg. I have always been around 65 kgs, but I guess I have been eating too much in the last 3 months. I need your moral support.

Don’t think it’s quite the right time to initiate this what with the year end festivites round the corner and the opening of the cafe.

Now you’ll have to gain more weight before you lose some i.e. back to square one + some. Ha aha aha….

….. and the cafe, if SHC members have to watch weight, they’ll come, see, maybe drink but no eat. Will not do right?

  3. Terence

Is it a typo error that your height is only 164mm ie less than a foot high??? It should be 164cm ie about 5 ft 3 ins.
I am also same height as u but weight is 64kg. Ideal wt shd be 58kg for medium frame according to chart.

  4. My height is 1.73m (5′ 8″), ideal weight is 70kg. This weight was my constant companion until mid 2008 when I did my last 42km marathon, I took a gd rest. It ws also the longest n lasting one. Weight gone up to 77kg within the next 6 mths due to lack of exercises n munching too much snacks n having heavy supper prior to bed time.

During my switch to cycling in the beginning of this year, I cycle intensively between Mar n Jun, doing ard 200km per wk, the weight reduced to 68kg. Well a 9kg loss, the stress ws apparent on the face n arms. Now I m back to 70kg after some fine tuning. It also mean I m now getting lazy.

  5. Aiyah All,
A simple guide on Height vs Weight of an Asian Person is the Body Mass Index which you can read at:
    http://www.hpb.gov.sg/foodforhealth/article.aspx?id=6584
In brief, BMI (kg/m²) for Adults Health Risk:
    1. 27.5 and above = High Risk
    2. 23.0 -27.4 = Moderate Risk
    3. 18.5 – 22.9 = Low Risk (Healthy Range)
    4. Less than 18.5 = Risk of nutritional deficiency diseases and osteoporosis
    For myself, currently = 73kgs divided by (1.72m x 1.72m) = 24.68
But for the near future; with all the Mcdonalds and the Festivals coming up ……….. most probably will be 27.6!!!

  6. Hi Terence,

My height is 1.59m, ideal weight is 55-61kg. Now I am 66kg so I need to lose 5-10kg…that’s a lot! I am now back to my regular swimming, walking and gardening, drinking lots of water, no snacks after dinner – maybe can shed a few kg before 2010.

  7. Hi Terence

My height is around 1.59m, sometimes measured as 1.60m, depending on the ‘measurer’, haha.

My weight is between 58 to 59kg, depending on whether I have water retention from eating too much salty stuff.

According to my doc, my ideal weight should be about 57kg, but according to my bone density chart, in order to have good bone density, I have to be around 59kg at my age!

It seems, the older a woman gets, the heavier her weight should be, to maintain good bone density, of course within a certain ‘healthy’ range of heaviness.

    It’s tough maintaining 57 kg.
At the beginning of this year, I managed to attain 57.5kg, but I’ve been making almost weekly trips to JB for ‘makan’ sessions and my weight is now 58.9kg. :-(
On top of that, there is almost a fortnightly, sometimes weekly, birthday to celebrate among my group of regulars
and there is always a cake. How not to put on weight?

Now, with the festive season round the corner, it will be very difficult to reduce my weight.

And oh yes, with my dessert potluck on Saturday, my weight is going to zoom up! Hahaha.

Think I will start dieting from now till Saturday to prepare for it, ;-)

  8. Terence and all who want to lose some weight,

I find that drinking a glass of water frequently to stave off hunger in between meals, helps. If that’s not enough, then snack on a fruit or some carrot sticks or even some dates.

Drinking water during a meal also helps to fill up the stomach and I get full very quickly.

Don’t go hungry as it will cause the body to compensate by absorbing much more at the next meal.

Then, there’s nothing better than walking. Jogging is not really advisable at our age if we have not been doing it regularly before. Brisk walking will do.

I know I falter and can’t resist tempting food and it takes a lot of disciplne but I’m trying……, trying…. sigh…..

  9. Ivan Lim

I went into the site you gave and calculated my BMI. Oh dear, it’s 23.5, moderate risk.

Got to cut down to 57.5kg to get into the upper end of the low risk category. So unbelievably hard to cut down 1.5kg!
    But I must.

  10. Hi Ivan,

Thanks for pointing out that my height is wrong. At 164 mm, I must be a migget.

Wow, we have participants from MaryC, Mary Lee (from Perth), Yew Kwong and HenryL. Dont be shy, sharing your weight data is different from sharing your age data.

Now everybody, must be honest, ok? I shall bring a digital weighing machine. Take this as a moral booster to help you loose the weight you want, and stay healthy. Sorry ah, I dont want to worry how you achieve your ideal weight.

Now, calling Norlinda, Sam Huat Huat, Dan Huang, CatherineY, DaisyY, Oi Cheng, Abel, all the Christinas, CarolineG, LisaO, Hamidah and many many more. Repeat, dont be shy or feel offended. We do it collectively to try to achieve our idea weight.

  11. Perhaps this should be the manner on how u can arrive at accurate weight n height.

Measuring height : Make sure u are leaning straight wif back against the wall. Remove all footwear n sock.

Taking weight : Do it in the early morning when u get up minus drink n food n dress lightly. Ask someone else to look at the reading but not yourself looking downward.

  12. My data:
    Height – 167cm
    Weight – 64.0kg
    BMI – 22.9
    Target wt – 63.0kg

Yipee, I don’t have much to lose. Maybe my ‘mid-drift’ or
belly. Very unsightly although I’m not a drinker.

However, I believe to remain healthy; height, weight and BMI
is just 1 indicator. Other more important considerations
are blood glucose, BP, triglycerides and cholesterol
    measurements.

Hope we have another thread to compare how ‘healthy’ we are.

  14. My BMI is 20.6 and my height is 1.75m and weight is only 63 kgs. Maybe I am under weight as my bones are quite light and have the problem of back aching on and off.

I notice I am shorter by 2cm recently after the polyclinic did a weight and height measurement for me. I was 1.77m in 1977 when I was still in NS.

I never have weight problem as I am motivated to exercise or do things to make myself healthy – I am inflicted since childhood with constipation. I need to stay active to overcome it.

Here is my daily schedule which helps me to stay healthy and overcome my constipation:

    (1) Wake up at 0600 hours and does warming-up exercises for about 30 minutes. Drink about 0.8 liter of plain water.
    (2) Slow jog for the next 30 minutes before doing a cooling down exercises for another 20 to 30 minutes. Drink another bottle of about 1.6 liter of water.

With my daily schedule there is no possibility for me to be overweight despite I have never restraint myself on food consumption.

  15. I am 165cm tall and weight 71kg. According to medical statistics I am classified as overweight and have 100% more chance of having a heart attack when compared with people of normal weight. I go to the gym twice a week and walk for 1-2hours twice a week. I also play one round of golf each week under this tropical sun. But I will weight 72 kg by next month.
I know my problem is over-eating, but I don’t know how to stop.
If there are anyone one of you who have managed to reduce his/her weight and maintain it for a period of more than 1 year, please share, you can save life here

  16. Hi Tian Soon,

Follow my daily schedule for at least 3 months and I am sure you will have a healthy weight of about 65 kgs. Maintain the daily schedule faithfully and I am sure you will not overweight despite your over-eating.

  17. Hi Tian Soo

It’s quite easy to achieve. Between 2005 to mid 2008, my weight ws kept at 70kg since I took up running seriously. I only reward (or maybe others call it “pamper”) wif food like ice kachang, ice cream, etc after every running session. Other times, I m off these food. I eat any food I want w/o restriction but wif moderation, the oily ones. Even wif heavy drinking in between, the weight firmly stays at 70kg.

I strong believe in mind over the body. Wif regular exercises in place u shouldnt be worrying over weight issue. Gd to have your own set.

  18. Hmm, I have some ideas on the prizes for the “Look good, Feel good – Ideal weight competition”.

First prize – a soft toy teddy bear
Second prize – a soft toy elephant
Third prize – a soft toy panda.

As long as you lose 2 kg off your current weight, you stand a chance to win one of the above prizes. Date of measurement for this competition 16 Jan 2010. Open to both sexes, must be over 45. Your chance to look good and feel good.

    Have fun.

    Terence Seah

  19. Thanks Steven Ng and Yew Kwong

Unfortunately I had a heart attack 3 years ago while jogging. Since than doctors have ask me to stop jogging and my weight have increase steadily by 1 kg a year ever since.

Jog I die. Don’t jog also die. How?

Have anyone been to any overseas health spa to reduce weight? I think, locking myself in a place away from Dry Mee Pok may help?

Terence – I want your teddy bear.

  20. Hi Terence,
Althought you didn’t call for me, I am volunteering my statistics…..heehee

My weight averages between 52 and 54kg.
    My height is 1.58m.

    @ 52kg, my BMI is 20.8
    @ 54kg, my BMI is 21.9

@ either weight, I am well within the ‘safe’ zone, but I feel best when I am @ 52kg.

    The French motto :
    – Eat like a King at Breakfast.
    – Eat like a Prince at Lunch; and
    – Eat like a Pauper at Dinner.

I try to adhere to this motto but am too far off from the French culture to succeed.

Our Singaporean motto is to : Feast like an Emperor at all Mealtime – which is all the time, anytime, suka-suka time…..

  21. Hi All, I believe a healthy mind will create a healthy body.
Whatever we do and eat, do it with moderation. We are our own master.

At an age of refinement and experience and ‘system failure’ anytime, food intact in moderation and choice will bring a healthy outlook of life. That is why I withdraw from the Tung Lok Dinner after cycling this Saturday.

we always say to ourselves, never mind once a while is OK. And there are so many once in a while.

We are what we will be. We cannot be more or we cannot be less.

Exercise and stay healthy. I visit the Gym 3 times a week. Join as member of SSC with Lina Ng’s influence. Thanks Lina.

  22. Hi Lily #21,

I think you are far too slim; but since you like to go down by 1 kg, I shall put your name down for the competition.

And,for everybody, here is one reason why you should go down 2 – 3 kg, if you are outside your ideal target. During the coming cabaret and night club event, we are going to have one dance type ie hands around the waist and hands over and around the neck. So, dont wait ….

  23. helo Terence@10

Alamak i heard you loud & clear!..but im not telling you my weight hor..very paiseh!.haha

But i can tell you..I have to lose at least 5kg!thats a nightmare!..want to lose 2kg also susah!
    Luckily im on moderate risk..hhmm..sigh..

Well..actually we all know what’s good & bad for our body..be it about food, exercise, sleep etc..
but for me…my worst weakness is,im not discipline!
    Im always happy-go-lucky..no worries…dont think so much..relax..do whatever & eat whatever!…horror!
especially on snacking..even though i know its BAD!
So…how to be slim?…& always console myself by imagining that i have a heavy bone mass!….not fats!..
    so apa macam?…haha

  24. Before……(height 1.6 m / weight 61 kg)

I was chubby chubby happy go lucky of almost 61 kg from 2001 to 2004. In 2005, my weight reduced tremendously to 57 kg after an ordeal of pneumonia for a week in hospital. I gradually improved my appetite and start my eating spree…Ooops! my weight increased to 59 kg from 2006 to 2007. Then I had my bad year last year, coughing very often and my weight back to 57 kg.

    Now……(height 1.6 m / weight 56.8 kg)

I had my office health screening last week and my BMI reading is 22.2. Should be ok lah, but I am trying very hard to achieve my ideal weight of 55 kg. With the MacDonald Monopoly game playing around, wonder if it’s possible? :(

    Ah Nee

  25. Terence #10,
Just to correct you, it’s HENRY LIM who had pointed out your measurement error ….. me cannot see these mm bcos me already “old-Flower-Eyes” …. :)
    Dear All,
BMI is only an indicator of PHYSICAL “features” so take it with a pinch of salt. Whether you over or under or Pian-Choong …. it just a number. Do continue to eat and enjoy whatever you are eating or want to eat …… we only lived once! Like TS says eat(aka jog) also die, dun eat (aka jog) also die. So better eat (aka jog) and die …. but preferrably not at same time …. ;)

  26. Karen@19..
Hey…give some face value to Ah Huat la..so kesian
Batam time was fun party time..so as Lily said, suka2, makan2 and minum2(drinking)..hee

Can somebody justify..does having good BMI means that u are healthy? No rite?..hehe, sourgrapes me lor..:)

But i agree, having ideal weight is important for our age group(ooppss!)..not only for health but for looks too..at least for the girls..than whatever fashion clothes we wear will be just perfect!

  27. Like Nor, I also paiseh lah. Both of us bulat bulat but not fat hor.

I know I should lose weight and would definitely like to. BMI is in the moderate risk but bone mass is also heavy.

I don’t know if what I’ve initiated will help me but do know I will have to exercise more to lost weight faster. Need to be more committed here.

Now, what’s serving at the cafe?

  28. Nor

Ah Huat angry already la …he no reply on my comment…Die la , must apology to him in PRIVATE ..

Be like Nor , happy go lucky , eat what she want and she never worry her weight (haha)

    Karen

  29. Re#22, Just to clarify, LeePat went to the gym on StevenC’s invitation and that was many months ago. So a note of thanks should rightfully go to StevenC not me. Since then, each of us are going to different gyms.

  30. Hi Tian Soo #15

“please share, you can save life here”

I see can you exercise quite alot, going to the gym, play golf, walking etc.. but your only problem is over-eating.

I got some very good advise from a friend few years back, and it works for me, would like to share here.

Eat what ever you want to eat but stop at the second helping, every meal do not eat 100% full, only 70%, if you can, 50% even better, of-course you will feel hungry very soon, eat fruits or chew raw almonds to last until the next meal, again 70% full, if you can maintain like this for 2 months, you will feel lighter and want to eat less but of-course exercise is still a must.

Swimimng is the best exercise for losing weight, and if you can continue this eating pattern for 6 months I asure you will see results.

Do not eat before going to bed, best is stop eating after 9pm.

I remember seeing an article written by LKY “we should only eat 80% full” and exercise every day.

How about joining “PCK” cycling group…

    cheers….

  31. Hi Terence

I am 1.6m and weigh between 59 and 61kg – Depending on the time of the year. However, as soon as its difficult to pull my skinny jeans up, and can barely button up, I know its time to go for extra brisk walks and take my broth with lots of veggies for meals.

I dont watch my weight cos if you do a lot of weight training and you tone up, you have more muscles and muscles weigh heavier than fats.

Good thing is I dont eat what I bake otherwise my weight would have been unimaginable.

I have a big frame so I cannot be too light. There was once when I hit 52 kg, I was a bag of bones. However, Norly and I have even distribution of flesh like we fill up our “Cups” nicely and our butt fill up our tight pair of jeans. Maybe a little “sum chan bak” here and there. So sometimes, its not just the weight but the measurements too.

I do my exercise regularly and rarely eat fried foods cos my family has the fat genes so I have to be extra careful.

Many years ago, I tried out one of those slimming centres and paid almost $3,000 but did not lose weight cos they wrap you up like a mummy and stay that way for one hour each time so when you need to take a leak, it was torturous.

I decided to do it my way, the hard way. I do brisk walking every morning and evening for one hour each. Had two slices of wholemeal/multigrain bread without any spread and a cup of kopi kosong for breakfast. Lunch and dinner were just soup boiled with skinned chicken breast, cabbage, tomatoes, onions and carrots and two tablespoon of rice. In between meals, I snack on an apple or an orange and a handful of dry roasted almonds. I lost 10kg in one and a half months.

I hope I can lose 3 to 4 kg before the Cabaret Night. But with Christmas round the corner, it will be tough but will try my best. I love my ham bone-in (which is available only once a year from my favourite shop), my log cake, rich fruit cake, aiya so difficult to resist lah.

    Cheers
    Caroline

  32. Norly,

Weight is important but above all, stay healthly should be our main concern. So many years with you and there are years that you never took MC (sick leave) at all. Really envy you…..so strong & healthy, what’s your secret huh? Don’t tell me to eat your favourite “keropok” hor…hehehe…..

    Ah Nee

  33. Ah Nee

You are right. Its important to stay healty and happy.

Norly, she is always so happy. Eat what she wants, do what she wants to do and always smiling. I have never seen her lose her cool. No matter how unhappy she is with someone, she will say why like that huh? but she says it so gently with no anger in her tone and eyes.

Maybe thats her secret to staying healthy.

    Cheers
    Carly

  34. Lily

I really envy you. I see the way you enjoy your food and the amount you eat and still remain so slim. My gosh! If it was me, I would not be able to pass through my apt door, frontway or sideway!

    Caroline

  35. Hi Terence,

I am 1.57 and 48kg, guess I dont need to cut my weight, but what really bother me is to tone up, it is getting more difficult to tone up for women at our age, haha. So gals/guys dont just cut your weight but also must look into toning your body, that will definitely make you look and feel good overall. Btw, I realise strong muscle will help a person to dance better.

I watch my diet carefully and exercise 3/4 times a week but yet to reach my target. Must work harder, hehe hee.

  36. Hi Tian Soo @# 15,

I can empathise with you – it’s near impossible to say no to food if you love to eat. You need to use some ‘tricks’ to overcome food temptations. You already know one – avoid your fav food stalls like the plague!

Here are some more ‘tricks’ that you can use (if u haven’t tried them):

1 – Brush your teeth after every meal so that your mouth feels clean and fresh. When you see food later, you may be able to say no bcos you don’t want to lose the ‘clean mouth’ feeling.

2 – Go to bed early/earlier so that your body gets no chance to feel hungry.

3 – Engage in an absorbing activity so that u forget to eat!

4(this is drastic!) – Don’t stock/keep any snacks at home. When you feel the urge to have a snack (or supper), take a drink of plain water and quickly go to bed!

    Good luck! :)

  37. Carly@36..
    Ya lor..blame our genes!…haha..
Your diet regime whereby you lose 10kg sounds interesting & amazing!..wow!…but must only eat so limited & ‘boring’ food..ooppss sori…mana tahan le…hehe…so u see,no discipline again.. saya cannot go on diet..hhmm..

    Eileen@34..
TS exercise bcos he wants to eat la..after all he’s only a bit round2,but still cute & handsome!..hehe

    AhNee@38..
Ya..always ‘envy’ people can take mc so easily..but im greatful that i seldom sick..cos if i am…very ‘cha lak’..mc few days & felt like dying!
Aiyo that keropok is the devil la!…haha

Nowadays i lack of exercise..got the lazy bug!..in the evening after office hour,if got time..like to read forum, rather than go gym..at home, love to watch TV, apa macam?…

Alamak…think also bcos of metabolic rate lower,so even eat little,no difference..so the bottom line is to exercise more!
calling my kampong gang..Carly & Rene..can we make a routine briskwalk at our connector park?..last time i got my nebors as company, nowadays..they also lazy..so susah la!

  38. So funny, when i was typing this morning, the number was correct le..that’s what happen when u draft morning & send afternoon!..haha

    Correction..paiseh!
    Carly@35 not 36
    Eileen@33 not 34
    AhNee@34 not 38

  39. Oopps!..ahnee@37 not 38

    Jassmine..
    I like your tricks..
Brush teeth after meals..hhmm..sound so clean :)
Go to bed early..susah la..cos now love to watch golf for hours!..perhaps i should tape my itchy mouth!
Your last, dont stock snack…v susah..cos i always peep in the fridge for my kids chocolates!…i must stay away from kitchen!

  40. Jassmine #42

    Thanks for your tricks.
    1. I tried the brushing my teeth every meal trick once, but I reason to myself that I will dirty my teeth again so why brush between meals.
    2. I go to bed about 11 pm each night because my tummy work so hard digesting the food I ate and uses up all my energy that I become sleepy anyway.
    3. This is a new and good suggestion. Mayby I find a gorgious girl to sit in front of me when I eat. If she releases a few buttons of her blouse that would be enough to stop me eating. I may still salivate but not for the food. How to try this?
    4. I don’t snack between meals, I get into my car and have another feast.

  41. halokaren mei 2 # 19 ,nor # 31

  43. I am terribly overweight and am working very hard to try to shed the excess weight. I walk, swim ,cycle and play some racket games BUT I when I get back from my workout, I always end up eating more than my usual. Haha.

    I am 1.55m tall and weigh a hefty 65.6kg
My BMI is 27.32 and I am in the high risk group.

My extra padding is perhaps a blessing.
I missed a step and slid down a flight of 8 steps two years ago and was bruised so badly that I had to go to the hospital for an x-ray. My orthopaedic doc saw me and said that I was lucky because I was well insulated – so no bone damage. For once being fat is good.

  44. Norlinda #47.

I eat vegetables everyday at home like rabbit, that is why I have to eat Rendang, Soup Kambeng or Matarbak when I go out. It is call ‘Balance Diet’.

Now Amy Soon has given me moral support. We all fat fat round round even roll down the stairs, can still be alive.

  45. Hi Terence,

How about registration for the SHC weight gain program as well in addtn to the weight loss program ?

I am sure there are some SHcians who too want to gain weight.

May I suggest that you tabulate 2 columns; 1 for losing weight and the other for gaining weight.

Ht is 1.92m Current weight is 70kg. Ideal weight : 100kg.

Well who can spare some fats and passed on to me ha! ha! :)

  46. Aiyoh Terence,

So paiseh to put my weight here after viewing everyone’s petite datas, but what the heck, here’s mine for the record as I believe I champion everyone with my results:

    Height: 5ft 4″ i.e. 1.64m
Weight: 82.7kg (Current), Ideal shd be 60kg and below
    BMI: 30+ (Very high risk)

Looks like I’ve either got to join YK for cycling besides my ‘Tai Chi’ lessons twice a week.

I just love my food too much and not about to give them up esp. with the festive seasons lining up.

#50 Stephen, I’ll be only too glad to give you that extra 20kg of fats and we can both look good ya – just tell me when?

Have a great weekend everyone! Kind regards, Lisa O

  47. Hi Lisa #51,

Wellcome to the SHC Feel good, Look good program. It will be your callenge to go down 3 kg. Let us know when you have achieved it.

    Hi Steven #50,
Your suggestion is noted; but I really prefer to stick to the current plan. Feel free to start another competition.

    Terence Seah

  49. Hi SHCians

To maintain a healthy lifestyle which makes us feel good and look good, requires quite acute personal sacrifices.
My daily regime since early 2001, listed not in chronological order of importance………….

Be asleep at the latest 12.15am
awake naturally between 6.45-7am. refusal of using a
alarm-clock means forgoing early morning events
after morning ablutions, do less than 10mins of push-ups,
    knee-bends, etc
breakfast is a must, and more than half the time bread
    with peanut-butter, half-a-glass of any vit-C juice,
coffee is non-black, less sugared with milk
consume meat between 4 to 6,7 times annually when
attending wedding dinners, clubs’ D & D, etc., cause
    daily fare is meatless
eat sparringly fried foodstuffs and sambal chillies
twice weekly have a fuller breakfast and skip lunch,
    taking fruits instead
between every 30-35days, on fasting one day, no
consumption of food after breakfast for 10,11hours,
    though drink liquids
unless heavy rain, walks every day from home in Jalan
Besar Stadium vincinity, to either Aljunied MRT/bustop
or Raffles City MRT/Suntech City bustop for public
    transport
except for fruits, abstain from eating after 9pm, usually
skip the last dish of fried mee/rice at function-dinners
stop smoking since mid-2000 and also has drastically
reduced consumption of alcohol from 2,3bottles of beer
daily to 2,3cans weekly now, with total abstention from
    hard liquor

As an aside and with due respect to all SHCians, a healthy
lifestyle in my experience, do invigorates a male’s
    sexual capabilities into his sixties.

    Regards

    Abel Tan

  50. Christina Pan #53

You are about my size and manage to reduce by 5KG in 1 month. I am impress. Do you have to make any food or lifestyle changes during this period and how many hours do you spend on exercises per week?

  51. In my younger days, I was 105 kg (230 lb). Today I am 82 kg (180 lb). Why was I so heavy in the past. It was due to unhealthy lifestyle. My weight problem started after playing my last water-polo game in the 1962 Asian Games in Indonesia. I was then 21 years old weighing about 73 kg (161 lb). So today at 82 kg I am 11kg above my best.

My weight over the years after 1962 was a roller-coasteer ride. My obesity was due to poor dieting. I drank countless bottles of soft drinks (Sinalko, Orange, Sasi, Coke, etc.). On top of that eating two servings at coffee-shops was the norm. My favourite dishes were char kweh tiao with a lot of lard and egg oyster. The day was never complete without enjoying my nightly supper. There were two major events in my life that resulted in my loss of about 14 kg (31 lb), the first over 3 week and the second over 6 months. In 1966 when I first started teaching, I was sent to attend an Outward Bound Instructors’ Course at Pulau Ubin (4th Intake). It was a ‘mistake’ by my Principal who asked me if I would like to go for a holiday camp at the end of the school year (I was then a first-year Teacher Trainee). Imagine, I was then 105 kg (230 lb). I guess it was a blessing in disguise in the end as I lost 14 kg (31 lb) over 21 days.

My 2nd significant event when I lost the same amount of weight was in 1980. It was on a Saturday night when I dated my girl friend then. After attending a concert at the then National Theatre I discovered that my car was stolen. (In case some of you may be curious, my girl friend then was not Kristy, my present wife. She was then 19 years old). So for 6 months without a car, I had to walk and travel by bus to and from school every day. That was how I lost 14 kg, again a blessing in disguise.

Today, thankfully, I manage to maintain my weight of 82 kg (180 lb) for the past 3 years – no supper, no soft drinks, no 2nd helpings of food, etc.) and moderate exercise (walks in MacRitchie Forest Reserve.)

    My Profile: Height: 1.75 m; Weight: 105 kg – 82 kg
    BMI: 34.28 – 26.78

  52. I think the ideal weight can help you to look good and feel good. To help you, I shall bring a digital weighing machine on Monday 30 Nov 2009, the date of our Nov monthly gathering at Hans cafe.

Meantime, please check your height and your ideal weight. Take this as a fun activity, and a good opportunity to help your fellow SHC friend, and a chance to win a soft teddy bear toy. So, dont be shy.

    Terence Seah

  53. Tian Soo…..you joker lah, made me laugh, “fat fat round round even roll down the stairs, can still be alive”. hahaha….so cute, cushion all round the body, double protection!

    Ah Nee

  54. Hi Tian Soo @# 45,

Looks like a big challenge finding a way to help you lose weight. Any prize for the person who successfully recommends you a way/strategy that appeals to you and that helps you to lose…1 kg? ……… :)just joking!

Looking at the tricks I recommended, only no. 3 appeals to you. If you hire a gorgeous lady to perform…it’ll cost you a small fortune…
so here I suggest a cheaper and equally effective way. See two movies at a cineplex (back to back) after lunch. When the second movie ends, it’ll be time for dinner, so you’d have cut off a meal at ‘tea time’. Right? :)

Exercise-wise, I think if you ‘cangkul’ for 1-2 hours daily, you’ll burn off a lot of calories. Have you tried this for exercise?

Don’t give up hope – surely there’s a way …just have to find it!

    Cheers.

  55. Hi Nor @# 44,

Looks like you must either lock your fridge or your kitchen door! I don’t think you’re ‘gemuk’ though – just nicely fleshy :)

  56. Hi Lisa Ong,

    BMI: 30+ (Very high risk).

I would recommend you to go for the more “energetic exercises” like swimming and brisk walking. Tai chi 2x /week is not good enough.

Tai chi movements are rather slow. You need more rigorous exercises that will burn up yr calories faster and loses weight more effectively.

  57. Jass@60..
Thanks for your kind thoughts!… ahem! :)

    Terence..
Your thread really motivate me,thank you so much!
Yesterday i started going to the gym again..felt lighter after briskwalk on the threadmill…& some sit ups!
Today is TGIF,so its relax & hangout time..with food galore!..alamak,dangerous zone!
Must bear in mind..only eat 70-80% full!
LKY’s tips..everybody knows..but hard to practise la…cos we all normally..if food sedap, will eat to our hearts content till the tummy round2!burp!….apa macam!

I must be discipline again…to aim my ideal weight,
or at least back to my last ‘not-so-gemuk’scale!:)

  58. Hi Terence,

My ideal weight should be 70.12 kg and not 82 kg.

I would also like to add that when we are mentally active, it is believed that the brain will consume energy from the food that we eat thus contributing to our weight loss.

  59. Hi Nor,

I don’t seem to be able to find your height, ideal weight and current weight anywhere on ths discussion. So, cannot register you. I am sure you will be very pleased if your weight is 52 kg. This will really enhance your Look good, Feel good factor.

So, dont be shy what is your data?

    Hi robertQ,
I thought I made a mistake but your weighing scale has an accuracy of 2 decimal points. So, I am using 70 kg.

    Terence Seah

  60. Hello nice, free and easy people,
    How about morning walk?
Anybody interested it’s FREE BUT you must be willing to wake up early in the morning.
Starting point can be anywhere you are from …..until you reach Kembangan MRT Station at 0600hrs sharp.
Walk along the canal towards Marine Parade – Beach.
You will reach Blk 1 Marine Parade which is near Ngee Ann Primary school which is also next to Katong Convent.(0630hrs)
Cross the overhead bridge towards the beach, there are people walking along the jogging track. As you face the sea turn left and walk towards the Lagoon, go round the Lagoon until you see Lagoon Hawker’s Centre (4.5km mark). Keep on walking until you see Bedok Jetty. It is so nice and cool, you can see the sunrising, people fishing at the Jetty and the sea breeze makes you feel good.(0700hrs)(7km mark)
You may decide to walk towards Changi or if you decide to walk towards City walk towards Mcdonalds at ECP you will reach there by 0730hrs,(3.5km mark)if you think you still want to walk some more walk towards town, pass Parkway Parade, saftey park and you will see the starting point marked zero. this is near Fort Road. You will feel GREAT and you can walk back to where you started. It is fun actually, the more you walk the better you feel and eventually you will be “lighter” in your weight. No need to go or take up any SLIMMING COURSES”. HAVE FUN , YOU MAY BUMB INTO ME EVERY NOW AND THEN IF YOU GO REGULARLY.
ANYONE WANTS TO START A WALKING CLUB??????

TAKE CARE AND REMEMBER EARLY TO BED EARLY TO RISE MAKES YOU HAPPY, HEALTHY AND SURVIVE (LONGER THEN YOU THINK)…..

  61. Hi Michelle..
Wow!..i wish we are nebors..then we can walk together.U must be staying around Kembangan?..im not that far away..down the hill of Opera..
I usually walk thru the connector park..then towards beach..sometimes i just walk around Siglap estate..but nowadays no kawan..thats why become lazy & gemuk!!

Anyway…i cannot start too early…hv to do my prayers at 6am..by the time i finish..its 6.30…maybe one day we can meet up at the Bedok Jetty :)

  62. Terence..
Told you ,v paiseh to reveal my weight la..
Will tell when i reach my ideal numbers..so now im working hard & trying
to be more discipline…aarrgg!..yesterday just went wedding…another nasi briyani!…apa macam?

  63. Hi all,

Just giving my views or rather observations about reducing weight or rather why some people/gender are slimmer and the other are rounder.

While in Thailand I observed the men are always slimmer and some woman(middle age) are rounder. One observation is that the men have to get up early to bathe in cold water while the wife can take a bath much later when the water is warmer.

So for those who want to reduce weight try having a cold bath early in the morning and in the night. Make sure the water is cold enough that you can feel the shiver that is when the fat will be burn to keep you warm. On this same note, is it true to guess that most of you who are rounder are not taking cold showers? I am reasonably slim and do practice cold baths whenever I can so I believe this habit works for me to burn away unnecessary fats.

Observation 2 – get your heart broken over (love affair kind only can be over your idol, etc but not over money matters, etc). You will definitely lose weight. This will lead to periods of lost of appetite, etc. The only problem is to know when to stop else you will lose more than just your weight. This advise is given with unconditional exemption from any liability of any kind. If you accept this condition you are free to solicit for further advice, clarifications or discussion.

    Cheers

  64. Hi Terence,

While most here hope to reach their IDEAL weight by losing some, guess StevenChan’s and my IDEAL weight is the other way round ;-)

Standing at 1.62m tall and tipping the scale at 45kg, I have often been told that I am “grossly” underweight. Doctors say I have a high metabolism.

Ideally, I would like to increase my weight by 4~5 kg. I eat well, sleep well, but must admit am rather “picky” in my food.

I don’t worry too much about my weight because it has been quite constant since my younger days. Apart an asthmatic history, which is under control, generally I am healthy. To me, that’s very important.

  65. Hi Terence,

While I was underweight in my younger days, this time round I am trying to lose a few kgs to reach the ideal weight. Haha. Good to know we are not alone in this.

Height 1.57.5m Ideal weight: 53 kg Now 57kg

Yes, I agree with Gingko, who like my sister is trying to gain weight, that health is important.

Also, more importantly, it is viseral fats (around vital organs) that we need to lose.

    Cheerios!
    vivien Ler

  66. Hi Terence,
Please amend my data in your list. My ideal weight should be between 44.4 to 55kg based on HPB Standard.
I weigh 65.5kg now and that makes me 10.5kg over the ideal weight.

  67. Hi Gingko, Veronique,Lee king Seng,/others @ 70,

Ya lah. Seems like we are only the 4 ODD ones out.

    BMI = Weight (kg)
    ————————
    Height(m) x Height (m)

For eg, my weight is 68 kg and my ht is 1.92m ,

    BMI = 68 = 18.4
    ————
    1.92 x l.92

    For eg. Gingko’s BMI ,

    BMI 45 = 17.1
    ————
    1.62 x l.62

    BMI’s Indicators.
    27.5 and above = High Risk 23.0 -27.4 = Moderate Risk

    18.5 – 22.9 = Low Risk ( Healthy Range )

Since both our BMIs are NOT reflected on the range of scale,
therefore not even low risk but NO risk. Can even afford to have more rounds of Pot Lucky Parties. Ha! ha! :)

  68. Wow Ronald #69,
Vvveri dangerously leh! your observations … cold water … early morning … age = above 45, implies high potential for Flu, Room-me-ti-ism, Fever etc…

  69. Hi Steven,

Yes, we mentioned about how to gain weight at the Coffee Club yesterday together with Geraldine and a few SHC friends who were there celebrating birthday for Susan Tan.

Susan Tan, Happy Birthday To You!. Thanks James Tan for giving us a treat yesterday.

Hmm…….. I shall now disclose the details of my physique: Height = 1.62m Weight= 50kg (comprising bones and mainly muscles with very low fat) My ideal weight is 53-54kg. I’m still actively involved in weekly hashing, belly dancing and exercise with dumbbells. So, I think is not easy to achieve my ideal weight lah but I will keep trying……………………

    Be happy always!

  70. Hi Veronique,

What is weekly hashing or is it bashing? Ha! ha!

To add 3-4 kg to your tall and slender frame so as to achieve yr ideal weight , try drinking 3 cups of full cream Master’s milk every day.

I tried but can’t as I am lactose intolerant and if I drink more than 1 cup of milk I will suffer from diarrheoa.

  71. Hi Steven,

Hashing is group of people running on 7-8km trail (marked with papers and flour) in the forest and bashing thru obstacles.

I’m also lactose intolerant but drink cultured milk very day.

  72. Hi Steven Chan,

As per your message 73, if your BMI is below 18.5 there is a risk of nutritional deficiency diseases + osteoporosis and NOT no risk.

Although my BMI is 20.6, my family doctor recommend me to take Calcium Carbonate 450mg. I have been taking it for the last 6 years.

  73. Hi Patrick Lee Song Juan / Lina Ng, *****

I MISSED Leepat’s comment 22 on Nov 18 as I was in KL and do not have access to computer so easily.

Comment @22 from Patrick Lee SJ… , I visit the Gym 3 times a week. Join as member of SSC with Lina Ng’s influence. Thanks Lina.

Comment @32 from Lina Ng ,
Re#22, Just to clarify, LeePat went to the gym on StevenC’s invitation and that was many months ago. So a note of thanks should rightfully go to StevenC not me. Since then, each of us are going to different gyms.

I am writing here NOT to make a mountain out of a molehill or to gain any kind of recognition.

Some members have been talking about this comment in my presence. I felt very uneasy. And so I had to quash any more rumours arising from both comments once and for all.

I need to set this record straight and VERIFY the facts.

Steven Chan was the one to introduce Leepat to join Lina’s gym for a very short period. And he chose to come along for a few times. I did NOT coerce him to come to join me,Lina Ng and the rest but he voluntarily turns up punctually at the gym.

    i) Leepat, what do you benefit from speaking the untruth?

ii) Or could you be suffering from some kind of
“inferiority complex ” that explains why you need to brag about yourself so often. :(

  74. Hi Geraldine Ting,Veronique,James Tan /others @ 75 and 77,

By the time I wrote this comment,I believe you( Geraldine ) would have landed safely in HK.

Thanks for taking some time off to meet (10) of the SHCians over a cup of coffee/tea at Coffee Club and engaging in interesting chit chat and vast exchange of ideas.

Thanks also to James Tan who gave us a treat to celebrate Susan Tan’s “advanced” birthday.

  75. According to ChannelNewsAsia:

Stair climbing can be a great form of exercise for those looking to lose weight.

But doctors at Tan Tock Seng Hospital have found out it has another benefit. They say climbing two flights of stairs can lengthen life expectancy by 5.5 seconds.

Doctors also estimate that one can lose 2.7 kilogrammes a year by just running two flights of stairs daily.

Stair-climbing burns up to 1,000 calories every hour, or five times more energy compared to strolling, two times compared to swimming, and 1.8 times more than jogging.

This vertical exercise can also strengthen physique, improve the heart and lung functions as well as enhance blood circulation.

It helps develop stronger leg muscles, which also reduces the chance of osteoporosis.

“You get a better fitness all over because you train your whole body and not just your legs, because you have to use the handrail. And that helps in all the ways of life,” said Thomas Dold, champion of Vertical Marathon.

  76. Some of us only have annual medical check-up, some twice a year. Some every quaterly.

Sad to say I belong to the category of compulsory quaterly medical check. It took me quite a while to reconcile myself to share my medical liabilities. Today was my medical appointment with the doctor.

Weight at 75.9kg., height 1.72m., BMI 25.67 kg/m2. Ideal weight: 54.7-67.7 kg., BP 147/92. Aiyoh grossly overweight by about 8 kilos. The doctor classified as ‘High Risk’

My last sugar level was 7.1, now at 8.3, aiyah mati mati! I am not supposed to consume too much fruits yet I would gobble a whole guava and a whole bunch of grapes.

The staff nurse advice is, take only 6 pieces of grapes and at the most half of the guava. I am beginning to fear and ready to obey.

How am I to lose 8 kgs? Doctor say once a week bedminton not enough, dancing twice a week also not enough. Must exercise more, and do it everyday. I decided to obey the doctor and will start swimming 10 laps a day.

I am hoping for the first prize that Terence is dangling in front for me. Who will bring me to task for failing to achieve my ideal weight?

A reliable source claims that we must drink four glasses of water every morning and all our ailments will go away in three months, is it true?

    Dan

  77. Hi Dan,

I have been drinking 1.5 liter (about) of plain water first thing in the morning since year 2001 after I came across a article on how drinking water can cure every ailments on the internet. This is not true.

I still suffer from hypertension and cholesterol despite drinking 1.5 liter of water for so many years.

However it does help to cleanse your colon and you can pass motion more easily provide your colon is healthy. I will be going for my colonoscopy next week to make sure it is healthy. It will be done by a well-known doctor, a pioneer in colonoscopy procedures in Singapore.

  78. For those who are shy and undecided if you will take part in the “Look good, Feel good” program, I shall be bringing along a digital weighing machine to our monthly gathering on 30 Nov 2009.

If you think you are overweight, please feel free to participate. Collective participation can help us meet our dream to look good and feel good. Let your fellow SHC friends be your incentive to achieve your ideal weight.

Please let me know, on this forum, if you like to weigh yourself on 30 Nov.

    Terence Seah

  79. Dan

You don’t look overweight at all, I wonder where you keep all your extra kgs.
There are many controversies about medicines, herbs and even drinking water but one thing no one dispute is exercise for health. Even with exercise, my cardiologist gives me drugs to slow my heartbeat so that it does not have to work too hard and at the same time ask me to do exercises to strengthen my heart. Doctors are suppost to be intelligent!
I am just reading this new health book and it says, in America, more people die of medical treatments and use of drugs for health than car accidents. So if you go for checkup 4 times a year, you have actually increased your risk.
Last week I tried dancing with you guys. I didn’t get any exercise at all, only feels good looking stupid.

    What to do???

  80. Hi Tian Soo,

I was there and I don’t think anyone looked stupid. I thot all of us, including the other groups were having a good tim, letting our hair down (figuratively only).

The surprising thing for me was I was sweating, which I don’t, even in the gym!!

Like you say, any exercise is good for your body, even climbing the stairs.

Look forward to some more ‘exercising’

    Cheers

  81. Tian Soo,

Next round, we will make sure you twist, shake & shake, bump & boogie boogie longer on the dance floor. Frankly, Charles C, Hou Chong and your moves are so groovy and hip…..surprise all of us! Never judge a book by its cover…hehehe…very true, you guys learned so fast on the spot!

    Ah Nee

  82. Aiyo Terence

What were you thinking of huh??? Cup size or length hah?
Now I know where to find you when you go MIA ……

Trust you to come up with such topic: Keep in Shape… BTW, round is also a shape hor.

  83. Hi Terence #52,

Will certainly try my best to lose at least 3kg but will have to wait till after X’mas & New Year leh! Too many goodies to die for and since I’ve just celebrated the big ’60’, may as well eat first and die later, hahahaha…..

    Steven #62,
You’re right BMI 30+ is at high risk but what to do, I love my food too much and not ready to give it up yet. Have also neglected my ‘Tai Chi’ of late due to knee pain and gout (I think) as the soles of my feet hurt whenever I get up to walk – must be getting too heavy for my feet lah! Anyway, have decided to change the way I eat and I now start with Fruits early in the morning on an empty stomache and b/fast later or brunch thus, skipping a meal. Finally dinner in the evening, so hope this routine will help in some way. Will let you know if it’s working for me.
    Rgds, Lisa

  84. Hi Lisa #91,

Are you ready to give your height, ideal weight and current weight? Give it a go.

    Hi Sam Huat Huat,

Just a reminder that you are planning to reduce by 3 kg, by mid 2010. Hope you remember the carom game. Look good and feel good. If you reduce by 3 kg, you get a teddy bear.

    Terence Seah

  85. halo lua tua terence ,

    huat huat huat

  86. Just have a regular check-up with the polyclinic and noticed that I am now 60 kgs which is about 3 kgs less within a 2 months period.

This was achieved when I increased my morning exercises from 2 to 3 times a week to daily. I jog for about 30 to 40 minutes plus a warming/cooling down exercises of another 40 minutes.

The doctor advised me to eat more or else I may fall below the recommended healthy weight range of between 57 to 70 kgs. I need more calories to burn as it appear I now have more muscles due to my daily exercises.

  87. Hi everyone. I have just join SHC a few days ago and this is my first post. Still trying to find out where to register for some activities.

I am 175cm and weigh 82kg. Hope you can register my details.
    Thanks

  88. Hi Sam Soo #95,
Glad that you are taking part in the Look Good, Feel Good program. What is your ideal weight?

And Hi Sam Huat Huat #93,
Have you tried going down one kg? Buy yourself a digital weighing machine, and look at it every morning.

    Terence Seah

  89. Aiyoh Terence #92,
Pls don’t make me mention my weight again leh, I’ve already done so on #51 and dare not stand on the scale since I’ve been gorging myself like craze lately with so many invitations to eat, eat and eat……….. Anyway, what’s life without good food huh?, so just live and enjoy while I can before I have to give them all up, hahahaha………..
Will pop by one of these days as Mary from Perth will be back and we’re planning to meet there. Rgds, Lisa

  90. I am already 3 kgs less within a two months period even thought I am already in a healthy weight range. Let see what my weight is after my medical appt on 7 Jan 2010.

I believe anyone can have a meaningful weight loss if he or she has the burning desire to want it and prepare to do what it takes to achieve it.

It is so simple to lose weight – just jog for at least 30 minutes to 60 minutes daily and you will achieve meaningful result.

My burning desire to overcome my constipation gives me the motivation to wake up at 6 in the morning and jog for about 45 minutes plus another 40 minutes of warming and cooling down exercises. Losing weight is never my objective.

There are no excuses for not losing weight. The problem lies with you. Are you prepared to make an effort and do the necessary to achieve your goal?

  91. Well done Steven Ng #99,
Hope this will be an inspiration to me for my New Year’s resolution. I know it’s easier said than done but unfortunately I have a weakness for food, glorious food, so how? To make matters worse, I can’t jog now due to spikes in my knee which I’m contemplating whether or not to go for the pin-hole surgery as I was told that I’ll probably be MIA for a couple of months – so can’t afford it as I’m still working. Now I take the easy way out by letting my OSIM UDream chair do a little bit of stretching for me every morning, hahaha…..if you can call that Excercise…… Have a great weekend! Rgds, Lisa

  92. All along I have a self-image of myself as healthy with a slim physique. It help that I have a ‘light’ body structure. My weight never exceeded 65 kgs in my whole life even thought I have weakness for food and can really eat alot.

I have stop jogging for the last eight years after my GP diagnosed that I have a slip disc and advise me against jogging and suggested that I do brisk walking instead. I was then preparing to run for marathon. I have been jogging since I am in the early ’30.

About two months ago, I went to a polyclinic as they offered Family Physician Clinic – a comprehensive service to manage chronic diseases. I have hypertension and high blood cholesterol with a tendency to have constipation.

After a medical review the doctor suggested that I may not suffered from slip disc based on the medication which I am taking to enhance my bones density. He suggested that I re-start my jogging again as it may help in the management of hypertension and constipation but caution me not to overdo it.

Since then (about two months ago) I have been jogging daily for between 30 to 45 minutes. There are three occasions during this period I was not able to jog due to the rains. Instead I do stairs climbing for 45 minutes – 6 X 15 storey HDB flats that is equivalent to about 1,300 stairs or 2,600 stairs if it includes walking down the stairs. Please note the time taken does not include warming-up and cooling down exercises which taken up another 30 to 45 minutes.

Despite doing all this, out of sudden during the last three weeks I have an onset of constipation. Worried I went for a colonoscopy with a private clinic and also seek outpatient specialist treatment. Despite medication, there is still no improvement.

Few days ago, I happened to meet a friend who suggest I seek a Chinese sinseh and give the address of a popular sinseh. The Chinese sinseh diagnose that I have a weak kidney and give medication to enhance my energy. He also suggested that I continue with my daily exercises to enhance my kidney energy. After taking two doses of medication it appear that it has cured my constipation.

  93. Hi Steven #101,
Sorry to hear about your constipation woes. Have you tried taking bananas, papayas and other fruits in the morning? I used to have that problem but not anymore since I changed to having fruits on an empty stomach. The other thing is to drink lots of water of course which I’ve yet to get into the habit. Kind regards, Lisa

  94. Hi Lisa,

Thank you for your suggestions. In fact I have been eating only fresh fruits and drinking about 2 liter of water every morning. This has help me to prevent constipation until recently.

Fortunately the medication given by the Chinese sinseh seem to work at the moment and it help to overcome my constipation.

  95. Hi Steven NG,

    Hi Steven #101,
Sorry to hear about your constipation woes.

Try to eat more steamed ladies fingers and bananas daily
as they contains a lot of “SLIMY” substances inside the veggie/fruit.
