  1. Hi Tian Soo,

I hope to meet you tonight at Yoga.

Maybe you and your wife can be encouraged to first conduct a tour of your farm for SHC members.

I will be the first to sign up.

    Tks & rgds…………….Jie

  2. Hi,Tian Soo,

I am very interested as I love plants.

However, I am mandarin speaking though my working language is English.

I am quite regular in the walking group. Please
contact me if I fit your requirement.

    Thank you

    Meifoo

  3. Hi Tian Soo,

I know next to zilch about organic farming. Would you think it is a good idea to arrange for a talk cum tour plus tea in your farm, in exchange for a a small fee for SHC members? I would be interested and can volunteer to ferry some members in my car.

This is only my suggestion. Cheers

  4. Hi Charles

Hope the flu bugs have decided to leave your body. Nice to meet you folks at yesterdays lunch.

I don’t think it is ethical for me to organize tours to my farm in this blog.

Anyway, you will be an expert by the time we come back from our Malaysia trip.

  5. Hi Tian Soo,
I’m interested in Charles’ idea of a tour cum talk plus tea at your farm. Please include me if there are plans for one. Thanks.

  6. Tian Soo, I don’t see why it’s unethical. I would consider it an educational tour for SHC members, who might, after that, consider taking up your offer of being a part time guide around your farm.
I had the opportunity to visit the Neo Tiew area a few times, about 2 years ago and realised that it’s the last remnants of a ‘kampong’ atmosphere in Singapore. I haven’t been back since, but heard from the grapevines that it has made some progress in trying to make it an “Edutainment Centre”. At least it’s accessible by bus now.
    Do reconsider.

  7. Hi Tian Soo / Gardening Enthusiasts,

Tian Soo, I am very IMPRESSED with your comprehensive and BEAUTIFUL well- illustrated web page of Organic Farming.

    Just to share,
That really TRIGGERS my WONDERFUL memories of gardening with my ex students of Bedok Town Sec. Sch and Kaki Bukit Sec. Sch where we grown cherry tomatoes, ground nuts, tapiocas ,potatoes and lady fingers.

    1) Gardening is my PASSION.I had abt over 80 potted green and LESS flowering plants at my verandah now in Clementi.

Overlooking the verandah at a distant, you will see The beautiful greenery scenery.

At times, you see kingfishers, yellow humming birds, eagles and lots of long legged birds that look like pelicans flying past your window.

What a HEAVENLY sight! That reminds me of my farm visit in New Zealand. I woke up one morning and saw hundreds of sheep and cows grazing in the green meadows. It looks like I was in PARADISE HEAVEN. If only,I could take this view back to S’pore.

At 10 floors above, I can see lots of NATURAL GREENERY unblocked view of Sunset Way, Bukit Batok and Bukit Timah in the distant unlike my ex-condo at Marine parade, where I am surrounded by CONCRETE JUNGLES of Mandarin Gdns,Bayshore Park and Bedok Town at a distance.

I can grow mostly green non-flowering plants at my verandah.

    Why?

I had a huge lift near my doorstep that BLOCKS most of the strong sunlight and coupled with strong winds,I can grow only a selection of green plants that strive well in this kind of environment.

I used to envy my neighbours nearby my verandah with their FULL exposure to sunlight) , their orchids were blossoming healthily with many stalks of “dancing dolls” hibiscus, roses, pandan leaves, fragrant water plum ( swey mui ) mint leaves etc.and I always go over to ADMIRE her plants and share gardening tips with one another.

For Bougainvilleas and Portulacas ( Japanese mini roses ),to flower abundance of strong sunlight is needed. Alas my place does NOT have this plus factor ie FULL sunlight unlike my ex condo at Marine Parade. I used to ADMIRE my beautiful bougainvilleas of various colours and varieties perching over my wide spaced balcony and my hanging pots of beautiful blossoms of Portulacas of different colours ,bird nest fern, money plants, maiden hair ferns etc…

My ex boss who was so impressed with my green fingers often ask me.

Do I TALK to plants ?

I told him NO but I ADMIRE my plants and tell them how beautiful and healthy they were and the more, I admire them, the more they respond by giving me more blossoms that elevates my mood.

And from my own experimental research besides nutrition and daily maintenance I found out that even plants need POSITIVE STROKES now and then just like human beings.)

I took up Botany in my University days and had been a teacher in charge of gardening club in Bedok Town Sec. School and other schools for many yrs.

I ENJOY imparting my gardening skills to my students.

We once had a “green house”. The idea was mooted by my ex-Principal, Mr. Koh Boon Long, a sincere and warm boss whom I enjoy working with and still had lots to LEARN from him.

He has been very supportive of my gardening creative ideas to transform the school to a more beautiful enviroment for all to enjoy and work in. That was one of the greatest pleasures of my life.

At the green house I divided plots of “land” for my students in my Gardening Club to plant cherry tomatoes.

I instill more FUN into their planting activity by turning it into a competition and which group that had the MOST number of points awarded will be the CHAMPION group for growing cherry tomatoes amongst the 6 grps.

After abt 1 month when the cherry tomato plants started to mature and fruit, I gave them another 3 more months for them to nurture them.

I set a dateline and told them that I will award them with a point system to decide who will be the champion grp.

On that particular day when the comptn ends, I will count the number of leaves found infested in their plot of land with pest/fungi I will deduct a penalty point. (-1) point.

For each cherry tomato fruit measuring at least 2cm.long, I award them with 5 points.

They were so ENTHUSIASTIC abt this competn that they took the trouble to come to school earlier than usual and watered their plants before going to class. These was told by some of my ex -teaching colleagues. I felt very happy for them to be so enthusiastic. 1/2 the battle was won.

I could see them full of enthusiasm bubbling with energy coming out of their expressions and faces. It was a great JOY to see them smiling and talking happily over how many cherry tomatoes fruits their plants were bearing in their plot of land.

At the end of the competn,I told them to harvest all the cherry tomatoes and place them in a basket for all to SHARE and EAT.

And the 1st.3 groups were presented with prizes from the Principal during our afternoon assembly period to gave the students a sense of RECOGNITION, SELF ESTEEM and WORTHINESS.

Most of my intake of Gardening students are from the Normal Tech Stream (very unmotivated towards studies, with short time span and memory, discipline problems, bo-chap attiture etc..)mostly coming from single parent families or from a “poorer” homebackgrd.

Surprisingly, most N tech students are better at HAND than STUDIES.

I want them to realise that they too can be PROUD of themselves to be “somebody” ( doctors, engineers ,teachers etc,,)one day if they choose to.

I often advise my Normal Tech students NOT to harbour and labelled themselves with the I.T.E. mentality.
    (Its The End )
so why learn ? made well-known in our local movie “I NOT stupid.”

  8. Hi Tian Soo,

I am working now voluntarily for RSVP from Mon to Fri in 2 primary schs.

Since 1/2 day is needed, can you pls. give me the time you will need me as a guide and training on Sat and Sun only so as not to clash with some of our SHC events which I would like to participate ?

    Thank you.

  9. Hi Tian Soo @#8

Just do a civic duty for all SHCians.

No need to be concerned with “ethical” reasons, so long you are not soliciting direct business. Your regular revenues and financial contributions are your output, that settles the issue.

If there are costs to be shared/borne just mention it upfront and move on.

Hope you are encouraged to set the balls rolling. Will help you if needs be.

    Cheers,

  10. Hi Tian Soo,

I would act as a volunteer to ORGANISE exclusively for SHC members on an Adhoc basis a Guided Educational SHC Tour to visit your Organic Farm .

I will set up a new post and collect their money by electronic transfer into my account for the tour which will I need you to help us to charter a bus or give me a contact number of reliable chartered buses . Max 40 pax. If less than 20,we charted a van.

From the no of those who register at the post ,we can make a survey of how many interested to join.

Let me know the price of the tour cum chartered bus per pax and I will pay you CASH when I see you at your farm.

This will save you the hassle of collecting money from them as I know you are very busy at work.

Perhaps we can discuss more details at the Kopitiam after our yoga lesson at BLCC next Wed.

Pls. let me know ASAP. I am sure many SHCians are interested including myself,Ron lai,Alice,Mary Chan ,Charles ,Alice Seah etc…

    2) I will be discussing with my supervisor to conduct organic farm edu tours to your farm too for my primary sch children as part of our enrichment activity.

I cannot promise at this moment as he had to look at the budget alloted by the school.

    Pls let me know ASAP.
    Thank you.

  11. Hi, Steven:

    An excellent suggestion!

I appreciate Tian Soo’s ethical concerns, which you have removed by volunteering to organise the outing to his organic farm.

Thanks for volunteering. Please count my wife and I in for the excursion.

    Ron Koh

  12. Hi Ron Koh,

I have NOT put my post yet on the SHC Organic Farm conducted tour yet and you had already “chope” 2 places.

    Thanks for your ENTHUSIASM.

I STRONGLY believe this tour can take off as quite a number may not have visit a conducted tour of organic farms or enjoy going again to see the “BEAUTY” of nature at work!

    SC

  13. Steven,
A suggestion. Perhaps you could also include some of the other ‘farms’ or places like “Bollywood Veges” or the fish farm by “Kenny the Fish” or some flower gardens?
When I was last in that area, I had a great time identifying the roadside fruit trees which had been intentionally planted and labelled for the public. It’s an interesting place, but quite sprawling, so transport like a chartered bus or cars will be necessary.

  14. Steven, forgot to mention the mushroom farm and wheatgrass farm too. There are dairy farms and frog farmstoo. Forgot their names though, but they are all in the area.

  15. Hi Tian Soo/Steven

I would like to visit the farm too. I have brought this up with some SHC members before Tian Soo was a member.

I thought Bollywood veges is Tian Soo’s farm or am I mistaken.

Please include me cos I have been waiting for a long time for this kind of group outing.

I can be a part time tour guide on Sat and Sun as I am still working.

I used to work for Singtel in the PR department where I conduct visits to the various SingTel facilities for students and various organisations.

Oh another thing. I enjoy my veggies :)
Hope I score extra points for this.

Please let me know if you think I fit the bill.

    Many thanks.

  16. Hi Tian Soo

Is nice meeting you at MARY’S KAFE,SCWO Ctr, Waterloo St, yesterday for the Eurasian lunch date with Andrew Kuan, Dennis Wee, Charles Chua,Alan Bok with my wife Alice and not forgetting Kenneth. It was a nice lunch experience with the assorted dilicious dishes dished out by Mary, plus the “Aipong Bokua” dipped with banana sauce (partly Pernanakan style).

Alice and I have been to your area at Neo Tiew Rd a couple of time to visit the nurseries and Sungei Tengah area to visit the fish farm of Qian Hui, and at the same time visited Poison Ivy farm but have not been to your organic farm, it will be a good experience for SHCians to gain educational value and at the same time to taste organic vegetables from your farm.

    RonLai

  17. Good afternoon, Tian Soo
Though having no thorough knowledge of vegetables and plants, I’m quite keen to learn and be a part-time guide at your farm. I like talking and interacting with people, both young and old.

I live in Tampines, Street 71 and shall be pleased to catch a lift in someone’s car to the farm. I can be contacted on H/P No.9-8219281.
    Regards
    Frank Kaw

  18. Hi all,

I’ve gone to the website. Now I know more about Bollywood Veggies and Poison Ivy Bistro.

Very nice pictures. Would like to see the real thing. So Steven????

  19. Thanks for the clarification Angela. Made a boo boo huh?

Blur as a sotong. Tian Soo must be laughing at my mix up. Actually he got the same surname as the other owner so I thought they were one and the same.

My apologies Tian Soo for the blunder. Must read from top to bottom and not top and bottom.

    Warmest Regards

  20. Hi Meifoo @6,

In case I am misunderstood, my voluntary ferry service is only from the nearest public transport (say MRT stn) to the farm. I did not mean fetching people from their homes to the farm. Let me check out where the nearest MRT is.

Also Steven might be arranging for a bus, depending on the cost and availability, so we shall see.

    Hi Andrew K @7,

    I thought you drive too?

    Hi Tian Soo @8,

Thanks for well wishes. They worked. I slept for more than 10 hours y’day and the aching is mostly gone and I feel much better. Still have some stiffness and a headache. Well 1 out of 3 is still good.

I don’t think you have to worry about ethical behaviour here as I think you are an ethical person, so no worries. I still think a tea with some fruits would be a good idea and healthy for all and perhaps you could work it into the outing, otherwise it would not be fair to impose such a big group on you.

Whatever the outcome of Steven’s attempt with chartering the bus, my offer to the group still stands and I can ferry those who do not have transport. I will check out the nearest MRT stn later. Which is the nearest?

Whatever the outcome you must agree there is a lot of interest in your farm and in organic food (whichever may primary), and I hope this tour will come to bear fruits for everyone.

    Cheers

  21. Hi Madame Marie Chan,

One step at a time lor!

Have not even visited Tian Soo’s organic farm yet and you are into mushroom and frog farms. Let’s see how things work out with Tian soo before I start the post.

    Marn marn lai, ok?
Btw, thanks for your fresh ideas.

  22. Hi Tian Soo

Thanks for the posting. I am interested and can we discuss next Wed. after yoga class.

Mike Tan (thru Alicia Soh’s email)

  23. Steven,
Marie Chan? It has been a long time since someone called me that. ;-) That is I assume you mean me ya?

I thought since we will be going that way, we might as well see something more instead of just one place lor.

  24. This is what I would love to do whn I retire…will keep the website address safely in my closet, to open up whn I retire. Meanwhile I pray that the farm will still be around whn I retire :-))) So you folks, pls pass the word around so that more people will visit the farm to keep it going :-)))

  25. Hi Ron Wie,

…I see the start of your 2nd career, let me know if you want Lim’s farm anytime.

I take over and you do all the maintenance of the plants and vegetables. OK ? Ai mai? LOL

  26. Hi, Charles@29

I took up the offer you made @4. This is before Steven’s initiative to organise it for SHC members.

I hope Steven already count me in for the farm tour.Pl refer to comment @28.

    Thanks and Regards

    Meifoo

  27. Hi Steven,

@35 “if you want Lim’s farm” should have type “if you want to visit/stay Lim’s Farm” but while taking breakfast and listening to news at the same time. I will be happy to join you once you have arranged with Lim.

Sorry for the typo and hope not to disturb Lim in his peaceful retreat which he is sharing a little with us, with this unintentional remark. Cheers

  28. Tian Soo, Appreciate the opportunity. Love plants and welcome the chance to learn more about them. Please include me in the training. Thank you

  31. Hi Tian Soo

After our eurasian food lunch at Mary’s Kafe last Wednesday, we (Andrew Kuan, Alan n Ann Bok, Alice and myself) have the opportunity to meet you again today for a visit to your organic farm at Neo Tiew Rd.

We appreciate very much of your time taken to guide us artound the farm, giving us the true meaning of organic farming, the certain soil requirements and the needs to observe natures way of preservations. All the time we have the thought to think that any plant being attacked by pests, we should destroy the pests concerned, but not in organic way of farming. The various plants that we came across in your farm, really enriched us the knowledge of green vegetations.

Thank you, once again, for a lovely visit and sharing your knowledge, we will definitely share the same with our fellow SHCians.

    RonLai

  32. Hi Steven & Tian Soo

I am a plant lover and would like to join the farm tour to be organised.

Steven – I also keep a lot of green plants at home, if there is any chance, I would like to visit your greenery balcony and learn from you how to make the plants survive longer time.

    Annie Loh

  33. Hi Annie Loh/other plant lovers,

….I would like to visit your greenery balcony and learn from you how to make the plants survive longer time.

Sure why not,you are most welcome to visit my home with other plant lovers.

Pls. let me know in advance when you can make it. And I am more than HAPPY to share my gardening tips with you at my home and verandah.
    My email add is sfc0007@yahoo.com.sg

Btw, our SHC friends, Robert,Kristy,Ron Lai,Alice,Ann Bok and Alan had visited me too.

    SC

  34. Hi Tian Soo #8,

I think you have a very inspiring activity to attract SHCians. It is an excellent idea for you to organise visits to your organic farm. Feel free to go ahead. I am sure you can find many friends and helpers too.

And, for other SHCians who have their own business or own projects, I encourage you to share us with other members here. The more entrepreneur you are, the more we will support.

Perhaps, it may be a good idea to host a SHC monthly gathering at your farm. I suggest you decide a date (one date and one time). And we will go for that date. It can be in May.

  35. Hi Steven & all plant/veggie lovers,

I had not login to read individual posts for awhile.. wow! many enthusiasts.

FYI, I had researched Kranji Countryside whenever time permits. On 15Mar08 I had explored the Kranji Countryside where most of the farms are (a little nostalgia for kampong days) It was a morning well spent! Visited Bollywood had a chat with Ivy Singh-Lim over organic coffee. She is the President of Kranji Countryside Asso. There are about 12 Farmpreneurs(members) excludes Sungei Buloh (one of my next target). Due to various reasons, it was rather difficult to maintain what they have set to do “offer KCA as an alternative venue for recreational and educational purposes both for locals and visitor”.

I had set apart the date 12Jul08 for the visit to her farm as our Walk for the Month of Jul08,lunch+conducted tour of a fraction of her farm(at a nominal price); Bollywood is 10acres! more than enough to walk ;)

It is not possible to walk from 1 farm to another mainly because the road is too narrow, not made for walking esp for a big group.

From Kranji MRT there is an hourly shuttle-bus by Bus-Plus, seating capacity less than 20pple. Sat+Sun there are many visitors taking the bus. Also it is very time consuming as each time you drop off at 1 farm and u miss the hour, you wait another hour. I spent 4 hours there & manage to visit Bollywood, Hay Dairies and completed 1 round trip on the bus :D

I have made some enquiries with some transport companies. A couple of them has responded. Steven, I can pass these to you as well as the info I have of Kranji (it will save time for you to extract, how’s dat?) I believe you would have more time to organize it. How about joining the Monthly Walk as 1 of the leaders?

I am extremely tied up with work and also with personal matters, so I am squeezed for time. Hence, contemplate to withdraw from the walk team. Each walk I conduct eg., Botanical Gdns, Fort Canning & Mt Faber, I do much research…. I love nature but I do not have your deep knowledge…. we welcome you to join the Walk group :D

Also, had spoke with William the owner of Farm Mart and had planned to visit them last Sat but I have immediate matters to attend to that day..the next weeks, too; William also conducts walk tours commercially. From Choa Chu Kang MRT there is also a shuttle bus to Farm Mart.

    jus sharing…

    ChristinaCL Chan

  36. Tian Soo,

Why don’t you consider selling your farm produce at the SHC flea market? We have refrigeration. You can consider packing higher value added salad packs.

Members interested in selling organic meals can also join in.

  37. KT

Need a cold room (container size) lah to be commercially viable !

When we were there, Tian Soo’s wife was extremely busy with fulfilling on-line orders.

    Cheers,

  38. Hi All

Thanks for all the enthusiasm on the farm and good business suggession.

I post this thread to get helping hand so that I can have more time to relax and join you folks for FUN. Give me more enjoyment ideas not business/work.

If I sound not very business savy it is because this farm is set up not for profit. We are just a strange couple who enjoys rustic life and have a social cause.

I will leave it to Steven Chan to organize the visit.

Many thanks to those who have indicate interest in the job. I’ll be in touch with you directly.

  39. Tian Soo, my apologies. I didn’t intend my comments to put any pressure on you.

I understand where you are coming from. We are all at the stage when the quality of life is much more important than work.

It’s great that you are able to enjoy a rustic life and have a social cause too.

I hope to visit your farm one day.

  40. Dear Tian Soo

In continuing with Ron Lai’s compliments at# 43, may I thank you also for your fine hospitality and patience on Friday morning.

I admire your decision and courage to live a different life-style in Singapore after working for many years as a professional Chartered Accountant.

A rustic and “smelling flowers and nature” life-style daily.

Look forward to our 7-day pleasant and relaxing journey together up North in June.

Alan Bok confirms that he likes to come along too, a foursome. We will discuss at greater length on 14 June. See ya.

    Warmest regards

  41. Hi Robert

Thanks for your help in putting up the pics.

RonK, as you have mentioned that pics taken should include scenes of the surroundings rather the faces of SHCians, here they are,
other shots of flowers n fauna will try to put up late.

    RonLai

  42. Thank you, Robert, well done with your posting skills.

Awaiting, the second series at Poison Ivy farm, that complete the entire two farms visiting at Lim Chu Kang last Friday, 9 May.

    Beautiful.

    Warmest regards

  43. Hi, RonLai@ #55:

No, no, no: Not “scenes of the surroundings rather then faces of SHCians”, but SOME scenes of the surroundings, and NOT only photos focused on SHCians.

Thanks for the nice photos. I bet quite a few SHCians have not seen a dragon fruit plant before. Now they know where to go to see one up close.

    Cheers,

    Ron

  44. Dear Ron

Pictures as a grouping quite well balanced for our farm outing : people involved, surroundings and sceneries.

Many thanks to Robert for using his skills to post.

    Cheers,

  45. Hi Ron & Andrew,

Sorry, I still can’t find the email Ron sent me regarding the 2nd batch of photos on your visit to Poison Ivy’s farm tour. Kindly send the photos to me again please.

    Robert

  46. Hi Ron Lai

Over to you please for Poison Ivy pixs.

Just came back from CSC’s 3Bars. Wow, there were a dozen of accomplished well trained singers.

Was told also there are dozens of accomplished ballroom and classic dancers. Saw advg of my former taichi friend and Shawn & Gladys teaching adv ballroom dancing too.

Look like we can organise another outing to CSC in June and hear the high std singing and possibly join in the excellent weekly dancing too.

  47. Hi AndrewK & Robert

Photos of Bollywood Veggie/Ivy Sing-Lim’s Poison Ivy sent to you twice, yesterday and day B4 yesterday. Day B4 yesterday e-mail with attachments should have been received by Robert, but saying not received. THANKS for giving us an orientation tour of ECO ORGANIC farm. They are some SHCians who have shown some interest in your farm.

Perhaps, I will get some feedback of their responses first before I will go ahead to plan a visit. And members will also have HANDS-ON experiences at your farm.

Definitely, NOT meddling with the Earthworms. Ha! Ha!

At least,I am given a 1st.hand experience of touching an unripe “dragon” fruit still dangling from the cactus plant.
And what exactly is a “sponge” gourd and how it is formed. Can also buy from Body shop while Tian Soo can harvest them from his creeper plt. That stinking NEEM fruit good for cosmetic purposes. And how to identify a Citronella plt from a Lemon Grass plt. Both of them looks v.alike.

And one thing that strikes me is your ” PASSION FRUIT ??? ” tree where NO flowers are found on the trunk and branches and yet it bears hundreds of small delicious sweet tasting fruits on its main stem and side branches …..INCREDIBLE!
Never know that your raw ORGANIC “ladies finger” fruit has a sweet taste and v.crunchy unlike the wet market/spermarkt NON organic ones.

Home-made Red Mint Tea prepared by your wife for relieving sore throat has a pleasant tea-like taste but Red Mint is not a tree plt .

Your wife, Evelyn is one of the pioneers of Nature Lovers in Spore who has garnered lots of support from the community to conserve our green environment.

Lastly, how to identify a more expensive ORGANIC vegetable
(from a less costly NON-Organic one. And many others etc…
