Pipe Line Ramble X-treme! Sat, 10 Apr.

(This post was written by Jeffrey)

Date: 10 April 2010 (Saturday)

Start Time: 9 am (approx 9 hours)

Meeting point: Woodland Town Centre, plaza between Blocks 2A and 4A (end point of Pipe Line Ramble 4)

Getting there:
by MRT – Marsiling MRT Station (about 1 km walk)
by Bus – Bus service nos 170, 856, 903, 911, 912

Leaders: Jeffrey Lim and Joyce Tan

For those who have done part or all of the Pipe Lime ramble series, this is for the masochist in us. The Pipe Line Ramble X-treme is a 4-in-1 combination of the four walks. Total distance is about 25 km walking through a variety of ground from pavement, parks, scrub land, grassland, forest, people’s backyard and of course on the pipe line at certain sections, if you are so inclined. The terrain at parts will be hilly with a few streams to cross and a few walls to climb too.

There will be a lunch stop around Turf City or Sixth Avenue. We’ll play it by ear on that day exactly where.

The walk will end at Pearl’s Hill around 5 or 6 pm. From there we can adjourn to Keong Siak Street for dinner at the either of the famous zhi char restaurants, Kok Sen or Tong Ah to put back all the calories we burnt that day!

The walk will be quite rigorous and be prepared. Wear trekking shoes, if you have otherwise make sure that what you’re wearing gives good traction on uneven ground. Also make sure you are comfortable with walking for 9 hours at a sustained brisk pace before signing up.

  1. I was reading this and it sounded really good until I saw the last sentence ‘walking for 9 hours’! Alamak! I don’t think I’ll survive without an oxygen tank hoisted onto my back! :P

I must say kudos to the walkers who will be doing this walk. Way to go!!!

    Cheers
    Ros

  2. hi Jeffrey,
I really like to join you for the walk but climbing walls… Is it going to be vertical climbing like the one at Bukit Timah hill? Could you elaborate please?

  3. I cant help but to put up a bounty for whoever can show me a wall anything but vertical. Hehe, hope there’s a claimant after my return from lunch bite……….

  4. Wow EOs,
    … 25km … 9hours … no joke arhh/leh…
Can / Will think about it?
If going for this walk, me have to go buy a new/appropriate pair of shoes …. first! :)
Let you know by 01April2010 – Fools’ Day.
    Cheers,
    Ivan

  5. Hi Ivan,

Go and find your combat boot if it is still can be found in your storeroom.:) It will come handy especially in this kind of walk.

I still remember when I was in the army/reservist training, pipelines were one of the important installations/facilities which we need to have it protected during wartime. We even have training around the pipeline to familiarize ourselves.

I have an important matter to attend to on this particular date. Let see whether I can postpone it so that I attend this event. This is like walking down the memory lane and sees what the changes to the area are since my army/reservist days. I may not have the opportunity to visit again.

  6. Mary#2

There are some obstacles along the way, including some walls, drains, squeezing through holes in fences but nothing insurmountable. We have all done it on Pipe Line Ramble 1 to 4. The walls we’ll encountering would not be like going up Bt Timah Hill, rather like climbing over your neighbour’s fence.

  7. Hi Jeffrey,

So good of you to organise this walk.

I would like to join the walk. I may not complete it tho’. But no fear, if I cannot make it to the end, I’ll just crawl or mke my way to civilisation and hail a taxi.

I have marked it in my diary and will meet you at the hawker centre between the 2 blocks you mentioned. I remember it as the time we had dinner there, all drenched after our Pipeline ramble. Is it correct?

Those of you who are hesitating, don’t. I don’t know of any other groups that will organise this. Just bring a hat, s small knapsack for your water,( or cosmetics if necessary, for those photoshoots), extra cash for a taxi,(or ambulance), a light rain-coat and you are good to go.

You don’t have to climb mountains, just do the extreme!! And you will be accompanied by your SHC friends. A certificate of completion will be issued by SHC.

Yam Seng, Gan Bei and Hip Hip Hooray to Jeff.

    Cheers

  8. Hi Jeffery and Joyce,
I wonder if we could turn this into a 2-stage walk. We could do Ramble 1 for all participants and Ramble X-treme for those who want to carry on further.

  9. Hi guys!

I’m only interested in where the walk ends: Keong Saik Road! Please note that it is spelled “Saik” and it is “Road” not “Street”.

How do I know this? Well, Keong Saik was a “Tan” and a successful businessman of his days. But he was no relation of mine… I hail from the other Tan named after the hospital…

Now, dinner after a long 9-hour day… maybe I should join you guys… just for dinner, haha.

And adjourn to one of the nearby houses… no, not the ones you’re thinking about, but the many watering holes around.

  10. Joyce & Jeffrey,
I think Conrad’s suggestion #11 to allow for wider participation of those whose legs could carry them up to maximum of two segments… from starting point at Woodlands to Turf City. Of course, they would find their own transport and meet up with the veterans at Keong Saik for dinner AND also receive a Certificate of semi-completion !!

  11. Hi Conrad/ Charles/ All participants,

Oops…, no hijacker here but owing to Jeffrey’s busy travelling schedules, am helping him to update this post.

As in all previous outings, the participants are allowed to break off when they can’t continue with the group. This walk is no army training, but please INFORM the EO if you have to leave half way into the trek.

Jeffrey is giving an estimate of 9hrs so besides lunch break, we’ll have short break for drinks & snacks… i mean bring your own isotonic drink and energy bar to help make your walk an enjoyable one.

Don’t forget your poncho, see u.

    Cheers,
    JoyceT

  12. Hi Joyce,

Based on what you said, I believe any walkist can join in
and leave at any leg of the journey, is that right?

In that case, maybe you can give a schedule of the time you
will arrive at each ‘leg’ and time of leaving that
location. Suggest maybe at least half an hour grace can be
given at the end of each of the ‘leg’, both to allow
current walkists enuf rest as well as some time for the
    new batch to arrive.

    james

  13. Hi James,

I can’t give you a schedule with half an hour grace for each break point, sorry. As we’ll be moving as a group, any walkist can drop off at any point as long as they can find their way back, but to join at a specific point/time….?

Since the lunch break will take a longer while, perhaps we can arrange to meet the ‘new batch’ there/then but again, the venue for lunch is still ‘play by ear’. I guess we can keep in contact should anyone would like to join in around that time. Other short breaks will be 5-10mins kind for own refreshment on-the-go so joining in then is not encouraged.

Thanks for your interest in this walk, looking forward to have you with us as usual :-)

    Cheers,
    JoyceT

  14. Hi Jeffrey & Joyce

My “mental will” is strong on taking up the challenge but my “physical spirit” is running to the opposite direction (>o<)

Still need time to make these 2 see “eye-to-eye” and come to a conclusion…. ^_^

Any deadline to confirm attendance ?? (+_+)

    Cheers – Pauline

  15. Hi Pauline,

Don’t worry about the deadline, take your time to negotiate with your ‘physical spirit’ (^_^)

Just take note of the date for this walk: 10Apr., time: 9am.
    Hope to see u around…??

    Cheers,

  16. Joyce,

    Thanks for the update.
I would be able to join only after lunch.
Will keep in touch with you about your location before lunch on the big day.

    Note:
There’s a difference between ‘dateline’ and ‘deadline’.
Hopefully you mean the latter, else we’ll be in another
    timezone.

    james

  17. I can see rumbles (over where, when to find who, and English) long before even 1 shoe is worn for the ramble.

It’s quite easy for those who cant tahan the long walk to find those who dare to walk. Tag yr ankles with eletronic tracking devices but of cos you need to distinguish yeself from those on day-release. Toy’R’us has exciting choices that look like bangles and bracelets.

Dateline……….it has to be the line underlining the date as opposed to a “deadline” which is usually a pre-determined “by” date. “Usually” bcos the date one is dead is also a deadline, the mother of all “deadlines” but you cant decide when it shd come.

Kenneth-T, next to your name stand the words “dinner only”. Lest people come to eat you up, better clarify that you’re only buying dinner for all who complete the walk. I am mulling over whether I shd go for yr free dinner as well but for now, gg for my k’ok..kiddo got a date, sigh.

  18. Joyce-T, now you are adding more confusion with this ‘d’line’. Mentally I am in decline sso cant see what this word, new to me, means. A line behind which the mad dazzles? Or a line the naughty stands on to take a heavy drizzle as punishment? Or a line Dick forms with you know what?

This aside, I cant help but to look up at the 2 guys on the banner. Both charm with their happy smiles but with one distinct difference. One’s smile is rather innocent, the other, a bit hum hum sup sup……..definitely, will make a shy gal blush and say “aiyah………” and a brave one gush “lai leh……..”

  19. Hi Joyce

No worries… I thought it would easily be passed over as a minor typo error… (^o^)

..and am surprised it would catch the “sharp eyes” of other SHCians… (WoW) Interesting… ‘cos this motivated me to go check up the word in the dictionary too.. (^_~) hmmm.. great… got free english lesson here too… ^_^

Meanwhile, I still can’t commit to the strenous challenge yet… but have marked the date and time down on my calendar. Will get back to you soon on this ya…

    Cheers – Pauline

  20. #27 IvanL, Joyce has called me earlier to confirm the meeting point. Unfortunately, I’ve tried several times but cant open Yellowpages/maps.

Can you try below, else type in the postal code 731004 you will see the correct location, as well:
    http://www.streetdirectory.com/asia_travel/travel/travel_id_46299/travel_site_122952/

Our final ramble PLR4 ended: past Woodlands Town Garden proceed straight ahead another 5 to 10mins; arrived at Woodlands Centre Road-Blk 4A Foodcentre. Across the main road “Woodlands Centre Point” is a mosque. Confused? :D , drop me an email with your contact no., easier to explain via phone :)

The meeting point is about 10mins walk from Marsiling MRT else take a bus.

    Have fun!
    Rgds,
    ChristinaCL

  21. Dear Participants and those who are considering,,,,

We had introduced this PLR in 4parts. Some members had joined us for one or two or even three of these rambles. PLR 1 & 4 are fairly easy, though still not a “walk in the park” whereas PLR 2 & 3, there are challenges that, either you have not done since you were a child; or never doeth before hahaha; upon completion there is certainly a sense of Achievement!! :D :D

It is best to join this ramble at START POINT, walk till you no longer seem to “feel your legs” then take your leave. :D
It is difficult to estimate time/location to join in mid-way!

I am not sure if you can still view the photos of PLR 2 & 3, to get an idea of the trail, good to view them if still accessible.

We started PLR 1 from Outram on 12Apr08; PLR 2 02Aug08; PLR 3 11Oct08; PLR 4 14Mar09 which ended in Woodlands.
The Xtreme, is done in reverse sequence.

Yeah! we certainly would consider issuing a Certificate upon completion of Minimum TWO PLRs challenges commencing from Start Point-Woodlands!

    Regards,
    ChristinaCL

  22. Hi Jeffrey & Joyce,

I did two out of the four previously. Am looking out for this one. Almost missed it.

Please sign me in for this event.

    Thank you.

  23. Hi Joyce

I would like to join in the walk. However, not sure if I can complete the whole ramble extreme as this is the first time I’m trying.

    Regards,
    Gabriella

  24. Hi Gabriella,

It’s perfectly OK if you cannot complete the whole distance.
Please refer to Charles’ comment @ #8… exit to civilisation is not far away…

    Cheers,
    JoyceT

  25. Hi guys!!

Just saw my name as attending the dinner… but, unfortunately, I’ll be away in Phuket and so cannot join the party.

Have a great time and enjoy this “extreme” walk!

    Kenneth

  26. Aiyo…..can anyone help me! how to go to Woodland Town Centre from Hougang by public transport. Joyce Tan & Ivan Lim, I will follow you?…… :)

    Ah Nee

  27. Ah Nee #42 (n Joyce),
We have to take the MRT Red Line. So, suggest we meet at AMK MRT Station at 8.00am – 8.10am on 10Apr. Then at Woodlands MRT Station / Bus Terminal, we take the Feeder Bus Svc to meeting point.

NOTE: If any SHCians joining us at AMK MRT Station, pls let us know by this Friday.

    Regards,
    Ivan

  28. Hi EOs,

Pl register me for the 1st part of the walk i.e. I’ll leave the group at/after the lunch break.

    Hi Ah Nee, Ivan,
I’ll be following JoyceT to the assembly point. Will let Joyce explain our arrangement. See u all there :)

  29. Hi Jeffrey/Joyce,

Hope it’s not too late to register for the 1st part of the walk, terminating in Turf City / Sixth Avenue. ( same as Charles).

BTW I’ll leave my car at 6th Avenue centre around 8am, and then take bus 170 to Woodlands Centre Road. See all of you there.

  30. Hi Ah Nee, Ivan & Jass,

I’ll be at YCK MRT around 8.10am, board the train that arrives(from AMK) and go to the last carriage. We’ll meet if the timing is right, otherwise, we’ll wait at Marsiling MRT, near contro1 room. C ya…

    Thanks/Regards,
    JoyceT

  31. Hi Joyce,

What time will you be at the Marsiling MRT? Can I meet you there? I really need guidance in taking public transport.

    Thanks,
    veronique

  32. Wei Wei Ah Nee #44, I have checked with one of my colleague who stayed in Woodland. She has given instructions on how to get to Woodland Town Centre. She said to alight at Woodland MRT then take bus 911 (the shortest bus route) from the bus interchange right below the station. The rest of the buses take a longer route. If you alight at Marsiling MRT, you’ll need to walk a little longer & cross the overhead bridge to the opposite side to get to the bus stop. I don’t like using the overhead bridge so I choose to alight at Woodland MRT. Since you don’t know the way, you better follow us lah. Ivan, you too? Lina & I will be meeting at Bishan MRT at 8:00am.

  33. Hello Suzhang…..after reading all the members’ kind advice of how to get to Woodland Town Centre from Hougang. I still find it a hassle to take public transport. My son has kindly agreed to fetch me to the meeting point.

Charles C, not sure if you are driving…..if not, I can “tongpan” you. One more space, anyone? Ivan, Joyce….

    Ah Nee :)

  34. Hi Joyce,

Pls register me for the walk.

I have already covered the 4th part of the walk last year. As I have something to attend to, can I join you later. I heard that the 3rd part is very challenging, so do not want to miss it.

Joyce, could I get it touch with you. Pls email me for your contact no. Once I am done with my errand, will get in touch with you guys on the whereabout.

    rgds
    susan tan

  35. Hi Veronique,

Sorry for late response, was busy this morning.
I’m not good at taking public buses other than my daily routine from home to office. I think taking MRT is easier, so my plan is to reach Marsiling MRT around 8.30am and walk to the meeting point.

Thanks to SuZhang’s input #49 on taking bus service no.911 from Woodlands MRT, altho i find the loop service kind of confusing, it may be easier for you?

Do let me know if you’re coming to Marsiling MRT :-)

    Hi Ah Nee,
So nice of you, but i’ll be meeting another few fellow walkists on way to Marsiling lor…

    Hi SusanT #51,
Will email you my contact, glad you’re joining us.

    Cheers,
    JoyceT

  36. Wow!…
This walk is like a marathon or rather an AmazingRace!

Wish i could join but timing tak ngam again…hhmm
I love to walk..when i see the photos that OC attached..
Hey..in the album..everybody had fun time together like kindergarten kids(hold hands somemore!hehe) went for an excursion…cute!
the pipeline..so nostalgic..when i was staying in kampong in my younger days…hop around so fun!

    AhNee & SuzChang..
remember to smile sweetly when photo session…u both look kesian in the album!…ooppss…haha..dont angry ah! :)

  37. Hi Joyce,

I will be joining the walk in the morning from Woodlands and dismiss myself after lunch as per your indication.

    Thanks and see you then.

    Bernie

  38. Hi Ah Nee @50,

Wah, lucky I saw your post. Thanks very much. I want to be tompanged. Where can I wait? And what time?
Lucky me. Maybe buy Toto can strike big money and go Taiwan

  39. AhNee #50, what a friend….

Hi Joyce #52, according to my colleague, 911 is the shortest bus route to the Town Centre. Erh… the rest will take a longer loop. Btw, I won’t be walking till the end, so will go off after lunch.

Nor #53, how to smile when you are in that kind of situation?

Charles #55, ya lucky you….not only must you buy Toto, you must buy 4D, Big Sweep, go to the cruise ship, play jackpot & go to Sentosa Casino too..haha..sure strike big money !!

  40. Hi JeffL/JoyceT, fyi, MaryT has informed that she will be away this weekend.

My ankles still complaining! going for tui na twice per week,,, might not be good to strain them further. I’ll call either of you perhaps on Sat.

    Have fun on the pipelineS!

  41. Charles & Ivan……

Since we are heading North….I suggest Ivan wait for me at Kovan MRT station, Taxi stand (Heartland Mall exit). From there we go and fetch Charles C at Paya Lebar Methodist Church…..then we proceed from there…..call you all later for the timing…..have to get ready for my “pon cha cha” class now……

    Ah Nee

  42. Hi SuZhang #57,
Good recommendation for those coming from that direction, thanks much.

    Chris #58,
Noted. Please take good care of your ankles, see you nxt time.

    Gabriella #61,
Will look out for you/SK @ Marsiling MRT…

    To All participants,
Guess Jeffrey is all ready to take us thru this ramble, do prepare yourself with more drinks.

    See ya,
    JoyceT

  43. Dear Joyce,
All this while, I’ve mulling to go or not to. Ever since completing only the last leg of the Pipeline ramble last year, I’ve been rather curious about the other 3 sections that I’ve missed. But now, I am nursing a hoarse voice…occupational hazard. As such, please remind me to keep quiet like a cloistered nun while on the ramble tomorrow. Thanks.

    I’m coming!!

  44. Hi Joyce Tan / Jeffrey Lim ,

I will be joining all of you for the 9 hr challenging walk.

It’s now or never whether rain or shine.

  45. Hi Joyce and Jeffrey Lee,

Thanks for organising this X treme walk. We were blessed with excellent weather and cannot ask for more.

The night before I woke up 4 times in anticipation of this walk .

As I was late for 15 mins and had to run all the way from Woodlands Town Centre to the Marsiling MRT stn . You guys and gals walk really fast and had to be a speedy gonzales to finally catch up with all of you.

I was almost exhausted at the last lap heading towards Turf Club city where we had to climb the undulating slopes

Many thanks to Charles Wee for helping to carry my haversack during the last lap. I was happy I was able to walk all the way to TCC.

The moral of the story was it doesn’t pay to be late.

  46. Hi All,

Thanks to everyone for being such great company. Thanks also to Jeff Lim and Joyce Tan for being such good EOs.

It was good of Jeff to push the group so we could lunch at Turf City instead of Bkt Panjang, otherwise I think quite a lot would have left at Turf City. And Joyce is always smiling and full of encouragement for everyone.

Also must thank Ah Nee and her handsome son for getting us to the start point on time. We even had a leisurely but full breakfast (ABF)

After dinner thanks also to Boon Liang who sent us nearly home to Ponggol!!!

Suz C, I know how you feel, as if all your legs are broken. I think my hip is also damaged. I cannot walk now, only shuffle along, 1 step at a time, 3 secs per step. But still a challenging and invigorating experience. Good nite

  47. Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to echo Charles and Steven. Thank you Jeffrey/Joyce for a thoroughly enjoyable walk. The weather was gr8 and the company was fun.

It was tiring but then it wouldnt be extreme if not, rite?

  48. Hi EO Joyce & Jeff,

Thanks for organising & doing this X-treme with us. It was really tooooo X-treme for me. You are right Charles, my legs too are like bachang ka..cannot walk but drag my feet since Sat. afternoon. Good thing we did not continue after lunch. If not, I can’t even walk today. But, it was truely a good experience and workout. I guess I will never do it had I not join this round. Thanks to Lina who’s always there to hold my hand. Thanks everyone too for the great company.

SK & Sally, I really admired you both, you were great !

  49. Hi everyone,

Luckily, I didn’t continue after Turf City. When I reached home, I discovered that I had a blister on each side of both feet. My socks were wet. I slept the whole of Sunday to recuperate from the aches. Nevertheless, it was a great adventure with our ever smiling EOs.
Thanks, everyone, for being such great company, especially Ashari and Conrad ,who patiently paced with Bernie and myself who were lagging last.
On hindsight, I should have waited at Zhenghua Park as the PLR 4 was quite punishing. Then, maybe, I could complete the rest of the route.
BTW, will there be any re-runs of PLR 1 and 2 in future?

  50. Hi Suzhang, Ah Nee and Lina,

The 3 “Charlie Angels” were very fit indeed and great jenny walkers.
They were far ahead of most of us during last lap to TurfCC undulating slopes.
Thanks for so much of the fun although was very tiring.

Went for a dip in the pool after the walk to ease my aching dandy long legs. Ha! ha! :)

  51. A Big Thank You to Jeff for fulfilling my wish in organizing this extraordinary extreme ramble. I’ve waited for exactly 2 years. Furthermore, this PLR X-treme is your brainchild inspired after the PLR 1.

Much thanks to Joyce for being a great and caring assistance to Jeff and all.

Dear Jeff and Joyce, your efforts are truly appreciated. EXCELLENT!

I look forward to the next XX- treme……………….

    Have a fabulous day!
    veronique

  52. Hi EO Joyce & Jeff,

This is the 2nd time that I joined the walk. I must really extend a BIG Thankyou to all the EOs for organizing this extraordinary extreme ramble and to everyone for being such great company & so helpful for the whole event.

Though I also had 2 big blisters on my big toe and the last small toe on my left leg, because of the wet sock, but I really enjoyed the whole journey.

Yes, it was a great adventure with our ever smiling EOs and SHCs.

Am looking forward to join you all again.
    Take care,
    Lilian

  53. Bravo! to all the PLR x-treme walkers…..the x-treme walk was a great challenge to folks like us, hehehe…I meant 45 & above! If not for my dirty & “koyak” shoe, I would have continued the 2nd half of the walk after lunch. What an excuse….hahaha…..

I received some snapshots….I viewed it together with my son and he said wow! So happening huh…..all of you made it, amazing!!!!….. The weather was fine; except for the uphill, down slope, big “longkang” muddy ground and of course the huge big pipe lah…other than these, it was an enjoyable trail throughout. I didn’t suffer any aches & pains or blisters, just felt a little tired, that’s all. :)

I would like to thank the smiling & joyful EOs, Jeffrey & Joyce for leading the PLR x-treme trail and the guys for helping us through the obstacles along the way. A big thank you to the walkers too, you all are great companions!

    Ah Nee

  54. Hi,

I received these tips to recuperate my muscles.

From SK Chua, sleep with my legs raised. This I did.
From someone in V’nam, eat bananas to replace my body salts. This I also did.
From experience, drink 100+ or any other ‘sweat’ drinks (they all taste like sweat anyway). This I also did.

And you know what? Amazingly my leg muscles are not stiff now. Going swimming later. Only have some small blisters.

You can try this if you have stiff legs still.

Steven, I know 12 people completed the extreme walk. Am quite sure if another extreme walk is organised by the same EOs, there will be more than 24 ‘completants’.

Thanks again for the great experience, EOs and all.

  55. All organisers for the event:

Thank you so much for arranging this ramble extreme. It was a first-time experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience although I left after lunch at Turf City.

Thanks to all the guys for their helping hands and everyone for such good company.

    Cheerio till we meet again.

    Gabriella

  56. I’m glad to know that you all have found the trail challenging whether you have completed the whole trail or not. It goes to show that we post 45ers are still a rugged lot in mind, body and spirit.

#70, #73. As I’ve said during the walk, this is a one-off event. However that does not stop any of you from being the EO for Pipeline Ramble X-treme Redux.

For those who took photographs please send them to Oi Cheng for uploading, especially for the second half. Veronique was assigned to be the photographer with my camera which she undertook with much enthusiasm so much so that by lunch time my camera battery was flat!

#76. We have photographic proof taken near the end by James. Wait for the photographs and the certificate presentation which I believe will be organised by Christina.

  57. Glad that the website is back to normal now …. was a blank page when tried logging-in last two days.

Anyway, just want to echo our THANKS AGAIN to the EOs for the gre8 walk. Legs were a bit stiff the next day ….. was surprised that they did not ache as much as I thot they would …. guess the sleep, the bananas, the 100+, the raise-legs and a lot of H2O did the trick.

THANKS EVERYONE! for the great company! It really makes this walk worth every oz of sweat (or blood for some??) dripped ….

    Ivan

  58. Dear All,

It was a great outing, i enjoyed the entire event very much, THANK YOU EVERYBODY…. esp Conrad for taking care of the slower participants; Ivan for the bunches of bananas; the helping hands of Henry & Azhari, Veronique’s forever cheerfulness… and Jeffrey of course…..

#76, incase the photos can’t tell you all, the 12 finishers are:
CharlesC, Azhari, SK, Rene, Ivan, Kristin, Veronique, WeeChin, SallyL, Conrad, Jeff & me :-)
+ HenryY who’d almost completed despite his earlier plan to leave at Turf City.

    Cheers,
    JoyceT

  59. Dear Guys & Gals,

I would like to say a big thank you to all who had lent me a helping hand during the difficult part of the Pipeline Ramble walk especially to Azhari who lent me his support staff. It really make my walking easier. My legs were very tired and I almost fell down a few times. I am glad to have completed part of the walk and joined the group for lunch at Turf City. I want to apologise to Rene for grabbing her hand and nearly making her fall as she extended a helping hand to pull me up a narrow slope. Ivan Lim, Andrew Thio, Conrad Tang – You guys are really galiant and truly gentlemen for helping me to climb over obstacles like fences, etc and for accompanying me though I was so slow and always the last one behind.

Overall, I enjoyed the walk which was something different and I feel refreshed the next day.

Thanks Joyce and Jeffrey for organising the walk.

    Cheers

    Bernie

  60. All Organisers for this fantastic event

I really enjoyed this walk and meet many warm and friendly members.
Look forward to more rustic walk.
Hi Joyce & Jeffrey, thank you for taking your time to organise.
Congrate to the Dirty Dozen + 1 who make it to the end of the walk.

    Cheers
    Lai Fong

  61. Kudos to Jeffrey & Joyce for leading the Pipeline Ramble X-treme!
It is fated that I finally met up with the group despite the fact that I lost my way and had to wiggle myself out of Woodlands immigration! No regrets although I did not complete the walk! You guys and gals are such a great bunch of people – welcoming (Lilian Teo & Veronique Lee); so encouraging (perking me up to continue the walk when I wanted to stop earlier), helpful (with the loan of the trekking stick, a supporting hand while walking on the pipeline, offer of a branch walking stick, holding my hands up and down slopes, etc.), friendly (Ah Nee – our common interest, dancing). Hey lady who showed me the breadfruit tree, I don’t know your name… I want to share with you this info that the fruit of the breadfruit tree is useful as food and medicine. Check out this link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breadfruit
    Thanks for the experience!

  62. Some readers might want to know more details about the grrrrreat ramble, so…

    The trail was long for the tenderfoots;
    Not long enough for the experienced and the hardy;
And a cakewalk for the harriers,
But lo! All were silverheads, young and healthy!

    There was a road to cross, but unending seemed the traffic;
Some silverheads baulked and felt at a loss.
Suddenly Rambo raised his hand – the traffic he stopped!
Relieved, all silverheads scampered safely across.

And as the bewildered motorists gaped,
Over the waist-high roadside fence, the ramblers scaled,
And clambered up a steep slope, wild with undergrowth.
With help from strong hands, not one silverhead failed.

    Onward the congenial troop trudged,
Passing breadfruit trees all with fruit heavy,
And saw tall African Tulip trees in full bloom,
    Flaming in their finest glory.

The trail led to a mean-looking corner,
    Just outside a wire-mesh fencing.
With a narrow ledge over a yawning chasm,
And a two-metre drop, the novices were not laughing!

Legs stretching, hands grabbing, a foothold searching,
But all in vain. What to do?
    Then Rambo to the rescue came again;
His help saw the nervous duo through.

Where the grass was short and patchy,
There grew a-plenty, mimosa creepers and their pinkies, Basking in the sun – those sweet little pink woolly balls, Truly, nature’s unsung beauties.

    The huge water pipes loomed, each ten plus metres long;
Painted a creamy white, their surface looked slippery.
The nimble walked the length of the surface without fuss,
But one tenderfoot saw a world creamy white and shaky!

Voices behind were urging “Look straight, look straight”.
Pausing, the tenderfoot looked ahead –
Colours returned; so did gravity, and step by step,
The greenhorn got to the end by voices led!

Meanwhile some silverheads gave the pipes a miss,
Choosing to walk along a fencing on the ground.
And stepped they into a muddy patch!
Their shoes and socks at once became a mucky brown!

Three hours of gruelling tramping, with one hour more to go,
Three tenderfoots decided to call it a day.
Wishing the fitter ones good luck, off the trail they got,
And to a coffee shop slowly made their way.

    Rambling on a fine morning,
    A heady experience for the first timers;
Getting close to nature, seeing, smelling…
    Rejuvenating, all the encounters! :)

Thank you JoyceT and JeffL for sharing your passion. TQ guys for your chivalry. TQ ladies for mutual care and concern. :)

    Cheers,

  63. #79 thanks Jeff, will look into the certificates,,, later. Please give me some time.

I have not viewed the photos; busy busy at work rushing to meet datelines!

A Hip Hip Hurrah! to all participants!
We, the walk team rejoice with your achievement!

    Thank you,
    ChristinaCL Chan

  64. hi Jassmine the poet,
I love your poem. I really could connect with everything you wrote. It is like re-living the experience again, a valuable story. So lively and colourful especially when you describe nature…about the Breadfruit tree, African tulip and mimosa…You must be the lady who asked me whether the fruit looks like bread when cut open…and so the name…
Hope to meet you again soon.

  65. Hi Henry, CharlesW, Mary-E,

So glad that you all enjoyed the poem. :)

Henry, tks for sharing that the titu jing (spider spirit), lived in the mimosa. You must be steep in Chinese mythology.

Mary-E, shall we go and harvest the breadfruit (so plentiful and…free?)now that we know it’s edible? Actually, Azhari already told me quite a lot about the breadfruit, even how to cook it! Tks, Azhari.

    Hope to meet again…Cheers! :)

  66. Thanks to all participants (especially the EOs Jeffrey & Joyce) of the X-treme Ramble which made my 1st outing with SHC an enjoyable & memorable occasion. Sorry for having to rush off b4 dinner.
Let’s all congratulate ourselves as each one pushed him/her self to the limit. It wasn’t a “walk in the park”!!

    Cheers
    Azhari

  67. Jassmine #86
Nice poem but now I have a problem putting a face to your name … can’t ID u leh!
    Laifong #93,
Ya lor! the breadfruit taste a bit like yam goreng pisang after deep fried. But the one that was “picked” at during the walk was quite small. Had seen much bigger ones there…
    Cheers!
    Ivan

  68. Jass@92..
Im curious..what is this breadfruit?..was searching at LaiFong’s photos…takda le?
If u going to harvest..let me know..I also want le..hehe

    Ivan@94..
U dont know Jassmine?..alamak, she’s my golf buddy la..if u see her again..u will remember, cos we usually know a person by sight..but donno their names!..talking about me la!haha

    Azhari..
Sori,i donno you but may i ask..is this breadfruit called ‘buah sukun’ in Malay?…wild guess

    Henry Yip@88..
So u going to Abel’s trip to find for wolf?..haha
so funny when AhNee told me about the story,u searching for wolf & not the fox?..apa macam?..:)

  69. Ivan..
I read your comments..its in moderation mode?..donno why ah?..strange kena ‘scan’!
but thanks so much for the link..its really called ‘buah sukun’ in Malay..we have a big tall tree during my childhood at our kampong…alamak i dinno its called breadfruit..v suaku!..hehe

  70. Wow, so much information about the breadfruit. I first came across it in the novel ‘Shogun’ where it was described as being popularized by the Portuguese in the 18th century during their search for a sea trade route with the East. I have been wondering how it look like ever since. So we live and learn as we walk.

  71. Hello Lai Fong @# 93

Glad you liked the poem. I remember a lady taking photos besides the ‘official’ photographers, but didn’t have a clear look, so unable to recall how you look. Nm, will check photos when they are ready.

Abt the breadfruit, looks look the most popular way to cook it is to deep fry it…breadfruit fritters…yummy!

  72. Hi Ivan @# 95,
I think we all look without seeing when there’s a crowd. ok, next time we meet, I’ll introduce myself :)

btw, do u know how to get to the spot where the breadfruit trees grow so fruitfully? Feel like going there again to check the fruit. If they’re ripe, take some home, :) otherwise they’ll just drop and rot on the ground. Hmm..

  73. Hi Jassmine@100 & 101
    Hi Jassmine

Go to laifong@91, the group photo on page 2, the lady at left corner squatting down hold a red bag la, that is me lor.

There a some breadfruit trees near my flat in Seng Kang, the fruits about to mature, all go hilang…sigh

BTW how do u look like?

    Cheers
    Lai Fong

  74. Hi Norlinda at #96

    quote” Henry Yip@88..
So u going to Abel’s trip to find for wolf?..haha
so funny when AhNee told me about the story,u searching for wolf & not the fox?..apa macam?..:)”

This quotation completely baffles me, I hv not spoken to AhNee about any wolf or fox, soory sister norlinda, wrong nombor lah. I had good lunch today lah!!

  75. Hi Lai Fong @# 102,
Looking at your photos of the group, I vaguely recalled seeing you. On your pipeline photos, one person is wearing a light maroon polo T, and wearing a blackish hat. That’s me.

Not only the breadfruit hilang before they ripen, all edible fruits suffer the same fate when they grow near people!

    cheers,

  76. Henry@103

Aiyo..either you sudah lupa..or ahnee must be dreaming about you being chased by the big bad wolf during the long x-treme walk!..haha
If u still curious..I’ll tell you at TanjongBatu ok :)

    Ahnee…correct or not u tell me stories?..i laughed until pengsan/teared & he said i salah number?..apa macam la..hehe :)

  77. Hi Norlinda #106
Just so happened when I was reading your post to me, my good frd also passed by my computer and read it as well.

He asked me if I hv met U or know U, I answer no – neither. and he said for someone who have not met me or know me, your post to me looks interesting to him. Frankly I dont know what he meant ( he also read yr previous post to me).

Frankly Norlinda I also dont understand at all what your posts directed to me are trying to say ( so chim ). I also dont understand why my frd say your posts are very interesting. I guess it takes a chim person to understand another chim person.

All I can say is that I think it’s only fair that I inform you that I’m under instructions from my lawyer friend to forward any post you have directed to me and any other post you direct to others in reference to me.

Anyway I really dont know what’s happening, being squeezed between both of you. One I dont know anything about at all, The other one I know for 30 years.

  78. Hi JoyceT, CharlesW,

I had picked two pictures of the walk, for use in our web banner. I think both you and CharlesW stand out well, leading the walkers.

The walkers in the second picture, on the right, looked rather unusual. They appeared to be either dancing, doing some form of balancing exercise or they saw some ants. I like the activity picture, can you share what the walkers were doing?

    Terence Seah

  79. Terence,
The walkers in the second banner picture were not dancing, entertaining themselves with some balancing acts nor escaping from ants. They had encountered the dreaded mud field! Bernie, the lady with the blue jeans, decided to make a U-turn and went backwards and walk on the water pipes over the mudfields. The rest of the walkers in the picture decided to brave it out but to their utter horror their feet and shoes sank deeper with each step. You can guess the rest.

  80. Charles W….my judgment was wrong, regretted for not walking on the huge water pipe. It’s terrible & painful (hehehe…) to see my clean & nice pair of shoe literally soaked in the brown muddy water. Yak….I throwed away my shoe when I reached home, because it’s impossible to wash and get back to original….sigh sigh…..

    Now Terence can LOL….hahaha…..

    Ah Nee

  81. Hi Terence,
The walk was lead by Jeffrey, am glad being part of the team there who’d enjoyed every moment of it.
Just to correct CharlesW #109, the lady with blue jeans is SK.
    Cheers,
    JoyceT

  82. “……..the mudfields…….the walkers……decided to brave it out but to their utter horror their feet and shoes sank deeper with each step. You can guess the rest.”

Nah, Charles-W, nobody can guess what happened next.

These walkers sank deeper and deeper into the mud, deep into the ground, down 18 storeys below, crossed ???, ?????????????? Iceland ?????airports closed, aeroplanes grounded, travellers stranded and Interpol had to work overtime to locate where they are.

  83. Hi walkers,

In the above banner picture, there are two persons whom I have not met or may have forgetten their names. If you know their names, please let me know. Thank you.

    Terence Seah
