Used PCs for SHC members Project

This is one of my favourite past times. I have been doing this since late 90’s on both personal and corporate basis.

I had personally encountered many elders like myself who have been deprived of owning a decent PC (at times even none) or rights to use one. They would also not foot out the money to get for themselves. Many a reason being that they afraid that they might offend or receive severe criticism from their children or friends.

I m just fortunate to have own not only one but three (a lappy and 2 PCs) numbers solely. My other family members have their own.

I believe its high time that I should push for such cause. Together with interested members here, we can help bring our non-IT savvy (dont know) members to the minimum level and not left behind in the digital divide.  Many may still not choose to pursuit but decisions are theirs.

Since all information about what’s happening in SHC is web-based, it would be good if members keep themselves updated by surfing the SHC’s homepage.  Being IT-savvy, it will give you an edge over getting information faster and better than those who are not. On the other hand, people cant take you as "handicapped".

So much for the blah blah blah. Let me take lead in what we can do with your help. We can go on a 2-prone direction by providing 1) hardware (PCs) and 2) software (home guided learning).

The Task –

1. Get members to donate their unwanted PCs.

2  Match and identify members (those who are not doing well or receiving no income and dont own any) who want to own the PCs.

3. Get members who wish or would like to provide home guided learning.

4. Match and identify members who need home guided learning.

5. Get members to form core group to refurbish the donated PCs at donors’ premises or otherwise.

Nothing is called achievement until the time you bring back the life of a machine that has reached its "EOL" (end of life).

Should we do not not to do, your responses are very important.

  1. Yew Kwong and myself have discussed this project on a number of occasions. I fully support activities that help SilverHairs enhance their IT knowledge.

Yew Kwong is right. As we get older and less mobile, a good knowledge of IT and internet will make our lives easier.

  2. I fully support this project which my husband and I did from 2000 to 2002 for Singaporeans, Sri Lankans and Burmamese.

We collected or bought old PCs from the companies who just completed their technology upgrade and then we loaded the software relevant to a common operating environment.

I can help to source the used PCs from my friends in Singapore for this project.

  3. If U look at ourself and think U are useless and hopeless in learning IT, pls rethink. No one is even when U reach the “ripe” age.

I strongly believe U just need to take away the “fear” factor and U are ready to start your learning journey.

At our age, we are no better than the youngs who are fast and good. Still, its always late than never. Once you can do it, you will want to pat yourself with both hands and solemly declared, “I have achieve it. Its just no big deal”.

  4. Hi,

I fully support Yew Kwong’s project and it activities. In fact, I have been providing some IT services on computer hardware and software to some of our SHC members.

Yew Kwong! I am with you.

    Cheers,
    Ronald Lee

  5. I’ll hold Terence, Mary and Ronald’s hands and together as the fearsome foursome, provide total support to Yew Kwong. But since I am computer-blur, sorie if my support is limited to carrying & doing the home delivery of PCs for you.

  11. Hi Yew Kwong, we’re abt 2 days away from the macdonald date so can i assume that, like yr cycling slogan, rain or shine, you’ll be there?

If only 2 of us can make it this time, maybe you can bring some chests -english, chinese whatever – to play? Or we can walk via the pie, cte, out into bt merah, turn left to commonewealth ave to join our walkists at ghim moh? Die die what you do i do even if it’s to say i do to those who cannot do.

  12. hi yew kwong,
are you still collecting old PCs? I have a laptop to donate. actually it was meant for a nun who’s posted to africa. she was suppose to stop over in s’pore but apparently there was a change of plans due to the air-fare budget.
so instead of having it lying around and turn obsolete, I rather put it in good hands.

it is an old acer travelmate 211T. if you are interested, juz let me know.

    cheers
