Calling all with unusual hobbies and collections

Silver Lining is a bi-monthly magazine that caters largely to readers aged above 45. One of the regular articles
it features are on people with unusual hobbies or collections. The current issue (Apriil – May 2010) features a quirky old SHC geezer who does origami with one hand, and his collection of more than 500 origami books from all corners of the world.

The magazine is looking for more folks with other unusual hobbies or collections to be featured in forthcoming issues. If you have an unusual hobby or collections or know of someone who has, they would love to hear from you.

I have agreed to be Silver Lining’s unpaid contact person for this purpose. To address possible concerns, this message was posted after obtaining prior clearence from Terence.

Best regards,

  1. Hi Ron Koh,

Good to hear you are featured in the current Silver Lining issue. You certainly should be known by all Singaporeans who are keen on origami. You are certainly one the outstanding world origamist with the number of outstanding creations that you have designed.

Do join us this coming May potluck and to show us the article on you and some of your creations. Hope the feature on you will pave the silver lining to your future endeavours.

Will look for the Silver Lining article on you.

    Cheers

  2. Hi RonK,

Thank you for being a good example for other SilverHairs to adopt. We look forward to reading this article about your origami skills. I hope more SHCians will then come forward to share their skills and knowledge, making interesting topics for the media to pick up.

And to all fellow members, you might like to know that newspapers, radio and TV as well as magazines are very keen to know what SilverHairs are doing. Dont be shy, identify yourself.

  3. Hi Ron

As expressed previously, I have had great interest in origami 20 years ago but did not pursue it (now, I regret a bit la). Nonetheless, with your help, I hope that I can pick it up again. when you are ready to conduct a class, I will certainly try to make it. Of course, cannot be during work hours hor. Hope you can hold it on a Saturday if possible. If not, never mind la, my loss.

Oh pray tell, how do we get our hands on this magazine ?

    Cheers and take care.

  4. Hi, Terence #2:

I am flattered indeed. I haven’t done anything to merit being an example for anyone to emulate, except continue pursuing something that has been a lifelong passion.

However, I join you in repeating the call for those with unusual hobbies or collectioons to share their interests as this would be a good way to generate some positive publicity for SHC.

So far, there has been no response to my original post, and I can’t imagine that there is no one else among our ranks with some unusual but fascinating hobby or collect unusual stuff.

Perhaps there some of you be unsure if what you are doing fits the bill, and do not want to seem too forward by responding openly. If so, you may respond to me in private and in at ronald.origami@gmail.com.

Thanks for your kind comments. I may be no stranger to the international origami community, but certainly not an ‘outstanding world origamist’. :o)

I had intentions of joining the monthly gathering (after a lapse of some 18 months) in May of June. However and as you know, I am still recovering and not yet very mobile. I am likely to have to give the planned gathering at East Coast Park a miss as it would seem require quite a bit of walking on soft and uneven ground. It would also not be possible for me to hand carry my contributions towards the pot-luck, let alone bring origami stuff to show.

I guess it would be more appropriate for me to make a return at a subsequent gathering.

    Cheers,

    RonK

  5. Hi, Maggie #3:

It may be quite sometime before I am able to recover sufficiently to be in a position to conduct classes. We do have an origami group in Singapore that you or anybody else who is interested can join. The group meets once a month for informal folding sessions and a chat. I am no longer a member of this group for personal reasons, but most of the members are old friends of mine. Please contact me via private email if you are interested.

Silver Lining is available at Books Kinokuniya and Borders (at both the Orchard and Parkway Branches). Just ask the sales assistants if you can’t find it on the shelves. And incidentally, if you or anyone else happens to go to Gleneagles, they do carry copies in the waiting areas.
