Signing in as Guest

Some SilverHairs have suggested the use of nicknames (not related to the real names).  As this is a members’ website, we encourage the use of real names.

However, for the benefit of new members, and to encourage confidence, I have been convinced that we could have "Guest" participation.  Let’s give this a try.  Guests are allowed to write new Posts and Comments.  Guests cannot register to participate in events.

Should we register SilverHairsClub? Step 2

On Oct 25, 2006,  we initiate the topic "Should we register SilverHairsClub?"  You can follow up the comments here:   https://silverhairsclub.com/2006/10/402

I have given this some thought and discussion to the feedback.  In short, I prefer to to keep the SHC as it is now.

As observed by members, there are advantages and benefits in having SilverHairsClub as a registered club in Singapore.  A registered club enhances recognition with other organisations, meets some of the concerns of public gatherings and enables SHC to collect funds to support membership and activities.

The SilverHairsClub is intended to be platform for over 45s to meet new and more friends.  This is its objective.  As a result, many SilverHairs have met new SilverHairs, and have their own new-found activities.  SilverHairs initiate their own sub-groups eg in cycling, nature walks, travelling, games, karaoke, IT training and online selling.

SHC is intended to prepare SilverHairs into the many years ahead.  Finding good friends is important. We must find the environment to meet our social needs.  SilverHairs have many needs.   As such, we support healthy and active activities, hobbies, discussion groups on retirement living, small business groups and continued work to supplement our SilverHairs expenses.  SilverHairs’ interests can be pretty varied.

My concern is the massive time, administrative and financial resources required to manage these activities under the umbrella of the club.  Unfortunately, I cannot manage all these new needs, as I travel 3/4 of the month.  But, I am prepared for changes, if someone volunteers to take the lead.  You just need to raise your hand.

As you have seen in 2006, we have the monthly gatherings.  All SilverHairs are informed on this website or a simple email.  All other activities and groups are formed on members’ initatives. There is flexibility and creativeness.

SilverHairsClub is small.  We will stay within the limits of the law.  As you know, our rules are pretty well observed by members; and these include no discussions on religion, sex, race, politics, direct selling and MLM. We will not collect membership fees.  Only costs incurred will be shared among participants.

In summary, I prefer to stay and run the way we are now.  You probably have not heard this view from me before.  Stay with the law, maintain the club taboos, no membership fees, support SilverHairs activities and keep the club simple and manageable.

I am sure there is agreement and disagreements.  Your views are most welcome.  Please share it.

Song Title: Yes we are SilverHaired (Jingle version)

We have the first SilverHairsClub jingle, by Composer and song-writer: Ronald Wi.  Thank you very much.

If you have Media Player or Real Player, click here to hear jingle.

Yes we are SilverHaired (Jingle version).
Yes we are Silver Haired,
With golden years ahead,
Friends we will like to make,
Sharing our warmth and light

So if you want some cheer,
Like the breeze from the sea,
You are always welcome her,
Come join our SHC

(Complete Song Version)
Sure as the sun will set,
As our youth starts to fade,
Friends start to drift afar,
The future seems cold and dark.

Everyday we seem to lose,
Whatever we done so far,
Nothing seems like before,
Values change each passing day.

Chorus:
What do we do from here,
Where can we find comfort for our cold,
Where can we find friends that will hear,
Of silver hairs and of growing old

Where can we find something free,
Just like the breeze from the sea,
Refreshing our tired souls,
Only from here in SHC.

So if you feel like me,
And need that cheer that is free,
A chat, a smile or just a pat,
To get you back on track.

Lots of friends like you and me,
Young and old in SHC,
Find silver, gold and is free,
Join us here for our company.

SilverHairs get SilverHairs program

The SilverHairsClub will keep growing.  Our numbers are small, and to keep our activities vibrant, we shall launch a year-end "SilverHairs get SilverHairs" program.

We have prepared enough SilverHairsClub T-shirts to give SHC members who invite other SilverHairs to join the club.  Until 31 Dec 2006, introduce 5 SilverHairs to join the club by sending us an email with fullname, mobile tel (optional) and your name.  Note:  Husband and wife, using one email address, considered as one member.

The SilverHairsClub T-shirts are high quality, with collar, and come in Dark Blue, Red and White.  There is a lady’s size too. and for men, the sizes are L, M and S.  The words "SilverHairsClub" is embroidered nicely on the left.  The T-shirt will come to you via post.

Surgery and patient care overseas

From requests to organise groups overseas for patient care, we are looking at organising a few interesting talks for SilverHairs, who are interested in knowing what are the advantages and costs in considering surgery and patient care overseas.  At the moment, we are looking out for reputable overseas international hospitals which are prepared to give us a presentation on this topic.

Obviously, there are pros and cons.  For those who are keen to listen, please drop your name here.

If you know of such a hospital, please share your contact.  I would assume the talks would be conducted next year, or sooner when more information is available.

If you are a member or ex-member of the medical profession, please let us know, so that you can help moderate or lead these talks.

Should we register SilverHairsClub? Step 1

A number of members have asked if SilverHairsClub is registered under the Registra of Societies.  Some see the registration as compliance with Singapore society laws, while others see the advantage of being recognised as an official group by corporations and government organisations.  Some members also feel SilverHairsClub should be a company, in view of its potential business opportunities.

When the idea was first mooted to find a platform for SilverHairs to meet new friends, I had not had any thought of registering the SilverHairsClub.  Considering retirement as an important issue in our region, I had thought we could just meet up at some cafes, and chat, share about our future plans so that we would not be lonely and that we can live meaningful SilverHairs years.

Those who feel strongly about having SilverHairsClub registered have requested that we should have a forum on this issue.  so, I am opening this topic for discussion.  Please share your thoughts.  We shall close and review the feedback on 31 Dec 2006.

Volunteers to teach “Selling/Auctions on the internet”

This repeats a Post by Terence on 3 Aug 06. It says "We have a few volunteers to teach and coach this topic.  There might be some of you who would like to offer the same service.   if you are experienced in selling on ebay, Yahoo or other auction sites, and willing to spend some time with other SilverHairs who may be interested, please raise your hands here.  Those with online payment experience also appreciated.
The small group would form among themselves in max 6 people.  The location will be their apartment/house, and they would have their own PC, broadband and digital camera.  Session 2 hours.
So, if you would like to volunteer, raise your hands here.  Hopefully, you will get to meet new friends too with common interests."

So far, 5 members had responded to do or assist in the teaching  with only 11 responded to learn. To all other members who wish to learn, dont feel shy to come forward and put your names here. We dont want you to be left behind in the digital divide.

Making use of our experience and knowledge

Many SilverHairs feel that our knowledge and experience expire when we retire.  Our jobs are replaced by younger people, who have just finished formal education.  With the current environment, many SilverHairs feel that we are no longer employable, and have to take up jobs beneath our experience and knowledge.

Some SilverHairs are lucky.  And they do not have to worry about a job during their SilverHairs years.  From the membership, I see more SilverHairs ladies than men are well prepared for the future.

But, for SilverHairs who need to have a job, what are the options?  Some of us do need a job to maintain our monthly expenses.  For others,  a job helps to pay for our desires to see the world.  And, of course, we have SilverHairs who simply enjoy being actively employed.

Complaining about the non-availability of jobs is not going to help.  It just makes us more unhappy.  Some SilverHairs have already taken up the positive step of taking up something for themselves.   We dont want to sit in the foodcourts from morning to evening.  Nor do we want to walk about the shopping centres from 10 am to 6pm.  Can we come up with some ideas to enjoy our retirement, and yet keep ourselves financially afloat?

Many SilverHairsClub members have expressed that we should do something in this area.  As a group, maybe we can do something.  We have years of experience and knowledge, developed over the years.  Let’s put our ideas here.  And, let’s respect every SilverHairs’s ideas. The more specific you are, the better.  No idea is a bad idea.

I would like to keep this topic alive, over the next two months.  At the end of Sept, we shall try to identify and summarise what we, as a group, can do for ourselves, in terms of jobs, and making use of our experience and knowledge.  I guess success will depend on what we finally do.

All SilverHairs are invited to participate.  And in line with SHC’s direction, let’s observe no religion, politics, sex, race, direct selling and MLM.

2GreenDots – a new project

Hi SilverHairs,

2GreenDots shopping mall is a very new project, prompted as a result of a number of SilverHairs wanting to have a place to offer their products and services.

The SilverHairsClub website is not suitable, as not everybody is interested in offering their products or services.  But the initial discussion groups were initerested, and do have products or services which they like to offer.  Of course, there was the physical shops, but high rents turn many off, not at a time when SilverHairs are looking to stretch the dollar.  Risks were also a concern.

A few sessions on e-auctions and small business groups were conducted by different small groups, in the last few months.  Besides the popular available internet auction sites, some groups felt the need to start an internet shopping mall.  A web specialist was engaged from India, and we now have a working internet Shopping mall.  We call it 2GreenDots Shopping Mall.  This is new, but it has been well tested.  It will also incorporate online payment systems.

For interested SilverHairs, we hope to give him/her a virtual shop.  If a SilverHairsClub member sees this as an opportunity which can bring fun and yet take him/her through the Silverhairs years, a shop name will be set up for him/her.  The idea is to do something meanful, big or small, as one enjoys his/her Silverhairs years.

We do not know if success or failure will hit us.  In the last one year, we had fleamarts, garage sales and small sales advertisement, but all these had failed.  But, from the wide experience of many SilverHairs, we know success or failure of 2GreenDots will depend on many factors.  But, there is no doubt we will give this a go, a strong go.

We target to officially launch 2GreenDots in Jan 2007.

First, we will form a starter group and later a management team with the knowledge and expertise in retail and media experience.

If you have an interest to be part of the starter discussion group, please send me an email with your thoughts.  The starter group will set the ground rules.  We will call a meeting during the 1st week of August.

Spring cleaning and unwanted things

By Asian living standards, Singapore families do enjoy a better lifestyle than many others around us. Some of us do have the good things in life eg toys for our children, English and Chinese books for the kids, spare radios and TVs, kitchen utensils, used spectacles we longer put on, and unwanted dresses, pants and T shirts.

During the coming spring cleaning, if your family has something unwanted in the store room, and you would like to give them to some other families who would need them, please SMS 9489-4360/email me.  I do carry them to Thailand, and give them to poorer families.  Please do not throw them away.

Thank you.
