What should I be when I grow up?

The year 2009 will very soon come to an end. All of us will be one year older and one year closer to death.

When we were young we look forward to a new year and cannot wait to be old enough to date and party. Than as we grow up, we compete for a position in society and accumulate wealth. Now that we have counted our money and keep ourselves comfortable enough to have the time to log in this forum, I wander what next.

Do we still need dreams and embition to give us drive and energy to live on. Many of us have worked hard when we were young, so that when we get old, we can be comfortable and enjoy life. But now that we are here, what is it that we should be enjoying. If we eat too much we die. If we exert ourselves too vigorously, we die. If we just rest and sleep we also die. There are many enjoyable things which the young do that our body cannot follow. But if we do nothing death comes earlier.

So what is it that we should wish for in 2010?

  1. we often read of how some folks just abruptly leave their family and friends even before their health fail them, leaving behind lots of lose ends for them to pick up. so it is a good idea to start thinking about plans early. i know this thot will excite some “insurance folks and wealth management gurus”, but i am referring to thinking of how we can write out or work out the last chapter in a more meaning way; like a good legacy, probably looking at who or whose life in your relatives circle, friends and even the poor in another country that we can raise the quality of their lives, improve from our wealth of experience.
helping others to live a better life can be an enriching phase than just plain giving to others so that they can have a better life. work on people rather than projects and properties.

  2. Yes,Tian Soo, without a strong purpose in life, we just drift along. That purpose was easy to define when we young and had many unfulfilled tasks like bringing up our family, progressing in our career, etc, etc. But now our children are big and independent, how should we continue to live the rest of our life. Not necessarily in order of priorities… maintaining good health, relationships, pursuing our hobbies and interestes and some measure of frivolities at SHC to lighten the day.

  3. Dear Tian Soo

When I was younger, I never gave a thought about what I would like to do in my twilight years. Yes, because I took for granted that my spouse will be with me.

Now that the children are grown and have a life of their own, I feel the empty nest syndrome. Especially so when they reach marriagable age. Sometimes, the feeling can get quite bad.

Although I have always been careful about my diet and I do my regular dose of exercise, I cannot escape the ageing process. I feel my fair share of aches and pains. So what do I do?

I bake, cook, sing anywhere from the bathroom to the kitchen to the living room to the KOK clubs and soon the Cabaret Nite Club (a pity its only for one night).

With all the friends and activities in SHC, and if we are game, I think we can be pretty much occupied. A good idea by Rosalind to have mini gatherings according to zones. Even a handful of people gathering for a cuppa and cakes, cooking lessons, singing or dancing would be fun.

My fave wish is to have someone to drink kopi with me anytime, anyday anywhere and talk about anything under the sky/sun/moon??

    Kopi Tian Soo?

    Cheers
    Carly

  12. To Myself:
When I first read this, was wondering what the heck is this about? After thinking about it a bit, I guess there is just one more stage to go ……….. DEATH? No, lah!!! Chor-e chor-e chor-e!!!
The word is “ENLIGHTENMENT – aka NIVARNA” ….. simple word but …….. have different meanings to everyone at different stages of one’s HUMAN life/existence.
I guess when you reached there; i.e. ENLIGHTENMENT – aka NIVARNA …………. you will be so busy “pursuing so many things that you had (finally) given up to reach there” that you will have no time to even THINK about anything else ……..
Example: Imagine, if you have wealth and giving it ALL away (bcos you want to attain Enlightenment) …. do you honestly have time to think about anything else when you are looking for ways and means to fill up that empty stomach on the next meal?
Imagine, if you have time and you give it all up to others, working in ACTUAL third world locations for free (and at your own expenses) – bcos you want to do good to attain Enlightenment, do you think you have the time to even ponder what you want to do with “OWN – free – time”?
The circle of life goes round and round ……. maybe when you have everything, it’s time to loose them ….. to give essence to the meaning of being ALIVE!
VERY CHIM! Rite? bcos I also dun even know what I writing about….

Well, Ivan, we are some long minutes away from Xmas and so you’re forgiven if you start ki hong liao. I’ll join you lah.

In the wonderland of NIVARNA next to Nevada, folks show their navels (unwashed since birth) unabashedly. Light years ahead of mankind, they are all so enlightened that they don’t need light to see at nite, empty their stomachs & loosen their bowels anytime everywhere> The “everything” they have are their pants or skirts and so they don’t mind loosen to a loose (and eventually lose them) them but mind you, they don’t lose their moral values and are highly respected/regarded.

Ok, Ivan, shall we book this Xmas eve flight to NIVARNA together and if we find life miserable there, that they’re no enlightened bros but blather blight blighters, we can exit to Nevada…………………..

    Or Nirvana?

Hehe, like you I oso dunno what I writhing abt………

  14. I have the same sentiment as Tian Soo… life is so strange!
Some live to eat (enjoy) and some eat to live (survive), well, for me, I love to eat. No money very “cham” got money also problematic? How I wish I have plenty of time for myself but when I am on leave, I am worry of how to spent my time. So “susah” lah. Tian Soo’s last para mentioned so many “Die…Die…Die”, aiyo…I have 2 wishes haven’t fulfill, am still working very hard to achive it. Ivan’s comments is so “chim”……what are you trying to say? apa macam, is it “There is something more important than MONEY”. In the end we have to go “there” empty handed. hehehe……..try not to think about all these, lets enjoy ourselve during this festive seasons! Have FUN & Cheers! :)

    Ah Nee

  15. Dear All,
After having read all your comments, I have one thing to share which I feel is impt to do. As none of us can tell how long we’ll stay or leave this universe, the best thing is to ensure that you’ve made a will so that no matter what happens, everything will be well taken care of with no unfinished business. Once that’s done, we’ll have no further worries but to enjoy ourselves within our limits (financially and health wise) and when it’s time to go, we can go as freely as we come into this world. Here’s wishing everyone a Merry X’mas and Happy Holidays! Keep smiling and be happy, Best wishes, Lisa.

  16. Wah Lau!! Chrismas eve and so many comments. Are you all sober??
I have just read that it is now scientifically proven that, Heart desease, Overweight, Diabetes and Cancer and be cured by just changing to a lowfat, plant base diet. It sounds so easy until I was at the coffeeshop just now. The Mutton Bryani taste like heaven.

Do you guys think it is better to eat well and die happy or be a vegan and die slowly?

  17. Agreed with Geraldine @19. But try to have both occurences at separate times, please………….

    Lisa @17,
Additional to the WILL; being just a piece of (recycled) paper … it is better/achievement to make it known to all concerned (listed your last will) who gets what BEFORE you leave. If not, that piece of (shit) paper gets everyone named going for/cutting each others throats ….. especially when thousands/millions/billions/zillions are at stake! Let’s get/be real! If you are not happy at anything/anytime, tell them that you will just give it all to the living members of the third/fourth/fifth generation upon adulthood from your generation after you leave via a TRUST. By then nobody remembers and no one gets at each others throats……
It becomes like winning a top prize in a lottery…….
Have a great holdiay, everyone…….enough of “ki hong liao”……!!!

  18. Some people are curious about Nirvana. Here’s a story about Nirvana…

Once upon a time there was a paradise called Nirvana. Among the abundant flora and fauna in Nirvana was a human couple living in absolute bliss.

Outside Nirvana, living in Limbo, writhing in frustration was an evil-eyed serpent whose sole goal in life was to destroy Nirvana. An opportunity came and the wily serpent tempted the woman with a rosy fruit enriched with magical powers. The woman wanted the magical powers and was seduced! Then she asked the man to take a bite which he did!

Immediately lightning flashed and thunder clashed. Heavy rain fell….Amidst the terrifying pandemonium was heard the serpent’s high-pitched heeheeheeheeee…The serpent was in ecstasy.

When the storm abated, the shivering couple found themselves suffering in Limbo. Nirvana had disappeared.

    Epilogue
It is year 2009…Many people are looking for Nirvana including the SHC’s TimL and IvanL. Will they succeed? No one knows for the evil-eyed serpent is still around with its cache of temptations…. :( The End.

    Happy reading … :)

  19. Frankly, Jass-T, I dont fancy living in Norvana where there’s this hissing serpent which snores 24/7, awake and asleep.

I prefer a place where this nutritious and tasty fruit geows. So, any place with wild banans in abundance is my Nirvana and, going to sleep shortly, I shall continue my quest searching for this elusive land of bananas………..

    G’nite.

  20. Hi TimL @# 22,

You are hankering after Hua1 Guo3 Shan1 where succulent bananas and peaches grew bountifully, and where your idol, Sun Wukong was king of the mt. Well, like Nirvana, it’s gone and…better to be pragmatic …go to the Philippines where you’ll find plenty of banana plantations. :)

    X’mas cheer ;)

  21. Well, Jass-L, you’re obviously unaware that Hua Guo Shan was overrun by the insurgents and terrorists and Sun Wukong was sacked from his kingdom which however turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

As Sg welcomes foreign talents with arms and legs, he has made it his home, got married and Step-on-a-phoney Sun was born & she continues the heritage of being expansively idolized.

Yes, “pragmatic” is the in thing to do and so I am more perked up and determined to look for my Nirvana of Bananas in 2010 and make it a Banana Republic where Santa Claus plays golf and Tiger Woods rides the sleigh instead of sleaze….…………

  22. Hey TimL @# 24
I got my history of Hua Guo Shan from Xi You Ji. You got yours from …where?

My goodness! You got the divine primate’s genealogy so twisted, I think I see him snorting ‘smoke’ from his perch on a billowy cirrus cloud! You’d better take cover until the new year!

Banana Republic with a golf course and sleigh rides? Hmm .. quite possible what with the dreadful climatic changes. But may be it’s more convenient to buy over late MJ’s Neverland, then construct a golf course and a huge indoor ski field (like in Dubai). Next, import a couple of reindeer and a sleigh from North Pole and …you’re in business! :)

Good to dwell in Dreamland. :)

  23. “I got my history of Hua Guo Shan from Xi You Ji. You got yours from …where?”

Jass-T, yours was written by Woo Chern Ern. I got mine from Wood Churn Urn’s See You Chick (soya sauce chicekn) and woe befalls if you dont believe me.

Mr Wood was uncanny enough to predict in his book this Navel Land called Dupe Bayi owned by the Mud-Tomb family which was to be the oasis of Central Asia but not without going thru some pain and setbacks first. So you must have also read the book to know that there will be a huge indoor golf course with sleighs pulling reindeers from North Pole to ski in this Navel land.

  24. Hi ChristinaCWH,

The Nirvana story is a piece of creative writing. Having said that, I believe that Nirvana=Garden of Eden=Paradise, depending on where one is coming from. Hope you had fun reading it as I had writing it. :)

    Cheers,
