The equities markets have come alive. Come and share what and how other members are reacting to global market changes?”

We are organising a gathering on Sat 1st April 2017 (April Fool’s day) from 2pm to 5.30pm at GreenDots cafe, right at STAR Vista, Bourna Vista MRT.

The equities markets have indeed come alive, from America, to Europe and Asia. It may be a reaction from the Trump effect, a possible trade war between the US and China, a lower un-employment in the States, and confidence that the world will swing either left or right. Now that TPP is off, interest rates are expected to climb and American companies will be going home.

Online Equities trading is a popular activity among seniors. With changes going around the world fast, we can hear what others are doing.

Music makes the world round. Where were you then?

A song brings back great memories.  When we hear a song, it reminds us of where we were, what age we were snd when we heard the song.  Songs bring happiness, sadness, love, romance and memories.

Songs bring back our childhood days, as fresh as yesterday. We remember our school fun fairs, the days when we gather with fellow friends at campsites and around the campfire.  Songs makes us feel romantic when we met our first love.  Sometimes songs remind us of how crazy we have been and how far we go to get what we want. We laughed privately at ourselves.

Here’s an old song?  Share with us how you feel?

“If you love me, let me know”,  a Olivia Newton John hit, 1974.

This is an EC activity; feel free to bring your adult friends who are over 45!

Date: Saturday, 11 March 2017

The festive seasons have ended… good time to stretch and walk off the flabs :D

Due to the recent incident of big trees being uprooted, our walk routes are limited.
In view of the safety for all participants during this rainy season, we have changed this walking route to a pleasant yet interesting trail!

For greenery, we will pass through 2 small parks; will see the only Buddhist temple outside Myanmar built in the traditional Burmese architectural style; a chic cafe; a villa built in late 1800s was restored and open to the public in 2001; Singapore’s first civil airport terminal built in 1937 but ceased operation in 1955 and used by various groups; other interesting landmarks like the longest HDB block.

There’s two end points, it depends on time, weather and participants’ energy level:
1) Kallang MRT or
2) Sports Hub

Bring water bottles, caps, umbrellas and cameras. Do wear comfortable walking shoes.

Look forward to your early registration! :D :D

30% increase in Singapore water rates

Last night, I was sitting at Perth airport, waiting for the flight to Singapore. A young man, who has been away for about 30 years, asked if I was a Singaporean. I replied “Sure, Yes”, and of course, I asked him “Why”.

He asked me if I kept track of news in Singapore, and if knew Singapore has announced a 30% increase in water rates. I didn’t believe him, but later, I sat down to read the E-News on my wonderful Blackberry. Wah, I was shocked to read countless comments on a 30% water rate increase.

My first thought was “what business in the world can increase its price by 30%? Water? Cannot be. Water is Life. Water is not alcohol and not cigarettes.  It is not sugar. How can a household paying $50 a month now pays $15 more?

What has gone wrong in Singapore? We already have GST which is pro-rated to consumption. This controls consumption.

This 30% issue is a current issue. It affects every household and business. I hope we can send a message to the government and the PUB, through our many grassroots members, that this is a serious matter. Feel free to offer your views and comments. Alternate suggestions also welcome.

No name calling plse, and keep this issue a non-political discussion.

If you have concern about the difficulty level, it requires at most 1 hour round trip of walking, except at Kings Canyon you have an option to take either a Rim Walk (3.5 hour return) or Creek Walk ( 1 hour return). I have tried to pick trails that is within our limits. If you are not taking the Kings Canyon Rim Walk, only Day 1 has slightly more walking. The amount of walking for all other days are no different from a normal sight-seeing tour.

If you are interested, please write to shctour@outlook.com. The early birds will get the worms, those register later might have to pay a higher rate for the air ticket. If you are interested, but need more time to consider, do let me know.

Google Cloud and its Application

Learn Google Cloud storing & sharing of photos and documents together with other useful Google Apps

Google has an equivalent sets of Apps (Google Document, Google Sheets & Google Slides) that work quite similar to Microsoft Office (Words, Excel & PowerPoint) and is free for personal use. Google and Microsoft files are not compatible, however you can convert Google files, for viewing only, in the Micorsoft format.

You may have a set of photos taken on your smartphone you wish to share with your friend but the attachment files is so large and is not possible to be sent by standard email account. Using Google cloud is one of the solutions that can achieve what you wanted to do. There is a (IT) Talk in the library with the following details:

Date: 11th March (Saturday)
Time: 3PM to 5PM
Venue: Bukit Merah Library
Admission if free but registration is required

Directions: Nearest MRT: Tiong Bahru Station, exit and turn right, up escalator and take bus number 5 or 16 or 851 to end (Bukit Merah Bus Interchange). About 5 minutes walk to library. Ask for direction, if necessary

An Eco thai community project combining cow breeding, rearing chickens to fruits and vegetables farming in North East Thailand

Last year, in one of the poorest and remote provinces, in Nan province, close to the Laos border, initiated an eco project to train the local thai communities on cow breeding, chicken rearing to fruit and vegetables planting.  The project started on bare land. The projects aims to bring the local thais together.  Mr Seri, in his mid 50s whose background is in agriculture, speaks excellent English, hopes to bring this meaningful project together and bettering the lives of the less fortunate people in Thailand

To have an idea of where NAN province is, Map, click here.

The projects starts from bare land.  There was nothing when he started last year. Today, he has managed to pump water from underground, build the sheds for dried hay to feed the cows, divide the land for vegetables, plants, chickens and cows.  And, you may not believe it, he has convinced the local authorities to provide the area with broadband internet.

There is so much work to be done to make this eco project succeed.  The project is still developing.  I visited the project last year, and have since been keeping track of its progress. For me, I have always wanted to help in meaningful projects in Thailand.  I like to invite you to learn and see how this project will develop in the years to come.

And, for members with a background in fruit trees, vegetables, chickens, cows and agriculture land, I look forward to your ideas and suggestions.  I shall also update you from time to time with pictures of the progress.  II am also ready to invite Seri and his wife to join as part of SilverHairsClub, Thailand.

A trip to Mumbai and Delhi Wed 1 Mar to Wed 8 Mar 2017

I am making a trip to India, Delhi and Mumbai during 1st half 1 to 8 Mar 2017. If you have not been to India, feel free to join me. The Taj Mahal, a wonder of intense love is a few hours from Delhi via car. Delhi is a modern city, with modern day traffic jams, huge monuments, underground shopping malls, and exotic India curries. This will be the 10 times, I will be going to the Taj Mahal, and we will stay over to marvel the Taj under the full moon.

Mumbai is the world’s Bollywood. Entertainment, discos, tall scrapers, beautiful sea views, and a population of more than 20 million people.

In India, you see a huge income divide. We can see large weddings, starting at 10pm and ending in the early hours of the morning. You will get to see slumps, thousands and thousands of poor people.

India will be the world’s next biggest production centre.

If you like to join this trip, it is likely we flying Sin/Mumbai/delhi/Sin. We can also do Sin/KL/Mumbai/Delhi/Sin. About 6 days.

Interested, just indicate your interest here.
Feel free to ask any Q.

An unusual experience taking trains in Singapore

I think this is a good intro to Terence Seah. And, I encourage all of you to share more about yourself. I shall start. The story is embarassing.

Two days ago, I went to Bukit Batok station to meet a friend. From Hougang, I took the NE line to Outram Park and then connect EW line to Jurong East and then take the NS line to Bukit Batok station. It was easy.

After my meeting, I went back to Bukit Batok station to go home. I got into the train and sat down. 10 mins later, I realised that I just past Kranji station. Aiyah, I decided to carry on the journey passing Yishun and AMK. I was bored and fell asleep.

When I worked up, I realised my train had stopped and there was no one else inside. I got out and found that I was at Marina South Pier. The station look like a beautiful modern “ghost town” station. I waited and waited and finally a train arrived.

I took this NS line, connect at Dhoby Ghaut and then via the NE line to Hougang.

This is where I start to think about myself, train stations, and what it feels to have crossed 60. My purple card hit an error at the gates, so I went to info counter. The officer looked at me and asked me where I came from, and I reply “Bukit Batok”. He also asked me what I was doing inside the trains all the while. I thought this was a “trick” or “trying to be funny” question, but I calmly replied “waiting for trains at Marina South Pier”.

Then, the officer smiled and said “No problem, I shall reset your card”. As he led me to the gate, he asked me, “Sir, have you taken train before?

I was confused there and then. Did I really spent 2 hours inside the train network? Still unsure.

The Rooster is coming; let’s come up with suggestions on how to celebrate the occasion

Traditionally, most of us would have now started to springclean our house.  Then, we start to think what we shall do for the family reunion dinner.  The next day, we would visit our parents, and we fight to figure out which relatives we like to visit.  We wait for invitations to visit colleaques and friends.  And, we anxiously wait for our children to come over with their children.  Not forgetting we enjoy exchanging oranges and give angpows.  We enjoy the goodies, the bak kwa and Green Spot drink.

As the year passed, some of our children feel it is better to spend this holiday to escape the tradition and chore of visiting relatives.  The cruise ships are full with bookings throughout this season, and family members explore going down under to Australia, a short trip to Bintam or regional Asean.  For many of us, Chinese New Year may now be different from what it was before when we were 16, 30 and 45.

At around this time, we think what event we can hold.  Usually, we land up with a sit-down round table lunch or dinner.  If the event meets our club’s objective, we can go for it.  I guess there are limitations at this time, and costs are likely to be high, and most people would have their plans.  But, we can still celebrate this Rooster year together.

Think of a gambling table, some satay or prata or even chicken curry.  Think a little further than Singapore. Maybe a country club function room. Maybe someone’s house or apartment.  How about dancing on a Sat afternoon?

If you have something in mind, share with us. Suggest a date, a place and cost.

Closing date for suggestions: Mon 23 Jan 2017.

Retiring in Singapore

I used to wonder about retiring in a foreign country. The idea was exciting when I was working and in my prime. However, now that I am semi retired, I feel that Sge is the best place to retire for Sge citizens.

CPF is making sure we have an adequate nest egg when we retire. For needy pioneers  the govt provides subsidies for this and that. And medical treatment – no one will be denied medical treatment for lack of money. This govt pledge is really heart-warming.

Our HDB flat is an asset that can be used to earn income should we need cash. Most of us have this asset. At present many elderly including retirees are financially independent and have strong purchasing power. As the country progresses with an aging population in mind, retirees can look forward to  a good future – a vibrant retirement life.

Terence is retiring in Thailand and Abel is retiring in Indonesia. The ‘push ‘ factor for both men is strong – both have families in the foreign countries.  For me and my circle of friends, the pasture is greener at home!

 – A personal opinion.

Retiring in Indonesia

Merry Christmas and a fair 2017 to all Silverhairs

As am conversant with Bahasa Indonesia having worked a short stint and On,Off a continual visitor since

19Seventy Eight plus having an Indon family now for nearly two years residing in Palembang after moving from Bandar Lampung(southernmost Sumatra), I am retiring abroad in 2019/20. But am seriously considering other subaurban locality as being aware of assertive awakening of Race & Religion beginning to increasingly appear in urban areas.

Like all Sporean spouses maintaining Asean wives, we are very fortunate that due to the continually strengthening of the Spore Dollar against other Asean currencies since 1999/2000, we do not need more than One Thousand Spore dollars for monthly upkeeping. Yours truly alternate monthly remittance of Six,Seven million Rupiah beginning this year from initial year Two Thousand of One million, one and a half million Rupiah, comparably with exchange in October’2000 @$213.00 per One million Rupiah to two weeks ago @$108.70 per One million Rupiah. In mid-November last year, the Rupiah dropped to its lowest @$102.60 per One million rupiah.

Regards

Abel Tan

Retiring in Thailand

I have worked and lived in Thailand since 1999.  My wife is Thai and my son is Thailand.  Although I am a Singapore citizen, I enjoy the Thai culture, traditions, food and environment.  Thailand is a beautiful country, and I love travelling to many provinces and its cities and remote towns.
I am now 61 and am thinking of spending most of my balance days in Thailand.  When I started SilverHairsClub, the reasons then were to find like minded friends to live in Thailand too.  Now, 10 years later, I have the same dream.
There are many reasons to spend our retirement days in Singapore. But, more retirees are looking at spending time in nearby countries.  I can only focus on Thailand because this is where I had spent my last 20 years.
Thailand is a great place to spend our retirement days. You are invited to participate in discussions, and hopefully you can make your decision to stay in Thailand, just like I would in a few years time.

Feel free to join the discussion on Facebook or on this forum.

Now is the best time to enjoy cool Thai season and culture

Most of Northern and Central Thailand are seeing dry and cool, even cold seasons.  It’s the time of the year when Thais enjoy seeping beer among the rice fields while eating spicy basil minced pork with sticky rice and tomyam kampong chicken.

It’s time to make a journey to Chiangmai, Nongkhai and the border province between Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.  This is also the last rice harvesting crop of the year.  Almost everywhere, farmers cut Hom Mali rice, drying them before storing them for slow use throughout the year.  Rice is in abundance this year.

If you are planning to come to Thailand before 7 Jan 2017, give me a buzz.  We can have a few beers together.

We plan to purchase our own air tickets and engage an overseas tour operator to conduct the tour. It will be a private group.

We plan to travel together on China Eastern Airlines. The best time to visit Luoping for the Canola Flowers is from 20 Feb to early March. It will be a peak period. My main concern is in securing the air tickets for our preferred days and times.

If you have concern about the difficulty level, I have checked with the tour operator. She said most of the places you can proceed according to your physical fitness. For the Nine Dragons Waterfalls, you can reach the first waterfall in less than 2 km on flat ground and it is up to you whether to proceed to the 2nd and 3rd tier.

If you are interested, please write to shctour@outlook.com preferably by Fri 25 Nov. The early birds will get the worms, those register later might have to pay a higher rate for the air ticket. If you are interested, but need more time to consider, do let me know.

If the itinerary is too small for reading, press the Ctrl key and the + sign key simultaneously to enlarge. Press the Ctrl key and the – sign key simultaneously to reduce.
