A walk along the rustic Changi Point coastline is not to be missed!
Changi Point provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.

A charming boardwalk takes you through lush greenery and undulating terrain along the rugged
western coastline, while a meandering waterfront walkway along the eastern beachfront creates
an interesting tropical experience of sea and sand. Viewing decks and pavilions along the way
enable you to pause, soak in the sea breeze and enjoy the excellent views out at sea.

The Changi Point Coastal Walk is divided into six segments, each with its unique experience :
– Sunset Walk, has beautiful view of the sunset, hence its name
– Kelong Walk, reminisce the good old kelong days as you tramp on wooden stilts
– Cliff Walk takes you through the rugged western coastline
– Sailing Point Walk, enjoy views of the sailboats and the expanse of the sea
– Beach Walk, a relaxing coastal walk along sandy beaches, along the way pause, soak in the sea breeze and enjoy the views out to sea
– Creek Walk, appreciate the views, sights and sounds of the bumboat activities ferrying the public to and from the offshore islands.

At the end of the walk, those who wish to have dinner, there’s the Changi Village hawker centre where there are various food stalls,

In 1971, the first email was sent. Before that, we write on a piece of paper, put in an envelope with an address, go to the Post Office to buy the stamps and post it. It may take about 2 weeks to reach our friends or love ones.

Though the above is still available, we now has a better and more efficient way to communicate. We call this “E-Communication”.

With E-Communication, we can communicate through emails (and other means) and your friends or love ones will receive your “letter” almost instantly.

I have always wondered what I will be doing on most days when I have difficulties in walking, when I am lonely and when I grow old.  My time will come.  But, not yet, I can still walk, I can still work, and I like to work for as long as my legs allow me. Of course, soon or later, I cannot work; but I want to keep myself active, and maybe do some volunteer work.  That’s if I have the money to live through my SilverHairs years.

A couple of days ago, I visited a privately-run  daycare centre in Australia. It has a size of about 400 sqm.  It opens Monday to Friday 10.30am to 3.00 pm.  The Daycare is run by some fulltime staff and some volunteers.  It has a good size kitchen that prepares food and drinks for the elderlies that come to the centre.

The Daycare has a program, with different activities each day eg singing, poetry, crafts, games, magic show, indoor golf, …..  The activities are organised by the full time staff.  The elderlies, all of them, require some help in moving around, and thus not bed-ridden.  The daycare accepts elderlies who are not suffering from contagious diseases, dimentia, and mental illnesses.  They live within a certain distance from the day-care and are picked up by a van driver from their residence. They arrive at the daycare at 10.30am each day, in a specially designed van.

The kitchen services the daycare and cooks the meal of the day, as well as prepares hot beverages and biscuits twice a day. The kitchen is run by a full time staff.  Volunteers assist in the kitchen, serves the elderlies and generally clean up the place after lunch.

While at the daycare, elderlies get to play games, learn a craft, enjoy singing, do some gardening and follow the program of the day.  Many elderlies are lonely and they do not want to stay at home.  Their children prefers they go out, keep active and mix with other friends. At the end of the day, the elderlies are happy, and look forward to meeting other elderlies on other days.

I spoke with the staff of the daycare centre.  The daycare employs some full time paid staff who administrates the centre, organises the activities and the daycare operation which includes picking up the elderlies from and to their homes.  The volunteers help with interacting with the elderlies, keeps the place clean and tidy and other odds and ends. The centre is self funded, and it survives based on collections from the elderlies.  At the end of each day, the centre collects between AUD 25 – 30 from the elderlies.  This includes home-daycare centre transfers, a main meal, two tea-breaks, activities and program as per published schedules, plus a healthy day interacting with other elderlies.

I am not sure if the daycare centre is privately owned or rented. But, I see it as located within a quiet residential community. The daycare pays for maintenance, lightings and water tilities and upkeep of the building.

I am not sure how daycare centres are operated in Singapore; but I see some silver linings in a daycare centre.

1. There are opportunities for seniors and elderlies to use the services of a privately daycare centre.
2. Full time seniors get to work and get paid in a daycare centre, not a home or a hospital.
3. Opportunities for seniors to volunteer some time to interact with elderlies who are lonely, chatty, fun and need someone to talk to.

I think each of us has a different vision of what we will do when we have difficulties walking, cannot leave our homes on our own or meet friends without assisted transport or feel lonely while our children are working to earn a living.  Many of our children would hope we can spend some time outside to get some fresh air, meet our regular friends and have our regular lunch.

AndrewK and myself have been considering setting up an exotic food group for some time. We noticed that so far we had only men participants. So, now, we decide to take the group meeting further. We would like to start a “Men’s group” and we will call this group the “Turtle Soup Group”.

Both Andrew and TerenceS will be the group co-administrators. Turtle Soup Group will be open to all SilverHairsClub men, who have Whatsapp in their mobile application. This group has the objective to hunt for exotic food anywhere, meet when we find an accepted place at an agreed date and time.

We will try not to have many detours in our objectives. Essentially, it will be a men’s group.

To keep the group alive and meaningful, all participants must participate and not remain silent for the whole calendar month. Turtle soup members who are not active will be delisted. Participants can also delist themselves from “Turtle Soup Group” anytime.

Participants who have intentions to sell health products, discuss MLM, political issues, are advised to seek other discussion groups. However during “Turtle Soup Group” outings, we will let our hairs down as long as general participants accept.

We are the product of the choices we made during our journey through life. Some would have more regrets to share than happiness. We blame our parents, our lack of education or circumstances why we are a failure.

Let’s me start by enacting a real life situation. A close friend of mine age 63 met a fair lady from Myanmar, she was 42, divorced and have a 25 years son who is working. She run a beauty saloon with a younger sister and stay in her own 4 storey terrace house.  After a three months whirlwind encounter, she ask him to marry her. My friend was ecstatic, she was sexy and young and this may be a golden opportunity. My advice to him was to be wary, maybe she just using you to get a better life here. You never know that once you sign the dotted line, you will start bleeding and never to recover.

The hustle and buzzle of Chinese Lunar New Year will end on 5th March. After feasting on all the sumptuous goodies during this festive period, let us all get ready to burn off some excess calories by joining our next monthly nature walk.

The walk will cover the area of Lower Pierce Reservoir, the second oldest reservoir in Singapore. On the boardwalk, we will meander through the matured secondary rain forest where there are numerous rubber trees and oil palms. Apart from the flora and fauna, there are birds, wild boars, monkeys, squirrels, mini monitor lizards, spiders etc.

At the end of the walk, we will aim for the Casuarina Curry Restaurant for the famous crispy roti prata.

Note: Bring water bottle, caps, umbrella and insect repellent. Do wear comfortable walking shoes.

Our Prime Minister has recently gone for his prostate cancer surgery. He is another example of how the elderly is more easily inflicted with cancer.
If he can get cancer twice in his life time what are our chance ??

I have reviewed and heavily edited a very thorough research paper done in UK to be of interest, relevance and wake up call for us SHC members

One in two people will develop cancer at some point in their lives , according to the latest forecast.

There will “never be one single magic bullet” to cure all cancers and age is the biggest risk factor for most forms of the disease.

The new figure, which replaces the previous of one in three, is the most accurate forecast to date from Cancer Research UK .

Prevention must also play a role in the effort required to reduce the impact of the disease in coming decades, the charity said.

But as more people benefit from improved healthcare and longer life expectancy, the number of cancer cases is expected to rise.

This new research estimating lifetime risk replaces the previous figure, calculated using a different method, which predicted that more than one in three people would develop cancer at some point in their lives.

The charity said age is the biggest risk factor for most cancers, and the increase in lifetime risk is primarily because more people are surviving into old age, when cancer is more common.

The lifetime cancer risk for women (47.55%) is lower than that of men (53.5%), while the combined lifetime risk is 50.5%.

According to the previous method of calculation, i n 1980 the combined risk was 27.2%, in 1990 it was 32.7%, in 2000 it was 37.1% and in 2010 it was 41.8%. The charity believes that the old method of calculation underestimated the risk.

Lifetime cancer risk is also expected to increase further in the future.

While the biggest risk factor is age, other lifestyle factors include smoking, obesity, diet, tanning and sunburn, overdiagnosis, lack of exercise and child-bearing patterns.

Just over a quarter of all deaths are caused by cancer, so while one in two people will develop cancer at some point, it is still believed that around one in four people will die from cancer.

We’re living longer and that means we’re more likely to develop a range of age-related health issues.

How near a cure for cancer is ?, The research said: “There will never be one single magic bullet that treats … cures all cancers. I just don’t … I cannot foresee a time when that’s going to be the case. But already we’re able to cure a number of cancers now.”

There are more than 200 different types of cancers and they are all quite different.

The single biggest thing that affects whether a patient is cured is whether their disease is caught early enough..

Too many cancers are diagnosed very late and once they’re more advanced it becomes much harder to cure. We can treat them, we can extend life but it becomes much harder to cure if we’re catching the cancers very late,”

“Cancer is primarily a disease of old age, with more than 60% of all cases diagnosed in people aged over 65. If people live long enough then most will get cancer at some point.”

Breast cancer is the most common form in women, prostate cancer is the most common form in men, and bowel cancer and lung cancer are common in both sexes.

Cases of cancer are likely to rise with an ageing population – so the focus is on earlier diagnosis, improving care and tackling preventable cancer.

Another separate study said 30% of cancer happen to the most fit and healthy person. This sadly is term “biological badluck” due to healthy cell mutation

We are going to revisit Sungei Rengit before it becomes and transformed into a Petroleum Hub.

Our journey begins from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Tg Pengelih jetty. It is about 18km from jetty to Sungei Rengit town.

The area’s landscape is changing rapidly, the tranquility scenery is fast disappearing, very soon the town may also be demolished.

This is a 2D1N event (21-22 Mar 2015)

I am organizing another 2-sessions course on Movie Making using Microsoft Windows Movie Maker program. It will be on 11/3 & 12/3 (Wednesday & Thursday) from 2PM to 5PM. The course can only accept a maximum of six participants. I already have three registered and can take in another two or three more.

Those interested are requested to attend a briefing and also to confirm in writing that you are coming and would like to be registered. Details of the briefing session are as follows:

Date: 07-03-2015 (Saturday)
Time: 3PM to 5PM
Venue: City Hall Food Court (MRT – City Hall)
Meeting Place: Just outside ticket gates @ City Hall MRT
We will start walking to food court @ 3.05PM.
