This month’s ITIG discussion will be on Understanding and Using the Internet.

So, what is the Internet? Internet is about “Networking”. You can communicate (in voice or in text), meet new friends through social networking, blogging, tweeting, do online transactions, search for answers/solutions, reading news/books (online) or even doing simple chore of keeping you reminded of your daily appointments and events, wherever you are.

Like electricity, knowing little about “The Internet” is a dangerous thing. If you are not careful, you may have got into trouble with viruses or intrusions from hackers. On the malicious side, sensitive information and/or monies may be involved in fraudulent transactions.

Internet is the future and is the way forward.

I have seen an 86 years old man searching for movies/video using the iPad and our “Z” Generation (3+ years) playing computer games on the iPad. Come to this ITIG discussion and share your expGGberience. Using the Internet is not always doomed and groomed; the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages. As the saying goes… nothing venture, nothing gain.

Cafe must be informed earlier as they might not have enough food to feed us after 6pm.

Pause, pause……a moment, please…..  Let’s enjoy some sea breeze and excellent views out to the sea! 

We will walk along the coast / beach / shoreline  where it is nice and breezy.  The terrain is consistently

flat
with paved pathways most of the way.  Trees provides some shade from the sun, thus, cooling in certain

areas.

We might have quite a view of aeroplanes that are taking off or landing at the nearby runway which is
almost parallel to our route.

If Weather, Tide & Time permits, we might bring you closer to the shoreline, where you can walk on a
secluded part of a white, sandy beach and perhaps walk on water to have fun with incoming waves, too. 

So bring a towel.        

We shall have a cool, refreshing drink as well as dinner at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal’s cafe.
It serves simple hot meals — fried noodles/hokkein mee/rice, zi char style.  Their chicken rice is relatively
good but might be cold then at that late hour.

Hi all.. we invite anyone and everyone from all over the island to join the us at Bukit Gombak stadium on Thursdays (for other activities besides badminton.) After alighting from the Bukit Gombak MRT station, is the indoor stadium where the regular group plays badminton. However, table tennis is also available and it is FREE (bring your own bats and balls). A short distance away, we can go for a walk at the Guilin Park. If anyone wants to cycle, i have a foldable bicycle which you can borrow. For lunch, there are neighborhood coffee shops, or we can adjourn to HomeTeam club, which has a Chinese restaurant. To venture further, we can drive to IMM for free parking. We can continue the afternoon’s fellowship with bowling or card games or mahjong or whatever..                                                                                                            Come and join us on Games Day …Cheers

Hi badminton kakis, Sorry to disappoint you but the badminton court bookings at Home Team ClubHouse has been "hijacked" by a private function..
However, we have booked the squash courts. There’s also swimming, bowling and a driving range available for a change. Since it is our regular Thursday morning get together in the west, please try to come and do our Thursday exercise in a different form. Lunch as usual after the games. Dear fellow SilverHairsClub members,

I like to share a thought with you at this time of the year.  It’s the usual
time of the year, when we have the feeling that the year is short, and that we
may not have done some meaningful for ourselves.  Before we realise it,
2013 is here.

Many of us are busy, even though we are over 45. Some of us are working to make a
living.  This includes me.  Or we may be busy catching up with
friends for coffee or mahjong.  Still, among us, many are busy nannying
our grandchildren.  While others are karaoke’ing the afternoon out or
dancing the nights away.  For some, it’s charity and social work or
trading online.  I wonder how many among us are active with other
activities eg watching Korean or Taiwanese movies every day.

We have friends, and some of us do not need to think of making more friends. 
Obviously, we don’t want to make friends whom we will regret meeting. 
It’s always nice to have some close friends, whom we can share our interests
and ideas.  Friends whom we can chat during lonely moments; maybe not now
but in later years.

For the last 7 years, SHC activities have been centred around "providing a
platform for Silver Hairs to make new and more friends".  This has
worked well for some members, and we would continue to focus on this objective.

It’s also time to revisit our efforts.  It’s time for non-active members to contribute
actively to the Club.  Have you shared your interests and activities with
Club members?  Have you organised any card games, handicrafts, going
downtown or travel and shopping trips to Johor Bauru with fellow member?
 What about mah-jong sessions? Computer knowledge sharing, cooking
sessions, going classes together and visit exhibitions.  Ever organised a
mini-potluck?

Have you ever offered a hand with Club administration and committee work?  We
have always been looking for volunteers, have you raised your hands? Many
members have organised at least one activity for SHC, but unfortunately many
have not. 

Perhaps, this is the time of the year, for you to think of making a contribution to
SilverHairsClub.  Introduce yourself to the Club, and you will be
surprised what it means to be an active member of SilverHairsClub.

This is a repeat session conducted in Sept last month in LKCC.

In the past, we were made to believe nothing is free. But now, we stand to be
corrected that sometimes – free offers (free Apps – application programs) do
exist. If accepted, it comes with risks and consequences. So the advice is, be
selective and know where the free application programs come from. Is there any
organisation or parties monitoring and checking these programs? Are these Apps
programs come from malicious sites? In this month’s discussion, we will show
you some of the reasonably safe sites (Apps programs) to have fun with – for
all ages.  A Power Point presentation will list down all (that I know of)
the things you can have fun with – using your iPad or tablet.

Please bring along your tablet, iPad or smart devices. The Venue is at Leng
Kee Community Centre (LKCC). Nearest MRT is Redhill MRT.

As the classroom has limited space, we intend to limit the class size to
16 from SHC and possibly 4 from the public through LKCC. So far, 6 have
pre-registered.

From Kembangan MRT Control Station, we shall walk on the path of the Park Connector alongside the Siglap Canal.  At the end of the canal and crossing over the East Coast Parkway, the walk would be under tall matured shaded trees, two small ponds, passing some ceramic stone structures by the beach and the ski park.  Sumptious food awaits us at the destination of East Coast Lagoon Food Village where there is popular rojak, duck noodle, satay and many other stalls.

Transport : There is a feeder bus from the food village to Bedok Interchange or you may walk to Marine Parade Road for other buses.

Do bring your umbrella or rain coat, your camera, drinking bottle, sun block, a hat and walking sneakers.

All of us have dreams.  Our lives are full of happenings, from the moment we were born, to going to schools, starting a career, and finally to getting where we are today.  But, there are so many tasks we have yet to complete.  Yes, we should be contented where we are, and perhaps look back at our younger days.

Our last "Stars-in-Concert" was held in 2009; and the theme years then were the 60s and 70s.

As with all Club activities, the objective of our events is to bring SilverHairsClub members together, meet new friends, and getting to know one another better.  A theme helps all of us focus on creating an event which all of us can link ourselves to.  Next year 2013, we shall have another "Stars-in-Concert", and this time, the theme shall be "Our Secondary School Days". 

We will have a concert.  There will be a stage, and there will be an audience.  As of now, the stage is empty, and the audience has no seats.  Tickets have not been printed, and all we have is an idea, to create "Stars-in-Concert, Our Secondary School Days".

So nice, if we can see each other in school uniforms, girls with "deep blue" skirts and white blouse and the boys in dark blue long pants, white shirts.  All of us have a school batch, while others come with a school tie.

What shall we have on stage?  Think about your school concert.  What was it like?

And, we are likely to have our Awards night during our Stars-in-Concert too. 

If you like to be part of the organising team, do let me know.  Let’s get our schoolmates together; and if they are not members, maybe this is a good time to bring them in.
