What happens when you write a Post or a Comment?

For new Forum users:  There are two ways to participate in this forum.  One is to write a Post; Two is to write a Comment.

All Comments are automatically approved, if the comment has no URL or links.  There are also some few hundred words which are considered sensitive.  In this case, they go into a moderation queue, and we may approve them within 48 hours.  If the comment is not approved, they will be deleted.

All SilverHairsClub members using this forum can write a new Post.  However, they would need to save as Draft.  Within 48 hours, the Post would be approved.  If the Post is not approved, they will be deleted.  Experienced Forum users, who have successfully written a number of Posts, would have their Posts automatically published.  Only appointed SHC Event Organisers would be given the Edit feature.

As a rule, forum users should not Post or Comment, edit or delete for another person or organisation.

You will know that your membership has been terminated, if you do not receive the monthly SHC updates or you can no longer participate in this forum.  But, no problem, if you have a Q, you can SMS me, with your name attached.

A new category “Reflections”

A new category "Reflections" has just been created.  It’s about anything you feel like saying, and you want other SilverHairs to hear of.  Maybe you just woke up from bed, or during a lazy Sat/Sun doing nothing, and something strikes you and you feel you just have to share it with others, before you forgot what it was all about.

Maybe, you feel like eating a horse.  Maybe you decide that this is it, and you want to climb Mount Everest.   Maybe you just crazy over someone, and you just want to tell him "How about dinner?".  Perhaps you have a great home entertainment set, and you want 5 persons to join you, why not?  Go ahead.  You could be thinking of so many things, and nothing has happened so far, you want to share it with other SilverHairsClub members, just do it.  For jokes and stories, please use the Page "Non-SHC stories, jokes, info, etc.".

So, say it, and you can say it anytime now or later.  The administrator will not censor it, as long as club taboos are followed.  For this Post, the administrator is nasty, so no comments.  Just start your own Post. Have fun.

Have your photo, link to your Post or Comment

Hi everybody,

The good thing with members of this forum is that there is no shortage of suggestions.  The latest suggestion is to link a member’s Post or Comment to his/her photo.  I think it is a good idea too, but gosh this is going to take up a lot of time.  But, I think it is good and we should go ahead.  Very often, we cannot tell one June from another June or even another June.

Putting up a photo is optional.  So, it goes like this.  When you read a Post or a comment, you will see this, for example.

Name: Terence | E-mail: terences@silverhairsclub.com | URI: https://silverhairsclub.com | IP: 58.143.73.0

Usually, the URI is empty.  This is because there is no link to a webpage.  We can link your photo to the above URI.

As this requires time, I would like two show of hands.  The job is to take a photo of forum members (optional), and upload this to the SHC server.  Alternatively, the forum participant sends you a digital photo.  This photo is then given to the forum member, as a URI link.  The URI link is inserted into the forum member’s profile.  So, when a Post or Comment is posted, new members can click on the URI and see the photo.

I have to apologise I am unable to do this function due to my travel schedule.  If you would like to do this task, please raise your hand.  The requirement is you must be willing to spend 30 mins a day, anytime of the day.  Important you have a PC, preferably with broadband access.  Ideally, you should be retired, and very patient with forum members who are not internet savvy.  No experience is not a problem, as you will be trained.  You must love chatting, and loves meeting members, especialy at monthly gatherings.  Should have a simple digital camera, if not, one will be provided.  Male or Female.  Age over 45.  This is volunteer service, and the term is two years, ending 31 Dec 2007.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Terence Seah

When someone makes a Comment in your POST

When you write a POST, please add it to a Category.  This helps other SilverHairs find your POST when searching for an activity.

When someone writes a Comment in your POST, you will also receive an alert in your email.  You are therefore encouraged to write a Profile of yourself, so that others can contact you.

TEA TALK

Do you know your tea?

In the western world, generally speaking, the folks know their wine. In the east, we should know our tea. This is especially so among the early Chinese scholars and the elite, they really know their tea. How about you, do you want to know?

There are six types of teas consumed by the Chinese :

Green unfermented green leaves that produce a pale and slightly astrigent infusion.

Red fermented, producing a strong infusion but much less popular than green tea.

Black fermented black leaves that produce a reddish infusion with a strong flavour.

Oolong semi-fermented with flavour of green tea and the strength of red.

Brick mixed teas pressed into a block and popular with Russians,Tibetans and nomadic tribes in the north of China

Flower scented good quality green tea mixed with dried fragrant flowers, such as jasmine, rose and chrysanthemum.

In a traditional tea house, “Yum Cha” is not just about having your “char siew pau” and tea. In real terms it is having tea in the traditional Chinese way. A number of factors are involved in making a good cup of Chinese tea. The blend, freshness, quality of the leaf, hardness and the temperature of the water comes into play. The initial temperature of the little tea pot, time permitted for the infusion etc. A good cup of tea should not have milk or sugar added to it. It is almost as taboo as putting ice cubes into your mug of beer!

I would like to organise a talk in a tea house if there is enough SHC members who are interested. May I have your response, please.?

SHC Website Membership Administrator

We have seen keen interests in SilverHairs participating in the SilverHairsClub website forum.   At the same time, the SilverHairsClub membership is expanding.  To participate in discussion on this website, SHC members need to register separately on the website.

We are looking for 2 SHC Website Membership Administrators, with the following loves.

  • Loves meeting new SilverHairs via email and in person at gatherings.
  • Has at least 30 minutes to spare each day on the SHC website.
  • Friendly, and can show a smile in an email, even though you may wish to knock that someone on the head with your shoe.
  • Has attended at least 2 monthly club gatherings.
  • Currently, not holding any SilverHairsClub positions.
  • Ensure confidentiality of database.
  • Two persons to manage Last name A-M and the other N-Z.
  • Term:  till end 2008.

The tasks:

  • To welcome newly registered members to the website forum.
  • To ensure that new members fill in the first and last name and a proper nickname.  This proper nickname appears on all Posts and Comments.
  • To manage passwords, for members who have lost their passwords.
  • To promote authority levels, as members meet the club’s discussion criteria.

Task excluded:

  • No responsibility for forum content in SHC website.

If you love to to volunteer for these two positions, please raise your hand.

** Update:  Both Oi Cheng and LH Jie are now SHC website membership administrators.  Register now, and they will be there to welcome you via your registered email.

SHC Calendar of Events is up, at the top of website

Two months ago, Christina Chan suggested the issue of a diary of SilverHairsClub activities.  As more posts come up, events are pushed lower the forum listing.  This makes it difficult to find the events.

Dolly Lim and Yew Kwong have both volunteered to be SHC Calendar of Events managers.  If you are organising an activity for SilverHairsClub members, you may inform Dolly or Yew Kwong.  They will insert your activity into the Calendar of Events.   Thank you both for volunteering.

Note:  Non-SHC members, external organisations, external events, advertising or promotions not allowed.

When do most SilverHairs visit the SHC website?

Here are some statistics.  Most members start to visit the SHC website at 0800 hrs and 2300 hrs each day.  Usually, the lowest peak period is 1700 hrs.  Maybe, this is because many SilverHairs are still working.  See the trends here.

You are encouraged to share your interests with other SilverHairs.  We want to hear from you.  I see there are interests to discuss investments, health and business issues.  These topics are encouraged.  If your Posts or Comments are not published or deleted, you may email the administrator to enquire.  We will get you a reply within 48 hours.

Here are some reasons why your Posts or Comments may not be published.

  • Some key words are objectional.  Note the club’s taboos.
  • Any reference to external websites, names, addresses or telephone numbers.  Promoting any external organisation without administrator’s approval.
  • Automatic Posting authority may be granted to those who have posted at least 3 Posts.
  • Comments authority is granted to all members.
  • For jokes, and information only articles, please  use Non-SHC stories, jokes, info   under Pages.
  • And, if you write a Post, without a category, chances are your Posts will be held back.
  • Other than SHC activities, any Post over 15 lines may be delayed.  Please keep within the 15  line text box.  No limit on comments

As a new feature, we have added "Latest Posts" and "Latest Comments" for your convenience.  This is at the very top of the website.

Have fun.

SHC logo

SHC website – making it run faster

Currently, the SHC website is moderated.  We get approx 5 spams a week, and usually, they are killed before you see it.  The spams are usually about viagra and online medical purchase.  With this change, spams will appear; but we will kill them, once we spot them.

"Comments" are moderated.  They make take between 1 minute to 24 hours, before they are approved to appear on this website.  Considering the type of comments we are getting so far, I am thinking of allowing Comments" to be approved in real time.  We skip the moderation process.  In other words, if you write a "Comment", and submit it, the "Comment" is automatically approved.  This will make the SilverHairsClub website fast and more exciting.

As for "Post", everybody can write a "Post".  If you have a record of keeping within the rules of the club on this website, your "Post" will appear automatically too.  If not, you can still write, but your "Post" will be moderated.

This means that username "Guest" will have to be deleted.  This also means that a published "Comment" or "Post" can be deleted by the administrator whenver it is found to be unacceptable.

For SilverHairs who have long stories to tell or share with other members, please use Pages "Non-SHC stories, jokes, info".  Do not write as a Post or a Comment.  This is space optimisation.

Effective immediately.  This feature may be withdrawn, if widely abused.  I hope not, as we are all SilverHairs.

(And, if this feature does not work today, I am sure I can get it to work by Monday.  I see a little snag.)

Used PCs for SHC members Project

This is one of my favourite past times. I have been doing this since late 90’s on both personal and corporate basis.

I had personally encountered many elders like myself who have been deprived of owning a decent PC (at times even none) or rights to use one. They would also not foot out the money to get for themselves. Many a reason being that they afraid that they might offend or receive severe criticism from their children or friends.

I m just fortunate to have own not only one but three (a lappy and 2 PCs) numbers solely. My other family members have their own.

I believe its high time that I should push for such cause. Together with interested members here, we can help bring our non-IT savvy (dont know) members to the minimum level and not left behind in the digital divide.  Many may still not choose to pursuit but decisions are theirs.

Since all information about what’s happening in SHC is web-based, it would be good if members keep themselves updated by surfing the SHC’s homepage.  Being IT-savvy, it will give you an edge over getting information faster and better than those who are not. On the other hand, people cant take you as "handicapped".

So much for the blah blah blah. Let me take lead in what we can do with your help. We can go on a 2-prone direction by providing 1) hardware (PCs) and 2) software (home guided learning).

The Task –

1. Get members to donate their unwanted PCs.

2  Match and identify members (those who are not doing well or receiving no income and dont own any) who want to own the PCs.

3. Get members who wish or would like to provide home guided learning.

4. Match and identify members who need home guided learning.

5. Get members to form core group to refurbish the donated PCs at donors’ premises or otherwise.

Nothing is called achievement until the time you bring back the life of a machine that has reached its "EOL" (end of life).

Should we do not not to do, your responses are very important.

Improving the SilverHairsClub website

We have received a number of suggestions and ideas on how to improve the SHC website.

Some of the complaints include difficult to register, the password never come, the text colours are too light, very difficult to find a posting, and not beautiful.

Some of the latest recommendations include taking out the "Guest" user and closing this website, password control to only registered members.

Tell us the type of changes you would like to see on this website, give us your recommendations.  We are taking orders now, on this website.  Give us a whack.  Order close 30 June 2007.

How to get other SilverHairs to know more about you?

Some of us have been thinking how to write and share with other SilverHairs their interests.  Many SilverHairs would like to meet other SilverHairs with the same interests.  But, some of us are just shy, and not so sure where to start. Well, we shall make it easy for some of you.

Send an email to Vishal at Vishal@SilverHairsClub.com with your mobile telephone number.  Tell him you have some thoughts and ideas, and would like to share with others your ideas and interests.  We will call and talk with you, do a short write up for you on this website, and invite similar like-minded SilverHairs to share their thoughts with you.  Strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.

Your interests and thoughts can be on retirement plans, hobbies, going concerts, starting a small bread shop, joining travel, etc, etc, etc.

If you can do so yourself, do share with us and write your interests and ideas on this website.  Don’t be shy.  You can do so anytime.

Summary of SilverHairsClub membership

We did a summary of SHC membership.  Thought it is good to share with you.  Due to difficulty of collecting response, I would give an accuracy of +/- 5%.

Membership composition:
– Total registered – close to 3,000 with a mix of Chinese, Indian and Malay.
– to the best of our knowledge, 100% are over 45 years.
– 85% are still actively employed or engaged in own business.
– 15% are retired or not working.
– 60% are females and 40% are males.

Language:
– English is commonly used.
– 10% speaks mainly Mandarin, and not comfortable to join SHC activities because English is our common medium.

PC and internet fluency:
– 40% have no access to a PC at home, or their kids occupy most of the computer time.
– 60% have access to internet at home/office.
– at least 50% are not comfortable with PC and internet.
– about 80% prefer phone and SMS communication.

Reasons for joining SilverHairsClub:
– a high 85% join with the aim of finding new friends, although we are not clear about the remaining 15%.
– common reasons for joining include friendship, finding travel partners, find healthy activities and sharing retirement issues.

Interesting perceptions about the SilverHairsClub:
– each month, we encounter about 5-10 queries if SHC is linked to any government agencies, in particular RC groups.  We try to stay as an informal social club.
– prior to joining SHC, common queries include "whether SHC is a dating club?"  However, after going through the SHC website, and when told SHC is not a dating club, these group still decide to join SHC.

Feedback:
– More than 80% of members prefer SHC to remain independent, simple and free and easy.
– some 5% prefer an organised structure, with a management structure or committee.  SHC operates by events.  Each event is led by an Event organiser, with a small adhoc committee.  All are volunteers.
– there are suggestions for a membership subscription of $1-2 per month to help with expenses.  SHC has taken the decision, no subscriptions will be collected.
– SHC receives strong support from members for its one single objective of providing a platform for SilverHairs, over 45, to meet new and more friends.
– Many members have accepted our taboos on politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM during club’s events.

We would like to  your feedback to this summary.

How we can fulfill the SilverHairsClub’s objective in 2007?

SilverHairsClub’s key objective is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new friends.  Our group is diversed and growing.  Having participate in some of our events, please share with us your thoughts on how can further meet this objective.

If, so far, you have not participated in our activities, I am eagerly looking forward to hearing from you too.

For SilverHairs who are comfortable with online chat, and not able to join the gatherings

There many many SHC members whom we have not met.  Some are shy, while others find our gathering timings not suitable.  Some live in Jurong, while others live in Chua Choa Kang.  Many SilverHairs are wondering how to meet other SilverHairs, and yet unable to benefit from the convenience of MRT and buses.  Dont give up, we are looking for places in North, East and West of Singapore island. You can help out.

Early last year, we tried web-chat, and we were partially sucessful.  For all SHC members, who are unable to join the physical gatherings, let’s meet online.

For how to, please click here.  Please contact Vishal at vishal@silverhairsclub.com, if you wish to have a practice/trial.

The date:  Sat, Mar 17, 1400 – 1600 hrs. . To register, simply add your name here.
