let’s celebrate Hari Raya Puasa this July

This year, Hari Raya Puasa is on Wed 6 July 2016. It is a public holiday, and is celebrated at the end of the Ramadan month of fasting. It is also known as the festival of Eid or as Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Hari Raya means the ‘grand day of rejoicing’ and, in Singapore, it is a big Muslim festival that recognises the demonstration of self-restraint during Ramadan, and symbolises purification and renewal. It is a time of forgiveness and children often visit their parents. From the 20th day of Ramadan, oil lamps are lit in homes until the end of the festival. For Hari Raya Puasa, people decorate their homes and put on new clothes. The men wear Baju Melayu (a loose shirt with trousers) with kain samping (a short sarong), while the Baju Kurung is often worn by women. Early in the day on Hari Raya Puasa, Muslims go to the mosques for prayers. During the afternoon, families and close friends gather together for a thanksgiving feast where forgiveness and blessing is sought from one another. Duit raya, green envelopes containing gifts of money, are often given to children and the elderly then everyone enjoys the food specialties such as beef rendang, satay, ketupat and lontong followed by cookies, cakes, biscuits, sweets and pineapple tarts. The customary greeting is ‘Selamat Hari Raya’, and celebrations of Hari Raya Puasa extends for three days, up to a month.

We have not had a Hari Raya Puasa celebration and gathering before, and I am thinking this year, we shall hold one event during the month of July.
Let’s open to members for ideas.  We shall firm our ideas by 30 Jun 2016.

Let’s bring the Baycity Rollers to SHC

The Bay City Rollers are a Scottish pop band whose popularity was highest in the mid 1970s. They were worldwide teen idols.

In 1973, “Saturday Night” was produced for the band. By early 1975, The Baycity Rollers saw a successful UK tour, which prompted newspaper headlines about the rise “Rollermania”.  Bay City Roller fans had a distinctive style of dress, comprising calf-length tartan trousers and tartan scarves. In 1976, the group released “I Only Want to Be with You” which I am sure many Silverhairs have heard and danced to.

Where were you then?  In school, just finishing your National Service, dating your first love or feeling sweet 16.  Let’s bring back memories of the mid 70s.  English songs, pop music, London, Edinburgh, top UK charts, SATURDAY night and I only wanna be with you.

Yes, we should have a band and teeny idol singers to match.  And an English setting at the British Club to bring back the atmosphere.  And, our guests will be anybody and everybody over 45.

This is still a dream.  And if you share in the same dream, please share your thoughts.

3 recommendations to hold our monthly gatherings

shclogo300    monthly meeting  monthly mtg3

Three places have been identified as possible venues to hold our regular SHC monthly gathering.  There are:

  1. Lee Kong Chian Food court – Basement 1.
  2. HarbourFront Food court – 4th floor, located at NEL
  3. SMU food court – located at Circle line

Thank you to the members who have suggested these places.  Ideally, we are looking for a place which does not require us to commit to a certain number of pax.  The venue should be located close to a train station.  Food and prices should be varied, so that we can cater to different needs.  The place should be relativelyquiet during the hours of 5pm to 8pm.

We will make the decision based on your comments.

Victor Khor will likely be the EO for the March 2015 monthly gathering. Let’s keep in touch until Victor has it all planned up.

Please share your suggestions and thots here.

SHC monthly gathering – Fri 6 Feb 2015

febmtg1  febmtg4

Update:  The cafe seems to have been closed.  This post is not valid for now.

One of the most important activity in SilverHairsClub is the monthly gathering. It is an Suddexcellent opportunity for members to meet one another.

The key agenda of the monthly gathering is to meet one another, for all kinds of reasons and excuses. It is the after-the-monthly-gathering that is equally exciting. We leave it to you.

This time, we have a fellow member who has volunteered to ring the ship’s bell, and buy the first drink for all members who register for this event. We will work the details later.

The event will be held as below:
Hans Cafe and Restaurant,
Upper Pickering Street,
Near MRT is Clarke Quay
Time: 5pm to 8pm
Date: Fri 6 Feb 2015

Registration is required. Please bring along your home-made nametag. The drink voucher will be given to you, for registered members only.

Plse put this date into your diary. And on this note, and on behalf of SilverHairsClub, I like to thank the kind member.

Sat afternoon at Jayleen Hotel, Carpenter Street ~17 Jan 2015

jayleen hotel2  jayleen hotel jayleen hotel 3  new year 2015  SilverHairsClub shall continue to look for places where members can gather together, to get to know one another.  We shall make effort to enable Singaporeans, over 45, to meet new friends.

Two members, SS James Tan and Andrew Koh showed me the Jayleen Hotel at Carpenter Street to evaluate their lunch setup and facilities.  We found the place suitable for a Saturday afternoon gathering. The lunch buffet is reasonable, and workable.   There is also a cosy living area and dining area.  Convenient is the large carpark, just outside the hotel.

The hotel has a reasonable music system.  Although loudness will be limited because of closeness to the hotel rooms, we may be able to use the music system.  We can have slow or soft ballads, and old fashion singing.  We can also have our own musician, who would have to bring along our own keyboard or guitar.  Accompanied singing is allowed, altho we have to set the sound level to 3.  10 is the loudest.  I am thinking of some old school songs to agitate our school days memories.

If we start at 12nn, we can end around 4pm.  This would be a Saturday.  We are looking at a price level of $17 per pax.

  • date: Sat 17 Jan 2015
  • place: living and dining room of Jayleen hotel.
  • time: 12nn – 4pm
  • cost:  $17 per pax (inclusive of a buffet and coffee/tea till 4pm)
  • Music and low volume singng – we can plug into the sound system if we bring a keyboard and musician.  If you can help to liaise this part of the work, it would be nice.
  • Pl pay to POSB Current Acct 951-00428-6 (ref number and date of transaction to be indicated on this blog)

Menu is subject to change:

  1. Diced Chicken Thigh in House Special Chicken Rendang Gravy
  2. Sayur Lodeh (Mixed Vegetable)
  3. Battered Finger Fish Fillet, with Mayonnaise sauce
  4. Mixed Omelette

How many places in the world would you like to see before the legs say No? Europe and Eurail.

travel2travel1travel3

Travel has always been a top activity of SilverHairs.  We have worked all our lives, and we have not seen so many places. Some of us yean to go to Bangkok every year.  I go every month, and it is still exciting.  But there are so many other places.  There is China, India, Callifornia, Mexico (World Cup comng), Artic cruise, around Vancouver, etc, etc.  No end, our dreams and our pockets will decide.

An European Train travel 14 countries, How about Genting, Penang, or even Bali, or even Perth, Brisbane.  Too many, where do you want to go.  Your wishes, make it come true.

All your travel dreams will work well, if planned in advance, and you go with friends, people you know.  Maybe you want to go to Europe next year, but dont know who to go with.  Well, there is always someone who wants to go to Europe too.  Talk about it.  Let’s others know where you would like  go.  Maybe, both of you will pair up.

Well, we will set a date where all interested in travel can come together.  We will gather you in groups, by cities or groups, or …. The rest will be up to you. So, speak up and register your interest here.

This event is strictly for SHC members only.  However, you go with finally, is up to you.  Have fun.

Eurail global passes, click here:  http://www.eurail.com/eurail-passes/global-pass.  Organise yourself in groups of 4.

Sharing about the markets. “Investment and US market gathering” – 17 May 2014 at Oxford Hotel, Skylight Cafe (3.00 pm sharp – 5.30 pm)

monthly meetingstock market2stock market3stock market1   I have better put this down in writing before I leave Singapore next week.  Then i shall be away for a few weeks.  Some of you think, wow, I come up with marvel ideas and interesting events.  Honestly, my upstairs is quite crowded, or I rather say clouded.  The real ideas come from SilverHairs members.  These are the members who have enjoyed the friendship they had made from SHC events.  They want to help others come out of their apartments. I feel very good and satisfied when someone calls me and say, Terence, you wont believe it.  I had a tea party this after, and then followed by a movie, and ….  Well I cannot enjoy this rush, but many have.

Back to May.  What shall we have?  Do you know how many members spend their waking up hours as well as sleeping hours?  Yes, in the financial markets, buying and selling local equities, European and US too.  Recently, some made money from the fall in penny stalks. Others made a bundle.  The typical question is always “What tips do you have”.  For some, it will be how to sign up and with who, which ….

How about we have a day or late afternoon?  May be a Saturday afternoon.  The experts come and share.  The regulars talk with other regulars.  The newbies, come hear from the other newbies.    Share what you are doing in the US markets,in the European markets, what’s new.

We will gather in small groups.  Maybe by markets.  maybe by the type of markets – currencies, stocks, bonds, …..Tell us here what you are interested here.  You will be surprised how many will come up to help you.

Somewhere in the middle of April, we will come up with a place, if you dont say anything, I may consider suggesting Hans.

Picnic by the sea, with potluck, no program in plan – 26 April Sat in April Monthly gathering

picnic6Pguitaristpicnic2 picnic5

(Click on the pictures for a better enlarged view)

Most of us love to have friends whom we can get together.  We all love activities.  We want to join activities. And we want to meet new people and catch up with old friends. Since the Club started, I have always love to see SilverHairs meet up with other old SilverHairs, and meet new ones too. Let’s see how fast this program catch up with our membership.

First of all, I have found a place to hold a beachside potluck.  I accidentally found the place while doing an evening walk.  There are new BBQ pits around.  It is located somewhere in Changi, near some river mouth.  There is a jetty nearby, with some boats there, to ferry people to the islands.  The place looks new.  I have seen many Malay families gather there with tents, home cook food, doing cycing there.

I like to organise a big picnic there,  Once I have identified the place, I shall indicate the date and the time, likely an afternoon 2-6 pm.  And, of course, if my diary is free from any travel. Likely date:  within April 2014. Somehow, I had cut down my travel after the MH370 issue.  No program, food or drinks has been planned.  Let’s build the program from here.

All members are invited.  Non-members are also invited.

  1. Members – $10
  2. Non-members – $15
  3. If you cook a dish for 4-5 people (not buy) eg curry, stew, I shall discount $8
  4. If you bake a cake, or make a dessert for at least 4-5 people (not buy), I shall discount $8.
  5. If you lead an activity eg a singalong, I shall discount $5.
  6. If you register yourself personally for this event, there is a discount of $1.
  7. If you bring along another member or non-member of the opposite sex, there is a discount of 10%.

Let’s start.  Run wild with your ideas.  If ok, I shall say yes, If no, I shall say no within 24 hours.

Update:

  • Date:  Sat 26 April 2014
  • Venue:  Changi Beach Park
  • Exact location:  Carpark A, near BBQ pit 6
  • Time:  1400 hours to 1800 hours.

SilverHairsClub Facebook – our link to the outside world

facebook

For some time, we have had a Facebook account.  Unfortunately, it just keeps accumulating members without too much effort and thought.  Facebook is open to the world and the public.  Not all are members.  Many are non-members are people out of somewhere.

I am looking at Facebook being open to the global audience, and any age can come into our Facebook and participate.

I would like to ask if there is anyone of you who has facebook experience, and who can revamp and administer the SilverHairsClub facebook.  It is important for the person to be able to handle negative and difficult situations.  While at the same time, has to speak up on behalf of the Club.  If you think you like this role, please let me know via email at terences@SilverHairsClub.com.

3rd Men’s Night, Tuesday, 2 July 2013

Please be informed that the 3rd Men’s Night will be held on Tuesday, 2 July 2013.  Details are as follows:

Venue:

313 @ Somerset

Food Republic on Orchard Road, Somerset MRT

Exact sitting location would be between Toast Box and Soup Guru

Time:

6.30 – 9 pm

men's night

Our aim is to have a regular place, where SHC men can pop in and get to know one another.  There will be no formalities. Generally, it is an event that we have thought of to generate more interest among the men, for them to talk their own things.  The Men’s Night will be held on a weekday.  We’ll develop this event as we go along.

In all likelihood, we’ll not plan for food or drinks.  The men will buy their own drinks and pay for the drinks as they are served.  This is to avoid complications of bill splitting.  Let’s make this a habit and procedure.

Arising from the last meeting on 4 June, we’ll discuss topics like:

– CPF

– Wealth Management

– Working in China

– Sex Food

– Women in SHC

The list of topics is by no means exhaustive.  Feel free to suggest more topics for discussion at the meeting on this blog.

Please note the date above and register your attendance on this blog.

Thank you.

SHC monthly gathering – Jun 2013

We did not have the May monthly gathering because we did not have a volunteer to EO this event.  Quite often, the monthly gathering is held at Hans Cafe, Upper Pickering on a weekday.  The EO gets to pick the date.

Anybody like to EO this June event?  If we do not have an EO, there may be no monthly gathering in June.  Please raise your hand if you wish to EO the June event.  If you have not EO’d a monthly gathering before, please volunteer your share for the Club.

How about an afternoon BBQ at the East Coast Park on a weekend? Sat 18 May 2013

During the earlier days of the SilverHairsClub, we had held a couple of BBQs at the East Coast Park.  On some occasions, the event coincide with the cycling activity.  On one occasion, it was a standalone late afternoon, and I remembered we almost had to beg the rain to stay up in the skies.

Perhaps, it is time to have another one.  Here’s the map.

bbqLet’s say:

We get the charcoal, the starters, the drinks, the water, the BBQ sauce, the plates, the fork and spoons, cups, ice, rubbish bags, the tissue paper from the shop, near Area C.  We have a reasonable charge.

We book two pits from the National Park.

We get to park at carpark C1.  There is an under pass to Marine Parade Promenade.

We get to swim, sun tan and laze around the greens.  Show off our swimming gear, play netball or badminton.  Or go cycling after the BBQ makan.

And, we have an afternoon BBQ, say 12nn to 1600 hrs.

And, everybody brings one pc of sausage, 200 grams of beef or a corb of jargon or one pc of chicken wings from their supermarket.

And, we clean up the place by 1600 hrs.  We can also not clean the place up, and pay someone to clean it up behind us.

Date confirmed –  Sat 18 May 2013 at BBQ pits C13 & C14.

SHC May monthly gathering cum Fleamart, tentative Sat 4 May 2013

The Mar monthly gathering, EO’d by Hew Lee was just over.  We have to plan for the next gathering.  I now like to switch quickly to the May gathering.

The monthly gatherings are planned with the intention of meeting the Club’s objective.  It’s meant for you to find new friends and catch up with old friends.  It’s may get a bit boring if we stick all the while to Hans Cafe; but it has the benefit of space, flexibility and no requirement to commit to a fixed number of pax.  Retirees start coming in from 4pm, while those working start strolling in after 6.30pm.  And, the gathering is usually held on a weekday.  We are now trying a Saturday morning.

Together with Jassmine Teo, who is in charge of the online Fleamart, I have thought of having the May monthly gathering to coincide with a small fleamart.  Am working out the details.

  1. Venue:  The Good Morning Nanyang Cafe, opp Royal Park hotel, 20 Upper Pickering Street.  Right at Exit A of Clarke Quay MRT station.
  2. Date:  Sat 4 May 2013; but not confirmed.  But, it will be a Saturday morning.
  3. Time:  0900 hrs to 1300 hrs.
  4. Fleamart stalls: limited to 4.  Strictly for members only.  Fleamart tables:  Not sure what and how we can cost it.  Although I think it will be $10  to $15 for a table space.
  5. About the place:  I had a coffee set, but it does have chicken curry with rice, and non-complicated food.  There is an aircon area about the size of a bedroom,  an outside dining area, about the size of a bus and and outer open space area for something which we have not thought of.  Maybe able to play badminton, if we can get approval from the Hong Lim community centre.
  6. After the gathering, you can go shopping.  Cylists, runners and walkists can also meet here.
  7. About the crowds:  No idea really, I think few companies open on a Sat; but the air is fresh, and the place has open wide space.
  8. How much do we charge?  No thoughts yet; although the owner has said he needs to prepare for the food and drinks.  Will let you know later.  It is likely to be less than $10 per pax, and $2 more for each family members and non-members.
  9. Car Park:  There is a nice open air car park space beside the venue.  I think about 15 cars can park there.  Didnt think of CBC charges, although I encourage all to take the MRT as you just need to walk up.

I am looking for an EO to raise his/her hand to run this event.  You can find your own co-EO if you are comfortable about doing so.  We need to finalise the details with the owner, confirm the date and time, inform our members in the Club, set a cost, approve the fleamart holders and start a registration list.  EOs usually make a lot of friends.

This monthly gathering and fleamart event is strictly for participation by SHC members only.  The fleamart may be patronised by some members of the public.  As this place is open to the public, non-members and/or members bringing their families and friends will be charged at $2 above member price.

I look forward to you being among the early ones to register for the event.  Also, fleamart stall holders can register here, stating what you intend to sell, subject to approval by the EO.
