Joyce Tan – Profile

Greetings…

I am Joyce, a commoner. Born in an attap kampong hut 50 years ago. Single parent with 2 grown up children. Used to practice Yoga but stop 10 years ago upon doctor’s advice after my neck injury. Not good in talking, feels more comfortable participating in physical exercise.

Begin to feel the ‘Empty Nest’ now. A nature lover, I missed those days when I sneaked out in an adult’s bicycle at the age of six, roaming alone in the greeneries of the kampong, racing with dragon fly and butterfly, and waddling thru rising water with sea creatures, like sea snakes; crabs; shrimps and plenty of fishes, to reach home during the 3rd & 18th day of the (chinese) month (due to high tide)…..

As I’m working full time and due to my age, not sure if my muscles still can support me in activities like long distance cycling & hiking etc.  Hope to be able to join you guys in some activities some day when the timing match.

Cheers to all active SH

  1. Hi Joyce, we welcome you to our fold of silverhaired commoners.

Some of us are good in talking, some are not so good in talking but very good at whistling. Whenever we get to meet up at events, we all become good at everything. So relax and hv no worry.

Indeed, the feel of ‘Empty Nest’, emptiness and loneliness plague most of us in our post-prime years. It’s precisely for this reason SHC wants to give ourselves a 2nd chance to be hip & active again.

You have great company if you still chase after dragonflies altho it’ll be some kind of formalised quick-steps. It’s unlikely that you’ll find sea snakes; crabs, shrimps and fish here altho occasionally you might get to see buayas sun-tanning.

There’s no telling whether yr muscles still can support you in activities until you give them a chance so come join our various activities like discussions on retirement issues for the serious, walking/cycling for those who love a bit of nature and disco for those who still get the wow and wolf howls.

  2. Hi Joyce

Welcome aboard SHC. Do come and join us cycling every 3rd week of the month and also other social activities.

Log onto this website more often and I am sure you will be able to find some activities that would interest you. :)

    Cheers,
    Susan

  3. Hello Joyce,
sounds like you’re descendent from some royalty when u said u r a ‘commoner’.
your past-times bring back some nostalgia for me abt cycling an adult bicycle. my first adult bicycle was a lady one and i just ‘stand’ up cycling since too short to sit. fell many times and still have scars all over my knees. yes, catching drain fish, spiders were exciting activities then.
although i have some arthritis, i try to push myself to be active and do some walking, jogging, fishing. i think u shd have no problem since u r younger than me. hope to meet up soon.
    cheers! Henry

  4. Joyce,

Do you still remember your kampong days? Can you tell us more about it and where you are familiar with?

I would luv to see more kampong outings.

  5. Hi Tim, Thanks for your encouragement. I do line dancing once a while n am practicing tai ji at the moment. Perhaps can join Susan in their mthly cyling session… 3rd week of the month right?

Henry, my late grandpa fleed china during cultural revolution early 20century. He brought with him some valuables which allowed him to invest in a fleet of vehicles when he migrated to ‘Nanyang’, from indonesia to malaysia and finally decided to settle down in this tiny island. I don’t know the exact background/ status he was, what i know is he is well studied (of chinese confucion), good at chinese medicine (treated some unusual problem) and found peace in his traditional taoist/buddhism.

Terence, the kampong i used to live has long been replaced by industrial estate. I can only imaging the lightless track leading home from the main road with sleeping python lying around when i’m out at night but hardly find any stars nowaday.

Pulau Ubin is one place i luv to visit and sungei Buloh is where i can still find some familiarity. Kelong off pengarang can give u a bit of excitment and taman negara is where i feel closer to the nature.

Except been to the majestic eastern turkey and some other places, I don’t really travel alot.
I dream of joining a group of nature lover for hiking somewhere… and thought cycling across the causeway sound pretty interesting but, but where do i start? Don’t think it’s safe to pratice cycling regulary in this cycle unfriendly city – i don’t have any vehicle.

  6. Yes, Joyce, cycling is normally held in the 3rd week (Saturday) altho you’ll hv more than Susan to cycle with….Yew Kwong, Andrew, Ronald all can do stunning stunts on the barking bikes.

Taking a leaf of history……..the generalsimo fled to farmosa and established his exiled govt there when mao marched into beijing with the reds. Frightened, many of our fathers/grandpas left for nanyang. Some made good. More went kaput but invariably they all revered Confucius but shake (sic) their heads & beards when asked who shakespeare was.

Well, majority of 2day’s young probably know little of either but cd quickly tell you the vital stats of big s, small ass and which celebrity is having an affair with an elephant.
