Idea on our Website

Reading the SHC website has become one of my daily habit. During the reading, I consider our website lack of two kindof postings.

  1. Durable posting except the personal profile
  2. Knowledgeable posting

Some friends told me that, now SHC has 3000 plus members and will become 10000 in the near future. All of us are over 45, and been involved in all kind of businesses, there should be a tremendous knowledge base inside our SHC, but seems that no one try to utilize it.

Use two scenarios to illustrate this problem

1.      When member A faced some problem, he does not have a channel to ask for help (advices) from our SHC. For example, if I have friends from Hong Kong, and I don’t know where to take them to visit and eat, how can I ask for advices from SHC, Of course, my one is trivial, there should be unlimited problems outside waiting for advices.

2.      When member B wants to share some of his knowledge, there is also no channel for him to do so. For example, Richard Lee shared his view on the CPF special account interest rate in the May gathering – retirement issues. If no this gathering, even Lee like to share also cannot.

So, I would like to propose SHC create a platform for members to seek help and for members to share what they want to share. Our website should be the best choice for this platform.

As time goes by, this will form a large knowledge database of our SHC. The information inside the database, after interpret, discuss, update will be more live, accurate, and useful. It will be a precious property of our SHC

The above humble idea suddenly comes to my mind. Write it down for consideration. Thanks.

  1. Andrew and YK,

Excellent idea. Thank you for bringing this topic up. You have raised an issue, which many others have been waiting to ask.

Many of us have done well with sharing their comments on this website. Therefore, if someone starts a POST, comments and ideas usually follow well.

The SHC website is for all SilverHairs. Feel free. The way to do it is to write a new POST.

    a. If you want to start a Char Kuay Teow food stall, and are looking for a stall in Toa Payoh, go ahead, find receipes, find partners, get ideas, find locations, need food-tasters, you have to open up, pick up the courage to write a Post.

    b. If you disagree with putting money in the Special Account CPF 4.5% interest, and like to explain why, write a new Post. Feel free to use this forum.

    c. If you have been feeling sad that your dog is lonely, and needs another dog friend, this is a great forum. I am sure Steven Chan can help, as he is a great dog lover.

    d. If you have been buying a bottle of Korean Red Ginseng every month for $100, and know that if you buy in packs of 4, it costs $80, go ahead and use this open forum to find other SHC members who loves Ginseng.

    e. If you suddenly feel your joints are feeling strange, and want to know what other SilverHairs are feeling, go ahead and ask on this forum. Write a new Post. You may fnd that all SilverHairs are beginning to have joint problems.

    f. So, feel free to share, ask and comment. Finding friends for beer, sharing your investment plans, finding a Bintan travel partner, looking for someone to share an afternoon tea? The list is endless. Go ahead everybody.

Note, this website is definitely out-of-bounds to those who wish to discuss politics, religion, sex, race, direct selling and MLM.

  2. Hi Terence

    Thanks for your response.

I want to propose that we should create a new category for these kind of posting, for example: “knowledge base”. These kind of posting different from the existing one is that they are durable. Whenever the SHC members have some problems they feel hard to solve, they can always refer to this category first and look for the topics related to their problems. Then, followed by comments, discussions, etc, the members can get the advices (hopefully) and the topic’ll become more live and valuable. If they cannot locate any related topic, they can create a new post.

  3. Hi Terence

This is my first posting. After I finished the writing, to my surprise, I have no way to post it to our website.

I called Oi Cheng and Yew Kwong, and finally I found that, a button – “Publish” is missing in my posting platform.

Terence, can you solve this problem for me (or others also have the same problem), as I’ve another post want to publish. Thanks

  4. This is no offence to anyone as I do enjoy some chats on posts, but sometimes, the comments get carried away and they become non-related. Unless members can be disciplined and only give relevant comments to a post. You can sometimes sense annoyance in the person who created the post when this happens.

At the same time, we also enjoy reading the daily sparring comments which made us laugh and cheer us up, so how? Is it possible to create a blog/chat site for members to give their comments on any other matters. IT experts, what are your views?

  5. Hi Andrew,

I am going to strike TOTO, lah.
You are dwelling on my idea on knowledge base database, right? I am telling you, Andrew. You are in big trouble. OK.

You have infringed the rights to use my proprietary wording “knowledge database” and “knowledge base”. I think I do have a good case against you where I can collect a good sum for loyalty and goodwill. Do you like to settle it in private? Or you better seek professional advice from your 1000 years old friend, Tim (who charges a modest fee, which we share for this kind of “lo-bang”) to get you out this time. Ha.. Ha.. I be rich.

BTW. Tim! What you say, huh. Good “Lo-bang”, right?

    Cheers,
    Ronald Lee

  6. Hi Andrew,

Every SHC member can post. However, to avoid runnaway posting, the first few posts are not automatically published. Usually, after 3 Posts, the procedure is over-ruled. Meantime, they will be moderated.

No worries, please continue, save it and you have a 99% chance, the post will be up within a day.

  7. Dear Terence,

Many people look into our SHC website. I know because, since I post the Batam thing, I get quite a few mysterious emails and phone calls – rom people who said they check on this website every now and then.

By having advertising links on SHC website, we can generate income for SHC effortlessly. Have discussed with Yew Kwong about this. He is right that we MUST have a counter to show the number of people logging in before any organisation will want to advertise with us.

Seriously Terence, this is a wothy preposition. Please consider.

  8. Also Terence,

You have stipulated a number of “no-nos” to be posted on this website. Must also make sure this website does not become a free avenue for self-promotion/advertising or orbituaries.

Yikes!!! I know I’ll be shot down soon – must take cover quick.!!

  9. It’s said that dogs make the best friends bcos of their absolute & unstinting loyalty.

Andrew has allegedly used yr proprietary “knowledge database” and “knowledge base” and so you want his loyalty and woof woof to you too?

Sure, let that be settled in privacy esp when you said you’re also aiming at “this kind of lo-bang” which I take it as the woof woof kind. Not sure whether, for that, you’ll become rich or be made to stitch up the lobang. Good lo-bang? Heeee, as it pleases you.

Btw, be careful hor. Oi Cheng is getting annoyed liao, has petitioned for a decree to enforce discipline. Likely that she wd be granted an order in terms meaning, another roller pin amazon on the prowl.

  10. Yeap, Terence, totally agreed with Lily/Yew Kwong on this counter thingy – m sure definitely can generate a substantial amt to be used for good cause.

  11. Although there are Categories, the creator of the Post may not have classified it under the respective categories. Also, Search will only search the posts, not the Comments.

Counter? Wonderful. We will all take turns to go in and out of the site many times a day. Actually, looking at the Latest Comments, I think several of us actually do go in and out many times a day…who doesn’t need a break from work huh?

  12. Aiyoh Tim Ah Liu friend. Could it be the phrase “can be disciplined” which didn’t sound so nice be the problem? Would “are disciplined” sound better? Former sounds like getting punished whereas latter meant self-discipline? tio bo? If still salah, then I apologise for the limitation for english words. In fact, after the comment was out, had wanted to do some editing but found that there was no edit mode on my comment so bo bian. Sorry if I upset anyone but certainly that was never my intention.

  13. A married couple in their early 60s were celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary.

Suddenly , a fairy appeared n said “4being so faithful n loving 2each other all this time, I’ll grant u each a wish.”

    D wife said: “Oooh, I want 2travel around d world w/my husband.”

D fairy waves her magic wand n 2 airline tickets appeared in her hands.

Now, it was d husband’s turn.

He thought 4a moment n told his wife’ “Well this is all very romantic but an opportunity like this is too rare.

“No, I’m sorry my love, but I wish 4a wife 30 years younger than me.”

D wife n d fairy were deeply disappointed. But a wish is a wish.

So, d fairy made a circle w/her magic wand n boom!

D husband became 92 years old.

Pls 4give if I hv offended anybody in particular. Since this is Father’s Day a laff wld be good antidote…….

Be careful what u wish 4 tho… Ha ha ha

    Blessed Papa’s Day.

  14. The lady who is wont to tam Cheng shiiit Oi (canto for love smitten), dont worry lah, i know yr hubby, hv complained to him and he’s now shopping for a baseball bat to show who is the boss at home. heeee, ee bai lei chi sei meh?

Seriously, there’s no harm for folks to point out certain discourse which may become a litle out of order.

  15. Have a “What’s New” sort option. See the latest posts first.

Currently, all threads are sorted by date of original post. No option. Old threads with new posts are lost and relegated right to the back somewhere.

  16. KT (is this how we should address you?)

I believe the latest Posts are displayed first. To read the Latest Comments, click on “Latest Comments” at the top right hand corner of the SHC website.

  17. Hi KT,

We are looking at your request. No magic, may take a long time.

First, we started a new feature “Latest Posts” at the top of the website.

Secondly, we created new categories to meet SILVERHAIRSCLUB members needs.”

    Terence Seah
    Have fun.

  18. I can understand why we have a long list of “No’s and Don’t-Do’s”

The downside is that meaningful dialoque can be stifled. Case in point.

Edwin’s thread started to explore the lack of success of the “free” music scene and came quickly into a “No-do” dead end when the issue settled to one of licensing. Whether it can detour and take off in another direction remains to be seen.

  19. Dear Wong Kong Thean,

Ii is quite natural for members to chip in and throw in their tuppence worth of views and comments to the heap. Ultimately, therein we hope lies the hidden treasure but first we have to filter through and work a little to discover this gem.

I am certain that Terence and some others are raring to go further into this “free” music scene. They, perhaps, like myself are also well informed with the paper aspect. Something will have to pop out soon….no fizzling here!

    Regards, God Bless

  20. Hi Lily,

On comment 8, the SHC website carries very good traffic statistics; and this can be seen on the FAQ page.

I personally dont know how to add a counter, but I shall get someone to have a look. Good feedback.

    Terence Seah

  21. Hi Terence

When I post that comment, I was not aware that you have the statistics in hand. And since it can be checked against the FAQ page, I guess that’ll do. In any case, even with the counter, advertisers will still do their own checking to verify whether the count is authentic or not. (Just in case members deliberately login and out 10 times a day to chalk up the count).

  22. The comments in the forum come fast and furious. It would be good if Latest Comments have a Previous Entries option like Latest Posts. Then we can scroll back for the previous comments in blocks of 20.

  23. Hi Natasha
