Our heart, our home, our Singapore – Happy National Day

Dear fellow SilverHairsClub members,

All of us have seen many National Days. We participate in parades, we contribute to our nation and build Singapore to what it is today. We watch NDP celebrations on TV, at the Padang and National Stadium. We are all proud of Singapore.

On behalf of SHC, on this grand occasion, let’s wish our ourselves and our country, “Happy National Day”.

Retirement evaluation trip to Thailand coastal regions from Sathahip to Chonburi via Rayong, Jomthien, Pattaya, Bangsaen, Angsila 9 – 14 Nov 2019

Now that we have visited Khao Yai, our next retirement evaluation trip will be to Thailand’s coastal regions, following closely around the gulf of Thailand.

From Suvarnabhumi airport, straight to Chonburi Bangsaen beach, and hugging the coastline to Pattaya, Jomthien, Rayong and Sattahip. We will not enter Bangkok city. Our last stop will be Sattahip, and we will return to Suvarnabhumi airport. Note: I may reverse the direction, so we can end the last day buying seafood and kiam Her.

We can expect seafood for most part of the trip, water, fresh air, no rain as dry season has arrived, fishing villages, seafood markets, beaches, a vibrant night life at Pattaya, relaxing Rayong, turtles, counting ships, swimming and local communities. Expect a rustic slow moving trip to high energy activity at Pattaya. Most important, great company among members.

Punggol Coastal Walk

Monthly walk: Punggol Coastal Walk

Time : 4.30pm SHARP
Duration: approx. 2.5hours. Distance 5 km
Meeting Place: Punggol Mrt exit A
ECs: Christina Chan with Anna Seet and Charles Wee

This is a very popular route for an easy evening walk suggested by our walkist Anna Seet. The walk takes us along a scenic coastal part of Punggol and a manicured waterway. For those of you who have not been there, it’s an interesting and memorable experience. For others it is always refreshing to see an updated progressive Punggol, and we continue to marvel at how fast the place has evolved and changed.
We commence our walk from Punggol Mrt , walk through Waterway Point towards the made Canal waterway that links two rivers, Ponggol River and Serangoon River. From the Canal we proceed westwards to the Punggol River, strolling along its riverside until we reach Punggol Marina Boatel . Continuing, we trace the northern coastal stretch , walking along a park connector until Coney Island. Nearby there we branch off and walk along another canal heading towards Oasis LRT where we end our walk. Refreshment and/or dinner at a nearby coffee shop awaits you.

Wear comfortable footwear, no slippers/sandals.
Protect oneself with sun screen, sunglasses, caps. And bring along an Umbrella
.
The Walk Team: ChristinA Chan, Veronica Wong, Mary Tan, Linda Chua ,Azhari Cuttilan and Charles Wee.

Monthly Walk : A Rustic Park Experience

Date: Saturday, 8 June 2019

Time: 4.15pm sharp

Meeting Place : Use Exit C from Punggol Mrt Station to Punggol Bus Interchange (Berth 5 Bus Service 84)

Duration: approx 2.5hrs

ECs: Veronica Wong & Mary Tan

Discover the rustic charms of Coney Island or Pulau Serangoon, home to a wide variety of habitats, including coastal forests, grasslands, mangroves, and casuarina woodlands. In keeping with the ideal of environmental sustainability, the signs, seats and even the boardwalk on the island are made from Casuarina timber from uprooted trees. Coney Island Park still feels like a world away from urbanity.

We will walk along the Promenades paved areas to enjoy the views of passing ships and Johor’s shoreline. Take photo at the famous Coney Island gate. Stroll along the earth paths, exploring the forest and mangrove habitats. Opportunities to observe and try spotting wildlife or listen to the chirping of birds. If you encounter any animals, keep a safe distance from them, do avoid approaching them. Do not feed the monkeys, or hold any plastic bag and water bottle when visiting the park. We move on to the beach areas which provide a nice seaside break after sweating out on walking.

Walk will end back at the Western Entrance. For those who wish to have dinner, there are eateries at the nearby Punggol Settlement.

Tips to prepare for a safe and enjoyable walk ………………..
Dress comfortably, advisable to wear long pants and covered walking shoes; bring drinking water to stay hydrated; wear a hat, put on sunglasses and apply sunscreen to shield yourself from the sun; apply insect repellent if you are prone to insect bites; bring umbrella or raincoat.

Walk Team: ChristinA Chan, Charles Wee, Veronica Wong, Mary Tan, Azhari Cuttilan and Linda Chua

Retirement evaluation trip to Khao Yai 18-21 Jul 2019

Khao Yai, known globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about 2 hours north east of Bangkok.

I am organising a trip to Khao Yai in July 2019. For this trip, I have asked Bernard, a Singaporean, who has retired and settled down in the Khao Yai area with his Thai wife Nicky. The couple owns a fresh corn-on-the-cob business. They enjoy farming, tissue culture and agriculture related activities. Bernard enjoys his retirement at Khao Yai. This is an opportunity to hear from a fellow Singaporean.

Khao Yai is known for it’s greenery, fruits, grapes, wineries, mountains, fresh air, open space, cows, hiking tracks, relaxing country side environment and resorts.

The trip will start from Donmuang or Suvarnabhumi airports and will depart to Khao Yai, approx 2 hours in 9 seater vans. The return leg will be to the same airport. Note: this is raining season and a good time to enjoy being wet.

The trip objective is to evaluate Khao Yai on short term retirement, while for others, a few days of fresh air and friendly company. Both Bernard and Nicky will share with us what life is like at Khao Yai, what it costs to stay here and what activities we can pick up in the part of Thailand.

If you are looking at stay up to 1 year in Thailand, come join the trip.

Interested, please sign your name here. You may withdraw if the final dates are not suitable. Group limited to 30 pax.

This is not a walk in the park ….. this is an Adventure you may not want
to miss!

Let’s get closer to nature.. C’mon on, strap on a good pair of hiking shoes!

We will trek through some overgrowth, hike Uphill, to visit site(s) that once
even had disappeared from the maps of Singapore for more than 60years;
was rediscovered, yet hidden.

Note:
1st leg of this walk — depends much on the weather.
Should there be heavy rain on Friday, we might need to “change” route
as it might be too slippery to hike uphill & down.

IF above happens then will walk only the 2nd leg…. m still thinking :)

To avoid confusion, meeting place (**) shall remain unchanged.
IF you are not sure of the location of the meeting place, ASK early.

Strongly recommend:

  1. wear long pants, covered shoes with ankle socks unless you wish to
    get bites.
  2. Hiking poles — it helps as there ain’t railings or anything to hold
  3. Brollies, caps and bottle of water to stay hydrated.

As we might end at 2pm, I will provide a small snack.

Walk Team: Charles Wee, Veronica Wong, Mary Tan, Azhari

The SHC Bear Hug

This is an old post. As the new year is here, we can revive the SHC best hug again. Let’s give one another the hug after our new year greeting.

In recent days, some members including myself have been doing some bear hugging; and we thought it would be a good idea to develop the SHC Bear Hug.  Whenever we meet, we can do the Bear Hug.  Here’s how it works.

  1. Both hands forward, right hand slightly higher than left hand.
  2. Smile and walk towards the other person, and give a good hug for 3-5 secs.
  3. Works for both men and women.
  4. No kissing.

You can still operate with the typical hand-shake.

Terence Seah

Here are some advice for we silver hairs.

A Wholesom Advise for all of Us

Here are some advice for we silver hairs.

Between age 60 and death.
It’s time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don’t just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hard-earned capital.

Warning: This is also a bad time for investments, even if it seems wonderful or fool-proof. They only bring problems and worries. This is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet.

Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren, and don’t feel bad spending your money on yourself. You’ve taken care of them for many years, and you’ve taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter and support. The responsibility is now theirs to earn their own money.

Keep a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well and get your sleep. It’s easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. That is why you need to keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs. Keep in touch with your doctor, do tests even when you’re feeling well. Stay informed.

Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together.

Don’t stress over the little things. You’ve already overcome so much in your life. You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don’t let the past drag you down and don’t let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten.

Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: “A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection.”

Be proud, both inside and out. Don’t stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and creams well stocked. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong.

Don’t lose sight of fashion trends for your age, but keep your own sense of style. You’ve developed your own sense of what looks good on you – keep it and be proud of it. It’s part of who you are.

ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account and try to use some of those social networks. You’ll be surprised what old friends you’ll meet.

Respect the younger generation and their opinions. They may not have the same ideals as you, but they are the future, and will take the world in their direction. Give advice, not criticism, and try to remind them that yesterday’s wisdom still applies today.
Never use the phrase: “In my time.” Your time is now. As long as you’re alive, you are part of this time.

Some people embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend your time with positive, cheerful people, it’ll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you feel older and harder to be around.

Do not surrender to the temptation of living with your children or grandchildren (if you have a financial choice, that is). Sure, being surrounded by family sounds great, but we all need our privacy. They need theirs and you need yours. Even then, do so only if you feel you really need the help or do not want to live by yourself

Don’t abandon your hobbies. If you don’t have any, make new ones. You can travel, hike, cook, read, dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a kitchen garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf.

Try to go. Get out of the house, meet people you haven’t seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a park. Get out there.

Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much unless you really need to. Try to accept situations as they are.

Pains and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of the life.

If you’ve been offended by someone – forgive them. If you’ve offended someone – apologize. Don’t drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn’t matter who was right. Someone once said: “Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Don’t take that poison. Forgive, forget and move on with your life.

Laugh. Laugh away your worries Remember, you are one of the lucky ones. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life.

SHC 8 Jan 2019 monthly gathering at Velocity

Let’s beginning the year of the pig with the Jan 2019 mthly.  Many members would have celebrated a fun and memorable year end.  Before the Lunar New Year festival arrives in early Feb, let’s find sometime together to meet up.

This is a good occasion for members who wish to organise a CNY lunch or dinner, and forming a table or two among friends.  Members who are joining the Phuket to Bangkok self drive in April can also get together and meet up.  Better still, those who are non drivers and wish to join the trip as passengers can also look to partner willing drivers. Plse read Phuket post for details.

As usual and typical of monthly gatherings, this event is for you to meet new members and catch-up with old ones too. Come along and get to know people whom you can get along with.  Get to know someone who will come with you to our monthly gatherings every time. Find travel Kaki’s, mahjong Kaki’s, JB kakies, food lovers, or friends to chat. Cycling, walking or exercise friends.
