  5. Hi Daniel

I’m interested in your cooking class. Appreciate if you could keep me in the loop when you have decided on the date.

Btw, do you have any easy-to-make kaya recipe? I used to make my own preserves but not the kaya.

    Thanks,
    Ele

  6. To everybody with a keen interests in cooking and baking,

As you can see from this forum, cooking and baking classes are sought after activities. We definitely have more students than teachers. Maybe, it’s because we have no convenient kitchens.

Not too long ago, I was in Tokyo, and I went to a food court located with a large supermarket.Instead of selling food, one stall was a demo kitchen. There were chairs, a video camera aimed at the wok and a large TV.

Do you think this is viable?

    Terence Seah

  7. Terence, are you thinking of video taping the cooking session and distribute it/them to those who are unable to attend the classes? Viable space-constraint solution.

If there is dire need for kitchen space, I can make mine available on Saturdays the next 2 months (till Oct). It should be able to comfortably accommodate 15 people.

  8. Hi Eleanor,

At some stage, I hope that, we can have a demonstration kitchen. Feasibility and viability need to be studied.

In the meantime, I have actually allocated a date for a cooking/baking session on Sat Aug 25, 2007. Time is not fixed. This event is in our SilverHairsClub schedule.

Not really for those wanting to pick up receipes, but more for those wanting to teach cooking and baking.

I appreciate your offering your kitchen. Is your kitchen suitable for cooking food or baking?

    Terence Seah

  9. To all cooking enthusiasts, the CCs run many cooking and baking classes. The fees are reasonable. I have attended a couple of these organised by Jalan Besar CC and Telok Blangah CC.

  10. Yes, suitable for both. There is a 4-burner stove and a small portable oven.

I can arrange for an Itek Sioh cooking demo if there is interest.

    Nearest MRT is Orchard.

  11. Hi Eleanor, Sounds gong, but what is an Itek Sioh demo? Not familiar with this word.

Glad you offered your place, near Orchard MRT, on last Sat, Aug 2007. The kitchen is suitable for both cooking and baking.

The purpose is to get the cooks & bakers together, not the tasters or learners. There are many learners, but few teachers.

We hope this group can bring together ideas on how to teach cooking and baking, part-time, fulltime or just for fun or for the love of food.

    Morning or aftnn?

    Terence Seah

  12. Hi Terence

Itek Sioh is a Peranakan signature dish which uses duck and a coriander/tamarind-based sauce (rempah). It is different, delectable and uniquely Peranakan.

It looks like we have quite a number of Peranakan cooks in our midst… and quite a few more tasters of their delightful fare.

  13. “Sad is when you get no calls”. Sure?

Well, think again if you get calls at 2.30 a.m. telling you that she cant sleep and asked you to go over without leaving you the address or sending a cab over to pick you up.

Or, like Terence’s expereince, not talking but sounding the gong.

Seriously, food is one area which might take off in SHC’s blue helmet project. Not least, eating is recession proof.

  14. Tim,

Seriously, think about a paradise hideaway twenty miles from the nearest civilisation. You are in it there just the two of you in a nest of secret dreams.

Why do you need a cab? If you are already there, go no further. The past and future is here and now.

I don’t know about gong. But it sure sounds like many people. Loud and meaningless.

And sure. Everybody’s got to eat. Question is whether they need to eat from you. Recession proof? Maybe. Bankrupt proof? No.

Select any food today. You find a similar type offering at the whole spectrum of prices. The holy grail is not a magic dish. The magic is in the marketing of location, context and ambience. F&B is often the side show.

  15. KT,

You’re another soul with 2S ……..substance & sublimity and it’s fun crossing thots with you.

20 miles or 32 km away in the north is taman sentosa or tg balai in the south. Hideaways they certainly are but paradise? Only if one seeks sleaze and a sneeze after sniffing thru the perfumed black-forest.

Despite chanting yr Zen “If you are already there, go no further. The past and future is here and now”, sorie, I still cant fly so she’ll hv to send a cab to fetch me, with midnite charges and call-booking paid.

Gongs are everywhere. Perhaps loud and meaningless but they do add color and variety, and give us more choices.

On food, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. But first, you must hv the pudding.

Whether it ends up with him having a pudding face or puffing away delivery puddings, we still hv to let the adventurous try, and where we can, will support.

  16. Hi Terence/Eleanor,

Its a really good idea to form a team of “teachers” to conduct cooking/baking lessons. They could list down the cuisine they specialise in.

We could have lessons once every month – the whole works like meal with desserts and students pay to cover the costs of ingredients, etc. I would like to participate in this if it is feasible, both as instructor in my specialty and also as a student to learn from others.

    Many thanks.

  17. Phoon Huat conduct baking demo at their shop premises in Hougang, Ang Mo Kio and Jurong almost every day. Used to be restricted to members only but is now opened to public if seats are available. For $10 that you pay, a $10 voucher will be given where you can buy baking ingredients from the shop. Not bad eh!
Those interested can visit the website Phoon Huat.com. to find out the schedule.

For those who are really serious about learning to bake can go to bitc.com.sg. This is a “hands-on” workshop so you would have to pay much more.

  18. Hi Daniel
So sorry to respond so late, but wld like to join the cooking class if it’s not too late.
Do let me know if it’s too late then I’ll join the group at Ubin.
Pls keep me posted on future cooking sessions.

  19. Dear All

I’ve been busy at the office and have not had the opportunity to confirm with my girlfriend on the Iteh Sioh cooking demo. Caroline, you are more than welcome to use my kitchen that day if you wish to share a recipe.

Terence will inform all of you on the date and time of the cooking session.

    Thank you for your patience.

  20. Many thanks Eleanor for graciously allowing me to use your kitchen when I wish to share a recipe. My kitchen is rather small and allows one person to do the cooking and another to assist. Will inform you when the need arises, and will give you ample notice.

    Have a nice day.

  21. Very gracious indeed.

Now if 1 day when I get chased out from where I am presently putting up, heeee, I think I wd be quite safe………………..not thinking of the bed, a kitchen will do for a start……….

  22. Hi Tim,

Really, if that day should come about, I am sure Terence and other SHCians would most certainly billet you in our “akan datang” SHC clubhouse. Because,it is most unbecoming to have SHC’s great sage reduced to a kitchen dweller!

Laughter is always good medicine, thanks for providing us the daily dosage. It truly helps if we are to preserve some sanity living on this island!

    Cheers my man, Edwin Chen

  23. Edwin my dear,

Of cos it’s real………my ex chased me out of the flat which I 90% paid for and Darwin yanked my ears b4 he died to remind that what can happen will happen again.

You’re a good guy and i can count on you for that cage offered to sleep in altho you mis-typed it as “sage”.

Cheers too my man-tor with that bit of menthol for freshness.

    tim
