Abang, got lobang?

Most of us have at one time or another need some kind of help or services. It would be good to express it here on this post to reach out to fellow members.

I have previously started a a similar post in 2009 and many of you have share with us your experiences. This time round I have a couple from India coming for a two week stay and looking for a room or a small flat to rent for a fee. They are my old client but good friend now. They will arrive on January 3. Anyone have a lobang or know of anyone who can help. Whatever fee I collected, 30% will go toward a SHC Fund, how dat?

Dear Members emoticon

The next monthly gathering is scheduled as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 23 January 2013

Time:  4.30 – 8.30 pm

Venue: Hans Cafe – Great Eastern  Building, Upper Pickering Street

Charges: Free.  You are free to buy your own food and beverages at the counter

Please bring along your name tag.  If you don’t have one, we will give you a stick-on label.

Registration required.  Strictly for SHC members only.

Strictly no politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling or MLM.

The aim of the monthly gathering is to enable social networking among SHC members, for new and old Silverhairs to meet one another.   Time to just meet up, chit chat, plan your activities, have fun etc.

The following topics are food for thought and can be used for informal discussion among members during the meeting:

– What is happening to our Singapore men today? With all the latest happenings? (hee hee)

– Is taking up a medical insurance necessary especially for Silverhairs? What happens if a person retires and is no longer covered under any medical insurance during his Silver years?

– Will hobbies help to alleviate the ‘Empty Nest Syndrome’ and promote Active Aging (keeping us physically and mentally alert and happy) ?  Examples of such activities are dancing, karaoke singing, uke or guitar playing, travelling, quilt making, balloon sculpting, scrapbook creations, mahjong, brisk walking, coffee-meets etc.

– Is it advisable for Silverhairs to invest in stocks and shares or is there a better and safer way to grow our ‘nest egg’?

Close Encounter of a Certain Kind.

It seems so long I have not started a new post. We experience different kind of encounters, some  bad some blissful some life threatening! Some we may live to tell some we may not live to share.

There are people who need a stent or a bypass to survive, other a pacemaker. Still other have to live with diabetes, high cholesteral or high blood pressure.

Had my quarterly appointment with the doctor yesterday after a delay of one month. My reading for glucose shot through the roof, 14 and above. Doctor asks me, Dan wat to do? Strange question you are the doctor you tell me wat to do? Doctor wants to hear from my mouth. He knows that I have put it off for more than three years.

I said okay, let’s do it, put me on insulin. For the last four months I chose not to take my medications. Someone  told me that virgin coconut oil is good for me so I took two bottles  courtesy of a friend. After consuming the two bottles, I got no better.

A nurse show me how to take the insulin, one before breakfast and another before dinner. First, wash you hands, use a alcohol swab to clean your stomach, put the needle in two fingers from the navel. I used to faint at the sight of a needle. Here I inserted it in stomach and feel nothing, no pain not even a ant bite.

It was a breeze going though the process, all my fear were unfounded. I wish I have done it earlier. Last night I slept soundly through the night, waking up at 9:30am and feeling very good. So my friend if you see be taking out my shirt before dinner, encourage me on. It would be better too if I say a prayer!

Whatever we may go through in life, let’s try to accept it and hope for the best. Do you have a worse scenerios than this?

Desperate Dan

Applications on your smartphone – What are you using?

Recently, I was playing with my mobile phone, and suddenly while fiddling with the phone, I came across an application which I could download free.  I think a number of you are already using a couple of applications which you can share with fellow members.  Hew Lee, i am sure, you are very experienced with mobile phone applications.  Guess, Yew Kwong, if you are around, I am sure you too must have loaded some applications. Many are free.

Well, let me tell you about the little application which I loaded.  It’s called Anti Mosquito.  It takes less than one minute to download it to my phone.  When I launch Anti mosquito, it emits a high frequency sound which I could not hear.  But it is effective.  The sound chases away mosquitoes; and as I am sensitive to mosquitoes, this application works well for me.  Now, whenever i go near plantations, I activate the application.

Calling all IT savvy members, do let us know what applications you have downloaded to your phone, share with us how you use it and its usefulness especially to SilverHairs.

I look forward to you sharing.  It may turn out to be fun, or it may turn out to be useless.  But, less hear it from you.

Share with us what are your plans for the coming Dec holidays?

Many of us may already have made plans for Dec, and into January 2013.  Guess our kids will be having their school holidays, it’s time to clear our annual leave, or really we are at the time of the year where we just need a good rest.  Retirees or semi-retirees may have more time at their hands, to watch the forever unending Taiwan or Korean movies, or perhaps scoot up to Genting highlands.

But at the same time, many of us will not have plans, perhaps make plans to do nothing.  This is always an expensive time of the year, holidays, Christmas, parties and presents.  We have different life scenarios.

Sharing what we do is a great way for others to know more about us.  SHC makes this possible.  We tells others we like to eat nice laksa, and laksa lovers will start to gather together.  Simply share that we like playing mahjong on a Sat, and suddenly a gang is formed.

If we share with others that we have this itch to go to Port Dickson, you never know, a bus pops up and there we go as a small gang.  I love home potlucks, make soya beancurd, wow, another group is formed.  I think it is nice to share our interests and desires now, rather than wait until we are immobile.  This is how SilverHairs friends are developed.  The club provides the opportunity,  you have to share, rather than wait for someone to come over to you, and say, Hi.

December is a good time for topics.  It’s a time to think about what we will do in 2013.  Perhaps, you may want to start a fishing group, a small business to make and sell kaya, even to go out and ask friends for snake grass, hoping to find a cure for cancer.  So, if you have just bought a series from Korea, share with everybody.

If you are planning to get married, why not, tell us your plans.  Complete your dream to start charity work in Cambodia, NE Thailand or even in India.  Gosh, so many things we can do in Dec.  I look forward to hearing from you share your Dec plans.

Please be encouraging.  Encourage your fellow SHC friends to share too.  This is what I mean by participating.

Pros and cons of returning the food trays after eating – forum discussion

I have always been curious about anything and everything. My latest curiosity is the headlines in our local media and the government asking Singaporeans to use food trays and return these food trays to designated areas after eating.  There are many view points on why, how and what are the benefits. Am sure you have your talking points.  Share it then, maybe we will come up with something more workable.

Just a short while ago, I was eating in my local kopitiam. I was observing the cleaner.  At the table and with a tray, she selected certain bowls and pour all the similar food together and put them into a bigger bowl.  Suddenly it strikes me that what a waste if we were to put everything on a tray and send it to the disposal bin. Could she have sorted out the food, there is always spare meat in a fish, soup is rarely finished and there is always plenty of sauce left.  Someone could have enjoyed the remainder.  i suddenly thought it would not be a good idea to return our food trays.

Mind you, I support returning of food trays, but this observation gives me second thoughts.

What ideas do you have?

Looking for travel buddy/buddies to Cebu/Bohol on Dec 2 -7, 2012

Tiger Airways having an offer of a round trip of $171 ++ to Cebu,
Phillipines. Cebu has a rich historical heritage as Ferdinand Megallan landed on
Phillipines in 1521. There is also a vibrant nightlife in Cebu.

We can go to the neighbouring island of Bohol to see the National Geographic
Monument called The Chocolate Hills by express ferry Super Cat or Ocean Jet.
Hotels average about $30-40 Sing and guesthouse at $24 per air-con room in the
heart of Cebu City. The people are friendly and best of all, most of them speak
English.

Worth going due to cheap flight and favourable exchange rate of 1000
peso ~ $30 Sing dollars.

Flights leave Singapore on Sun Dec 2 or Mon Dec 3 and return to
Singapore on Friday Dec 7.

Please email me at laurawee@hotmail.com if you are keen to
join me.

Thank you.

Preparing For Dementia/Alzheimer Disease

Last night i watch and listen to a health and development specialist talking on how she’s preparing to get Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), a genetically transmitted disease.

She talked about her dad, a college professor, who started showing dementia about 12 years ago and was officially diagnosed in 2005. Being sickly her dad needs help eating, getting dressed and not knowing where he is. She said that out of fear of getting AD we tend to either go into denial or decide to do everything in preventing dementia.

She actually have had been doing what researcher suggested: Eating right, excercise daily and keeping her mind active. But according to her, research also shows that nothing will be 100 percent protecting us from getting AD. From her experience taking care of her father and researching what it’s like to live with dementia, she decided to choose on focusing three things.

Watch and listen to her 6 minutes speech at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv79SgT4O1k&feature=plcp

What promted me to listen is that i never read or hear anyone talk about preparing for alzheimer/dementia. Mostly is on prevention. Is she thinking out of the box?

What are your thoughts?

Stay Healthy! Be Happy! :)

P/S: Anyone can also share your thoughts via my email at: powjohnny@yahoo.com

IT Interest Group Meeting on 17-11-2012 (Saturday)

This month’s ITIG discussion will be on Understanding and Using the Internet.

So, what is the Internet? Internet is about “Networking”. You can communicate (in voice or in text), meet new friends through social networking, blogging, tweeting, do online transactions, search for answers/solutions, reading news/books (online) or even doing simple chore of keeping you reminded of your daily appointments and events, wherever you are.

Like electricity, knowing little about “The Internet” is a dangerous thing. If you are not careful, you may have got into trouble with viruses or intrusions from hackers. On the malicious side, sensitive information and/or monies may be involved in fraudulent transactions.

Internet is the future and is the way forward.

I have seen an 86 years old man searching for movies/video using the iPad and our “Z” Generation (3+ years) playing computer games on the iPad. Come to this ITIG discussion and share your expGGberience. Using the Internet is not always doomed and groomed; the advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages. As the saying goes… nothing venture, nothing gain.

Owing to classroom size availability, registration will close at 20.

For those who wish to attend, please provide me with your IC number (as required by LKCC). Do not write your IC details in your comments to the post but email me separately through hewlee@gmail.com

Monthly walk: Coastal Changi, our very own!

Due to unforseen circumstances, we are not going to Bukit Batok Nature Reserve, the walk route has been

changed!

***** The route is not Changi Village or Changi Point!   We go the opposite direction *****

Flat Roads, Shady Trees and Planes……… we shall tread and view!

Date                          :      Saturday,  10th November, 2012

Time                          :       4.15pm  "sharp"    (2.5 to 3hours)

Meet/Start Place       :    Tampines Bus Interchange, BERTH 9, we shall board Bus Service# 19, together.

Getting There            :    Nearest MRT: Tampines MRT (EW2)

Makan place              :
Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal "TMFT"- has a small cafe which serves simple fare**  which  are quite good.
Cafe must be informed earlier as they might not have enough food to feed us after 6pm.

End of walk                :    Tanah Merah MRT, EW 4.  (vicinity no makan place)

EOs         :    Christina CL Chan & KC Lau.

Pause, pause……a moment, please…..  Let’s enjoy some sea breeze and excellent views out to the sea!  emoticon

We will walk along the coast / beach / shoreline  where it is nice and breezy.  The terrain is consistently

flat
with paved pathways most of the way.  Trees provides some shade from the sun, thus, cooling in certain

areas.

We might have quite a view of aeroplanes that are taking off or landing at the nearby runway which is
almost parallel to our route.

If Weather, Tide & Time permits, we might bring you closer to the shoreline, where you can walk on a
secluded part of a white, sandy beach and perhaps walk on water to have fun with incoming waves, too.

So bring a towel.

We shall have a cool, refreshing drink as well as dinner at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal’s cafe.
It serves simple hot meals — fried noodles/hokkein mee/rice, zi char style.  Their chicken rice is relatively
good but might be cold then at that late hour.

Walk Team EOs, namely: Charles Wee, Jeffrey Lim, Mary Tan, Joyce Tan, Veronica Wong, Conrad Tang,  Lydia
Soh,  Alice Seah, KC Lau and me, ChristinaCL Chan,,,,, signing off              emoticon
