Remember your 1st step?

Remember your first step?  emoticon

What a fuss everyone made then!  you continued to walk right on through
childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood, but somewhere along the way, like
most adults, you probably stopped walking so much.

In fact, the percentage of adults who spent most of their
day sitting increased.  Sedentary
lifestyles have been held partially responsible for the excessive poundage.  hahahaha

Walking
is one of the easiest, least expensive, most enjoyable, and most profitable
forms of exercise.

All you need is ….

A pair of comfortable walking shoes

Socks to keep your feet dryer and blister
free

Comfortable clothing – dress for the
weather

A small bottle of water

Add a hat, suncreen and sunglasses on a
sunny day.
and desire ….

Suffice to say that walking is certainly good! Many SHCians
had enjoyed the walks and made new friends….
if I continued, there’d be no time for you to start walking!

Monthly walks for SHCians are on Every 2nd Saturday of
the Month, once scheduled; Rain or Shine we Will be there!     emoticon

Thunder & lightning, we shall all, take cover, somewhere
in the vicinity to fellowship.

1st quarter of 2008, there will be 2 walks –

12Jan – Bishan Park & Lower
Pierce

09Feb – Gong Xi Gong Xi     (family
and friends “visitation walks”)

08Mar – Bedok Reservoir  (tentative)

**A week or 2 before each scheduled walk, relevant details
will be posted in SHC’s website.

Greetings fm the team – Charles Wee, Veronica Wong, Mary
Tan and ChristinaCL Chan

       We wish each of
you a

Monthly walk: 13th October 2007, Culmination

Greetings to all SHC members,

Our monthly walks for 2007 were conducted on the 2nd Saturday of each month, except February. It has been our pleasure to share some new as well as challenging routes this year.  We are delighted that many of you have enjoyed these trails.

As year end draws nearer by the day, let’s culminate this year’s monthly walks with yet another nostaligic walk, a journey through time, perhaps.

Majestic trees are the natural heritage of our Island.  They serves as important green landmarks of our Tropical Garden city.  Some trees take more than hundreds of years to mature.  The world’s largest rainforest is in the Amazon River basin, BUT the oldest rainforests are found in Singapore! and Malaysia.

That’s ,,, our Botanic Gardens! a dynamic and living monument.  The Gardens at its present site was founded in 1859.  It has come a long way evolving into a leading equatorial botanic garden of 52 hectares.  Today, the Gardens, which is more than a hundred-years old is a "star" visitors’ attraction!

It seems like yesterday, our walk at the Singapore Botanic Gardens but, as I scrolled through the past walks, it was rather a long way back…..Sept06.  Some had then, requested to take the trail again. Though many months late, here it is, to fulfill certain wish!

Come, Be Enchanted by our Gardens…..’lights off’ at midnight.  emoticon

Start Time: 4.15pm

Duration: approx 2.5 to 3 hours.

Date: 13 October 2007 (Saturday)

Meeting Point: Botanic Gardens @ Tanglin Gate, one of the major entrance. At the junction of Holland/Napier/Cluny Roads(traffic lights).

Getting there: by Buses via Holland Road: SBS  7, 105, 123, 174 and SMRT  75, 77, 106.  Alight at the bus-stop at the after US Embassy (after Tanglin Mall) OR if you are coming from the opposite direction, alight at Gleneagles.

Car Park Facilities: at Singapore Botanic Gardens’ Visitor Centre, Tanglin Gate and Public Parking along Tyersall Avenue.  Standard fees apply.

Within the Gardens, there is the Taman Serasi Foodcourt; the Halia Restaurant at the Ginger Garden (was told that it serves good food at a price) or head towards Orchard Road for dinner and to chill out.

Look forward to seeing you at this Last Walk of the Year.

Information Specially for all the new members:

Monthly walks are held every 2nd Saturday of the month, rain or shine we will be there!  Thunder & lightning, we shall all be hiding!

Dear all SHCians,

This month, together, let us scale our country’s only Mount, which is also one of the oldest park, MT Faber.

Some asked "can climb meh?"  Let me assure you, YOU CAN!     emoticon

Come along and you shall be pleasantly surprised when soon you reached the top of the Mount !

There are a few trails.  Marang Trail has been selected because of its location and that it has a combination — a route for an easier climb yet, the same route also provides a slightly different gradient for those who need a little more legwork.  NO back breaking, leg hurting trail like the one I had trudged long ago.

Let’s Get Physical!!! for 10 to 15mins  — a sky reach; an arch; a stretch perhaps, is what you need.

Then with nimble feet you shall rise up the Mount, to behold the panoramic view of the skyline, the southern part of Singapore and the southern islands.

This view shall take your breath away, not so much the climb!   emoticon

A ship in calm waters, nostalgic trails, treasures of history and a Jewel you will find; a conquestto boast!  2 hours on a Mount, as you linger… as the wind whispers ….emoticon

Start Time:  4.15pm  (ie., we start 15mins earlier, than normal time)

Date:  Saturday, 8th September ’07.

Meeting Place:  at the foothill of Mt Faber – Marang Trail ie., if you are coming via

(*) MRT or Bus: proceed to Basement 1, HarbourFront MRT Station, look for "Exit D", walk up to ground level, behold.. Mt Faber!     and I shall be waiting…

Getting there:

via MRT – HarbourFront MRT station, proceed to Basement 1…. see (*)

via Bus – SBS 10, 30, 61, 65, 80, 97, 100, 131, 143, 145, 166.    Tibs 855.

1.  alight at Vivo City, proceed to Basement 1…. see (*)

Fort Canning Walk on 14Jul07

Dear walkists,

Happy to hear that you have enjoyed Fort Canning, it is my pleasure.

The spice garden had drawn much interest.  It is one of the best I have seen in our sunny island, next time, shall provide more time for exploring it and other trails, that’s right, there is more …

The pix taken by Yew Kwong are uploaded:

 http://www.silverhairsclub.com/SHC/walking0707/

 Updates:

18Aug07 – an event for the Cyclists & Walkists at Pulau Ubin, look out for the posting.

08Sep07 – the scenic Mount Faber climb!

Walk of the Month – July 2007

Dear SHC members,

Let’s take a leisurely stroll back in time, to the era of the five kings and the golden age of 14th century Singapore

The Malay locals when they received Raffles pointed him to a hill called Bukit Larangan (Forbidden Hill).  Around 1860, the colonial government turned this hill into a fort.  From that time until the 1970s, Fort Canning was used as a military base – first by the British, the the Japanese and lastly by the Republic’s armed forces.

Fort Canning Park – I am sure many would know where it is but perhaps just like me, had visited it only to attend wedding receptions, events and concerts.

For those who tarry to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the park, there is a lot to discover and much to behold.  There were many marvelous looking trees and interesting fauna. Majestic trees, a ‘heritage tree’ truly gnarled with age!  It is said that the park is not only a gathering place for birds but also a home and hunting ground to populations of squirrels, bats and lizards.

The Park has several main entrances/exits.  We shall attempt to cover the entire Park in about about 2 hours.

Date: 14th July 2007 (Saturday)

Place: Fort Canning Park

Start Time:  we start the walk at 4.30pm

Meeting point: Penang Road, Park Mall (near the Lift Lobby)

Getting there:  Best mode of transport is by MRT – Dhoby Ghaut Station.

By bus – bus-stop opposite Park Mall (Penang Road is a 1-way traffic) 124, 162, 167, 171, 174, 175, 190, 502, 7, 14, 16, 36, 65, 77, 106, 111.

My email: chrischan5575@yahoo.com

Rain or shine, see you guys there.

Stay cool, Be cool! emoticon

SHC Monthly Walk in June

Date/Time: 9 June 2007.  4.30pm

Park:  Sembawang Park
Meet Point:   Sembawang Park terminal bus stop.(just next to park).
Going there:

  • By Bus:  SBS Bus 882 from Interchange, Sembawang MRT Stn.  Bus stop next to Sun Plaza.
  • By car: Ample Parking Space.

Leading the Walk:  SMLee has kindly agreed to help out.

Attraction:  Bottle Tree Village -The Bottle Tree Village is located at the end of   Jalan Mempurong and is famous for its Bottle Trees (Brachychiton rupestris)  which have been specially flown in from Queensland, Australia by the owner Mr. Alex Neo and Mr. Colin Chia. Apart from the unique trees, other Australian flora  can be spotted in the surroundings. An eatery, Sembawang Eating House, is located within this Village, serving traditional Chinese stir-fry dishes. (www.bottletree.com)
Sembawang Park, a 15 hectare. One of the few parks in Singapore with a natural beach, the Wak Hassan Beach, this park is a heaven for city dwellers who are tired  of the never-ending concrete buildings and sky-scrapers. It’s a popular spot for campers as well as families who wish to spend an idyllic day by the beach (Johore Straits)
One can dine at the Beaulieu House, built in 1910, which was the residence of  Admiral Sir Geoffrey Layton .  A wide range of fauna and flora awaits visitors, ranging from the spectacular Cannon Ball tree (Couroupita guianensis) to the many species of birds which have made the park their nesting grounds.
NB: Charles organized Sembawang Park walk in Aug. 2006. Some of the earlier SHC members have joined us in the walk.  Hope SMLee able to show us the Simpang Kiri connector or the Sembawang Hot Spring for good luck. Another good news is that the cyclist group and the walking group combine to have it on one day in Pulau Ubin.  Probably in August. We have unanimously nominated Yew Kwong to be in charge.  Look out for his  posting on SHC website. Akan Datang.  Also Akan Datang the photos for the walk in May.

Have given to Terence weeks ago to post on website.  He must be busy and excited with the Batam trip so a little delay from him.  We are a forgiving and understanding bunch.

MONTHLY WALK – APRIL 07

Dear Walkists,

Thanks to those who had responded: via direct emails and on the website…. see you on 14April 07.

For those who drives – to address your concerns as to where
to park your cars:

park at Ghim Moh, near block 12A.    OR

The MRT track at Clementi runs along road named: Commonwealth
Avenue West.
Park your car at any carpark nearer to Clementi MRT station, as it will
be easier for you to find it later – take note of the relevant HDB Block
#.  I will be able to guide you back
there.

Clementi and Ghim Moh are 2 stations away: “Clementi – Dover
– Buona Vista.

Alternatively, you may take a bus.  Several buses from Clementi do pass by Ghim
Moh. However, I believe for most drivers, it will be more complicated for you
to commute by bus. You know what I mean, no offence   {smile}

Stay coool  emoticon

MONTHLY WALK – APRIL 07

Date: 14th April 2007 (Saturday)

Walking Trial: Ulu Pandan Park Connector

  • Start Time:  4.30pm
  • Meeting point: Ghim Moh Block 12A

Getting there:

  • by MRT – Buona Vista MRT Station: pass Control station, straight down the next escalator.  Then turn left walk thro’ the tunnel, it is sheltered all the way to Ghim Moh Block 12A.
  • by Bus – Bus service nos. 92, 100 & 111.  After the bus turns into Ghim Moh, alight immediately, walk against traffic flow and Block 12A is on the opposite side.

Introduction: The Park Connector Network is an island-wide network of linear open spaces that link up major parks, nature sites and housing estates in Singapore. When the entire network is completed, it will form a green network, spanning over 300 km across the whole island, making it convenient to travel from park to park.

For this month, we have selected one of the park connectors ie., the Ulu Pandan Park Connector.  It is about 9 km long. The T-shaped park connector has three end points: at Bukit Batok East Avenue 2 (near Bukit Batok Nature Park), the Ayer Rajah Expressway near Pandan Reservoir, and Commonwealth Ave West near the Buona Vista MRT station.  Stretches of the Ulu Pandan Park Connector are fringed with lush landscaping beside a canal, while other areas have been left virtually untouched.

No worries, we are not walking the entire  9km  {smile}.  Be assured it is a leisure walk.

The track is paved, making it an enjoyable and safe walk or even for cycling.  Do look up among the trees and shrubs, you would probably see colorful birds and butterflies flitting among the greenery.

Recently, someone had written to the ‘Forum’ (as Ghim Moh flats are to be redeveloped soon) commented: why disturbed…the connector has served as a tranquil retreat for a great many neighboring residents…to start building on such a piece of well-used, mature green lung would be a shame.

So, let’s get our feet on it before another stretch of lush greenery is gone!

We shall curtail our walk at Clementi Avenue 4.  For the growling tummies, at the nearby blocks of flats are some coffee-shops or walk another 10mins to the Central where there are more selection of food at both coffee-shops and food centre.  I heard there is also a small joint serving Japanese food (near NTUC).  The Clementi MRT station is in the vicinity.

Note: For those who wish to continue the walk, you may proceed all the way to Jurong East.

See you there!   Stay cool!emoticon

Great Weather.  A challenging walk and thankyou to all who have emailed and all                                            who supported the walk. No serious casualty except a lady trip over a small branch.   No                                  serious injuries and no chance for lau hero to flex muscles.  No see ice cream pedlar                                                or hor hia ti (heavens know what’s tis??).   Disappointed – No early release for                                                      them for good behaviour.  So, in conclusion, what works here does not apply in Hades.

Monthly Walk – 2007

Just being a wee bit nostalgic, looking back, we, the walkist did well.  In Feb06, Charles initiated the 1st walk and if I recalled right, there were only 4 of us and now, there are more than 20 walkists.

Want to say "Thank you" to all who came from all corners of Singapore to participate.  Glad you have enjoyed the walks as much as we have whilst planning them.  Also most importantly, hope each of you have made some new friends – This is what it is all about   smile, smile

I am going to sneak you in for a preview of the first 3 months of 2007:

13Jan     intend to coincide with the forthcoming Potluck event.  Venue: awaits                             Terence’s advice.

10Feb    Let’s have a Break ie., no walk for the group

10Mar    Bukit Timah Hill

…new trails, old trails, scenic trails, let your eyes "capture" the sights besides your camera and, more challenging trails like the Treetop, Pulau Ubin   (haha)

There is 1 request and we need your help:

Normal Start time of walk: 4.15pm (strongly encourage all to be on time as we do not wish to keep those who are punctual waiting).  There will be some walks due to circumstances beyond our control; need to start off earlier as well.  so, please note each Start Time, Be Punctual.

NB:

Scheduled walks (2nd Saturday monthly) will not be cancelled unless it is a no through way, definite "no go" situation eg., flooding, landslide… (just joking).

Detailed information for each walk will be posted in this website about 2 weeks before scheduled date, please check website regularly

To each of you and your loved ones :

a JOYOUS Christmas, a HAPPY & PROSPEROUS 2007  from Charles, Veronica & Christina.

so long farewell I’ve got to go…….. see you next year.  Till then, stay Cool!

From meeting point, it will take 15-20min walk to reach the Boardwalk skirting the water edge. You can fill up your water bottle and visit the rest rooms on the way to the Boardwalk. The walking route  is scenic, serene and  beautiful on a clear day and you  will have a chance to walk through the wooden "maze" (built over the reservoir) to reach the boardwalk.  We can have a photoshot here. We take the Chemperai Trail which is 20-25 min walk.  Midway, we pay homage to a tree because we have to bend our body to cross it and then we take the Jering (name of a malay fruit) Trail, another 10-15min.
We will reach the  Island Golf Course and then we return via the Jogging track provided the weather is fine. The jogging track is undulating and can be  muddy or  slippery at certain spots if it rains.
The total time walking time is slightly less than  2 hours.  This will be a different walk from last month’s  Kallang walk where the path is clean and surrounding is bright.
After the walk, we can have a drink/snack at the Reservoir café or have dinner at Kopitiam in  Upper Thomson, near Sin Ming Road.,  or at Toa Payoh MRT station.   Bus 157 goes to TPayoh central  MRT.     Bus 165, 166 to Upper Thomson.
Those adventurous and needing more exercise can walk to Kopitiam  (another 15 minutes) through WestLake
housing estate & Lakeview Condominium.  The choice is yours.

Leave your expensive "Guess & Versace" pants at home.
Wear track shoes (no sandals/slippers),  bring an umbrella (or poncho) and water bottle. The year end months are usually wet and we are in the catchment area.
Do you know what is  “nature helicopters, feathered friends at water edge, alien invaders, lord of the sky”.
Come and join the walk and find out for yourself – enjoy nature’s treasures.
Those who would like to join the walk,  please contact me, Veronica Wong
Hope to See you !

30th Sep Walk @ Botanical Gdns

Yesterday, was raining and perhaps pouring in the late morning. So, understand some were unable to come… it is alright.  Just wish to thank those who came, though, that’s the spirit!

There was no ‘sun’, cool to walk and the Garden did not disappoint from the comments I heard.  After these few walks we have had, Singapore, do have beautiful Gardens/Parks to chill out too.

Well, agree with Benson that it is not easy to incorporate photography with leisure walk as "Focus" is the key word (requires Focus on key objects!) However, still wish to thank him for his effort.

Benson has offered to post the photos of the walk in this website.  So, all those who have snapped some photos, please email soonest to Benson: kohbenson@yahoo.com

Also, wish to thank Charles for showing up even though his toe was hurting….  appreciate it!

ps: Walks planned are never cancelled, we still meet to fellowship.

Monthly Walk: September06 @ the Botanic Gardens

Date: 30th September 2006 (Saturday)

Place: Botanical Gardens

Start Time:  we start the walk at 4.30pm, takes at least 2 to 3 hours

Meeting point: at Botanical Gardens-Tanglin Gate, one of the major entrance ie., junction of Holland and Napier Road. Next to this entrance is a bus stop (behind it was where the former Taman Serasi Food centre/Gleneagles Hospital) and across the overhead bridge is a bus stop too (behind is Embassy of USA).

Getting there:

<!–[if !supportLists]–>1.      <!–[endif]–>similar buses serves both direction ie., SBS 7, 105, 123, 174 and TIBS 75, 77, 106.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>2.      <!–[endif]–>From Orchard MRT, exit to Orchard Boulevard Road bus-stop, these bus services can be found. Counting from next stop after boarding,  I think you alight at the 4th stop.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>3.      <!–[endif]–>OR you may start the walk! from Orchard MRT exit at Orchard Road or Isetan Scotts Shopping Centre walk against traffic flow towards Tanglin/Napier Road.

<!–[if !supportEmptyParas]–>

I believe many of us have been to the Gardens, perhaps quite some time ago.  Let’s take a nostalgic walk down memory lane —  from Tanglin Gate stroll along Tanglin Gate Road towards the ever serene swans gliding in Swan Lake, you will be mesmerized by the beauty of hues in bloom along the way; up a slight gradient to Sundial Garden, Bonsai, and down to the Ginger Garden.  Let’s take a little time to enjoy the beautiful Ginger blooms. They are so beautiful! and the small waterfall, is refreshing.  Next, one gets a panoramic view as the Symphony Lake is in sight; also, some water lilies and lotus are in bloom! (I hope all the flowers stay in bloom till our we visit  emoticon). Here we can linger longer or adjourn to the View Terrace, which is a short distance away, where there is shade and a small waterfall, as well.  As we stroll along, all of a sudden it seems you have arrived at a miniature desert, a journey through time …….  to proceed further or turn back to where there is food! Decision? … decision? Let’s take it from there.

There is a refreshment kiosk at Ginger Garden and toilet facilities.  At the end of the walk, we can have dinner at the newly opened Taman Serasi Foodcourt or the Halia Restaurant at the Ginger Garden (was told that it serves good food at a price).

The Garden closes at midnight so, relatively safe to stay (if you choose to) till the lights come on.

Put on your walking shoes, come and enjoy the lush foliage @ the Gardens.
