Blue Helmet

This year, we will start moving ahead with Blue Helmet.  Blue Helmet aims to establish SilverHairsClub as a group of experienced people, over 45, who have either retired or not working fulltime.

  • Blue Helmet’s objective is to provide opportunities for retired SilverHairs who would like to continue working, full-time, part-time or contract, locally or overseas, after their full time employment.
  • Blue Helmet’s core focus would be companies and organisations which place top priorities and emphasis on skills, experience and knowledge, over youth, low salaries and outsourcing advantages.

We will start slow, and build Blue Helmet into a common name, where companies and organisations can find experienced personnel to kickstart new projects, new businesses and train new employees.  Bue Helmet offers companies the opportunity to benefit from retired SilverHairs who have built years of experience and knowledge.

Opportunities will be entered into the Blue Helmet page for SilverHairs to view from time to time.

SilverHairsClub members with contacts for overseas assignments, new projects, start-up companies, training and educational positions can enter the opportunities as a comment.  As a rule, these opportunities should be in line with the skills, experience and knowledge, acquired by the individual over many years.

Strict rules of the club will continue to apply.  Blue Helmet – strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.

I think that your idea is a good one as many retirees still want to contribute but perhaps taking it more lightly now.Presently I’m in Perth but will be in Singapore in July.

In response to what you have written, I’m thinking of doing something in Singapore related to getting resource people to teach lifeskills and hobbies. If there are members who would like to offer their services, either paid or voluntary, you can email me. I will reply to them personally and perhaps meet up when I’m in Singapore. Blue Helmet can then be an avenue to provide work opportunities.

Since returning to Perth and meeting some of the members, I would like to explore the idea of acting as a contact person for members who wish to visit and stay a while in Perth, perhaps to experience a different lifestyle here.

The things I can assist will to source out families who may want to offer B & B accomodation and also in transport arrangements. The accomodation cost may vary depending on the family and location.

  2. Hi Terence

With regards to what I’m thinking of doing in Singapore, I would like to share my thoughts. I’m interested running a centre which caters for the learning of lifeskills and to provide for recreational activities for the whole family, for the young and old.

The centre will have a programme of activities like remedial learning for weak pupils especially in EL and Maths, parenting talks, work skills etc as well as art and craft,IT, cookery lessons etc for leisure.

As my background is in education, I always regard education and lifelong learning as having a vital role in our lives. Pupils that need tuition or remediation are really the very weak ones and may need an ongoing programme to help them. I’m wondering if volunteers or teachers can work with them to overcome their weak areas. This may take a longer time frame than that provided by most tuition centres. The key point is to help them to learn and achieve.

The other area is leisure and new skills learning for social interaction, relaxation etc. This is where resource people who wish to share their passion or interest with others eg in craft, cooking, dance etc.

I may need a place large enough to run these activities – something like a mini-YMCA, at least -5 rooms. To sustain the programme and pay resource people who are not volunteers, fees have to be charged. However, profit-making is not the main point.

I welcome comments and suggestions to my thoughts.

    Regards
    Joan

  3. Dear Joan,

I am new to SHC. I just read your latest note on this lifeskills project. This activities project of yours requires space…if you are talking about 5 rooms (class rooms?, I presummed) rental will cost lots here in Singapore. Therefore, it will be cost effective and wise if you could find an existing institution to team up with to make this work. Sorry, just “kay poh”.

    Regards,

  4. Hi Edwin
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I tried toying with the idea of running activities at various venues eg homes of trainers etc but needs a lot of coordination as compared to a central place. True, rental will cost unless it’s at a rental place eg HDB void deck/ big house with low rental but well located. With these issues, I’m thinking of shelving the business idea.
