USEFUL TIPS

I have in mind for members to share a range of useful tips that SHC  members can find useful. No I am not talking about horse racing, soccer tips(which are my areas of interest)

An example is that my mother says when I do the washing I must  be turn the clothing inside out, zippers must be zipped up and buttons unbuttoned. How many of you out there who does not do it this way please own up and share how this advice has proven useful.

I have 3 travel tips to share ; when traveling always take the name card of the hotel when you go out as taxi drivers have a bad habit of sending you to the wrong hotel and then apologise profusely for hearing wrongly. With the card and name of the hotel written in the local language they will have less excuse of doing so.

The other tip when taking the MRT , METRO, MTR , the TUBE or the UNDERGROUND especially if the language is foreign as in France is to look for the end station when changing lines and not look for directions for the station you intend to go to.For example when going to Dover when coming from the airport do not look for directions to Dover but look for directions to Boon Lay,Of course you need a station guide or map as well!

Another tip is to learn a few useful phrases in the local language eg in France "ou er de toilette?(where is the toilet? How much? Where is the —— ?

If you are a sushi fan please take note that certain outlets(not restaurants) offer a 50% discount 30 mins before closing time.

I used to leave my battery in my laptop even when I was using the power plug connection. Now I know that u should remove the battery when using the power connection. You should also drain the battery as much as possible if u use the battery. In this way your battery life will be much longer.

When I find my notes I will share how certain stains are removed.

Members  can also  share survival tips ,camping tips cooking tips, how to get nice phone numbers without paying extra like 93833883 or 96998511,tips on weight reduction, how to stave of the onset of  wrinkles, special diet or healthy food programmes, cosmetic tips, travel tips, foodie tips on where the best is for certain types for certain types of food, how to travel with children, investment tips, business tips, where to get bargains, household tips, how to keep food fresh for a longer period  in the fridge, how to make things last longer, where to buy the best durians or where to get tasteful durians at decent prices, how to cut down your handphone bills when overseas.I cant possibly cover every subject so I leave it to members to create new ideas

Tips can also be negative: how to avoid getting ripped off,how to avoid bad situations, share bad experiences or knowledge of bad experiences so members can avoid falling into the same traps.

One tip when buying a car or something similar make sure before you sign  read the receipt  or contract as to whether it includes the GST or excludesand state so clearly. One conman try to con my friend out of an extra GST payment after the deposit was paid.Luckily she got out of a tight spot when I advise her to call their bluff as the road tax was expiring soon and they backed off.

Let this post also be an avenue for members to get advice on issues not related to friendships and relationships or personal issues.(this we can cover in another agony uncle post that I might initiate soon). So if you have a non personal problem or dilemna you can ask fellow members for advice!Caveat Emptor clause applies…use it at your own discretion.

I hope SHC members are willing to share and sometimes in the process embarass themselves(you can always say you were told by a friend…) and help each other by sharing our wealth of Silverhairs experience.

Illuminate each other with your glow , light the candle  and lift the darkness upon us!

NO MATTER HOW OLD WE ARE WE CAN NEVER STOP LEARNING PEARLS OF WISDOM!

  1. Hi All,

Would like to share another important travel tip.
Check out the locations of EXITS such as staircase for emergency purpose eg….Fire

    bbc

  2. Hi,

Further to Catherine #1, I don’t know about the rest, but for me, whenever I am overseas, I would ask for rooms at lower level of a hotel just in case if there is an emergency, it’s so much faster to rush down than those staying at higher level. Can you imagine yourself jostling with other guests, rushing down from the 23rd or 25th floor of a hotel?

  3. Ref #2 Stella Wee .Her advice is certainly useful to those so inclined and don’t mind forgoing the higher floor with a panaromic view(you can’t have both).

request for rooms not higher than level 6 as this the maximum height that standard fire rescue ladders can reach.

As ref#1 Catherine Lee has pointed out.It is more important to note where the fire emergency exit
(especially the nearest to your room)door or staircase is in relation to your room.

If you have older folks who can’t walk too much you can request rooms near the elevators provided they don’t mind the higher noise level that goes with it.When flying ask travel agencies to book seats in foward areas and near the toilets if they need to go to the toilet often.

For large groups you can request(no guarantee they will do so but they will at least try) for rooms on the same level
and for family groups even adjoining or at least adjacent rooms. Hope members find these tips useful!

  4. “Always bring a small powerful torchlight, and put beside the bed in the hotel. It’s needed…….”

Yes, women who travel alone do bring with them a torch for the need, so I was told and so it’s confirmed here.

Guys, what do we bring on lonesome nites away from home?

  5. Hahaha, age is catching up with me, I forget of my cannon or is it that it’s so limp that it’s only a mere dangling appendage which pleases neither angel nor angie?

  6. I would recommend when choosing an e-mail address avoid using the underscore as part of your e-mail address. The reason being when a travel agency sends your e-ticket or itinerary he will have difficulty keying in the underscore direct from the Abacus computer and he has to send to an email address before fowarding it again.

  7. Anybody knows how to remove ball point ink stains other than by the usual way of soap and water?

In general when removing any stain stretch the stain area over an embroidery hoop. The fabric is held taut and the stain can be removed much more easily.

Firstly saturate the stain with hairspray and let it dry before washing. If any stains remain , repaeat the procedure.

I have found some old course notes regarding removal of stains in general including fascinating ones like lipstick stains and shirt collar rings from one of my lady friends who attended the flight stewardess course. I will try to input from time to time and If I can manage once a week I will try my best to do so if my schedule permits. Do drop a line if you are in a hurry to cope with a type of stain that you may find particularly difficult and I will try to locate the answer.

Some of the other topics include washing machine clean up, iron clean up and how to prevent white garments from turning yellow.

Anybody else who might have intersting tips please do share with us

  8. I dont know where Steven aked the question from but my answer may disappoint as it pertains more to prevention. The solution on storing of white garments …to avoid yellowing do store them in blue plastic bags…should work but have not tried it personally…anybody can confrim?

To compensate I shall give you solutions to other problems…do post under this posting …easier for me to track.

SHIRT COLLAR RINGS…rub white chalk on the grease ring before you put the shirt in the hamper. The chalk will absorb the grease and will wash out in the laundry.

LIPSTICK STAINS…(useful for naughty guys…ha ha ha)should be rubbed with petroleum jelly(if you use KY jelly don’t blame me…ha ha ha) before laundering. the lipstick will disappear.

GREASE STAINS…sprinkle with talcum powder. Let the powder absorb the grease, then brush off. The grease will be removed with the powder.

WASHING MACHINE CLEAN UP…run your wasing machine through the comp[lete cycle with warm water and add a gallon of distilled vinegar. The vinegar will unclog hoses and drain pipes that are built up with soap scum.

IRON CLEAN – UP…***TAKE NOTE TEFLON IRONS NOT INCLUDED…use baking soda. Sprinkle it on and rub it with a moist cloth, as you would with a scouring powder. For stubborn stains, iron some salt sprinkled on a piece of brown(not clear what the brown paper is perhaps do they mean sand paper?)paper with a cold iron. Then set the iron on a low temperature and iron a piece of waxed paper.

OUT OF THE DRYER WRINKLES…if clothes are left in the dryer too long and they are nothing but a mass of wrikles, toss them backin the dryer with a damp bath towel. Let the dryer run for about 5 minutes, until the wrikles have disappeared. Remove the clothes immediately, or the wrinkles will return.

Frankly I have zero experience on these solutions but have faced the same problems before…please feedback if it works or if you know how to clear yellowish stains on white garments do share with Steven the solution. If you have other solutions that work do share with us.
