A slight change to how monthly gatherings are organised in 2010

If you are reading this forum, it means that you are likely a familiar face to the monthly gatherings.  For a long time now, we have our regular venue at Hans, as it is large, flexible, and it offers food & beverages conveniently at the counter. The numbers vary between 80 and 130 each time, can be very noisy, and usually a time and place to catch up with old SHC friends.  For new comers, the monthly gathering can be a touch and go affair, and can be rather intimidating as everybody seems to know everybody.

Sometimes, our monthly gatherings are organised in restaurants, function rooms, public beaches, condos, etc.  Again, the numbers can be pretty big.

We will still continue to hold the large monthly gatherings, and we will still have the Event Organsier.  But, for a change, in 2010, we will have smaller groups too.  The idea is to give the new members a chance to interact among themselves, and when they are brave enough to join the large monthly affairs.  For convenience, I may arrange to call up these small groups, based on their joining dates.  We will try this idea out throughout 2010.

In case, you are not aware, all SHCians have a prefix tagged to their name eg SHC807.  This means this member was registered in July 2008.  Due to some reasons, some members may have two prefixes because they tried to join at different times.  But, the numbers are small.

You are welcome to give your feedback.

  1. It is true that too big a group meeting can be overwhelming for newbies.

What I like to see is a SHC gathering whereby I can get to meet members who are staying near or not that far away from me.

What say you, Terence, if the monthly gathering is divided into zones? North Zone, East Zone, etc?

Everyone from this club will be able to meet at special events such as the Cabaret Nite, D & D, holiday trips, etc.

Just my 2 cents’ worth of input.

  2. Terence, I am in the East Zone.

I do believe you want SHC to be more than just a social club. If all the members are active and remains members for the next decade or more, then it is good to know of SHCians who are within reach to help or be helped in emergencies. By then most of us will be doddering old fogies eh? :p

  4. Hi Rosalind and new members living in the East zone,

Let’s give your suggestion a try. We will gauge based on the response of new members to this forum. Would you or anyone have a place in mind in the East zone that is reasonably convenient? Then, we gauge the feedback from new members.

Currently, Sam Goh is organising a monthly event, also in the East zone for all members.

  5. Terence, thank you for your support of my suggestion in creating Zones for members to get together.

If Sam is staying in the East, then it’ll be great if he can be Head of SHC East Zone. Dan Huang has taken the initiative of starting SHC West Zone.

There can be lots of activities planned with inter-Zone competitions in bowling, etc….

Please forgive me if I let my head goes into overdrive.

    Cheers

  6. Hi Rosalind #6,

Let the idea of a East zone be developed.

Just a point on EOs or ECs, it is better that SHCians who are interestd in developing an idea raise their hands. Let’s not leave it to Sam.

  7. Terence..
Whatever, pls keep the usual Monthly Gathering.Zones can be added for smaller groups…good idea.

It is true sometime in big gathering, some newbies quite shy,sit alone at one corner & blink blink!,just watch..so kesian..hehe
So, we as ‘silver’ member should approach & make them comfortable..rite?

Through interaction..we will know where they reside, their hobbies etc (but don be too kaypo la,scare them away!)..& we can take it from there..arrange among ourselves for cuppa tea/kopi..or even jalan2?..there u are..become kawan oredi :)

  9. Hi
I am new and wish to meet up for first time with all of u this forthcoming D & D on 31 Dec and hope to be a regular to attend the monthly gathering.
I am pretty shy and an introvert, so it is not easy for me to approach stranger. But I know I have to make a 1st step.
But, once you get to know me, I am a very cheerful person.
I am taking a break from work for time being and wish to take this opportunity to know more people.

  10. Hahaha!!

I’m trying to post to the Monthly Gathering site but failed all four attempts! Must be the site problem or..??

Anyway, this December meet is in the north-east and all the Hougang (Au kang) gang should be there.

May I use this post to also inform Ah Huat Sam that I have made payment to his account Ref: 8547… so sorry…

    Merry Christmas!

  11. Hi Rosalind

I joined SHC less than 9 months and still consider myself a newbie. I like your comments re “emergency help”.Perhaps we can form an Easterner group with the help of ‘oldies’ like nor, caroline gee, mary chan etc?
