General Info on Line Dancing

The following is a reply to enquiries posted in the Line Dancing comments which I thought might be informative for all by posting it here in the General Forum.

Dear Sadliu and Onlysue,

Practically all CCs conduct line-dancing classes from elementary to advance level.

SHC line dancers congregate at 2 venues that I know of :

1) Sat. public dancing at Far East Square, China St. from 7 to 10.30pm

2) Wed. Practice sessions at rooftop of Blk.146A Toa Payoh (opp. HDB Hub) from 7.15pm onwards.

At the moment, SHC line dancers are working hard at these 2 venues in preparation to perform for the SHC Annual D&D on 24 Mar.

Make your way to any of these venues and you will meet the SHC line dancers.

In general:
It is easier for line dancers to pick up social dance than for social dancers to pick up line dancing.  The reason :  line dance steps incorporate steps from other forms of dancing such as cha cha, sambal, rumba, latin, broadway, jazz, waltz, etc.  Line dance step comprises a set of 8 counts versus 4 in other forms of dancing.  A simple line dance ususally have a minimum of 32 counts.

How fast one picks up line dancing depend very much on the individual.  Some are ‘natural’ dancers, some work hard to achieve, some just go with the flow.  Whatever the case might be, one thing for sure – line dancers will keep their body and mind healthy because it is not just physical exercise, but brain work as well.

Caution :
Some line dancers stressed themselves out by trying too hard to "master" every dance.  In the end, they get ‘burned out’.  One should try one’s best within one’s limit so that one can enjoy the music as well as the pleasure of dancing.

You can check out the following websites as well :

All are welcome.  Hope you can come join in the fun as well.! emoticon

March BT Reserve Brisk Walk

Dear SHC members
Gong Xi, Gong Xi Fa Cai.
March is around the corner and we will resume our monthly walk.

Start Time: We start the walk at 4.30pm.  No delay as we have to be out before it gets dark.
Meeting point: Visitor Centre, Hindhede Drive
Getting there: By bus. 67, 75, 170, 171, 173, 184, 852, 961.  Alight at Upper Bukit Timah Rd, opposite Bukit Timah Shopping Centre (after Beauty World Centre/Plaza).  Donot cross the overhead pedestrian bridge to Bukit Timah Shopping Centre.  Instead walk towards Courts (follow the direction of traffic) and cross at Courts to Hindhede Rd.  "Raintree Condo" under construction just at the entrance of Hindhede Rd.   From Hindhede Rd, turn  into Hindhede Drive and you will see Visitor Centre. 10-15 min walk.

By MRT.  At Newton Stn, take Tibs 171 and at Clementi Stn take 184 (loop service)
By Car.  Fr city to Woodlands.  Turn right at pedestrian bridge nr Courts along Upper Bukit Timah Rd and into Hindhede Rd/Drive.  Parking Free.   Parking available at Beauty World which has an overhead pedestrian crossing leading directly out of the carpark.

The Walk:  Early birds can view the exhibits at the Visitor Centre before the Walk.  We can take the hard road trail or the South View Path trail into the foliage to reach the summit.  Part of the path is closed because of landslide in December.  You may have to climb more than 150 steps to the Summit.  Total time taken: 1 to 2  hr.   For those who cannot take slopes/climbs,  pl consult your family Doctor for advice.  For your info  :                                                                           840 flowering plants and over 500 species of animals.  Donot feed the monkeys.  Whichever trails, we take, the place is very shady.  As usual, bring umbrellas/ponchos in case rain, water bottle.                                                                                                                                                                        Dinner:   Available at the shophouses opposite Courts (the other side of Courts).
Additional Points: We need the walk to shed off extra kg accumulated during the lunar New Year.  An opportunity for those who have registered for the D&D in March to meet and cultivate friendship to brace up for the occasion.  For first timers who wish to join the walk and need more info, leave a comment here, and I shall reply you.  Hope to see you all.    Veronica Wong

How we can fulfill the SilverHairsClub’s objective in 2007?

SilverHairsClub’s key objective is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new friends.  Our group is diversed and growing.  Having participate in some of our events, please share with us your thoughts on how can further meet this objective.

If, so far, you have not participated in our activities, I am eagerly looking forward to hearing from you too.

Twenty Good Summers

Hi all SHC members

Yes, I’ve been reading Twenty Good Summers by Martin Hawes and it’s basically a book about financial planning and retirement (lifestyle change). But it’s also a book that addresses the needs and concerns of those reaching their 50s. We often come to realise that we need to radically make a change in our lives when we come to the milestone ages of 40, 50 or 60. For me, it’s coming to 60, the BIG SIX ZERO! So, technically, I only have ten good summers left… a sobering and humbling thought. But take heart, there is more to it then just sitting and moping and doing nothing. One way to make a difference in our lives is through our SHC participation and sharing. I thank our founder and members for their unstinting support and friendship.

Let me just share the final paragraphs of Martin’s book:

"There is still time to do all the things you have always wanted ‘if you act firmly and decisively. There is not time for wishing, waiting and hoping though. You have to cut to the chase and start living the life you have always wanted.

If you are not going to have some good summers now, when are you going to have them? This is a serious question – you are never going to be fitter or more capable than you are now; you are never going to be in a better position to enjoy your life than you are now; you will never enjoy your time as much as you will now. If your life is not what you want it to be, change it. This may mean doing something quite radical, something that may raise the eyebrows of oyour family and friends. But it is your life – the only one you are likely to have in this world at least – so get on with doing what you want. If there was ever a time to do the things you have always wanted to do, this is it. It’s time to make every summer count."

For SilverHairs who are comfortable with online chat, and not able to join the gatherings

There many many SHC members whom we have not met.  Some are shy, while others find our gathering timings not suitable.  Some live in Jurong, while others live in Chua Choa Kang.  Many SilverHairs are wondering how to meet other SilverHairs, and yet unable to benefit from the convenience of MRT and buses.  Dont give up, we are looking for places in North, East and West of Singapore island. You can help out.

Early last year, we tried web-chat, and we were partially sucessful.  For all SHC members, who are unable to join the physical gatherings, let’s meet online.

For how to, please click here.  Please contact Vishal at vishal@silverhairsclub.com, if you wish to have a practice/trial.

The date:  Sat, Mar 17, 1400 – 1600 hrs. . To register, simply add your name here.

Happy New Year to all SilverHairs

On behalf of the founders of the SilverHairsClub, I would take this occasion to wish all SilverHairs a Happy and prosperous Lunar New Year.

You may not hear it, but the fireworks have started.  The kids are putting tin cans over small crackers placed in the ground.  Long strings of red crackers are hung across the front of the houses, ready for the seniors to lit.  Everybody dresses in red, pony tails for the kids.  Lots of loud voices, running around.  A grand reunion dinner awaits generations of families this lunar new year eve.

To many good years ahead.

SilverHairsClub 07 Feb gathering photos

SilverHairsClub Feb gathering photos are out.  Over 40 participants attended, full house, but place was too small.  Guess we cannot use this place anymore.

After the monthly gathering, some SilverHairs crazily and last minute decided to go to Outram MRT market for Lo Hei and supper.  Guess too hungry after 8pm.  Here are the photos.

Playing the keyboard/Singing karaoke songs

I know how to play a handful of simple tunes on the Yamaha keyboard and I am interested to take up lessons to increase my repertoire of songs.

I am also wanting to master a handful of English karaoke songs so that when I go for karaoke sessions, I don’t have to just listen while others sing.

Does anyone know of willing and able teachers?

Thanks for reading my post.

Do you know of a small restaurant?

Do you know of a small restaurant which meets the following specifications?

  1. The place feels nice to you, has a history or nostalgic, has no white paint on the walls.
  2. Size-wise, it should be small and able to handle 50 people.
  3. Location-wise, it can be located anywhere in Singapore, somewhere in Jurong, Chua Chu Kang, ChinaTown, nearby islands, Batam or Johore.  For a change, the place can be difficult to find.  Can be under the trees, facing the sea or the river.
  4. Price-wise, it’s important not to be expensive. not city prices, less than SGD 10 person Nett, incl tea.
  5. Table & chairs, can be old, clean, comfortable to our bony bottoms. No white table cloth.
  6. Food-wise, can be porridge, tim-sum, soups, surgarfree dishes, no oil all over the bottom of plate, nothing is covered in flour, and where you can recognise the meat without tossing the dish around.
  7. Mood-wise, we can sit down and chat as long as we like.  And, some strong SilverHairs relationship among us.

Do you know of such a place? Is there such a place in Singapore?  We like to go there this year.
