  1. Hi Roland,

Understand you were/are a pro, i.e. tennis coach. Very kind of you to initiate a tennis group and I look forward to your guidance in improving my tennis.

I will probably join Group 1, subject to your assessment.

Pls let me know details when you firm up.

Thank you and Happy Lunar New Year.

  2. Hi Roland

Want to play at my tennis court which is within 5-minute walk from the Tanah Merah MRT station?

Have not play for almost ten years….. so can pick up again…..

    Cheers, Andrew

  3. Hi Roland

Would like to learn to play Tennis. Tried before but always “pak hong” – hit the air and miss the ball. Very paiseh. So I automatically fall into Group 2.

    Many thanks

    Caroline Gee

  4. Hi Roland

Btw, no court fees, need 7-day bookings to assure court availability. Will try to get both courts if there is demand.

    Evenings prefer

  5. Dear June

I am offering The Tanamera. It is a three- block(in distinct maroon, plural and green) estate, beside the Tanah Merah Interchange station.

If you ride the E-W trains you can view the lovely swimming pool, pond, club house and BBQ pits.

Am letting Roland to decide since he started this thread.

    Cheers, Andrew

  6. Wow! So many responses in such a short time.
    Andrew,
Thanks for the offer which I think we should consider seriously.
If there are better offers we shall also consider them.
I’ve not fixed the place, date and time as I wanted to find out the number of tennis enthusiasts. If the response is good, then we shall decide on the details.Perhaps call for a meeting.

  7. Dear Roland

    Not at all.

My tennis is rusty so is my social golf, if you play this too.

Your call ……..immediately after 4-day CNY.

    Cheers, Andrew

  8. Hello Bro Tong,

Here I come to give you my support, are you happy now? Andrew Kuan’s Tanah Merah court? On! Sign me on for Group 2, please. Thank you!

  9. Gingko,
This is an event that I am giving my Service to SHCians FREE and no one is obligated to give me any support. I am spending time to teach a skill especially to beginners. As I’ve told our President and Tim Liu that ” I shall pass through this world but once. So whatever good that I can do, let me do it now”

  10. Roland @ #16

    Your services are greatly appreciated.

President who? We have only a Mentor Member. Every one else including President, if we had one, is “kiddo”.

Tim, the better man won. It is game and set for Tong. With such a stunning service, you are caught all balls down.

Bravo, keep up the good service.

    hee-hee

  11. Hi Roland,

I have lost touch for a while but would love to start playing tennis again. Prefer to be in group 1.

Btw, can you recommend me some good players staying in Simei area to play intercon for Changi Simei CC this year. Much appreciated.

    Tks
    Molly

  12. “I have never hold (sic) a tennis racket before”. Fear not bcos you’re not alone.

More often, you’ll find women holding tennis’ brother than tennis racquet/ So Rol is giving us, men & women, the chance to hold the racquet first then hold whatever.

    KT, not quite.

With Rol’s service whizzing at 200 kmph, you dont retrieve his shot with a racquet, worse, with yr tennis’ brother. You do the scissors kick like sepak takraw and smashes it all back to him.

For that I dont get a fair-play award but i get to ward off his thunderous service. That you wont hv ghost of a chance to catch my balls coming down is regrettable but will let you hv them somewhere sometime……together with tennis’ brother.

  13. Hi Roland,

I did play some tennis some time ago, so would like to join in the fun too. Will actually join any game, badmintion, cycle/blading/surf/climb/hike/dance/Karaoke, etc if i around.

Cheers to you, Dan Huang,Hamidah, KT Wong and all those who readily volunteer to run such activities/events/meetings etc.

Hopefully SHC will have weekly activities, events and ventures that will one day be as attrative as SGCC, so Terence and others who have settle abroad may decide to spend more time back here.

But for me, just want to be kept busy, have a good work out, physically, mentally, emotionally and socially too.

Someone just mailed us a good advice “You stop growing when you stopped trying and learning and trying to improve whatever you want to do. ”

    Cheers
    Allrounder

  14. Hi Bro Roland,

Have not play for years since I left school.
Should I join Group 1 for refresher course then upgrade to Group 2 subject to your early assessment?
I want to improve my skills under your guidance.

    Thanks for volunteering your service.

    Rene

  15. Hi Renee,

Group 1 is for ppl who can play and gp 2 for those who cant play. One starts from gp 2 then upgrade to gp 1 not the other way round. Which way you want hah.

  16. helo Roland

I also wanna play pls.Dont want to be left out!
Hv played in my teen days..but so long never play..so better be in group1,if not so malu, hehe.Donno can backstroke or not, but im game for fun.Hopefully hv lessons on weekdays, tku

Ya lah Rene…u apa macam? Molly is a pro, so cannot ‘bedek’ her ok haha

  17. Interesting.

Now that there’s a chance of watching “backstroke” on the tennis court, guys, do come in yr swimming trunks. No, this isnt a backhand hint, it’s said with a straight face..

  18. Hello kawan Nor Indah,

We are talking about tennis lah, not body massage or swimming lah , got ‘backstroke ?’. But anyway the idea is still the same , for fun and exercise , to loosen up all the muscles in the body and also face lah.

    Cheers

  19. All Tennis Enthusiasts(or “Tennis Kakis”)
I am trying to get Andrew Kuan to book Saturday, 1st March 2008 6.00pm- 8.00pm for our 1st meeting at the Tanah Merah Condo Tennis Court. You will be divided into “Beginners” and “Intermediate” Groups. Perhaps from there we can discuss the appropriate day and time for future sessions.

  20. Hi Roland,
backstroke or backhand arnt they the same?aiya nvm lah, when a pro teach then i will learn the correct term.
RonaldWie..body massage & swimming are different strokes lah..u dont be naughty!

  21. Hi Roland. Timing 6 to 8 pm is perfect. Saturday is perfect too. But how do I get to Tanah Merah Condo?…Near any MRT station? I live in the north, Sembawang :-)))

  22. Dear Roland

Will try to book 2 courts from 7-9pm on Fiday, 1 March 2008. There is a-week booking stipulation. Will advise confirmation, one week before 1 March.

The Tanamera condo is five-minute walk from the Tanah Merah (TM) MRT station. It is a three-block estate in distint maroon, purple and green.

One can see the estate when travelling along the E-W MRT route between Bedok and TM stations.

  23. Aiyoyo, why am I so ‘sotong’ after few days of rush hours assignments “buay kow koon” lah.

    Molly, thanks for highlighting hor

Nor, you also “blur” lah…cannot blame lor. Very contagious, you are nearest to me. heehee!

  24. Reminder to all Tennis Enthusiasts:
1.Though the tennis courts are free (Courtesy of Andrew Kuan), we still have to pay for the tennis balls.
2.Please bring your own tennis rackets. Those who do not have tennis rackets and do not wish to purchase new ones, I can look for some second-hand ones from the tennis shops.A new tennis racket may cost around $200/ but a second-hand one would cost around $50-$80

  25. Dear Roland

Not at all, it was my early mistake at #34, was thinking of another event that falls on 1 Feb, Friday.

    So rectified at #35 : Sat, 1 Mar 08.

    Blessed Prosperous & Happy CNY

    Cheers, Andrew

  26. Hi Roland

I would like to be present for the first lesson ( in group 2). Regarding the footwear – what are ‘marking shoes’?

    Appreciate your FOC coaching.

    JassmineT

  27. Hi! Jasmine,
“marking shoes” are shoes that cause marks to be formed on the surface of the tennis court because they are NOT tennis shoes such as leather shoes, jogging shoes, walking shoes, etc.
Those who are not serious about tennis can get second-hand tennis rackets. It is Not advisable to borrow tennis rackets as they are expensive and if you break them accidentally or cause a crack, they are of no use to the owner any longer.

  28. Hi Jasmine

If time permits, maybe like to try out your rendition.

“Perish in the name of LOVE” (English version) earlier before tennis game/lesson at 6pm. Say 5pm ? I will introduce to you my Lady also.

    Cheers, Andrew

  29. Hi AndrewK

‘My rendition’ is copycat version from Youtube

I’m able to sing only the first part of “Never Say Goodbye” (after listening to it for over a week – very slow learner!)

Now am trying to familiarise myself with the rest of the melody. It’s tough! Don’t know whether can get the hang of it by D-Day (1/3). Anyway will sing the first part for your assessment, so will go to your condo at 5p.m. on 1/3.

    Now I’d better start drinking ‘yan4 wo1’

    JassmineT

    Anyway will meet your ‘

  30. Dear Jasmine

Be encouraged ……..copy the lyrics and read through several times first.

Please make sure you have every word pronounce correctly.

Listen to the complete opera ballad that Suzzane and her Consort sing for a few times. Familiar with the rhythm.

Sing in part and go through each part a couple of times….move on when you progress/feel confident, step by step. When you have finished the whole song, you will feel a great sense of achievement…..bravo!

Come over at 5:00pm earlier, if you want to listen to the traditional short form first to get you warm up.

    Cheers, Andrew

    Hi Ronald,

    re #53

My tennis is not good. Saying to you folks that tennis was my preferred game was actually a “smoke” excuse to cover up for my lousy badminton. Now you will know I am bad in both.

Missed you at badminton couple of Sundays ago. Understand you were overseas. Yah, will play badminton too, if Dan decides to continue organising it.

See u 1/3, if not sooner (maybe at badminton, if there is any session the next couple of Sundays.)

Wishing you a Happy n Properous Lunar New Year. Cheers.

  44. Norlinda,
We shall discuss the permanent day for our tennis when we meet on 1st March. I’ve to cater to the majority provided it does not clash with my work schedule. At the moment I’m free only on Monday and Friday Nights.
    Hock Lye,
    Welcome to the Tennis Fraternity!

  45. Hi Andrew,

Will be there to swim and gym on 1 March. Thank you for your time and effort.

  47. Dear Sarah

Noted, Roland is the chief in this event.

    See you.

Dear Roland: Due to overwhelming response, I will assist in the three activities co-ordination, unlikely to play that day.

Will oonfirm court booking on 23 Feb, one week notice.

    Cheers, Andrew

  48. Caroline, Dolly,Jeffrey
Am very sorry that the three of you can’t make it. Dolly, if tennis racket is a temporary problem, it can be solved. Don’t let this small problem deter you.
    Roland

  49. Lina,
Don’t get worried about injuring your ankle. You are such a great sportswoman and you should not worry about spraining your ankle. Even walking slowly along the road can result in injury or accident! Have FAITH in yourself!

  50. Dear Roland & Andrew,

Is it too late for me to register in Tennis lesson? Group 2 pls. If I won’t be able to get a racket, I’ll work-up in Gym, then join the makan for sure.

  60. Tennis! Tennis! Tennis!
Why did I want to start tennis with SHCians?
    1. To promote a healthy sport
    2. To promote friendship and “esprit de corps” among SHCians
    3. To let tennis be an outlet for the stressful life in Singapore
So don’t worry about the small things like rackets, shoes and attire.Just ENJOY the game and the company!

  61. Hello, all the Group 2 future tennis players, what is the proper attire for new beginners? Don’t want to spend unnecessary money because not sure whether can hold the racket properly or not. Thanks Molly for giving me the tennis racket and Roland for coaching us. Can I wear T-shirt & 3/4 track pant for the game? Roland/Molly please advice. :)

    Ah Nee

  62. Paiseh la.. Bro Tong, we all noe ur purpose of starting tennis for SHC lor.. but den u noe la.. l kk like us vry ks 1, uc AhNee oredi ask wat attire 2 wear liao..

    Ah Nee

  64. Huh Andrew! table tennis? who’s playing…just in case we don’t want to pick balls at squash court, we can adjourn to the table tennis room and play “tok tok” at the table…ha…ha…ha…. :)

    Ah Nee

  65. Aiyo AhNee..wanna show off bikini must also hv ‘figurely body’ hor!if so thin mana ada best?..haha

  67. Wei Ah Nee & Lina

Are you sure you gals can take it ? want to swim, play tennis, table tennis & squash… wait next day wake up body ache all over and can’t walk properly u noe…he.he..
Ah Nee, you can wear your new swimming costume you bought lor. Lina is expert can teach you liao.

Dolly # 107, you better sit at mj table lah… alamak must buy special shoes, tennis racket, attire, so ma fun & so exp. wait da-jadi, waste money, right?

Anyway, you guys enjoy yourself in whatever game you are in.

    Cheerio,
    Susan

  68. Hi Dolly (#107)

Roland at #46 explains “marking shoes”.

Hi Jonathan (#110)- I arrange the table tennis room. Please schedule your players, net and balls.

Hi all : Please advise Roland Tong in this main thread your final final decision so that he can focus on Grp 1 & 2 players.

  69. Andrew,

Sorry, I do not have the necessary equipment (nets, bats etc)…have not played since secondary school days.

Does anybody keen on table-tennis with the necessary equipment be able to help?

Otherwise, Andrew, no need to trouble to book the table-tennis room lah!

  70. Hahaha, Sue, tio tio, beta 2 find another 3 kakis 4 mahjong hor.. hehehe..

Wei Bro Tong, sori, i still dun ustnd wat is marking shoes la.. btmline, we still nid 2 hv tennis shoes, isst?

  71. Dolly,

I can go oredi. My daughter said the important thing can do this sat. Just told that my grand nephew’s birthday party ends at 4pm so can cheong to Tanah Merah.

Andrew – sorry can I still go for the get together?

Bro Tong – I think I will give Tennis a miss for this week. Will watch first.

Lily, Ah Nee, Nor – I will go and KLKK and makan lah.

I will bring something but will think about what it will be.

See you all there (paiseh must wait for Andrew to say ok first mah because change mind so many times) :)

  72. My dear Caroline:

Don’t need to be “paiseh” – life is full of mysteries, surprises and change.

Sure, like to enjoy journey of serendipity too-right?

You are most welcome to KLKK, watch mermaids, mermen, tennis kings and queens, makan and fellowship.

    : )) Andrew

  73. Carly, Dolly, Norly,
Don’t worry about tennis atiire.Wear a simple skirt or shorts will do. But if you intend to swim, then we’ll let you wear your bikinis! As for shoes, as long as they do not make marks on the court, then I suppose they are OK. Otherwise, play bare-foot lo (LOL!)Those who are strong can try hitting the balls with their palms if we are short of rackets.

  74. Aiyo, Carly, bikinis cannot la.. cant camouflage ‘san chum bak’ leh.. paiseh la..

Wahpiangz, Bro Tong, going 4 tennis lesson very susah leh.. bare foot, end day got blisters. Bare hand, end day, got 2c sinseh for koyot liao.. now, oredi headache liao.. :)

  75. Hi Roland : You are going to have “tan-mermaids” on the courts and in the pool.

All the 288 households will “google” their eyes with great excitement/laughters that can be heard by those in the passing trains too, not sure on the net…better than Youth Olympics victory roar.

We would also have “Romance of three Kingdoms” – GST: Gym Swim Tennis – in full orchestra. Follow by imperial banquet with w, w & s into the evening with special home-made/baked and five food “courts” within the strolling (KLKK) distance.

Missed cheng theng/rojak during flea mart walk last Sunday, can find compensation/top-up…including HKG roasted meats ,tim-sum, laksa and Klang bak kut teh, …..

  76. Dolly,
Don’t worry about blisters, be Happy! Andrew is a man of many talents (Mandarin,Malay, Arabic, Finance, Singing, …you name it!) He can take care of blisters too, right, Andrew? I shall only see to your tennis progress, hehehe!

  77. Haha, Roland, TY for your generous compliments.

Thot, hang up my Red Cross badge moons ago. Believe, still can handle tenderfoot.

Time permits, will pick up my tennis skills soon…..???? (feel at home) for guests first.

  78. Heeee, trust AndrewK to take care of blisters?

According to what I know of his Red X training, he will glue all the skin back, or scotch tape them…………..

  82. Hi! All Tennis “kakis”,
Andrew has confirmed his court booking for 1st March(Saturday) 2008 at 6.oopm at the Tanamerah Condo. Please try to be punctual.
    Andrew, “Terima Kasih”

The countdown for Saturday, 1st March is on!

  83. Hi Roland

Regret unable to join you for the tennis on 1st March due some urgent matters. Please accept my sincere apologies for the inconveniences caused.

    Thanks
    Fong

  84. Hi Bro Tong,
Sorry to inform u dat i wun b able 2 come on 1st Mar as I hv decided 2 temp stop all outdoor activities (as per Doc’s adv) due to bad to worst sensitive skin prob I m facing rite now.

  85. Hi Bro Tong,

Sorry, I won’t be able to join tennis on 1st Mar. Found my tennis gears, but discovered the shoes are “buaya-ed” and racket warped. Apologise for any inconvenience caused.

  86. Hi Roland,

So sori, I have to miss your tennis coaching this Saturday because I’m having the same problem with my tennis shoes. Hope you dun mind if i be there as an observer?

    Regards,

    veronique

  87. Gingko @137

Did you last play tennis with Queen Victoria?

No problem. Bring all your old tennis gear down for sale in the flea market under retro-sports wear fashion. Then get yourself the latest designer lawn threads. They are already getting into mainstream casual fashion wear.

White is out. You have a huge selection of colours and cuts. You may want to think of setting up a tennis fashion boutique too. Cut the sleeves and pull in those hemlines of your old clothes.

Put your broken racket in front of the display. You are halfway to a fashion powerhouse.

  88. Veron & Ginko,
Both of you seem to act in tandem. I’m beginning to wonder if your excuses are legitimate.LOL!However, the prerogative is yours to join or not to join.Anyway those who join must be committed in order to improve. In life when we choose to do a thing, we need to do it with passion in order to achieve success!

  89. ya lah Roland…they are unidentical twins…everywhere go together,but one sakit…the other also sakit..hehe

    sori Gingko/Veron..apa macam!..no racket,no shoes pun boleh join lah..unless u got hot date somewhere lah…hhhmmm :)

  90. Hi Bro Tong,

    Very funny, isn’t it?

All you beauties out there, enjoy yourselves and have a fun time running, chasing and smashing balls on the “Red Land” court…

  91. Nor @ 141,

No hot date lah, but yesterday had lotus roots and HOT date SOUP. So scorching & smacking good that burnt my soft soft lips… heehee.

  92. Salah thread…i should thank you here, not in Andrew’s..nonetheless I wont mind cakap again in my great honour to a good fren..
Terima kaseh for being our wonderful coach!..
    next time jumpa lagi!

  93. Hi Roland, Andrew & Aileen,

First of all, I want to thank Andrew for hosting the gathering and booking of the tennis court. A special thanks to Roland for his diligent coaching. I can hold a tennis racket with confidence now. All of us enjoyed chasing, hitting and smacking the balls with each other. Am looking forward to the next tennis lesson. Besides tennis, swimming & Gym, we also had a wonderful fellowship….chatting & eating. So much food on the table but everybody like Lina’s yam cake, not enough to go round, every one come back for more…so delicious and yummy. Andrew’s curry chicken, Mary’s kueh Lapis, Eileen’s fruit Salad, Lisa’s Doughnut and Linda’s fruits, all are so appetizing and yummy. Don’t know if Jie’s bottle of wine being consume, my Red wine & XO cognac, “tak laku”. Lastly Molly “tau pau” so much food from SGCC for us, I guess is for supper…he…he..he…what a starry starry night at the poolside… :)

    Ah Nee
