Chatline for makansutra kakis
I would like to set up a chatline for makansutra kakis. The purpose of this chatline is for friends who enjoy trying out new places which offer good and reasonably cheap food. Since most of us are retirees or semi-retired, we have loads of time to travel to such eating outlets. The recommended makan places should preferably be near mrt stations for easy accessibility. Wd appreciate if you could indicate your interest in joining this chatgroup either on this forum page or apps me if you have my hp number. I’ll be the admin for this chatgroup. You may exit the chatline anytime if you find that it does not serve your interest. And last, but not least, those who keep silent for a month will be removed from the chatline (no hard feelings about this requisite)…….
Hope that many like-minded people will come together for makan, fellowship and bask in the camaraderie of good friendship. Let’s make the rest of our life the best in our life!
Cheers,
Gabriella Chua

The man who planted 20000 trees
All the stories published under ‘Impact Journalism Day’ in the *Straits Times are inspiring, but the most impactful one for me is “The man who planted 20 000 trees.” I thought this is such a meaningful and good life and wondered how one can live a meaningful life, like Kartik’s , an ex-barber who has planted 20 000 trees and now at 75 years old is still planting trees.
From the story I distilled these pre-requisites:
- Serving others is the mission of life. The ex-barber would save some money from his earnings to buy the seedlings to plant his trees. He has never collected payment from anyone for his work.
- Philosophical belief learnt from his father who told him: “…If you just plant a tree, that will bring you far more blessings than any pilgrimage…” To me this is equivalent to “faith with work…”
In a materialistic world where consumers are kings, it is not easy to not work for money, but on the road less taken, where money is secondary, where serving others is priority, life can be very meaningful and fulfilling.

Monthly Walk – Nature in the Garden : A Green Treasure
Date: Saturday, 4 July 2015
Meeting Place: Boon Lay Mrt Station, Exit D facing Jurong Point
Start Time: 4.00pm Sharp, taking bus to walk site
Duration: about 2 hours.
ECs for this walk: Veronica Wong & Mary Tan
A nice place to explore. Climbing 58 steps to the summit lookout for a bird’s eye view of the garden. An amazing variety of wildlife and nature and is home to so many birds, dragonflies, butterflies and insects. Go through the freshwater swamp, streams and ponds in the garden. Try to spot butterflies and dragonflies flying around at the Butterfly Garden.
Venture into the walking trail which is just a path between bushes and trees The trail is a fairly easy route on an all-flat terrain except at the end where there’s quite a steep slope to go down and it is quite hard to gain a foothold on small slippery pebbles. This trail will only be available till 2019 so come visit before it disappears. Do wear comfortable covered walking shoes.
At the end of the walk, those who wish to have dinner can proceed to Jurong Point mall where there’s the Kopitiam and other food outlets.
Our Walk Team ECs: Christina CL Chan, Charles Wee, Mary Tan, Veronica Wong, Serene Low, Alice Seah, Jeffrey Lim, Azhari Cuttilan.

YAY TEAM SINGAPORE!
We shouted , we chanted, we clapped ,we jumped and then we jogged out to the field and waved to about 55.000 strong audience watching the 28th Sea Game closing ceremony last night!
It was a bit chaotic with only 10min rehearsal but it was fun and exciting!
I am glad to have volunteered for the Sea Game and have a memorable experience. The Game will come back to Singapore again in 22 years time but where will I be then? Only God knows…
By chance I found out another fellow SHCian Shirleen Kao also volunteered, so last night we sticked together chasing all sort of athletes to take picture with. And in the process hit by the big balloons several times ha ha!
Wonder if any other members have volunteered as well? (Either this or other national scale events). Perhaps you would like to share your experience with us too?
Hooray Team Singapore for achieving 84 record Gold Medals!
(PS. I volunteered for youth Olympic too in 2010.another memorable experience dealing with media.officials.athletes and had a close encounter with prince Albert of Monaco)
LPA – Some thoughts
A friend passed me some notes and forms on the lasting power of attorney (LPA). Because of the *abuse of the LPA by the China tour guide, I took a closer look at the powers granted to the Donee ( (person appointed by the Donor to make decisions on his behalf) by the Donor ( person who makes the LPA), and felt shaken by the ABSOLUTE power the Donee has over the welfare and assets of the Donor – shaken in view of the fact that the China tour guide was also the sole beneficiary of the rich widow’s (the Donor’s) will.
Very often the fiduciary role of the Donee is taken for granted and there lies the loophole for abuse. But then the Law will say that onus is on the Donor to appoint someone he can absolutely trust. I feel this is dangerous for the Donor as it assumes every Donor is wise enough to pick the right Donee. What if the Donor was under duress or undue influence of the Donee to make the LPA (as in the *case of the China tour guide)? Another case of challenge to the LPA has surfaced.
As the present form of the LPA is not foolproof, I hope the Office of the Public Guardian will refine the LPA and ensure that it is 100% foolproof.
*The China tour guide has not been convicted of the charges brought against him.

May Monthly Meeting for smartphone users, travelling, food, coins, dancing & singing enthusiasts on Thur 21 May 2015
May Monthly meeting of smartphones user, travelling, food, coins, dancing & singing enthusiasts
Almost everyone of us do have a smartphone nowadays. There are so many features in these phones. For this meeting we can discuss and exchange ideas on the features and on how we can make the most out of the features. We can also share on the various apps available for us to use. Many of these smartphones have so many features, that we rarely use all of them. We can share and indicate what phone we are using and then gather in groups according to the type or brand of phone. Each group sits around a table, and try to show one another what we have, what we know and what applications we have.
Although for this meeting we focus on smartphones but we also welcome everyone to come and meet up with one another and discuss topics of your interest. Lately we have quite a number of members who are keen to talk about coins and currencies collecting and their values. All others who may want to talk about travelling, eating or even dancing and singing are also welcome. Just register your interest and on that day those who like to talk on your subject will know how to look out for each other. I am also looking for 2 volunteers to help in the registration and facilitating of the meeting. Thank you.
Details of the meeting are as follows:
Date: Thusday, 21 May 2015
Time: 5 – 8.30 pm
Venue: The Gallarie Foodcourt 04-101/102 at Marina Square
EO: Bobby Bok
So, if you are interested in maximising your snartphone please let us know your smartphone brand, model, and we will try to arrange you by groups. Each group can have a leader; you can raise your hand later.
A great way to know one another better, and learn something which we may not know.

Old currencies used in Singapore
I was at the bank to deposit some money including some old currency notes that are legal tender when it dawned on me they might be collector’s items and worth more than their face value. I also have some Japanese ‘banana’ money that used to be worthless. I thought they might be in demand now.
Does anyone in SHC know the value of the old currencies shown in the image below? It will save me a trip to the antique shops if someone does. :) The image shows:
Top row (l-r): Japanese one dollar; Japanese fifty cents.
Mid row (l-r): Malaya and British Borneo one dollar; Japanese five cents.
Bottom row (l-r): Malaya one dollar; Malaya ten cents.
Coins (l-r): Malaya 20 cents; 10 cents; 5 cents – all obverse King George VI.
Square coin: Straits Settlements 1 cent – obverse King George V.
It was quite interesting scrutinizing these old notes and coins and thinking of the history of early Singapore.

Trip to Surat Thani from Bangkok
(Click on the map for a better image)
This Sat, Thais begin a long water festival holiday called Songkran. It is the Thai New Year. During the festival, adults pour water on the palm or back of their parents, as a mark of respect, while children and adults make the event fun by splashing water on the bodies of one another. It’s fun and thousands of foreigners congregate in Thailand to celebrate this occasion. Many thais start the holiday this Sat and ends next Sun, almost 9 days.
I am in Bangkok, and will drive to Surat Thani, which is in Southern Thailand, and will take me 10 hrs, with a number of stops. For those who went to Samui with me for the Full Moon party, you may remember we stopped at Surath Thani.
Starting from Sat, I shall write about my trip, put up some pictures and hope you will enjoy them. I hope you will join me sometime.
I hope to encourage members to share their holidays too. Keep in touch.

Farewell to Ex-Prime minister Lee Kuan Yew
Ex-Prime Minister LKY passed away early this morning. He had contributed immensely to what Singapore is today; and is indeed the founding father of our island home. Usually, SilverHairsClub forum does not dwell on political or government issues; but ex-PM Lee passing is a significant and important event in our lives.
Let’s open this post to members to offer their comments, opinion and wishes to the man who made Singapore and gave us the life we have today.
Farewell ex-PM Lee.

Launching the “Turtle Soup Group”
1st and 2nd pic – turtle soup
3rd pic ~crocodile meat satay
AndrewK and myself have been considering setting up an exotic food group for some time. We noticed that so far we had only men participants. So, now, we decide to take the group meeting further. We would like to start a “Men’s group” and we will call this group the “Turtle Soup Group”.
Both Andrew and TerenceS will be the group co-administrators. Turtle Soup Group will be open to all SilverHairsClub men, who have Whatsapp in their mobile application. This group has the objective to hunt for exotic food anywhere, meet when we find an accepted place at an agreed date and time.
We will try not to have many detours in our objectives. Essentially, it will be a men’s group.
To keep the group alive and meaningful, all participants must participate and not remain silent for the whole calendar month. Turtle soup members who are not active will be delisted. Participants can also delist themselves from “Turtle Soup Group” anytime.
Participants who have intentions to sell health products, discuss MLM, political issues, are advised to seek other discussion groups. However during “Turtle Soup Group” outings, we will let our hairs down as long as general participants accept.
To join “Turtle Soup Group”, please whatsapp +65 9489 4360 and type “Turtle Soup Group”. Strictly for SilverHairsClub Men members only. This may sound sexists, but we think this may be one way to bring the men out, up and together, via “Turtle Soup”. Of course, we will go out for Bak Kut Teh, crocodile meat or something exotic across the causeway.
Thank you partner AndrewK. Let’s give this a go. And welcome to the “Turtle Soup Group”

Different folks different strokes.
We are the product of the choices we made during our journey through life. Some would have more regrets to share than happiness. We blame our parents, our lack of education or circumstances why we are a failure.
If you have a situation in life where no answer is available , let’s share it here and see if we can get some expert opinions.
Let’s me start by enacting a real life situation. A close friend of mine age 63 met a fair lady from Myanmar, she was 42, divorced and have a 25 years son who is working. She run a beauty saloon with a younger sister and stay in her own 4 storey terrace house. After a three months whirlwind encounter, she ask him to marry her. My friend was ecstatic, she was sexy and young and this may be a golden opportunity. My advice to him was to be wary, maybe she just using you to get a better life here. You never know that once you sign the dotted line, you will start bleeding and never to recover.
Wat is your take?
Desperate Dan.
