SHC faces a sex imbalance problem; or rather has Singapore a serious problem

Hi members,

I am going to raise a topic which has always been one of our concerns; and this is the most common observations among members and Singaporeans alike.

Why is it that there are always more men women than women men at social events?  It’s not that the ratio of women to men is 60:40; but it’s more like 80:20.  We always thought that many men do not like dancing; and this may be partly right.

When it comes to other social events, we are also having the same observations.  Why are the men shying away?  Are they too busy?  But really, I think we have to understand the reasons.  And then, we need to know if we try to do so, we are banging our head against the wall.  If we cannot have an equal ratio, then we will continue to face the same problem, even if the membership is increased.

So, should we increase our membership? What do you think?

The PipeLine Rambles are a series of 4 treks introduced in 2008.   PLR 2 and PLR 3 are my favorite treks.
We did PLR 2 on 2nd August 2008, time to revisit this trek again!       emoticon

This interesting mini trek with lush greenery all the way is not “our norm walk in the park”.
The terrain is undulating, as we trek up  & down slopes, the route is mostly off the beaten track.
The trail is exploratory and you can add some excitement if you so wish,
**  get onto & walk on a large pipe OR
**  slide down another  OR
**  test of strength…. challenge your HAND POWER,  heave oneself up a 4-feet wall (if it is still there).

Let me assure you that the challenges are not as daunting as it seems; there are OPTIONS ….  hehe

The walk shall end at the newly transformed lifestyle hub: The Grandstand where a variety of cuisine awaits!

IF you do not wish your legs to itch, come in long pants, longer socks & proper walking shoes!
Stay cool Be cool!             emoticon

Life partners for single Seniors

It’s been a long time since I last raised the issue of dating for Seniors.  Recently I had a chat with a few members, and the same topic arose.  I would like to revive the issue for discussion; give some serious considerations to the issue and perhaps plan for a dating event for Seniors.

Among club members, some of us are single; others are divorced; some are separated while others are going through the divorce process.  For some, the spouse has left the world.  There are reasons why some of us are single or single again.  Life can be lonely, as we walk the path thrugh our SilverHair years.  There is so much to live for; for our siblings, our friends, and for the freedom to see the world.  We have also SilverHairsClub members; many of whom have become close friends.

But, in our private life, we still want to have a close partner; someone whom we can chat from morning till night, hold hands as we stroll around the parks, hug one another when there is the feeling of sadness and pain.  To have a partner to live together as we walk towards the end of the rainbow.  For those who have a spouse or a partner, you will know what I mean.

For some of us, being single is a choice.  For some, having a life partner can make a difference to our everyday life.  No one can predict the outcome of having a partner; neither can we have a guarantee of a more meaningful life.

Many of our friends are singles or singles again.  And we know they would like to find someone who can share the rest of their lives together.  As we have read in the newspapers, the country places a lot of attention to young adults.  But, Seniors deserve attention too.  In this Post, I hope we can help our fellow members, friends and other Seniors who are singles to find someone who can be their life partner.  Let’s do something.

If you share the same concerns, I would like to ask you to join me in a discussion group, to discuss what we can do; and perhaps organise an event, specially for our single or singles again Seniors.  We keep the options and ideas open.  Feel free to discuss with ideas and thoughts.  Keep the warm water flowing, so as to encourage participation among singles and non-singles.

If you would like to join in the “planning committee”, please email terences@SilverHairsClub.com. We will likely have regular discussions over Whatsapp, followed by a meeting sometime end March.

This is a sensitive topic for some, so your encouragement would be great.

Badminton on Thursdays at Bukit Gombak

Hi All, the badminton group has been quite regular – since April/May 2012. It is steadily growing with the regulars and not-so-regulars, from East to West (and all over Singapore), congregating at Bukit Gombak Stadium on Thursdays from 10.00am to 12.00 noon. We have increased to 2 courts, that means a total of 4 hours of play.        For the coming weeks, we will have coaching sessions for the weaker players. This is to improve the standards of play – but it is OPTIONAL. We welcome players of ALL skills/standards. Our routine is to play, chit-chat, laugh, play, CHEER/JEER – then shower (bring your own hot water and soap)- then lunch (at your own expense) across the road. Sometimes, we have more elaborate ones (thanks to the drivers amongst us.) Come join us, get to know us – players /non-players – or just have coffee/lunch. Latest Attraction – meet our handsome COACHES emoticon who will teach you new badminton tricks…

Supporting role players in SilverHairsClub

The SilverHairsClub is a social club, mainly for Singaporeans, and targetting those who are 45 years and above.  The Club’s key objective is to provide a platform for members to meet new and more friends.

SHC, in short for SilverHairsClub, revolves around a virtual club named SilverHairsClub.com.  This is accessible by all members as well as members of the public.   Members can enter the Club, as long as they have an userid and a password.

The Club has been very successful and active, and this is attributed to the many SHC members who help to bring other members together, by organising physical and real-life activities.  Members who organise activities strictly for members are called Event Organisers EOs”; while members who organise activities for members as well as non-members, are called Event Coordinators ECs.  All these roles are voluntary.  In return, we encourage members to do their part by organising activities for other members too.

Every club has its rules; and SHC, being a social club, does not permit discussions on politics, race, religion, sex, direct selling and MLM on its forum and activities.  We have been more relaxed on advertising, and we can now accept paid advertising.  Cooperations with external organisations or groups can be made via its Corporate membership.

I have tried to handover the running of SHC to interested members, by mid 2013; but unfortunately, there has been no response or interest.  While I would still keep this option as open, I think I would not delay a change further.  Most of the feedback centred around having a committee.  I have thought about it and shall give it a go. However, EOs and ECs are still free to continue to organise activities as they seem fit.

Currently, we have the following members providing supporting roles in SHC.  They are:

  1. Loh Yew Kwong – supporting members who have difficulties with Posting and comments.
  2. Lily Ho – supporting members who have difficulties with Posting and comments.
  3. Dolly Lim – supporting members who have difficulties with Posting and comments.
  4. Lee King Seng – role of picture manager, uploading photos onto our website.
  5. Jassmine Teo – runs SHC online Fleamart, every month as a free personal advertising service to members.
  6. Membership role – role of increasing Club’s membership
  7. Media relations – Daniel Chan, liaising with media companies, interviews and spokesman
  8. Public relations role – Coordinating with external organisations
  9. Sports – supporting and encouraging more sports activities.
  10. Charity – encouraging and supporting more charity events.
  11. Small business – previously called the Round Table.
  12. Advertising – looking at means of generating advertising revenue.
  13. Jobs – encouraging and supporting job opportunities for SilverHairs.
  14. Others.

Generally, I am looking for members who are keen to serve on the committee.  The roles are mainly to encourage and support different activities and topics., and not to organise activities as a key role.  Some of the roles I am looking for are in membership, Public relations, Sports, Charity, small business, Jobs and Advertising.  There are more; and we can definitely look at more roles, with the aim of supporting members needs.

I look forward to your ideas and thoughts.

Wishing all SilverHairsClub members a healthy, wealthy and prosperous Lunar New Year

Very soon, we will be celebrating Lunar New Year.  And, I like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a healthy Snake year.  I believe a number of us are sentimental as we remember the many traditions we used adopt during this Spring festival.

So, enjoy all the eating, drinking, gambling and meeting up with friends and relatives.  Let’s take this occasion to give our best wishes to our fellow friends.  Include some YouTube songs, stories and reflections

who am I ??

Dear Members

By now most of you might have received and read email from Terence ref "February News Update".
I just want to make a quick clarification here i.e. the original article was without name hence I asked you to guess ‘who am I’ but then the "Admin" added my name in it, hence there’s no need to guess anymore isn’t it?

But since I mentioned about BIGGER prize and several members have responded with my photo, I therefore would like to say "ok, the prize will still be given to those who have my photo" (but no prize for guessing who am I hee hee).

you may  download the pic here or send it to frispjt@yahoo.com.
Closing date: 8 Feb 2013 midnight
Prize will be given on 17 Feb at the Lohei gathering (so make sure you are there!)

For those who wrote to me via "admin", I will respond to you before CNY ok? (frankly I’m quite glad  many ‘non active’ members responding to the email. it’s worth the effort and time I put in)

6.9 million population in 2030 – Share your thoughts

For many of us, we will be at least 65 years old in 20 years time.  Last week, the Singapore government released the Population White Paper with the headline "6.9 million population in 2030".For many of us, we will be at least 65 years old in 20 years time.

Of course, some of us might not need to be too worried, as we may not be around.  This projection has generated a lot of interest in Singapore, and among Singaporeans.  Name it and we can read them in the papers concerns of high cost housing, medical care, less space and job competition.  There are numerous concerns.

I thought we can have a hearty chat on this topic, which is close to the hearts of many of us.  As the elderly population increases, does Singapore need to raise the projected population to 6.9 m people in 20 years time? The paper projects growth rates of 2 – 3% with this population increase.  This number seem rather modest, as any global financial crisis can easily wipe this number off.

What can we do, being a part of Singapore elderly?  Take a broad view on the topic.  What would you do? Maybe take a less serious view or even a fun view;  your thoughts and ideas may be worth considering.  Some ideas and suggestions may be useful to the economists and the government.

Keep the politics element out of this Post please.

Project on caregivers of dementia patients

Hi All, I am currently pursuing the Specialist Diploma in Health Promotion at Nanyang Polytechnic. My group is undertaking a project to find out the needs of caregivers of dementia patients. The internet and brochures from the hospital/day centres etc are some areas where caregivers have access for information. But it is mostly "too technical" or "too general".. As such, my team mates and I are interviewing caregivers to find out the "gaps" and attempt to consolidate a "survival kit" for caregivers, both professionals (such as doctors/nurses) and non-professionals (such as spouse/children/relatives/etc). If you are a caregiver, (now or have taken care of one previously)  and willing to share your experiences, please email me at inez@wsinnovate.net. I will furnish you with more details about the project.                                                                                    Thanks A Lot.. inez

Cabaret night 2013 (Taipei) – refurbished and new renovated, a sequel to Shanghai night

Cabaret Night can come alive again this year.

I wonder whether those who attended the last “Shanghai Cabaret Night 2010” still remember the event of glamour and nostalgia. Well, perhaps we can revive the occasion.

The owners of the last SHC Cabaret Jeffrey and Geraldine have just sold off their stakes to a rich tycoon couple.  Together, the couple run a few nightclubs in Shanghai. Hongkong, Singapore and Taipei.  The guests are mainly the rich and well-to-do and those who love drinks and songs.  Each night, limousines and rolls royce would stop at its main entrance.  A MRT train runs by the Cabaret.  Elegantly dressed ladies and huge pouch men, accompanied by body guards would turned up nightly at its doors.

There is fun and lots of money roll around each night. The stage is well set, with Chinese decor and dimmed lights.  Beautiful singers come on stage each night and they would sing songs to bring out memories of love, the past and nostalgia. There are also free lance ladies and guy dancers who can dance with the guests, for USD 5 per song.

Cabaret Night 2013 is a sequel to Shanghai Night 2010.  This is an evening of drinks, dancing, chit chat and business deals.  It’s also an evening to entertain your clients, whether you are a rich business tycoon or a lady boss running a chain of restaurants.

Of course, there is room for those who want a night out for drinks only, so as to forget the world of saddness, revenge and love loss.  Guests can end the evening with more drinks and Taiwanese porridge at the night market.

Guys and gals, this Cabaret night is a theme event.  The city is Taipei. Most Taipei people speak Mandarin, Min Nan (Hokkien) and some English.   This event is strictly and exclusive to SilverHairsClub members. The cabaret serves drinks, no food.  Tips of one USD is common to all service staff.  Mainly there will be songs, drinks, dancing and anything the worldly earth brings us.  Strictly no line dancing. Songs are mainly Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese and a few English.  The era is 1970s.  Bouncers will be at the door, so good behaviour, proper dressing.

Please note this event is themed around a nightclub cabaret, and not intended to support perceived negative morals.  The idea is to bring back the good old days, listen to old songs, good fun and enjoy the company of fellow SilverHairsClub members.

No details of the event yet.  Let’s plan together, perhaps over the next two months, and make it an event to relive past memories of the 70s.  Nothing has been set yet.  There is a likelihood this event will be held in June or July 2013, at the previous place where Shanghai Night 2010 was held.

Shanghai Night 2010 was held without conducting a single meeting, except for a couple of live singing trials. I look forward to Cabaret Night 2013 being conducted without a single meeting too. The exact date of the event will be announced, once the place and date are confirmed. All discussions will be held at the Club SilverHairsClub.com.  You are invited to participate.

Chinese New Year lunch dim-sum in Feb 2013

Hi everybody,

It’s probably a good time of the year to start thinking about our CNY lunch/dim-sum.  In previous years, we hold the event at the Red restaurant or the old Lucky restaurant at Toa Payoh Central.  Let’s give the event some tonight.

Personally, I always prefer the event to be a dim-sum or maybe a buffet.  But, more importantly I like the event to stay low-cost, somewhere in the region of <$20.  It can be held in a restaurant or a Club house.  Some difficulties we faced in previous years are unless we have a firm booking, we cannot get a place.  I remembered once we had to go to the Toa Payoh restaurant at 7.30am, queue and leave the place by 10am.

Maybe the difficulty is to find a $20 place.  We do not need the peak hous of 12-2pm; anytime after or before this time is fine.

If someone has a club house or a big house, and able to host a lunch, around this price, for 40-50 people, this would be fine and fun.  We can also have mahjong, maybe with prata or non-Chinese food.  We keep our options open.

Date or day-wise, we can go for the first suggestion.  Same with time.

Ideas or suggestions welcome.

Travel complaints among members

One of the activities which seniors love to engage in is to see the world while their legs are still strong.  Many of us plan to go on trips which travel agents do not normally bring travellers to.  Sometimes,  we do not have kakis to travel with.

Quite often, some members do ask if there are like-minded SHCians who would like to travel together.  At the same time, some members, because of their knowledge of some places, invite fellow members to join them to travel to selected cities or remote parts of the world.

From what we read in the forum, most self group travel among members turn out well; and members enjoyed the friendship and the trip proper.  Members also tend to trust and accept travel arrangements organised by fellow members.

But some trips can turn into disaster trips; and the consequences can be unhappy. Expectations can be totally mismatched.  Our expectations of costs can vary eg what is the perceived cost of hotel or guesthouses.  Food can be another area where value and price mismatch.  Service is another area.  Sometimes, we may feel it is better to take an organised tour vs a self-planned tour.  Gosh, things can go wrong.

Some trips among members do turn out into disaster trips.  Friendship goes down the drain.  Many travellers keep quiet, rather than speak out on what they see as bad organisation or they just stress themselves quietly among themselves.  Some feel strongly other members should be informed.

Some feel I should highlight these members or even ban such members from the club.  Should we discuss this openly on this forum?  Should the organiser who led the trips be given a chance to speak out?  Very often, when things go wrong, there is a feeling the organiser made some money.

Yes, we all know things do and can go wrong.  When a service is offered, the follow-up communication is usually between seller and buyer, organiser and fellow travellers.  The unhappiness lives on.

As a club, we do not have the resources to track all travel arrangements.  We do not track any sale of products and services between or among fellow members.  Who would put up travel guidelines? Who would check and enforce these guidelines? Would there be club volunteers to track any complaints?

I am writing this email because there are such complaints.

I like to hear your views.  Stay objective please.
