October Walking Route-Kallang&Marina

Welcome to our October Walk. Team leader for this walk  is SHC Christina Chan.

Date – Saturday 28 Oct 2006,     time- 4.30pm

Meeting Place – Kallang MRT station exit point

Walking Route – Kallang Riverside Park & Marina Promenade

Oct Walk will take us to Kallang Riverside park and Marina Promenade with water view all the way and plenty of trees to provide shade. If we are lucky we may get to view the ‘duck’ (amphibious tourist boat with wheels) at close range coming on shore.

From meeting point,  we take a short 5 mins walk to Kallang River park and continue into Marina Promenade, then walk all the way to the ‘Durian’(Esplanade Theatres). The total walk is about 3 miles and takes about 1hr 15 mins at normal walking speed. We take a 10 mins rest midway.

At our destination there are many food outlets including an open air hawker centre. Marina Bay is a beautiful and interesting place to watch people and sunset.

To go home there is a bus stop at the Durian, alternatively walk to City Hall MRT via underground shopping mall.

  1. Dear All walkers,

During Sep’s walk, found out that for those who are new to walks OR never go for walks :) are not prepared for it. Here are some Basic items – comfortable walking shoes; a bottle of drinking water ideally not more than 1 litre (no extra wt) enough jus to sip along the way; a cap and for those who need more shade a foldable umbrella and perhaps a ‘travel’ raincoat.

How to recognise any of us: look out for “silverhairs”, pple in casual wear n walking shoes…etc, you can’t miss. Just be punctual so we could start at 4.30pm, also if I am not wrong daylight is shorter now towards the end of year. C u guys…..

  2. 45 years ago, walking was a daily exercise routine for most of us, not an option and never was a past-time. Tay Koh Yat, Green Bus, STC etc didnt run their bus services into the corners of kampongs, and so walked we must, often in slippers; sometimes, in China-made canvas shoes (remember the cheap, durable pigeon brand which invariably was passed down in the sibling chain?)

With a first world transportation system, we now have no choice but to make time to walk, and learn to walk. Haha, how time and progress (or is it progress in tis instance?) have changed us !

  3. Dear SHC walkers,

This month’s walking and cycling happens on the same day(28Oct)once again. For those who are interested in both events, please accept our apologies.
For the Walking team lead – the reason is because the team was unavailable on other Saturdays. In order not to disappoint the others regular walkers, we chose to maintain the monthly walk schedule(for fellowship) and on a route we have been to previously because we haven’t time to recce new routes just yet (ps: I just returned from vacation).

For those who are cautious about the haze, it is expected to improve and this route is very easy and we can do it at leisure pace.

The good news is from November onwards, walking shall be fixed on the 2nd Sat of each month (please mark your calendars hahahah), we shall try to maintain this schedule as best as we can.

    Stay cool ;) see u at Kallang&’Durian’

  4. Dear SHC walkers and cyclists

Cycling activity which is fixed on 3rd Sat has changed to 4th Sat of Oct because Deepavali falls on this day.

Please dont worry that you may have miss this activity if you have decided to go for the nature walk, you can always join us in the subsequent Saturdays.

Anyway, let us take this opportunity to wish all members a Very Happy Deevapali and Hari Raya Puasa.
