Discussion: Affordable Retirement community in S’pore

I chanced upon an article about a retirement community called Nalcrest in Florida. It was built for the retirement of poorly-paid  postal workers in the 1960s. It got me reflecting: Can S’pore have an affordable retirement community for ordinary S’poreans (a.k.a. HDB flat dwellers)? I say yes because we have CPF ,  Medisafe and private savings to support a simple, dignified retirement life for the ordinary man in the street.

The idea is feasible if based on three main criteria: The retirement flats have a short lease,  are non- transferrable and open only to HDB flat dwellers.

If you are interested in this topic, do put in your take and/or share your suggestions/ideas. Perhaps we could send a proposal to the Minister for consideration. :)

New category – “Food and Makan area review”

A new category focusing on “Food and Makan area review” has just been created.   Other than travel and dancing, food is one of the most loved topics among Singaporeans.

If you have patronised a restaurant, cafe or food corner, you can give a food review.  As long as you have tried it recently, you can write a food review.  I have joined a couple of members, and I can see they just love good food.  One day, these members can write for food magazines, and even be a food critic.

Please start a new Post, if you wish to write a food review.

Nothing to do, so decide to go up to Mersing this Friday

A week ago, a friend of mine told me that this Friday is a holiday.  I wasn’t too sure if I will be in Singapore.  Well, I am back, and I suddenly want to take a slow car drive to Mersing.  So, we agreed to drive to Mersing using the attached route map.  We go Friday at about 6am and back Sunday late afternoon.

If there is anyone with your own car and group, wanting to drive up together, let’s meet just after the 2nd link.

No schedule, no prebooked hotels, eat simply and as local as possible, no speed driving.  Objective: eat, enjoy the scenery, and come back safely.

Let me know if you are coming.

An example of how to use the SHC LiveChat

Let’s say you like to organise a fishing trip to Tioman on 15 Jan 2013.

First, you can start a Post, indicating all the details of the trip.

Second, you like to invite interested participants to come together, ask questions and speak to the organiser.  Simple on the Post, say that you would like to have a livechat with interested participants, and invite them to go into the SHC LiveChat at a particular date and time.  Everybody logs in at the same time, and you take the lead.

https://silverhairsclub.com/?page_id=6076

This is an example only.  Note: SHC livechat is unmoderated.

Opportunity to be SHC 3rd Video Jockey

Music makes the world go round.  This is definitely true, judging from the music and songs that are played on this website and during our varied events.  I had played the role of the Video Jockey.  Our second VJ was Dolly Lim.  Now, I think it is a good time to have our third VJ.  This is an opportunity to express your music talents and interests.  If you are shy, this may be the role for you.

In this role, the VJ picks songs from the 60s and 70s, and play them on the top left hand corner of the Club’s website.  These music clips can also be from any era, and any language.  Sometimes, the video can be inline with current activities and members’ requests.

Pre-requisites would include:

1.  Familiar with songs from the 50s, 60 and 70s, in our common languages and dialects.

2.  You must believe that that “Music makes the world go round”.

3.  Familiar with the SHC culture, and loves helping fellow members get to know new and more friends.  Have been with the Club for at least two years.  Can interact with the Club membership.

4.  Able to spend 30 mins a week, to select videos and upload this video to our web server.

5.  This role is not difficult; although the person should be comfortable with the computer and internet.

6.  Can be of any sex and and age.

7.  Term: 1 year.  Candidates are required to ensure confidentiality on all membership database.  Those who cannot maintain strict confidence with email information need not apply.

If you like this role, please raise your hand or email to me.  Thank you.

Earth Hour 2013

Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007 as a campaign to raise awareness on environmental issues such as climate change and global warming. It begins as a movement to switch off lights to raise awareness on how we need to conserve resources. The movement quickly gained momentum and spread to other parts of the world.

This year, Earth Hour falls on Saturday, 23 March, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Join me next Saturday to switch off non-essential lights for one hour from 8.30 to 9.330pm if you are at home on this day in support of earth Hour.

Save the Planet, go beyond the hour. Remember , your action counts.

Cheers

SilverHairsClub – LiveChat, anytime, anyday

Hi fellow SHCians,

From members feedback over the years, some members have expressed that they do not always need to start a new Post, as they may not have a topic for discussion.  There has always been this request to just have a chat.  Others just want to have a simple online chat.  With our recent system upgrade, this is now possible.

Well, we can have it from today.

From today, you can have livechat anytime of the day.  Please respect the views and comments of fellow participants.   To participate:

  1. Simply log onto SilverHairsClub.com.
  2. A LiveChat window will appear on the bottom right of the HomePage. Click that little square box to start.
  3. You may be required to log in,  as this is strictly for members.
  4. In the LiveChat box, there is a faint empty text box, at the bottom.
  5. Chat whatever you like.  This LiveChat is not moderated.
  6. Please make effort to respond to fellow members who respond to your question. Do not leave the question dangling.
  7. As this is our general chatroom, do address the person first eg Hi James, ……
  8. SHC rules of no discussions on politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM.
  9. Contact tel numbers are not permitted.  No personal details.
  10. Most members are usually logged on before 9am, during lunch time, around 5pm and after dinner time.  When you leave the Chatroom, please say “goodbye”; so the other parties are not waiting for your response.
  11. EOs and EOs can pre-invite fellow members to come into the livechat at a certain date and type.  But, there maybe other members chat too.

Have fun.  Give LiveChat a try.  Any feedback appreciated.

SHC faces a sex imbalance problem; or rather has Singapore a serious problem

Hi members,

I am going to raise a topic which has always been one of our concerns; and this is the most common observations among members and Singaporeans alike.

Why is it that there are always more men women than women men at social events?  It’s not that the ratio of women to men is 60:40; but it’s more like 80:20.  We always thought that many men do not like dancing; and this may be partly right.

When it comes to other social events, we are also having the same observations.  Why are the men shying away?  Are they too busy?  But really, I think we have to understand the reasons.  And then, we need to know if we try to do so, we are banging our head against the wall.  If we cannot have an equal ratio, then we will continue to face the same problem, even if the membership is increased.

So, should we increase our membership? What do you think?

Participate in SPH event “Life Matters” on 27 & 28 July 2013 Suntec Hall 404

We receive an invitation to participate in an expo “Life matters”.  I thought of participating by taking a booth, with the objective of increasing our membership.  Often we advertised in the papers, but the costs are high.

This event is specially tailored for seniors in Singapore.

Where and When?
* Venue: Suntec Singapore, Hall 404
* Date: Sat & Sun, 27 & 28 July 2013
* Time: 10am – 8pm
* Feature dates: The Straits Times & Shin Min 26 July (Friday)/ Lianhe Zaobao 27 July (Saturday)

The SPH organiser has costings, starting from $4,588 for one booth.  It’s a standard size booth.

Is there any member/s who would like to share the booth?  We can share out; and it would be fun to have our members to also attend the Expo on a Saturday and Sunday.

SHC March monthly update

Dear fellow SilverHairsClub members,

The lunar New Year festival has just passed. It’s always full of memories.  To some of us, it’s a quiet time of the year.  The Snake year is a good year for you to introduce yourself to other members of the Club, if you have not done so.

SilverHairsClub is the place for you to find new friends, and find other members with similar hobbies and interests.

1.  SilverHairsClub.com: Has been upgraded to include new features eg adding pictures. You can attract members to your events by adding a picture to the Post.

2.  Introduce yourself:  If you have not introduced yourself, write to us.  We would help you to put your introduction in the Club. Include something about yourself, hobbies, interest, work or even family. Tell us your dreams, plans and future ideas. What u like and what you don’t like.   Tell us which schools you studied; you may find a lost class mate.  Even which company you are working for.  We like to know if you are retired or still working part-time or full time.  Even the not-so-good about yourself eg you love to drink yourself drunk, or you love the casino from morning till night.  Someone may like you.  Age not needed as everyone is over 45.

3.  Single Seniors:  The Club has many activities, organised by fellow members.  These activities will continue.  In addition, this year, we are focusing on single seniors.  Some of us may be single or “singles again”.  Members who are legally not married can join “Paper Clips”.  During the 1st 6 months, we will organise group singles activities, specially for “Paper Clips” only.  These activities will have a 50:50 male:female ratio.

*  To join “Paper Clips” as a participant, please email to paper.clips@SilverHairsclub.com.

*  If you like to join the Paper Clips committee, helping to organise singles events, do write to terences@SilverHairsClub.com.

Participate in SilverHairsClub activities. And you will find new friends, SilverHairs friends.  Travel together.  Have tea or potluck sessions together.  Play golf together.

I look forward to hear from you.

LET’s TREK WHERE FEW VENTURE!

The PipeLine Rambles are a series of 4 treks introduced in 2008.   PLR 2 and PLR 3 are my favorite treks.
We did PLR 2 on 2nd August 2008, time to revisit this trek again!       emoticon

This interesting mini trek with lush greenery all the way is not “our norm walk in the park”.
The terrain is undulating, as we trek up  & down slopes, the route is mostly off the beaten track.
The trail is exploratory and you can add some excitement if you so wish,
**  get onto & walk on a large pipe OR
**  slide down another  OR
**  test of strength…. challenge your HAND POWER,  heave oneself up a 4-feet wall (if it is still there).

Let me assure you that the challenges are not as daunting as it seems; there are OPTIONS ….  hehe

The walk shall end at the newly transformed lifestyle hub: The Grandstand where a variety of cuisine awaits!

IF you do not wish your legs to itch, come in long pants, longer socks & proper walking shoes!
Stay cool Be cool!             emoticon

Updated SilverHairsClub.com with new features wef 20 Feb 2013

New features have been incorporated in the new SilverHairsClub.com. ?However, it is not fully completed yet. ?We had commissioned a company to do our upgrades; and I am pleased with the change. ?You may test it; and if there are any issues, please feedback on this Post.

If a member asks a questions, please feel free to help out the person. ?For those who are familiar with WordPress, and if you have the time, please organise small get togethers to explain its workings. ?I wont respond to your feedback; although I will read all of them.

The major changes are:

  1. Better control over spams.
  2. Photographs can be added. ?Only one picture is allowed per post; more than that, the Post will be on hold or deleted. ?You may put in a picture that is relevant to the Post. ?If you put in a picture of a person or a group, it is your duty to ensure that approval has been given by that person or the group; failing which you will not be allowed to enter the Club.
  3. For portrait pictures, FULL face must be shown. ?Ideal for member introduction.
  4. The Club taboos continue to apply; no discussions on politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling or MLM.
  5. Any advertisements, not under the monthly fleamart Posts, need to be referred to admin@SilverHairsClub.com. ?T&C apply.
  6. Promotional logos, external organisations, company logos or pictures and pictures of non-members are not allowed.

There will be more changes; and they will be announced over the next few months.

We dont use all the features of WordPress. ?But here are some useful Youtube demos. ?You may try others demos.

Life partners for single Seniors

It’s been a long time since I last raised the issue of dating for Seniors.  Recently I had a chat with a few members, and the same topic arose.  I would like to revive the issue for discussion; give some serious considerations to the issue and perhaps plan for a dating event for Seniors.

Among club members, some of us are single; others are divorced; some are separated while others are going through the divorce process.  For some, the spouse has left the world.  There are reasons why some of us are single or single again.  Life can be lonely, as we walk the path thrugh our SilverHair years.  There is so much to live for; for our siblings, our friends, and for the freedom to see the world.  We have also SilverHairsClub members; many of whom have become close friends.

But, in our private life, we still want to have a close partner; someone whom we can chat from morning till night, hold hands as we stroll around the parks, hug one another when there is the feeling of sadness and pain.  To have a partner to live together as we walk towards the end of the rainbow.  For those who have a spouse or a partner, you will know what I mean.

For some of us, being single is a choice.  For some, having a life partner can make a difference to our everyday life.  No one can predict the outcome of having a partner; neither can we have a guarantee of a more meaningful life.

Many of our friends are singles or singles again.  And we know they would like to find someone who can share the rest of their lives together.  As we have read in the newspapers, the country places a lot of attention to young adults.  But, Seniors deserve attention too.  In this Post, I hope we can help our fellow members, friends and other Seniors who are singles to find someone who can be their life partner.  Let’s do something.

If you share the same concerns, I would like to ask you to join me in a discussion group, to discuss what we can do; and perhaps organise an event, specially for our single or singles again Seniors.  We keep the options and ideas open.  Feel free to discuss with ideas and thoughts.  Keep the warm water flowing, so as to encourage participation among singles and non-singles.

If you would like to join in the “planning committee”, please email terences@SilverHairsClub.com. We will likely have regular discussions over Whatsapp, followed by a meeting sometime end March.

This is a sensitive topic for some, so your encouragement would be great.

Last call for help – Dementia Project

Dear All, this is my last call for help with my project. I have so far received 3 responses (via personal email) from members who shared their experiences and completion of the questionnaire (not-so-professionally designedemoticon). If you have previous experience or is currently a care-giver, I’d really appreciate your help to complete the questionnaire. Please email me at inez@wsinnovate.net for me to send you a copy of the questionnaire. (We need about 10 responses from each group member to make up the sample size of 50).Thanking you in advance..inez

Badminton on Thursdays at Bukit Gombak

Hi All, the badminton group has been quite regular – since April/May 2012. It is steadily growing with the regulars and not-so-regulars, from East to West (and all over Singapore), congregating at Bukit Gombak Stadium on Thursdays from 10.00am to 12.00 noon. We have increased to 2 courts, that means a total of 4 hours of play.        For the coming weeks, we will have coaching sessions for the weaker players. This is to improve the standards of play – but it is OPTIONAL. We welcome players of ALL skills/standards. Our routine is to play, chit-chat, laugh, play, CHEER/JEER – then shower (bring your own hot water and soap)- then lunch (at your own expense) across the road. Sometimes, we have more elaborate ones (thanks to the drivers amongst us.) Come join us, get to know us – players /non-players – or just have coffee/lunch. Latest Attraction – meet our handsome COACHES emoticon who will teach you new badminton tricks…
