Overnite at ECP & SHC gathering on Sat/Sun 16-17 Aug 2008

Hi SHCians,  be crazy, and give your SilverHairs years a change.  Remember I was saying that one day, we should have a gathering on a Sunday.  Well, this early morning I had a walk at the East Coast Parkway, together with Ron Lai.  I must say a Sunday morning gathering can be very refreshing.  So, to start with, here is the real dream.   An overnight camp at ECP, with the aim of having SHCians get to know one another better, and making new and more friends.  Followed, by a gathering on a refreshing Sunday morning.

  • Session 1 – Sat 1200 1500 hrs – Build a 2 to 4 pax tent at ECP.  Check in time.  Participants should share the cost of a tent.  Go look at Carrfourre, check out costs and share with us here.  If you have not camped for years, this is real fun.  Campers decide their own camp-mates.  I shall ask Yew Kwong and cycling team for their advice on the exact camp location, near Burger King, taking toilets into consideration.
  • Session 2 – Sat 1800 hrs – BBQ.  Concept: Charcoal and fire will be provided.  Bring your own meat and sweet potatoes, just for yourself.  Daylight BBQ, to make sure we see what is cooked.  You can bring your own food and drinks.  Stay flexible. Now,  replaced with a potluck.
  • Session 3 – Sat night – Camp overnight.  Do whatever you like.  You can go fishing, chit-chatting, swimming, having a beer or two somewhere, watch the submarines swimming out in the open seas, aiyoh up to individuals.  I think can count falling stars too.  Bring your guitars.  Gate close at 12mn.
  • Session 4 – Sun 0800 hrs morning – Wake up early for SHC gathering at camping area and at Burger King.  For non-campers, come join the SHC gathering.  Breakfast on individual ac.
  • Sunday 12nn – Check out and go home.  I shall ask Ron Lai to assist with providing bus service information to Burger King.

The above event is confirmed.  It will go on, irrespective of weather and number of pax.  There is no charge to participate in the above activity, except as mentioned above.

Terence Seah

A registration list will be started.  Please indicate the sessions you will be attending.  You can also attend one session.  If you like the fun to knowing SHCians better, come for all four sessions.  Strictly for registered SilverHairsClub members only.

  • Terence Seah – Session 1, 2, 3, 4.  Please accept my apology, as this is the only weekend I am in Spore.  Now, who wants to share my tent?
  • Lily Ho – Session 3 & 4.  Thinking of squeezing into Terence’s tent.
  • Dolly Lim – Session 3 & 4.  Squeezing into Terence’s tent.
  • Yew Kwong – Session 3 & 4.  Squeezing into Terence’s tent.

  1. Hi Yew Kwong and cycling team,

Re the mid-August month gathering, I am aware you have a cycling event mid month too. As you are pretty familiar with the nooks and corners of ECP, can you recommend a spot for camping, near toilets and near Burger King.

Hi Ronald Lai, and those living near ECP,
Need your help to jot down the bus numbers, along Marine parade, and how to get to the Burger King. Also, where to park.

    Terence Seah

  2. Terence,

There are BBQ pits situated along the stretch of MacDonald and Burger King. I remembered my niece told me that we need to apply on line to the National Parks for using the BBQ pit. Price range from $20 – $40 depending on the size of the BBQ pit. This coming sat, we can check out the location for the tent and BBQ pit.

    Ah Nee

  3. One service which I am very familiar is bus 401 which operates from Bedok Interchange into ECP and loops back from opp Fort Gardens during weekends.

    From Bedok:
On Sat, 1st bus at 2pm and the last bus at 10pm.
On Sun, 1st bus at 10am and last bus at 8pm.

    From ECP:
On Sat, 1st bus at 2.20pm and the last bus at 10.20pm.
On Sun, 1st bus at 10.20am and last bus at 8.20pm.

To be sure you do not miss the last bus from ECP to Bedok, check the board at the returning bus stop for the timing.

  4. Hi Terence!

How I wish U ‘ve organised it on 8-10 Aug instead! then I can definitely join in the fun.

Think many of us would be more free for the National Day holidays.
    Jux hoping only,
    Regards.

  5. Dear Terence

Please sign me up for session 2, 3 & 4. Subject to her travel schedule, please also sign Dolly up for the same sessions as well. We will share your tent if it’s ok with you.

Cycling will continue as usual and cyclists who wish to join in this event, will have to register here in accordance to Terence’s request and indicate the session/s you will be attending.

As indicated by Ah Nee, the Cycling Team will check-out the locations this Saturday & furnish you with full report.

  6. Thanks Ah Nee, once you have identified a spot, let me know the closest recommended BBQ pit, and I shall book it online.

Hi Cat Ho, Apology I am unable to change the date, as I wont be in Singapore during the National Day holidays.

  7. Wow, Terence. This appears to be a very packed weekend meeting. Don’t think I can handle sleeping overnight in a tent. These stiff bones will crack! I will come for the Sunday morning session, but i think 8am is abit too early? As the first bus only start at 10am?

    Cheers, Lydia.

  8. Hi Terence,

    I will come for the 1, 2, & 4 session!

Session 3 can be a problem. The ‘Heart’ Rock Concert at Marina Bay Floating Stage has pre-concert entertainment at 5.30-7.30pm and the main Concert at 8.00-11.00pm on the same day!

  9. Hi Terence!

    I will come for Sessions 2 & 3.
On Sat nite, it will be after 8pm. To join in the singing & chit-chatting sessions only. Will bring some snacks.
    Will not camp over-nite.

Will drive home & go again early in the a.m. to meet up for breakfast at campsite or Burger King on Sun a.m.

Pls specify which car-park @ ECP for Sat.
Not very sure where BK is even for Sun a.m
Quite some time didn’t recky the place.
    Sign of getting old.
    Cheers!

  10. Gathering at near Burger King cannot be complete with the Bugger King being near it……………..yes, expect to see him there but obviously, he cant announce his ETA and lose the element of surprise. Hope somewhat bring more butter than for the bbq……………….

  11. Hi Terence

It was a great pleasure to have breadfast together with you on Sunday morning at Burger King, followed by a morning walk along the sea-front, with joggers, cyclists, roller-bladders, walkers and what not, enjoying the morning dew and sea-breeze blowing wild.

No doubt 16th & 17th Aug choosen dates are the only days you are available, even though the 16th Aug would have to crash with the function at Marina Bay’s HEART ROCK CONCERT, it could be arranged with participants of the concert, namely:

    Christina Chan
    Alan Bok
    Ann Bok
    Dan Huang
    Joy Chuang
    Clara Chay
    Annie
    Rene (2)
    Ginko
    Karen Thio (2)
    Lina (6)
    John Seah
    Eunis Kon
    Alice Lai
    Ron Lai

after 11pm, whoever wish to prolong the night longer to join in the camping overnight at the EAST COAST PARKWAY or just to mingle with the SHCians at the beach front for the night to create friendships.

    RonLai

  12. Hi Terence

In respect of the transport services available to BURGER KING at EAST COAST PARKWAY,the following informtion I commented at the POST: FUTURE VENUE FOR SHC MONTHLY GATHERINGS……DT 10.07.08, repeat hereunder:

(On top of what Oi Cheng mentioned in #3)
On weekends you will find public bus service 401 operating throughout the day n night, running the length of the SERVICE ROAD from end to end at the EAST COAST PARKWAY.

There are several underground tunnels leading from one side of the road of the ECP to the other side (sea-front).
The one, most convenient, leading to BURGER KING is situated between Blk 14 n 18 at Marine Terrace, off Marine Parade Rd. From Marine Parade Rd bus stop, it takes only 15/20mins to walk towards the tunnel.

Bus services operating along Marine Parade Rd are:

    31, 36, 43, 48, 55, 76, 135, 197, 853
    with additional services:
    13, 16, 76A, 135A, 196 n 646
operating along the same road towards Changi.

    Catherine Ho #10
FREE Car-park facilities are available along the service road and certain LTA parking lots. Burger King outlet is facing the sea-front, a short distant to the left of the MacDonald outlet.

  13. Hi Terence,

“O/nite at ECP” – Wow! Just mouthing the words brings excitement. A pity to miss the fun. I’ll pray for a starry night for you campers. Enjoy!

  14. Hi Ron Lai!

Tku for info & prompt reply. Much appreciated. Will go & try there, if not then I’ll give U guys a buzz. Hopefully,
1 of U will come & save me.( noise level mite high to detect)
Left of Mac outlet, depends on which direction I’m facing Mac rite. Mac the 1 near Big Splash?
    Appreciated

  15. Hi Catherine

There is only ONE MacD at East Coast Parkway, next door is Hongkong Restaurant to the left and Bowling Alley to the right of MacD. The one you mentioned at Big Splash is KFC not MacD. Talking of direction facing is usually standing at the main road/srvice road, facing the outlet.

    RonLai

  16. The Marine Parade way seems so long. So i think the easiest way to get to ECP on a Sunday morning is to take a taxi or drive. Perhaps those who are driving there, can give a lift to the poor guys who have to walk the long tunnel? I’m still not sure where is Burger King? I thought it was MacDonald at Marine Cove?

    Cheers, Lydia.

  17. Would love to join you all but have to fly off to KL today on company business. Only back next week, so hope to join in the next camp.

So wishing everyone a great time this weekend.

    Lisa

  18. Hi JuneL

If you know Terence’s mind, you will know, WHY at 12.00 midday?

Having set with him on Sunday early moirning for breadfast, you will know the reason, as good as mine.

    CHOPE, CHOPE a good spot, lor…….early bird…….

    RonLai

  19. Hi Terence

Please register Yew Kwong for session 3 & 4 and he will bunk in your tent as well.

Dolly & I also change our session to 3 & 4 instead becos of cycling (4-6.30pm).

  20. Hi Ron Lai!

TQ for all the feedback! Much appreciated! 2 long never been to that side of island. will go & recce on that Sat nite!
Did U go to Kovan last nite?
    Regards,
    Cat Ho

  21. Hi..fellas, sorry but my usual kiasooooooo questions – Do we need a permit to pitch a tent or tents ? Who to ask? Better don’t get chased away in the middle of the night.

  22. No, Daniel-C, you’re not kiasu but just being cautious, as much as I am being practical with my following suggestions.

Flying our SHC mast high. Nest to it, fly a banner that says in 4 offficial languages to mean the same thing : we have all the requisite permits & licences, from local authorities to the Secretary Gen of UN, and the Commanders of NATO an dthe Peacekeeping Forces.

    But that’s not enough.

We will have Steven but that still wont be good enough. We need his dog – that one which looks fierce in foto and still has a lot of teeth. Steven’s dog will stand in the frontline defence vs intruders. Then the towering Steven in 2nd defence.

Further in, our busty pretties will form the next barricade. We hv seen how big Dolly has and she sure can knock many tysons down, and park rangers normally look more like san ma chai than tyson so she and her gang can more than handle.

inner, we hv Dan-H sitting there playing chess by himself, with a bottle of vodka next to him. We read in gungfu novels that this type of character can kill from a distance without moving. Extremely dangerous. And the vodka shows tht he has connection with the russians…all the way back to the tsars.

Finally, at the back, we have bicycles……..ready for us to take off if all lines of defence fail.

  23. Hi Tim Liu @ comment 27,

Although you are v. busy working , I sincerely APPRECIATE your time and effort to put up with the above HUMOUROUS jokes to cheer us up once in a while.

I couldn’t help laughing to myself.
    Going Nuts ? Ha! ha!

  24. Hi Daniel C,

Don’t worry, from what I know, no permit is required to pitch a tent or tents. But if the National Park warrant officer notice that you have camped there for more than 5 days, they will ask you where you don’t go home? ha..ha….ha…typical singaporean, free lodging, free supply of water & electricity, no need air-cond…free & breezy by the sea……

    Ah Nee

  25. Hi Ah Nee n DanielC.

Sorry you got it wrong as regards to permits fot pitching up tents at EAST COAST PARKWAY. Weekends no permits required, weekdays must have permits from National Park Board. The reason is that, if no permits, lots of foreigners would pitch the tents there every day and night, you can just imagine “Hell will broke loose”.

    RonLai

  26. Thanks Ron and Nee, for the assurance. Anyway, if really necessary i think we will have a few automobiles where we can all squeeze inside for the night. If I remember correctly, the record is 30 students inside a car. Shall we try breaking it?

And Tim (ref 27) your rings of defence are really impregnable. However, if all else fail, we still have one last defence – Patrick Khoo will give a taaaaaaaaaaaaa………………………lk to the intruders.

  27. Dear Terence

  28. Hi Terence

As report had given to you by Lily on Area C BBQ Pits near Burger King, not available as bookings heavy, the only alternative, to do away with BBQ, just have pot-luck, as you have suggested earlier would be lovely.

    RonLai

  29. Hi Terence

At last your interview with STRAITS TIMES appeared today on Page 6 SUNDAY TIMES.

What a beautiful writeup, a follow-up of the membership drive to hit 10,000 looks like is on the card, BRAVO…

    RonLai

  30. Hi Lily, thank you for the recce. We will go ahead with your recommended place to pitch the tents. We would also have the potluck to replace the BBQ. All other schedules remain the same. I shall bring chicken curry (Indian style) with bread.

Tent shall be at your recommended best choice : Area C (between Marine Cove and Raintree Cove).
Facilities : near toilet, carpark CP4, bus stop for bus 401, overhead bridge link to Marine Parade HDB estate, Burger King, drink vending machines, fitness park & between 2 pavilions (in case it rain).

Hi RonL, morning gathering as planned at Burger king.

    Terence Seah

  31. Hi Terence,
Congrats on the ST article. Good to see our leader beaming away, for the press. You should not be shy and put it on the SHC banner.

Good that SHC is getting the publicity it deserves.

Sorry about borrowing this thread, but could not search for the correct thread.

As punishment, I will buy some night snacks and drinks for your camp. Till then, Well Done.

  32. In here today, I take my hats off to Lily for doing so much for SHC having taken my poants off on Saturday when she, tasked on a mission, came a-checking the toilet at ECP.

She was totally devoted, oblivious of the cat-calls and whistlings, the curious look of the modesty conscious and the droolings of the less than decent. Totally focussed, she went abt doing her job, making sure every cistern cd flush, toilet papers were not recycled and no ahwah eatbrahim kind was to be found.

On her way out, we gave her a standing ovation – true in every sense of the word – and readily raised it hugh & formed an arch for her to walk through. She had our shower of blessings…………..

  33. After reading all the comments, 17 Aug sure is interesting to participate-already noted it in my diary but just need to remember it. It had been ages since I last cycled, would like to join in the cycling team – sure be a lot of fun!!!By the way I just registered as a new member after reading the ST article – hooray to Terence :)

  34. Hi Terence

After the coming nite’s out with a convoy of SHCians to the “HEART ROCK CONCERT” on the same date 16th Aug and most probably with a follow-up of supper thereafter, and if some of them are not too tire out, join you and the rest to enjoy the sea-breeze and not forgetting your lovely Indian Chicken Curry.

For those who are taking public buses to Marine Parade Road, stop at BLK 58/57, cut across the void deck of HDB estate to Marine Terrace towards BLK 14/18, thus facing the TUNNEL leading to BURGER KING outlet.

Alan and Ann Bok, Alice and I will join you and other SHC members, namely: Lily, Dolly and Yew Kwong, Maureen Lee and Charles Chua for a morning breadfast at Burger King.

    Ron n Alice Lai

  35. Hi Terence,

I wish to register for this event. I will not be setting up nor squeezing into any tent. I will go for cycling first, go home and shower and return to have dinner at the campsite. Will think of what to bring for the pot-luck. Will stay till late late and then go home to sleep. Will join you all for breakfast the next morning.

If you and your tent-nants want to have a swim in the pool or jacuzzi, you are welcome to come to my place after cycling.

    Warmest regards

    Caroline Gee

  36. Yeah Caroline

Hurray to have you join us. Thanks for the invitation to use your pool / jacuzzi. I might just take up that offer.

Except for YK, we are going to squeeze into Terence’s tent not for the night-cap lah. How can our old bones tahan? Like you, we will stay till late late and then go home to sleep lor. But hor, you kway-buk – how late is late hah?

  37. Hi Lily, Yew Kong, Caroline, CharlesC,

I think this ECP overnight camping is going to be very cozy. My tent can sleep 4; I use it regularly when I go camping in Thailand’s national resorts and parks. So, you are welcome to my little home. Once you feel sleepy, you can go back to your pool and jacuzzi. I shall stay on; just to feel the mood at the ECP on a Sat night.

My maid is going to buy 4 chickens, less one, as Ah Nee is not coming. This is chicken curry, Indian style, no coconut. Eat with chiam tau bread.

CharlesC, a few packs of snacks will do. Do you drink red wine? I shall get one or two bottles, if you like to drink with me. YK, I remember you like Red wine. How about this? I am in Kolkata now, and I see they have some nice Red wines from North India, where temperatures are great for growing grapes. Ok, two bottles. We can have chicken curry and red wine, after your cycling.

For those going to the rock concert, no worries, enjoy yourself. We will always have another time together with fellow SHCians.

    Terence Seah

  38. Hi Ah Nee,

Just because you are not going to that ECP overnight camp, Terence is going to cook 1 chicken less. Ah Nee, are you such a big eater? Can you devour 1 chicken all by yourself?Since Terence’s maid is going to cook, I think we should go try her curry chicken before we go to that Heart Rock Concert. Shall we? If so, Terence will have to buy more chickens!

  39. If thats the case….Terence, ask your maid to cook as planned. No need to minus 1 chicken, me and my buddies are going to EC in the afternoon to try your “without coconut curry chicken”. So 1 chicken for us…ha..ha..ha…

    Ah Nee

  40. Terence,

thanks. May take up your suggestion.

    Lily,

of course pending your decision to take up my offer of jacuzzi and swimming.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  41. Hi Terence,

Will be bringing my guitar to join you and may set up camp too. Will try 2 Thai songs, ‘kookad'(always fighting, like cats and dogs) and ‘Dong Dot Dao’ (Blame it on the stars).
Caroline if you are game we can try a duet with your smooth silky voice like Diana Ross, I will try to be like Lionel Ritchie. We can try ‘Endless love’ as Steven seems to suggest ‘love is in the air’ and so this song may come the theme for the first SHC success event.

Also I have not forgotten that I owe you your fav song ‘What a Wonderful world’ (hope you dont get teary eyed) so will add ‘Love portion no. 9’ to clear the misty clouds.

Ron Lai, Lydia, Rene and all those who want to jam can join us and have fun under the stars, hopefully we will not flood the night.

Also like to meet all who who want to organise their mini-events on the 12/13 Sept, so that we can discuss what we can do. LIke a totally Eletronic Karaoke competition where the machine is the judge. Susan and James the Oct EO hope to see you there.

    Cheers

  42. Thanks Ronald. Looking forward to singing a duet with you but cannot be like Diana Ross lah. You can go ahead and be like longan lychee heee heee. Please bring along song sheets if you have them.

With singing and makan, like that how to go home?

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  43. Looks like setting up tent on Sat 16 Aug at noon, is not a brilliant idea. Maybe I will be the only one there at 12nn.

I am going to set up tent at 3pm, instead of 12nn on Sat, join the cycling, and come back for chicken curry dinner. Definitely will stay overnight. Some of you will join me there to stare at the shooting stars, and perhaps go home on Saturday night. Others may join after the Esplanada concert. RonaldW may bring his guitar, and CharlesC and DanielC may also turn up. So, keep this flexible.

    Terence Seah

  44. For this Sat 16Aug, I confirm my tent will be up at 3pm. Then join cycling. Back to the tent at 6pm, after cycling. Will have curry chicken and bread for dinner.

Stay overnight to listen to the sea lapping on the shores. Some SHCians will stay; while some will go back. But no worries, I shall stay overnite, as I haven’t experienced overnite at ECP for a long time. For some, you can sit and join me, or go back home, and come the next day.

Then, I see you for Sun 17 Aug morning gathering at Burger King, ECP. Have a great weekend.

    Terence Seah

  45. Terence,

We are in the mood for a beach party tomorrow night. 8 of us are not going to the Marina Bay Concert, will join you and the rest of the cyclist for cycling and later squeeze ourselves in your Tent. Cheers! :)

    Ah Nee

  46. ANee, while 8 of u dun go 2 concert, I m unable to come back n join all of u leh…

Terence, take out my name hor..

    Lily/Carly, can go swimming n bob-bob liao.. will do so wen I m back. Enjoy…. Cheers… Dolly

  47. Hi Ah Nee,

Wow, am I excited. 8 to one tent. Never try before leh. I think 4 chicken curries sufficient. Hope all of you dont eat so little. I shall have chicken curry with rice.

See u and let’s have a simple simple beachy party.

    Terence Seah

  48. Hi Terence,
I don’t know what time the cycling will finish but I will see you tomorrow night. As I said I will bring the night snack. Is savoury or sweet preferable? I am still open to suggestions.
I note you said you will put up the tent and then go cycling. Won’t the tent be unattended? Is it risky?
    Till then, Ciao.
