You can start a new Post or thread anytime

I have been asked many times if certain threads or Posts would be approved to appear on this forum.  Here are some guidelines.  As long as the Post does not dwell on discussion topics eg politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM, the Post is considered approved.

If you are organising a new event, and would like to invite other SHC members to join you, please go ahead.  But advertising is strictly not acceptable.  Please do not bring in non-member’s names into this forum.

Comments should come under appropriate threads.  Comments should not be written as new Post.  If  you do, it will likely be deleted.

Go ahead and argue, but please be sensitive and respect the opinion of other SilverHairsClub members.  Please have all the fun in your life.  Everybody is here to make new and more friends.  So, please don’t quarrel among yourselves;  it gives me headaches, and panadols wont help.  There is plenty of space on this website for you to dream and share your life’s vision, so write your "Reflections".  Fair enough?

  1. The SHC website has just been increased this month to 4 GB disk space and 30GB of traffic monthly. This is 10x the previous availability.

So go ahead, and write your life’s “Reflections”. But, please read the Post first. Have fun.

  2. Terence,
Understood dat we shd not bring any names of non- members into this forum. However, I felt that there shd be sum exception, e.g. name of dance instructor, rite? Name of dance instructor nid 2b mentioned in course she is conducting so dat members joining tese courses r aware of who is d dance instructor b4 commiting 4 classes. Hence, in this aspect, mayb mentioned of name in tis kind of situation can be an exception. Can be this done this way?

Of cos, we can try to cheo her in 2 join SHC but if she is there just 4 tis sake den it reali defeat the purpose of her joining SHC, rite?

  3. Hi Dolly #3,

As a senior senior SHC member, you may have a point. Maybe I was just been too rigid. I take your recommendation. On a case by case basis, Event Organisers can publish the name of a non-SHC member in their activities. No advertising is allowed though. Have fun.

    Terence Seah

  4. Dear Terence,

    “…advertising is strictly not acceptable.”

I see double standard here. Some members post information including rates and types of services were promptly shot down by you while others who promote full-length including time of operation, price, discount or rental were ok or even applauded by you.

If you allow one, you should allow all. Otherwise, all forms of advertising, as long as it is for monetary gain to someone, should not be acceptable.

  5. Lily @#5

Alas. There is no one thing for everything. The burden of leadership is to find the balance. And it comes back down to judgement call. Arbitrary though it may seem, it’s the situational best that we have.

If there is a perfect rule, there will be a perfect world. And a perfect man (both genders implied) to live in a perfect home.

We can do away with courts, politicians and war. All we have to do is to follow the Rule.

Without decision, there is no conflict. If only Eve did not ask. And if only Adam have not made a decision to eat the apple. We will still be in the garden playing with our pet snake.

What will you ask to have us do?

  6. Hi Terence

In addition 2 wat Lily hd mentioned, I wonder how advertising is acceptable or not or totally unacceptable. Take example of : 1) I hd a hse 4 sale (not $ mentioned) n 2) I hd a hse 4 sale 4 $100K ($ mentioned). Such contents (intentional or not) mentioned amongst contents in a comments shd be considered censured or not? :(

  7. i think a bit of advertising is ok provided it is inserted subtlely and by way of, and not done blatantly. , for example if a shc member starts a small business , like a food stall, etc, a one time invitation is ok., but not on a regular basis.
Advert should not be permitted for those promoting their employers’ businesses.
As Terence rightly puts it, every decision of his has to be judgemental to some degree. That’s why we have Judges in our Courts to interpretate the laws.

  8. YK @ #7

    Good point.

You must read between the lines. Here is a bigger area at stake. The RV and Second Home project is one of the three realistic ways for seniors to manage their costs and lifetyle.

On one hand, we are auditing the quality and cost of lifestyle in JB. We have to start somewhere too. How do you benchmark if we are not suppose to say anyting. And what better partner to start than a member who has a relevant property and knows the territory. And who knows. We may scrounge a few days of free stay and meal. Hee-hee

It is clearer if we look at the flip side. We cannot proceed to any reasonable discussion if we don’t discuss any material facts. Eg If we don’t share and engage into the issues, are we letting our own pedantic rules stop us from trying to better our own lives?

The end justifies the means. There is no clear line to draw. Leave Ah Ter to make the call on who is overstepping and who isn’t.

Progress comes with a price. If man had insisted on playing three monkeys with their evolution, earth will be known today as the Planet of the Apes.

  9. Hahaha!!

Terence: Now you really need Panadol… but I recommend “Tylenol 8-hours” which is more effective and you can buy in Thailand for B150 for 50 tablets.

It is a very real problem, but I suggest that the moderator has the final say and that there should be no further discussion on that issue once a decision is made.

Let’s all agree to keep our posts non-commercial and with no hidden agenda of selling or marketing whether multilevel or land banking or whatver.

  10. Hi everybody,

It would be pretty apropriate if I say I have the last say on published materials. I do think we are fairly liberal. I also try to resist asking fairy godmother for help. Do note she is capable of turning anybody into anything.

For those in doubt about whether an item is considered advertising, please feel free to write to me directly.

    Terence Seah

  11. Aiya Kenneth, – the moderator is the very same Ah Ter lah.

KT Wong, – you are beginning to sound like a preacher leh…:(…stop it hor.

I agree with Charles Wee that blantant advertising should not be allowed but a one time invitation is ok. Afterall, it’s to the benefit of the readers.

Actual details such as price, operating hours, type of services or products, etc. should only be allowed in the comment when being ASKED because it then shows that there is genuine interest amongst the readers of the forum.

  12. Wah lau, Terence

“Do note she is capable of turning anybody into anything.”

Is that a threat.?? I very frighten leh.!! (snort).

  13. Hi Lily, perhaps you have seen somewhere on this forum where some advertising should have been permitted, but was not approved or frowned upon.

Which one, in particular? Let’s have a look.

    Terence Seah

  14. Really, where to draw that fine line btwn advertising which is frowned at, and being informative which is imperative to start any process.

Like the proverbial elephant, I can recognise an advertisement when I see one but how to describe it?

Likewise, the Administrator will exercise his call which we trust will be correct. So far he has not scored a distinction here but enough credit for a promotion to the 18th level of wooing the fairy to become his godmother who will then be turned on thru a process called tim tim liu, to rampage like a buffalo in heat…..

  15. One of the reason of my silence is I found many post not relative to the thread.

I am only lending a helping hand here to those keen to stretch their dollar.

If it is not appreciated, I wish to apologise.

    Daniel….:)

  16. Hi, Terence:

There was a comment dated 13/2/2008 on my ‘Origami, anyone? (1423)’ post which did not appear as a comment in the thread. I received it as an automatically generated message in my personal email.

The comment was: “If CatherineY’s PC is out of order, gv someone who can repair PC e job n thus we create employment 4 e unemployed members.”

I put the non-appearance of the comment on the thread down to a possible system glitch at the time.

Now that this issue of ‘adverts’ on SHC posts has surfaced, would such comments be deemed acceptable?

    Cheers,

    Ron

  17. Don’t be sorry Daniel Kang. I am not against you or any other, for that matter, for publicising your intent. You have something to offer and thought there might be interest amongst the SHCians since there’s much talk about overseas property buying.

Likewise, Patrick Yeo thought he can help out by providing information on rates and types of services available to SHCians on travel and car rental, etc. But he got ticked off by Terence. (I’m sure there are SHCians who remembered this episode.)

    Haha Terence,

    How to have a look when some of the posts have already been deleted? Not convinced? Give you eg. of the posts that are missing : Post #1682, 1681, 1674, 1670, 1669, 1665, 1663, 1662, 1661, 1660, 1659, 1658, 1656, 1648, 1647, 1646, 1641, 1640, 1631, 1623, 1618, 1616, 1615, 1614, 1609, 1607, 1606, 1605, 1584, 1581, 1579, 1578, 1577, 1576, 1575, 1574, 1572, 1571, 1570, 1569, 1567, 1566, etc. etc.

    My dear Terence,
I have always respected your stance and know that, as much as possible, you try to be fair and tolerant. Perhaps, it’s time to relegate the duty of a moderator to an independent body? Otherwise, take 2 Aspirin and call me in the morning. LOL

  18. Hi Daniel,

Your thread on retirement in JB has been useful in the formulation of short-term retirement ideas as well as reviewing of new places with cheaper alternatives for SilverHairs.

I appreciate your participation and time to offer tips and ideas.

    Terence Seah

  19. Hi Lily,

Some of the posts may be incomplete, without a body, or without a heading, or stay as a draft, or is in testing mode, or spams or political activists championing for Taiwan, selling viagra, penis extension, looking for women or men to …, or repeats, or virus, or posts from non-members but people who just logged in to try out what this forum is all about.

Actually, I would be most pleased if someone would like to moderate this website. Would anyone like to volunteer as SHC website moderator? One and a half year term, ending 31 Dec 2009.

    Terence Seah

  20. Hi All,

I think Terence comes as close to be as perfect to a well-balanced, matured and seasoned person in all of SHC. Otherwise who would have started this and also take it so lightly and have fun while spending a bite of his income.

But his rationale is quite clear, as long as someone is saying or doing something in an entrepreneurial sense that it is encouraged. But if someone doing it as a profession then it is simply advertising, right ‘Watson’.
Terence you are doing doing fine and there is no need to take panadol, but get more ideas of how the old in Korea are living. I heard they retire at 62 also, but how do they keep on living not just passing the time ? Maybe you can sell SHC idea to them ??

  21. Hi, Terence:

Thanks for your clarification at #19. Will forward that email to you tomorrow, as it is in another computer. That comment was actually from Yew Kwong.

    Hi, Lily (#20)and all:

I am currently on several forums and can say that being a forum moderator is not an easy task.

Terence may not be perfect (as if anybody is) but is doing a fine job. I don’t know how much he spends on Panadol, but I am sure he is sacrificing much time, effort and $$$ to keep this forum going. So, people, let’s give Terence a hand for all that he has done, and will continue to do(clap clap clap). :o)

Of course, if there is anyone with the necessary expertise and willingness to take some knocks now and then, I’m sure Terence will be grateful for the help he can get.

    Ron Koh

  22. Lily @ # 20

Anybody who can go through old comments looking for minute details definitely has my vote and keeps the job as moderator.

Loads of laughs. Play censor and censure one another. SHC challenge. Person who has the highest score will have to organize the next big cheng-kay-top-up event.

    Two turkeys with one stone.

    Hee-hee

  23. Lily @ #12

No fair. People can, I also can. Big words on full lips sound so sexy. Understand the meaning is not important.

Feel the words …. Ooohhhh La La !!!!…..

  24. A @# 31

I am very contented and happy already.

We will be establishing our Islamic trading credentials in a watershed pan Islamic exhibition attended by the top Malaysian politicians including the PM in KL this fortnight.

ATM white label (I can’t even pronounce the name in Arabic) will be the only Islamic ready trading algos in the world.

Where do we go from here. Except to Dubai for holidays. I was just told by a charming lady that the Islamic way to handle four is “balance and equal love”. So now I am now hot on loving everything equally.

Love, Love, Love and Love. Hee-hee

  25. Terence has more callings in life than to make judgmental calls, a thankless & uneviable task but inevitable to him as the SHC founder. Besieged today, tomorrow and for many more days & months to come, he’ll soldier on, knowing what a true grit he is after a few lap-ups with him.

KT & Scorebor – is the man advertsing and promoting the company’s business? Or is he trying to help SHCians to invest and grwo their money in furtherance of SHC’s objective of mutual help and sharing of opportunities?

So, was GibsonT’s sharing of his company’s land-banking with us to be doubted?

There’s no easy answer to this.

Ultimately to my mind, it’s down to the sharer’s integrity – does he come clean and have only the noble desire to improve the lot of SHCians with little and no personal gain in mind? If X-ray cant give you the answer, we shdnt expect more from Terence. Let him err on the side of caution if he does err at all.

  26. Dear KT,,,,I can’t help but giggle.

When I said that you are beginning to sound like “a” preacher…..I didn’t say you sound like “the” preacher. So, no need to be defensive ya.? :) You are anything but…. and I have alot more respect for you than….. (thank goodness we don’t have to emigrate, phew!….hehe.)

    Dear Ron Koh and others,

Thank you for taking an interest in my comment,,,,, (I seemed to have opened up a can of worms.) Terence knows that I am not critizing him. I merely made my stand known. (What good is a forum if we can’t speak our mind in a civil manner?)

May be I’m too straight forward – a yes is a yes; and a no is a no. That’s just my stand but I won’t impose it on others. You may agree with me….I don’t care. You may not agree with me….I still don’t care. One thing for sure, I won’t bother to respond to anything that does not interest me or worthy of my attention.

  27. Hi Lily #35,

I was glad when you raise the issue of advertising, it helps to clarify issues aloud. You have been one of the most senior members of this club, and definitely a respected one. I always love to hear your viewpoints. And, I like your frankness. Let’s encourage more people to speak out, argue and debate, but not quarrel. You have set a good example too.

    Terence Seah

  28. A @#37

Ah. But a few origami sparrows does a rich summer flea market make.

The worm is cast. Now every participant at last evenings “Virtual Shop and Flean Market” knows how they can start a global business with no money down.

But we can only cast. We cannot force the bird to eat. The bird has to pick the worm.

So just select your consignment product and be driven down the road to financial freedom through your own Home Enterprise.

  29. Lily @ #35

    I cool only. Very zen.

The final solution for all members is nigh at hand. It is so simple. Why didn’t I think of it until you reminded me.

When he who dreams of high place finally reaches there, I will be member for Kg Glam and rule the streets around Bali Lane. Those who lives in East Coast better detour. I am closing the highway exit for the mother-of-all flea market and street music concert. Every F1 car passing by will have to slow down to pay ERP over 6 gantries in a row. Speed camera in operation too.

Want to be Queen of Bintan. Re-brand “Amazon Island”. Real women and toy boys only.

Who say we can’t make our own paradise on earth.

    Hee-hee

  30. Yes! at our age we shouldn’t be quarrelling, esp with fellow members. The club is 1 yr old? So we don’t know each other that well yet to fight and be forgiven. We should try adopt this attitude….If you say something which I don’t agree or see eye to eye with, I would say…aiyah…suan le pah.

  31. Hi Terence,
Very interesting comments. I’m new and therefore just manage to understand the ‘ideology’, if I may use the word, of this forum. It is difficult to differentiate between “information and advertisement”. I solely agree that it should not be used as an avenue for ‘advertisement’ of a product or service but I think it can be evaluated whether a posting is an advert but a genuine intention of wanting the group to benefit by it. But whatever it is, if it seems to be an advert that it could have been done inadvertently. I respect your discretion.

  32. Hi Rahman,

In principle, if the forum is used as a mechanism for SHCians to meet new and more friends, I am pretty flexible on it. Activities, arising out of this objective, are always welcome and encouraged.

Any material with a clear objective to sell or promote is not allowed.

The club is for individuals, and for you to also meet new friends. Come, and meet other members. Create new activities, and join the fun.

    Terence Seah

  33. The SHC forum is open to all members; and easily read by audience around the world. I would like to remind again that contact information eg address and telephone numbers are not to be published on this website; for various security reasons. We should apply this guideline to both male and female members.

As such, to avoid nuisance calls and other security considerations, all contact telephone numbers and addresses on this website will be removed. I apologise for any inconvenience.

    Terence Seah

  34. Hi, sometimes when you post or make a comment with a telephone contact inside, you may have noted that the number is deleted. Please note that tel/mobile not accepted on this forum.

If you have a personal website or blog, you may add it in the user profile. After you log in, you should look for USER. Add your website there. Anywhere on the website, the website will be deleted too.

    Terence Seah

  35. Some of the recent Posts have been deleted. If you are writing a comment, please find the correct topic or Post, and write a comment. Please do not start a new Post.

    Terence Seah

  36. Hi Terence

I have just noticed that you posted this mail today, 24th March 2009, and subsequently I see the rest of the comments were dated in May 2008. But there again your last post #51 is back to 24th March 2009.

I thought I just would like to alert you – is the blog system working fine or am I seeing stars ??

    Thanks & cheerios
P.S. Hope your headache has gone.

    Myra

  37. Hi Terence,

At a time like this, jobs are scarce. At the same time, I too would like to help SHCians who are in need of a job.

    Pls. consider the following appointment
….SVP Singapore -The Organisation of Senior Volunteers
invites applications for FUND DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE.

Is this treated as an advertisement ?

  38. Now I need Panadol too after reading this post…:-))))

Like Myra, I logged in and saw this post and noted there are already 50 odd responses…wah must be interesting…so went in to read the comments.
Then saw Andrew Kuan’s comments….I thot, hey he has returned. Then saw JuneLim’s comments!!! wah piang, wht’s that abt??? then I noticed the dates!!!!

Terence, u very cute cute one u know :-)))))

  39. Tthis topic of writing a new Post has been around for a long time. If you have some crazy ideas, or want to find some one to travel with you to meechamkuay or just looking for a few people to go East Coast beach and scream the night away, simply write a new post. Dont forget to add a category.

If you are replying a comment to an existing Post, go to that Post, and at the bottom of that Post, you will see “Leave a reply”.

And if after 14 days of not able to do any of the above, write to Yew Kwong, our Website Administrator or Dolly Lim, Club manager from 1 May. The new roles have started. Please address your issues to them. They need some aspirins. Or try getting help from Mary, June, Karen, Ronald, Patrick, Susan, aiyah so many.

    Terence Seah

  40. Hi StevenC #41,

If you know of a job opportunity, and if the position is clearly specified for SilverHairs, please go ahead. Note, this SHC website is not for job advertisements. Therefore, a position meant for the general public is not acceptable.

You may try Yew Kwong, he may have another viewpoint. I go along with his decision.

    Terence Seah

  41. Terence,

Perhaps it is time to encourage SHCians that are interested to advertise their services or products, to visit your other websites : like “http://silverhairsclub.com/blue-helmet” or “http://silverhairsclub.com/2greendots”.

    Have a Nice Day

    Patrick Yeo

  42. The people on the banner from the left are:

Pauline Chew, Terence, Susan Tan, Gingko, Hong Jeng, Lily, John Howe (back only), Dolly, Dennis Wee, Ah Nee, myself, Daisy Yeo, Susan Chang, Jade Seah, Veronique (I think, standing at the back in a white hat), Bira, Annto and Daniel Ong.

  43. Hi Terence,

    Ok. Thanks for clarifying.

Since you did NOT treat it as an advertisement, I will forward those jobs suitable for Silverhairs from RSVP or Action for Seniors from time to time or other reputable companies.

  44. HI Wong K.T. ,

Apa macham ? Long time you “VANISH” into thin air. I am happy that you are safe and sound and back to business.

How is your 2 dogs getting on ?

  45. Greetings Mary, June, Karen, Ronald, Patrick, Susan #41

I have written a post (lst time) time but not published why ha? basically i just wanna engage fellow members to chat on gut n bones issues………

    have a nice weekend ahead
    cheers

  46. Hi PatrickY #43,and all who have products and services to advertise,

Thank you for your suggestion. Advertising on SilverHairsClub.com is not allowed. Besides promotion of products and services, this rule applies to invitations to talks with the intention to sell.

However, members are free to use http://www.2GreenDots.com which was set up for members to sell their products or services eg handbags, tours, magazines, computers, 2nd hand goods, jewellery, dancing classes, almost anything, except sex services and MLM. Add to this, the site allso allows talks and seminars to sell land banking, insurance, health products and properties.

    Use of http://www.2GreenDot.com is free.

    Terence Seah

  47. To Admin:
    Guidance needed –

I sent a post regarding job opportunities last night and clicked ‘post’. The post disappeared and I went looking for it – found it in ‘draft’ but when I wanted to edit, I saw the text was gone – only the heading remained.

I have just rewritten it and this time I clicked ‘ for review’. Please advise if this is the correct way to get a post published. TQ.

  48. Hi everybody,

I was just looking at how many SHCians visit the SilverHairsClub home. During April 2009, we had 25,611 visits to our home. Guess many SHCians come the club a few times a day.

Some 10,478 hits entered the club by typing “www.SilverHairsclub.com”.
About 42% of readers enter our website by going into the Posts.
About 6% of readers visit our website by reading the comments only.

Strange, but approx 21% of readers are from Singapore.
About 18% are satisfied and exit our website after reading the latest comments.

Most SHCians read the SilverHairsClub website from 8am to just after midnight. Most members start to read the SHC website between 8 and 9am, and between 11pm and midnight.

    Terence Seah

  49. Recently, someone posted a comment on the SHC website; and found his/her comment deleted. I am not sure who the person is; but if you are reading this comment, you may like to know why the comment was deleted.

    1. Your display name does not have the first and last name.
    2. You did not sign off your comment with your name.
    3. We have sent you three emails to acknowledge membership; but there was no response.
    4. We have not received your membership application via the email address you have given on this wesbite.

  50. A few posts have not been published because there is no content, except for the subject. One possible reason is you have not chosen a “Category” when you save or publish the Post. Please check to make sure you have selected a category before you start the Post.

    Have fun.
