If you have a hearing problem, your mobile can be a great help

hearingaid     I like to share an accidental experience with a hearing problem.

Most of us carry a mobile phone.  Inside the mobile phone, there is a microphone and an external jack for a headphone.

  1.  Look for an apps with the name “hearing aid”.  Install it.
  2. Plug a headset to the external jack.

When you have a chat with your friends, put the mobile phone on the table.  Start the app.  Hear the conversation clearly and loudly with the headset.

Share your experience.  Which app works well.

Setting up a Premier Paypal account for your small business

Paypal is a popular way to sell your things and collect money.  It is also a way to pay for goods and services you may buy internationally or locally.

In Singapore, money that is collected by Paypal on your behalf can be withdrawn to a local Singapore account.  Some of you are doing some selling, and may like to set up a Premier account or a Business account.

We are trying to identify a place.  Yew Kwong has been kind enough to conduct a session, approx 2 hours for members who are interested in setting up a Premier Paypal account.  We have not identified the place yet.

But, if you are interested, please register your name here.  More information will be per provided here, when ready.  Charge approx $5 per person.  Priority given to those who register personally on this forum.

Recruit the new SHC committee

shclogo300    committee1

Dear members,

We have tried different committee concepts to run SHC.  We learn what works and what fails.  But, we should not give up, even though we had failed in the past.  I still think it is better to have a committee to run the SilverHairsClub.  Personally, I do not prefer the status quo situation.  So, I will try again.  One concept which will not change is that members can continue to organise activities for other members, as EOs or ECs.

The new committee will come from our general membership.  For the first year, the chairman will be me.  Haha, I am no retired general, maybe a retired fisherman. If you like to join the committee, please whatsapp to me at +65 9489 4360.

Some points which I have learnt over the last 10 years from Club members are:

  1. Able to work with other committee members.  Friendly and sociable members preferred.  Less “I” and more “We”.
  2. All meetings will be via Whatsapp only.  Physical meetings only from time to time.  Why Whatsapp?  because I travel most of the month, so very little time in Singapore.  But, I believe in SHC and our seniors population.  We have to care for ourselves.
  3. Members should not circulate pictures, videos, URLs, only text.
  4. Agenda strictly re Club matters only.
  5. No politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM.
  6. Committee members who are unable to participate in the meetings, I am sorry we have to let you go.  Committee members who break the rules, will be automatically take out of the committee.

If you would like to develop a future for SHC, and are interested to make our objective work, I would to invite you to join the new SHC committee.  Our objective is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends.  I would like to extend this platform, but let’s discuss within the committee.

I look forward to hearing from you.  +65 9489 4360.

A singer and entertainer, and a non-professional

singer1   sing2  sing1

If you can sing, love to sing, in English, Chinese, Malay, Vietnamese, Hindi or just about any language, comfortably and with your own music media, we would like to hear from you.

Continuously 4-5 songs, dont have to be a professional.  It is ok to fumble once in a while but can get out of it and laugh at oneself, this would be great; I am looking at an entertainer and singer.  I dont expect your entertainment to be free.

Songs, memorable, love, known, evergreen, songs that most of us know, male or female.  Romantic also can.  Hatred also ok.

I dont need you to have a good professional voice, but if you can carry through throughout the 4-5 songs, without looking at the scripts all the time, you are the person.  Sure, you can have a partner.

You know who to contact: +65 94894360.

Sept Monthly gathering

shclogo300 announcement4  aprilmtg1

This month, we were planning to have the SHC monthly gathering with Ann Giri as the EO.  Unfortunately, she has indicated she has no experience organising the monthly gathering.  Looks like the Sept monthly gathering is off.

I am not sure about future monthly gatherings.  A few things go on in my mind.

  1. Should we have a paid person or group to organise the monthly gathering?  Of course, we have to figure out how to pay this person or group.l
  2. It appears that free membership is not working.  Members expect someone to organise the monthly gathering on a regular monthly basis.
  3. There is a suggestion that we should ask the previous EOs to organise gatherings again.  I am not sure, as it runs counter to our idea to have one member do a gathering once in the lifetime of the members.
  4. Maybe we should pick members in turn to be the EO if the member has not done the role before.

What do you think?

Parliament dissolved; Singaporeans to vote in General Election on Sep 11

SilverHairsClub is a social club; and politics is one of the taboos which is not allowed into discussion in SilverHairsClub.com.  Very soon, Singaporeans will vote in a General Election on Sept 11, 2015.  This is an important day for Singaporeans.

This time, I have decided to open politics for discussion in fast moving social media on Whatsapp GE 2015.  Whatsapp discussion will be open from 26 Aug 2015 and will carry on till 13 Sep 2015.  Please feel free to add your personal comments, comment on all/any of the paarties.  Please do not name call any person.  No not spread rumours. And do not attack any members who participate in this Whatsapp chat.

This whatsapp chat is called GE 2015.  To participate, simply whatsapp to Terence Seah at +65 9489 4360.   And feel free to exit anytime.

Let’s organise the year end ball; now called the New-Year Ball

hawaiian gal  hawaiian gal2  shc-logo

Let’s start dreaming our year end event of the year.  You can be a part of it; simply by raising your hand and agreeing that you will work with everybody in the team, whoever they are.  This should be the spirit for this and all our events.

What the event will be, it will be up to all of us.  But, it can be a ball, a big ball.  I can make the following guess.  We should aim big, and hit 150 pax.  Music, songs and dancing should be the theme.  Food, well, it is a must; for without it, many members will be unhappy. So, we want to be happy.  Seriously, we should have a balance of the sexes.  Let’s have all ears.  Maybe, if you have a great idea in mind, yes, why not?

Let’s start looking for a band; either a live band or a musician without a good sound system.  We dont need a pro, but someone who can make us feel young again.  Let’s go all way out to look for new bands or musician, that SHC has not used before.  Consider songs and music that we have not heard off for many many years, but were popular during our younger days.  Let’s make a decision by end July 2015.  We should pay for the music.

And, for the venue, why not a nice hotel venue.  This time, it need not be at a country club.  If you have great contacts with the hotels, and if we can have a good package of between $40 and $50 per pax, we can look at it.  Food, cannot be too different, international, Chinese or even simply a 3-course Western.

As for the date, somewhere towards Nov/Dec, it can be fun.  If not, we hold it in Jan. That should work too.

For a change, we can have corporate sponsors.  Probably, a company to sponsor a couple of pairs of airtickets or cruise tickets to Alaska, another company to sponsor the beer and drinks, we can consume.  Other ideas can be a company to sponsor SHC t-shirts for all attending members. , the latest Iphone or the latest smartTV.  Great, let’s see what we can come up with.  We should have other prizes too.

Activities and program for the ball.  How much we will charge is still open.

Hope we can all start the thinking process.  And, I am looking for a committee to handle (1) Venue, Decor and backdrop and F&B (2) Program and activities (3) Prizes (4) tickets and seatings (5) Registration and accounts.  And importantly, a co-EO.

Would you like to go to Delhi and Mumbai this Nov 2015?

I am in Delhi and Mumbai this whole week.  In fact, I have been to these two cities more than 20 times in the last 20 years.  I plan to go again in Nov 2015.  After doing what I am doing, I am able to extend my trip and bring a group to travel Delhi and Mumbai.

Many of us may not know; but Mumbai is the largest city in the world.  It is a very vibrant city, with many historial sights, colourful markets, millions of people and exotic Indian food.

Delhi is the capital city of India.  It’s most well known site is the Taj mahal, which many of us must have known and studied during our school days.

When was the last time you were in India? and what were your feelings and feedback about visiting India.

SHC Whatsapp Cooking

cooking1     cooking2

Hi fellow members,

I have been following up on SHC Whatsapp Cruises and Whatsapp Gardening, and I am impressed with the success of the groups discussion and interests. The participants were genuingly interested in cruises and gardening. Those who find the discussions not to their interests can drop out of the group anytime.

So, we move on. Cooking (not baking or making cakes) has been talked about in SilverHairsClub for years. We tried cooking demos, recipes, and classes. Some worked, others didn’t work. But I am only an eater.

Well, guys and gals, if you are truly into cooking ie cooking different dishes, welcome to SHC Whatsapp Cooking. Feel free to drop a note here that you are interested, and I shall contact you to the group.

Please keep strictly to cooking, or the fairy godmother will wake up after years of sleeping. I hope you enjoy yourself.

Cooking brings friends together. Not for those who wish to eat only.

Perth a place for holiday or for retirement. What is your experience?

australia     One of the most sought after activity after retirement is travelling.  Some of us are contented to say in Singapore; while others are forever looking out for near places to live their retirement. In the last two weeks, the Straits Times carried two articles on Perth and Western Australia.

For some members, their children are studying in one of Perth’s universities. For others, it is a golfing outing with friends.  Many just love the open air and wide space. Families may go there to see dolphines and whales.  And for others, a chance to own a 450 sq metre piece of land with a landed property at about AUD 450,000 freehold.

Some years ago, SilverHairsClub organised a homestay among Singaporean homes, enjoyed Fremantle and its wide and beautiful coastline, moved leisurely around Perth city, and mixed with the Singapore community.

Perth is 5 hours from Singapore, same time zone, and with Scoot, jetstar,
Quantas, Singapore airlines and Air Asia, many can buy their air tickets between S250 to 900 return. Hotels starts from AUD100, and rentals of an apartment or house are around AUD 450+ per week..  Car rentals are pretty cheap, and available at around AUD50-70 per day.  Coffee is expensive, at about AUD 4 per cup.  A single dish is big sized, and likely to cost AUD 10 – 18 each.

What are your experiences and considerations when it comes to holiday or retirement in Perth?  Share and discuss.

Opportunity to tap the newly launched Singapore Centre for Social Enterprise (RaiSE)

RaiSE was launched on 27 May 2015.  In Channel News Asia”s report today, RaiSE will distribute $30m worth of grant and investments over 5 years to boost social enterprises. The requirements are a financial assessment, a compelling social objective and a proven sustainability of the business model.  The amount awarded depends on the maturity of the social enterprise.  Funding will support proof-of-concept.

RaiSE notes that many social enterprises face challenges such as talent, business know-how and funding.

SilverHairsClub has a clear objective of providing a platform for Singaporeans, over 45 to meet new and more friends.  It has been operating since Oct 2005, and we would be celebrating our 10th anniversary this Oct.  We have many activities.

1.  As a social enterprise, our EOs and ECs have organised numerous activities.  We have no lack of activities, as we believe in our concept of one member doing an activity during the life of his/her membership.  Some EOs have been organising and running activities for the last 10 years.

2.  Financially, SHC operates on a cost basis.  The Club does not collect membership fees, and as long as members are over 45, Singaporeans and PR, they are eligible to join as a member of SilverHairsClub.  We have been operating 10 years under this financial model.  Although we do not have a physical premise to call our own or rent from a landlord, we have managed well with public venues and private premises.

3.  In terms of management, we operate with minimal manpower.  Some of our key roles are membership admin, IT and hosting services and support services to our SilverHairsClub.com.  All other operations and management work are within the role of the EOs and ECs.

4.  With the existing model and concept, SHC can expand its social enterprise to other Singaporeans and PRs living within mainland Singapore.  Funding and assistance from RaiSE will widen our scope, our membership and sustain our activities.

What do you think?  Shall we actively seek assistance from RaiSE?  And what can you do be part of the committee to seek this assistance? Thinking.

SHC Whatsapp Chat – Gardening

This Whatsapp Chat – Gardening is for SHC members who loves gardening, and who likes to share their plants and flowers with fellow members. Hopefully, gardening hobbyists will find new friends, meet one another and exchange plants, shrubs, flowers and fruit trees.  I guess you can also exchange grass, weeds, seeds and tree trunks.  Have fun.

Simply let me know if you like to join SHC Whatsapp – Gardening, and you will be put in touch with one another.  Please stay within the topic Gardening if you wish to stay in the group.  You may removed yourself from the group at any time.

Hosting gatherings at your home

shclogo300  house1  febmtg4

For SHC events, we have held many of our activities at restaurants, cafes, cinemas, foodcourt, public parks and beaches, country clubs, homes, condo function rooms, hotels, sometimes in Singapore, nearby countries and also faraway destinations.

We can now explore further, having some of our activities in the homes. I guess we can work on the following concept.
1.  SilverHairsClub will organise and pay for the use of the place, food and drinks, clean-up and a fee for the maid.
2. We can do small groups, hosting 5-15 members, subject to venue and member’s convenience.
3. All activities are open to Seniors in Singapore and SilverHairsClub members. There will be a fee charged.
4. For security purposes, only members who register personally at SilverHairsClub.com can participate.
5. Each gathering would have a focus eg mahjong, arts and crafts, karaoke, viewing a movie, sharing pictures of an overseas holiday, cooking and receipe planning sessions and hydroponics gardening. Games, chess, holiday planning, small business discussions, IT sharing, talks and charity programs can also be in the plan.
Casual chitchats are unlikely to be organised by the club. Chit-chat activities can be organised by any member, as is being done now by ECs.
6. Concept-wise, the organiser will be SilverHairsClub, so the club can schedule various prgrams. The member in the house or apartment plays the role of host, and makes his/her place available on certain dates and times. The activity will be held, subject to acceptance by the venue member and SilverHairsClub.
7. The objective of hosting activities in the homes is to encourage close group interaction among members for specific interest. We are looking at running these activities regularly, rather than adhoc basis. As our activities are not govt-funded and as volunteers are hard to come by, we have to find a workable solution to pay for costs and the organisers and yet give an option for SilverHairs and other seniors to enjoy their interests and meet up with friends.
8. An organising committee, comprising SilverHairsClub members, will be set up to manage these activities.  The team committee will be paid a reasonable fee.
This idea of “Hosting activities in the homes” is not new. It has been ongoing and organised by various members. But, it has been limited to small groups and not open to other members.
* if you are able to host agatherings in your home, please contact me at +65 94894360. You can also indicate your interest here.
*. Members who like to be part of this team, and help organise activities in the homes, please also let me know.

Sharing a day with the Batam kids, Sat/Sun 27/28 Jun 2015.

nnbatam1  batamkid1  batamkid3 batamkid2

This trip is cancelled as Hari Raya falls during our intended trip.

Ong Lin Khim, whom some of you have met, has been a regular resident and visitor to Batam for many years.  For almost 10 years, I have noticed his interest in helping young children with their education and day-to-day living.  Batam was the place, because he has some very close Indonesian friends living there.

He has  a small two-storey house, perched on a slight hill.  From here, his staff does some work, and Ong organises help programs for a number of villages and kids.  He loves to see kids who wants to study.  Sometimes, I joined him when he and his staff buy groceries from the shops and distributes eggs, rice and dailies to villages and kids.  I was impressed as he has been doing this activities for many years.

Recently, he helped fund the setup of a Warong, a stall with a beautiful facing of the sea, and close to where he works and stays.  Some of you may know that a Warong is a small stall, selling coffee, tea, some snacks and food.  I had been there to his house, which has a balcony and a living room where he and me can sleep on the floor.  It wasnt a luxury, but there was airconditioning and bathroom. This house is not in the city but it is about 20 minutes from the ferry Sekupang.  It’s quiet and relaxing.

I have asked Ong if some of us could stay at his 2-star house, oops, no swimming pool overnight, participate in his charity work and that after the next day’s breakfast, we could venture into town and have dinner there, before catching a boat to Singapore.

He was reluctant because he thinks that his place and warong would not be up to SilverHairs expectations and standards.  But, finally, he agrees to give it a go and try.  He will provide free on-the-floor accommodation at his house, and participants will pay for the marketing which his staff will cook Indonesian style ie lunch, dinner and breakfast.  We talk about transport, and I have asked his Indonesian staff to look out for a van and motocycle taxis.  I did request for female motorcycle taxis.

The purpose of this activity is to partipate in “Meeting the Batam kids”.  Participants can bring their unused clothes, pens, pencils, balloons, toys, etc, as seen appropriate to young kids and adults.  For groceries, we can contribute a token to buy some stuffs from the local market.

I have set the following activity details.  If you would like to spend an overnight in Batam, one day on charity, overnight at Ong’s place, having food cooked by local Indonesians, and finally spend the following afternoon in Batam city, do let me know.

  • Date:  Sat/Sun 27/28 June 2015.
  • Meeting point at harbourfront: 1st boat out
  • Return point at Batam:  last ferry
  • Costs:  Everybody pays for own ferry.
  • Accommodation: At Ong’s 2 Star residence, complementary
  • Food – Lunch, Dinner, breakfast – we share and pay the local cooks
  • Giveaways to the villages and kids – we bring along during the trip
  • Number of pax: 6 to avoid us falling through the floors.

If you would like to participate, please register your name here.  If you cannot make this date, you can also register here, and let me know the weekend you are available.

SilverHairsClub celebrates its 10th anniversary in Oct 2015

announcement red square grungy isolated rubber stamp  memory1  Champagne

Dear members,

Many of you have been with SilverHairsClub since Oct 2015 2005.  Many are still around, while some have gone quiet, and some can only see us from afar.

I have uploaded a video (right column) showing the  faces of members during our early days.  See if your face is there.  I remember many faces; and this video brings back good memories.

October is our 10th Anniversary; and we can look forward to a fun celebration.  At this moment, we have kept our options open.  Give us your thoughts on what you think the celebration can be like.  I look forward to your suggestions; and if you like to be part of the organising committee, feel free to write to me.

This event will be held in Oct 2014 2015.

Moving from DayCare to SHC Orchids

shc-logo  orchid2  orchid1

If there is anything some of us are good at, it has to be dreaming.  Dreaming is a great activity.  First, we dream about Day Care.  For some of us, we have been with SilverHairsClub for 10 years.  Now, we think about what we will do when we get older, and less mobile.  We conceptualise a few ideas.

Next, we move on, and we conceptualise “SHC Orchids”.  A nice pretty word, less hostile and more welcoming than Day Care.  Essentially, the same activities as what we are doing now, but with more focused activities, suitable for SHC members who have difficulties with mobilty.  But, still working on the same platform to allow us to meet new friends and catch up with old friends.

Maybe SHC Orchids will expand to more Singaporean seniors.  Maybe arts and crafts, hobbies, indoor activities.  I dont know.  But, we will keep developing.

I like to encourage members who have arts and craft skills to come forward.  You can teach, conduct short courses to interested members, and we can expand your skills and training as part of SHC Orchids programmes.  You can charge a fee for your training, nobody would expect you to do so for free.

The concept of the Event Organiser EO

shc-logo  fun3

10 years ago, when the idea of SilverHairsClub started, I was thinking how to keep SHC alive for a long time. At that time, there were few activities, although the monthly gathering was what kept many members coming.  The concept of the Event Organiser EO developed over the years, and today, I see EOs as the key reason why the Club does not have a management committee.

Over the years, we have tried having a management committee, but this ideas has not been successful.  One reason which I have observed is our general membership tends not to respond to or accept a management committee.  Many have voiced staying on with the EO concept.  The other reason which some members have silently and behind the scene told me is “The reason why the management committee failed was because I did not enpower the committee members”.  There is some truth with this viewpoint.

However, over the years, I have come to accept that a management committee does not work in SHC, although we can see successful management committees with most other Clubs.  This explains why you see a less structured organisation within SHC in recent years,

Personally, I would like to see a committee work within SilverHairsClub, I am receptive to the committee idea, if someoneoffers to take the lead.  My business travel has made it almost impossible to spend more than a few days each month in Singapore.

In the meantime, what has worked so far is our EOs have kept SHC alive and going.

Please share your thoughts.  No right and no wrong.  You have your viewpoint.

What would you do if you are alone at home, and you had a serious fall?

fall2    fall1 I was with a few friends in Petaling Jaya last night.  My Malaysian friends have retired; and we discussed life during retirement, and getting old. Many of my friends were fit; they play golf, and travel extensively. Two weeks ago, I attended the wake of a long time friend of mine who has been with me in the newspaper industry for almost 30 years.  He was only 55, and he suffered a stroke, I understood no one knew about it, until it was too late.

Many of us are alone at some times of the day.  As for me, I travel a lot, staying in hotel rooms most days in a year.  Well, I sleep alone most nights.  How I wish I had company every night; unfortunately it is not the case.  Guys, I swear by what I say.

Seriously, dont meant to joke about being alone.  But, many of us are alone at times, at home, in the office, while travelling or at an unknown or familiar place. Husbands, wives, girlfriends are not around to help or may have switched off their phones.  We may have a fall; we may sleep through and not wake up.  We could have locked the room door.  The chest was getting breathless and the pain was spreading.  We may have only 10 minutes; and we dont know what to do.  The only thing we have is our phone or smartphone.

Really, guys and gals, what would you do?

A gathering for online investors, traders, date not confirmed

money3  invest2

Many members trade daily or frequently in Singapore, regional and US markets. We have not many of such activities, but a number of members have requested for such gatherings.  The most recent event was on US options.

Let’s try to have one such event soon.  Our Kenneth Tan has been very supportive, and he would help us hold this event at this condo’s function room.

  1. Date:  Haha, not confirmed.  Preference for a weekday as weekends maybe crowded.
  2. Venue:  Club’s function room, located near the swimming pool at Kenneth’s condo.
  3. Objective:  provide a platform for investors and traders to share what they are doing in stocks and shares, options, commodities.
  4. Entrance Fee:  will announce one we have an idea of numbers, what we want and costs.
  5. Number of pax:  Likely limited to the size of the function room; and on a first registered and paying basis.

Keep yourself updated.  Do let us know whether you prefer a weekend or weekday.  We will try to accommodate your preference.

Thank you Kenneth.

Introducing a weekend of adventure at Khao Yai National Park, 10-12 Oct 2015

khaoyai nat parkmap      khao-yai-national-park

Some of you have joined me at Khao Yai National Park. This will be the first event dedicated to SilverHairsClub members and children, aged 26 and above. We intend to hold this exciting event in Oct, from a Friday to a Sunday.

Khao Yai is located some 1.5-2 hours north-east of the old Donmuang airport. It is ideally suitable for young adults, beautiful waterfalls in October, a good place to look out in its natural habitats for wild elephants, deers, junglefowls, Asian bears, and bird watching.

I plan to stay in tents, which we can buy on our own or rent from the National Park. We will arrange a cook to handle our dinners and breakfast. Ideally suited for members and their adult children.

For ourselves, there are grape plantations, where we can enjoy fresh grapes, juices, red and white wines. Also a good local beef steak.

There is adventure land, with horse riding, ATVS, rides. Our adult kids will enjoy time together, and they will find btheir own time to mingle with one another and get to know one another better. Car racing, and other trills which we used to enjoy when we were young. Bring your sons and daughters along. You have to make the effort.

Quietly located, Khao Yai air is fresh, the morning is cool and a good time to spend with family. Important our children can mix with other children.

Golf. Loves, we can play as the famous “Forest hill” golf course, where many tee offs start from a height. It’s easy.

I intend to make it easy, as we will have helpers to make our trip fun, enjoyable and meaningful.

This trip is for you and your adult children. Our plan is to arrive at the airport, and head straight for Khao Yai, 2 hours away.

Confirmed date:  Meet at DonMuang airport at 10am morning and 10am at Survanabhumi airport (if a group is formed) on Sat 10 Oct and we arrive back at Don Muang airport on Mon 12 Oct at about 5pm.  Others can proceed to Bangkok for other activities.

More details will come up. Express your interest here.
