SHC May monthly gathering, Fri 5 May 2017

Our last few monthly gathering was organised by Daniel Chan. it was held at Hans Cafe at the basement of Chinatown point.

We shall now try another location, away from the buzz of working people and shoppers. We make effort to keep to somewhere near the train station so that members working in various part of Singapore can get here conveniently after work. Food and drinks, we go for variety and choice. Seats plentiful, as this venue is crowded during working hours. So, here it is, details of our May monthly gathering. Strictly for SHC members.

Date: Fri 5 May 2017
Time: 1700 – 2030 hours
Venue: Asia SquareTower 1 Food court, level 2,
Marina View, Asia square, Singapore 018960
Near train: Downtown DT 17

If you have been there, please recommend an area to meet. If you have a special interest, do highlight here so that others know you are coming. You may introduce yourself here before coming, to make the gathering more fun.

The monthly gathering aims to provide a platform for members to meet new and old SHCians. Please register your coming.

Another Equities Sharing gathering in May 2017

Following the last Equities Sharing gathering on 1 Apr 2017, there have been more requests for similar gatherings. The interests range from very basic like “Starting a share trading account”, to “how other members are performing” to the usual “Tips”.

Yes, we can do another gathering. From the last event, I note that members wish to know who are the speakers. We do have issues with getting a venue, as participants have indicated not wanting to pay for the facility, and prefer to just buying their F&B from the counter. And, I see requests to have free F&B to listen to speakers. Sometimes, I am not sure how to have someone organise these activities, provide a free venue, provide audio and projection facilities, provide snacks and drinks and get value for money. We have always difficulties convincing F&B venue owners to let us use their place, for a token purchased drinks. Ok, so much for all the stumbling blocks.

Any suggestions? If you can provide any of the above facilities, please let me know. Let’s look at May.

Scuba diving as a hobby and sport

This is one particular activity which we rarely hear of in the Club. It is always associated with clear waters, beautiful Nemos and colourful corals, going out to remote islands and a day well-spent.

We have a few members who love scuba diving, and they go out regularly to their regular spots. And, of course, we have members who want to know more about this activity.

If you are a scuba diver or you love to find out more about the sport, please indicate your name here. We will organise a session for you to find Nemo together.

Cheap stocks – Do your own due diligence (DYODD)

31 March 2017 [Motley] These Are Some of The Cheapest Stocks in Singapore Currently

I have a habit of looking at how cheap or expensive the stock market is at the start of every month. One way I do so is to determine the number of net-net stocks there are in Singapore’s market.

A net-net stock is a stock with a market capitalisation that is lower than its net current asset value. The net current asset value is a simple financial number that can be calculated with the following formula:
Net current asset value = Total current assets minus total liabilities

Theoretically, a net-net stock is a fantastic bargain. That’s because investors can get a discount on the company’s current assets (assets such as cash and inventory) net of all its liabilities. Moreover, the company’s fixed assets (assets such as properties, factories, and equipment etc.) are thrown into the fray for free.

The logic follows that if a large number of net-net stocks can be found in Singapore’s market, then stocks would likely be really cheap at that point in time.

Now, I had stressed the word “theoretically” earlier because net-net stocks are often companies that are in serious trouble and/or have horrible business economics. This means that investors in them are also at risk of seeing their capital evaporate if things continue heading south.

That’s one reason why diversification is important. The legendary Benjamin Graham, who liked to invest in net-net stocks when he was investing professionally, tried to mitigate risks by diversifying widely amongst net-net stocks.

I thought it would be interesting and useful to share a list of some of the net-net stocks that popped up when I did my latest exercise of assessing the state of the market.

I decided to come up with three lists: 1) the 10 net-net stocks that have the lowest market-cap-to-net-current-asset-value ratio; 2) the 10 net-net stocks with the largest market caps, and 3) the 10 largest net-net stocks that have positive net income over the last 12 months as well as more cash than debt on their balance sheets.

Here are the 10 stocks in the first list: Universal Resource and Services Ltd (SGX: BGO), China Haida Ltd (SGX: C92), China Taisan Tech Group Holdings Ltd (SGX: AZW), Ace Achieve Infocom Limited (SGX: A75), Full Apex (Holdings) Ltd (SGX: BTY), Matex International Ltd (SGX: M15), China Sports International Limited (SGX: FQ8), C&G Environmental Protection Holdings Ltd (SGX: D79), Nam Cheong Ltd (SGX: N4E), and Cacola Furniture International Limited (SGX: D2U).

Source: S&P Global Market Intelligence

Here are the 10 stocks in the second list: Noble Group Limited (SGX: N21), UOB-Kay Hian Holdings Limited (SGX: U10), Hong Leong Asia Ltd (SGX: H22), Kingboard Copper Foil Holdings Limited (SGX: K14), Hanwell Holdings Ltd (SGX: DM0), Baker Technology Ltd (SGX: BTP), Sing Holdings Limited (SGX: 5IC), Cortina Holdings Limited (SGX: C41), Hengxin Technology Ltd (SGX: I85), and Tiong Seng Holdings Limited (SGX: BFI)

Source: S&P Global Market Intelligence

And finally, here are the stocks in the third list: Noble, Kingboard Copper Foil, Hanwell, Hengxin, Nobel Deisgn (SGX: 547), Memtech International (SGX: BOL), Nam Lee (SGX: G0I), Asia Enterprise (SGX: A55), CDW Holding (SGX: BXE), and mDR Limited (SGX: A27).

Source: S&P Global Market Intelligence

I have to be clear that I’m not recommending that investors buy or sell any of the stocks seen here. My purpose here is simply to share the identities of some of Singapore’s cheapest stocks right now. Make of them what you will.

The equities markets have come alive. Come and share what and how other members are reacting to global market changes?”

We are organising a gathering on Sat 1st April 2017 (April Fool’s day) from 2pm to 5.30pm at GreenDots cafe, right at STAR Vista, Bourna Vista MRT.

The equities markets have indeed come alive, from America, to Europe and Asia. It may be a reaction from the Trump effect, a possible trade war between the US and China, a lower un-employment in the States, and confidence that the world will swing either left or right. Now that TPP is off, interest rates are expected to climb and American companies will be going home.

Online Equities trading is a popular activity among seniors. With changes going around the world fast, we can hear what others are doing.

Please jot this date in your diary.

Price $20 per person.
Early bird (before 20 Mar 2017) $15.
A dish and dessert is included.
Strictly SilverHairsClub members only.

Music makes the world round. Where were you then?

A song brings back great memories.  When we hear a song, it reminds us of where we were, what age we were snd when we heard the song.  Songs bring happiness, sadness, love, romance and memories.

Songs bring back our childhood days, as fresh as yesterday. We remember our school fun fairs, the days when we gather with fellow friends at campsites and around the campfire.  Songs makes us feel romantic when we met our first love.  Sometimes songs remind us of how crazy we have been and how far we go to get what we want. We laughed privately at ourselves.

Here’s an old song?  Share with us how you feel?

“If you love me, let me know”,  a Olivia Newton John hit, 1974.

The festive seasons have ended… good time to stretch and walk off the flabs :D

Due to the recent incident of big trees being uprooted, our walk routes are limited.
In view of the safety for all participants during this rainy season, we have changed this walking route to a pleasant yet interesting trail!

For greenery, we will pass through 2 small parks; will see the only Buddhist temple outside Myanmar built in the traditional Burmese architectural style; a chic cafe; a villa built in late 1800s was restored and open to the public in 2001; Singapore’s first civil airport terminal built in 1937 but ceased operation in 1955 and used by various groups; other interesting landmarks like the longest HDB block.

There’s two end points, it depends on time, weather and participants’ energy level:
1) Kallang MRT or
2) Sports Hub

Bring water bottles, caps, umbrellas and cameras. Do wear comfortable walking shoes.

Look forward to your early registration! :D :D

30% increase in Singapore water rates

Last night, I was sitting at Perth airport, waiting for the flight to Singapore. A young man, who has been away for about 30 years, asked if I was a Singaporean. I replied “Sure, Yes”, and of course, I asked him “Why”.

He asked me if I kept track of news in Singapore, and if knew Singapore has announced a 30% increase in water rates. I didn’t believe him, but later, I sat down to read the E-News on my wonderful Blackberry. Wah, I was shocked to read countless comments on a 30% water rate increase.

My first thought was “what business in the world can increase its price by 30%? Water? Cannot be. Water is Life. Water is not alcohol and not cigarettes.  It is not sugar. How can a household paying $50 a month now pays $15 more?

What has gone wrong in Singapore? We already have GST which is pro-rated to consumption. This controls consumption.

This 30% issue is a current issue. It affects every household and business. I hope we can send a message to the government and the PUB, through our many grassroots members, that this is a serious matter. Feel free to offer your views and comments. Alternate suggestions also welcome.

No name calling plse, and keep this issue a non-political discussion.

If you have concern about the difficulty level, it requires at most 1 hour round trip of walking, except at Kings Canyon you have an option to take either a Rim Walk (3.5 hour return) or Creek Walk ( 1 hour return). I have tried to pick trails that is within our limits. If you are not taking the Kings Canyon Rim Walk, only Day 1 has slightly more walking. The amount of walking for all other days are no different from a normal sight-seeing tour.

If you are interested, please write to shctour@outlook.com. The early birds will get the worms, those register later might have to pay a higher rate for the air ticket. If you are interested, but need more time to consider, do let me know.

16 has confirmed.

Are all the names in the SHC database still around?

Honestly, I dont know.  I just know there are 6200 names in our email database. When we send out email updates, and if the email is returned, we strike off the name.  This is how we keep the email database clean, meaning the email address is LIVE.

We have about 2,400 members in our Whatsapp database.  Whatsapp does not have a way to tell if the person is still live.  But each month, we sent out updates to about 2,400 members.

In our telephone database we have more than 7,000 members.  Once in a while, we send out short SMS updates to members who are on this database.  The club does not call via phone calls to members.  Responses from sms are very good, and out of the 7,000, approx 1,000 members will reponse.  Unfortunately, SMS are an expensive commuication method.

Trump is a Twitter.  SHC does not use a Twitter account to reach out to members.

Today, we aim to update our membership list again.  A Whatsapp msg was sent out this morning.  It basically says, please acknowledge so that we know you are still around.  So, if you did not receive a Whatsapp msg from the club today, it means we do not have your contact. Please let your friends know they can update SHC by sending a msg to +65 9489 4360.

Google Cloud and its Application

Learn Google Cloud storing & sharing of photos and documents together with other useful Google Apps

Google has an equivalent sets of Apps (Google Document, Google Sheets & Google Slides) that work quite similar to Microsoft Office (Words, Excel & PowerPoint) and is free for personal use. Google and Microsoft files are not compatible, however you can convert Google files, for viewing only, in the Micorsoft format.

You may have a set of photos taken on your smartphone you wish to share with your friend but the attachment files is so large and is not possible to be sent by standard email account. Using Google cloud is one of the solutions that can achieve what you wanted to do. There is a (IT) Talk in the library with the following details:

Date: 11th March (Saturday)
Time: 3PM to 5PM

Yangon trip Thur/Fri 20/21 Apr 2017 “Meet other Singaporean residents in Myanmar”

The Club has done a few trips to Myanmar, in particular to its ccommercial capital Yangon.  Today, Singaporeans do not need a visa to enter Myanmar.

Many Singaporeans live in Yangon; they are either doing their own businesses or working for large companies.  As Myanmar expands and opens itself to the world, many seek opportunities in a country that was once cut off from the outside world. ATMs and credit cards have since popped up in most parts of Yangon.  There are more entertainment spots. More and more cars are being imported.  International schools, with one being run by a Singapore have established themselves well.  Many restaurants chains which you are familiar with in Singapore and the region are doing well, with a growing working class.  Myanmar has a sizeable rich and well to do consumers.

The Singapore name is well established and sort after in Myanmar.  Many Singaporeans have done well in various positions and businesses in the country. SHC members have asked to do another trip to Yangon as a club.  This time, we shall do a trip but it wont be a tourist trip. You can easily plan a trip with a travel agent.  I have allocated two days 20 and 21 April 2017 to meet resident Singaporeans and families who have been residing in Myanmar for many years.  We will likely have lunch, dinner or breakfast.  Yu can mingle with them, and find out more about living in Myanmar, their experience and the opportunities in this up and coming nation.

To keep simple, all participants book and pay their own airfares, and book their own hotels.  You may go earlier and you may leave later, but the dates are 20 and 21 Apr 2017.  You organise your own airport transfers.

Resident Singaporeans will be invited, and we will pay for their meals.  Cost likely to be double or in some cases, triple our share.

If you are interested to join this “Meet fellow Singaporeans in Myanmar”, please indicate your name here.  You may post here requests here.

An Eco thai community project combining cow breeding, rearing chickens to fruits and vegetables farming in North East Thailand

Last year, in one of the poorest and remote provinces, in Nan province, close to the Laos border, initiated an eco project to train the local thai communities on cow breeding, chicken rearing to fruit and vegetables planting.  The project started on bare land. The projects aims to bring the local thais together.  Mr Seri, in his mid 50s whose background is in agriculture, speaks excellent English, hopes to bring this meaningful project together and bettering the lives of the less fortunate people in Thailand

To have an idea of where NAN province is, Map, click here.

The projects starts from bare land.  There was nothing when he started last year. Today, he has managed to pump water from underground, build the sheds for dried hay to feed the cows, divide the land for vegetables, plants, chickens and cows.  And, you may not believe it, he has convinced the local authorities to provide the area with broadband internet.

There is so much work to be done to make this eco project succeed.  The project is still developing.  I visited the project last year, and have since been keeping track of its progress. For me, I have always wanted to help in meaningful projects in Thailand.  I like to invite you to learn and see how this project will develop in the years to come.

And, for members with a background in fruit trees, vegetables, chickens, cows and agriculture land, I look forward to your ideas and suggestions.  I shall also update you from time to time with pictures of the progress.  II am also ready to invite Seri and his wife to join as part of SilverHairsClub, Thailand.
