Looking for travel buddy/buddies to Cebu/Bohol on Dec 2 -7, 2012

Tiger Airways having an offer of a round trip of $171 ++ to Cebu,
Phillipines. Cebu has a rich historical heritage as Ferdinand Megallan landed on
Phillipines in 1521. There is also a vibrant nightlife in Cebu.

We can go to the neighbouring island of Bohol to see the National Geographic
Monument called The Chocolate Hills by express ferry Super Cat or Ocean Jet.
Hotels average about $30-40 Sing and guesthouse at $24 per air-con room in the
heart of Cebu City. The people are friendly and best of all, most of them speak
English.

Worth going due to cheap flight and favourable exchange rate of 1000
peso ~ $30 Sing dollars.

Flights leave Singapore on Sun Dec 2 or Mon Dec 3 and return to
Singapore on Friday Dec 7.

Please email me at laurawee@hotmail.com if you are keen to
join me.

Thank you.

Preparing For Dementia/Alzheimer Disease

Last night i watch and listen to a health and development specialist talking on how she’s preparing to get Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), a genetically transmitted disease.

She talked about her dad, a college professor, who started showing dementia about 12 years ago and was officially diagnosed in 2005. Being sickly her dad needs help eating, getting dressed and not knowing where he is. She said that out of fear of getting AD we tend to either go into denial or decide to do everything in preventing dementia.

She actually have had been doing what researcher suggested: Eating right, excercise daily and keeping her mind active. But according to her, research also shows that nothing will be 100 percent protecting us from getting AD. From her experience taking care of her father and researching what it’s like to live with dementia, she decided to choose on focusing three things.

Watch and listen to her 6 minutes speech at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv79SgT4O1k&feature=plcp

What promted me to listen is that i never read or hear anyone talk about preparing for alzheimer/dementia. Mostly is on prevention. Is she thinking out of the box?

What are your thoughts?

Stay Healthy! Be Happy! :)

P/S: Anyone can also share your thoughts via my email at: powjohnny@yahoo.com

Monthly walk: Coastal Changi, our very own!

Due to unforseen circumstances, we are not going to Bukit Batok Nature Reserve, the walk route has been

changed!

***** The route is not Changi Village or Changi Point!   We go the opposite direction *****

Flat Roads, Shady Trees and Planes……… we shall tread and view!

Date                          :      Saturday,  10th November, 2012

Time                          :       4.15pm  "sharp"    (2.5 to 3hours)

Meet/Start Place       :    Tampines Bus Interchange, BERTH 9, we shall board Bus Service# 19, together.

Getting There            :    Nearest MRT: Tampines MRT (EW2)

Makan place              :
Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal "TMFT"- has a small cafe which serves simple fare**  which  are quite good.
Cafe must be informed earlier as they might not have enough food to feed us after 6pm.

End of walk                :    Tanah Merah MRT, EW 4.  (vicinity no makan place)

EOs         :    Christina CL Chan & KC Lau.

Pause, pause……a moment, please…..  Let’s enjoy some sea breeze and excellent views out to the sea!  emoticon

We will walk along the coast / beach / shoreline  where it is nice and breezy.  The terrain is consistently

flat
with paved pathways most of the way.  Trees provides some shade from the sun, thus, cooling in certain

areas.

We might have quite a view of aeroplanes that are taking off or landing at the nearby runway which is
almost parallel to our route.

If Weather, Tide & Time permits, we might bring you closer to the shoreline, where you can walk on a
secluded part of a white, sandy beach and perhaps walk on water to have fun with incoming waves, too.

So bring a towel.

We shall have a cool, refreshing drink as well as dinner at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal’s cafe.
It serves simple hot meals — fried noodles/hokkein mee/rice, zi char style.  Their chicken rice is relatively
good but might be cold then at that late hour.

Soh,  Alice Seah, KC Lau and me, ChristinaCL Chan,,,,, signing off              emoticon

Funny familiar forgotten feelings.

In response to Terence’s fantasy on our secondary days I want to add on it. Those were the days in school where we rejoice over the time spend learning and preparing our life for the tasks ahead.

I remember where towards the end of our secondary days we gathered together to do something meaningful and where we will cherished for life. The thing we do is to get those friends that we met to write on our autograph books. It will be something for each of us to remember the good times spend together in school.

I want to recollect here some of the poems that were written down. Most of them I have forgotten. These are some I remember. Some are rhymes and rhythm, some love poems. How many have ever ask your school mates to sign your autograph?

Here goes:

"Roses are red and violet are blue, I am allergic, I will sue".

"Drink hot coffee and drink hot tea, burn your lip and remember me".

"Remember me and my wishes while in the kitchen washing dishes, if the water is too hot, cool it and forget me not."

"Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet and so are you."

"Remember me early, remember me late, remember me at the old school gate".

More to come and I hope to get more contribution from fella members.

“Stars-in-Concert, Our Secondary School Days” 2013

All of us have dreams.  Our lives are full of happenings, from the moment we were born, to going to schools, starting a career, and finally to getting where we are today.  But, there are so many tasks we have yet to complete.  Yes, we should be contented where we are, and perhaps look back at our younger days.

Our last "Stars-in-Concert" was held in 2009; and the theme years then were the 60s and 70s.

As with all Club activities, the objective of our events is to bring SilverHairsClub members together, meet new friends, and getting to know one another better.  A theme helps all of us focus on creating an event which all of us can link ourselves to.  Next year 2013, we shall have another "Stars-in-Concert", and this time, the theme shall be "Our Secondary School Days".

We will have a concert.  There will be a stage, and there will be an audience.  As of now, the stage is empty, and the audience has no seats.  Tickets have not been printed, and all we have is an idea, to create "Stars-in-Concert, Our Secondary School Days".

So nice, if we can see each other in school uniforms, girls with "deep blue" skirts and white blouse and the boys in dark blue long pants, white shirts.  All of us have a school batch, while others come with a school tie.

What shall we have on stage?  Think about your school concert.  What was it like?

And, we are likely to have our Awards night during our Stars-in-Concert too.

If you like to be part of the organising team, do let me know.  Let’s get our schoolmates together; and if they are not members, maybe this is a good time to bring them in.

I look forward to your wildest dreams and thoughts, our Secondary School Days.

Romantic tour of NE Thailand during 15-27 Jan 2013, now changed to start Sat 19 Jan 2013 at Udon Thani and end Tue 22 Jan 2013 at Udon Thani

In early 2013, we will organise a romantic tour to North East Thailand during the period 19 – 27 Jan 2013. This is about three weeks before Chinese New Year.

Trip now confirmed to start Sat 19 Jan 2013 at Udon Thani province airport and end Tue 22 Jan 2013 at Udon Thani airport.  Travel between Bangkok and Udon Thani can be via a domestic 1 hr flight (Nok Air) between Bangkok and Udon Thani or a coach bus ride of about 6 hours.  More details soon.

The trip starts at Udon Thani airport or Khon Khaen landing up in Nong Khai, with a cross-over to Vietianne in Laos, and then back to Nong Khai.

Why is it romantic?  The most romantic part of this trip is the Friendship bridge between Laos and Thailand. Looking at it at 11pm gives one the impression that life is sweet and still, with the Mekong river glittering under the moon, and if you get up at dawn, the mist over the river will just make you wonder.  LIFE is romantic. Weather is dry, and temperature is likely to be 10 – 20C.

Nong Khai was the US R&R site during and after the Vietnam war.  Today, the place is the gateway to Laos and China.  It is beautiful, and if you are thinking of a place to retire, hmm, maybe this is the place. http://www.thaismile.jp/FotoGallary/ThaiPics/e_ThaiPhoto_NongKhai.html

I have not thought of how to get there, short of taking a connecting bus from Bangkok to Udon Thani.  More details will be given later.  There will be some adjustments, but this is the general direction.

If you are interested, do stick your name here.  Please make your final decision by 30 Nov 2012.

William is one of the co-founders of the SilverHairsClub.  There are many Singaporeans who have lived in Myanmar and they enjoy the quiet lifestyle of one of the last countries to be open to the world.  You are invited to listen to him on Skype, ask questions and get to know from him first hand, what it is like to live in the country.  William will be in Yangon at the time of this Skype session.

  • Date:  Fri  14 Sept 2012
  • Time:  Starts 2100 hrs and Ends 200 hrs.

Critical Thinking: Viewpoints

  • A few days ago I happened to catch on Talking
Point (tv prog), a very interesting and informative talk on the topic "How to
raise the fertility rate in S’pore". One of the viewers who called in suggested
that a young married couple be allowed to jump queue and be allotted a flat on
condition they produce a baby within a year. Immediately the two hosts and the
panel of speakers laughed at the amusing suggestion, with a grinning host
saying in general "what happens if there’s no baby after a year…"
  • I thought this kind of engagement is good for
critical thinking and decided to start this post to provide an opportunity for
interested members to write and share their views, thoughts, ideas…etc to
questions/statements posed on this post. I think Silverhair can contribute to
    challenges facing our  nation.
  • However. i must add that comments CRITICIZING
other people’s opinions are NOT WELCOME. This post does
    not support superior/judgmental attitude.

To get the ball rolling, here is the first
poser: What can be done to increase the fertility rate in
S’pore?

  • Do you think adult children should give their
    parents a monthly allowance?
  • Are you comfortable with the idea of today’s
youth asking the rich for expensive things?

Put on your thinking cap and cepat tulis/
???????  emoticon

Dave Lee – Introduction

Hi Everybody,

Just joined the club.

I am 61, still working, married with 2 grown sons and a wonderful wife. May retire soon though as work is now very stressful.

My interests are:

Leisure cycling on park connectors on most weekends (had covered most). Own a folding bicycly (Birdy) that can handle slopes so save my leg muscle. Usually about 25 to 30 Km each time with rest stops in between. Speed from 18 to 20 KMPH. I always cycle from East Coast to Garden By The Bay (not on the road) on Saturdays morning.

Ocassional local hiking and walking (with the wife) at the parks.

Jogging (5KM) only once a week only to save my knees.

Swimming once a week.

Fingerstyle guitar playing. Have tons of tabs.

I was a Toys collector. Now very low profile.

If you share some of the above, you can always write to me at meerobus@yahoo.com.sg.
