Language Tips: Frequently misused words

  • By chance i saw this *article about the English language in the S.T. Monday (28th) paper and i thought seeing it was better than seeing a $5 note on the ground. (lol!). Because of it’s educational value, i thought i should alert members who had missed it to check it out.
  • The frequently misused words in the article include revert, whereby, everyday/every day, less/lesser, mature/matured and welcome/welcomed. The writer explains how the words should be used and gives good examples.
  • Language Tips  series appears on every Monday and it’s a pity to miss these free ‘lessons’.

Retirement living: Looking to studio apartments for seniors for inspiration

  • Today i visited a block of studio apartments for seniors near Toa Payoh Central and was glad to see how PLEASANT the environment is. The common areas are SPACIOUS and CLEAN. The common corridors outside the individual units are WIDE and UNCLUTTERED. The units are small bed-sitters, bright with windows on one wall. In the bathroom is an emergency alert cord.
  • The two lifts are BIG and stop at EVERY floor. On the third level are two cozy GARDENS.  Seats are PLENTIFUL and INVITING!
  • Nearby are other blocks of flats, shops, a hawker centre, a market….
  • Could HDB adapt this concept of studio apartment living for seniors with smaller nest-eggs to cater to seniors with bigger nest-eggs by building bigger studio apartments and providing more facilities? But however HDB modifies/adapts, it must keep to the 30-year lease and the non- marketability of the studio apartments for the ‘richer’ seniors. These two conditions will keep out the sharks and the profit-driven entrepreneurs.

ONLINE FLEA MART – MAY 2012

  • The online flea mart for May is now
open for advertisements. Please familiarize yourselves with the rules
(refer to MARCH post) before placing an advertisement.
  • I would like to reiterate the
rationale for setting up this online flea mart: It is to provide an
    opportunity for members
to sell (or give away) THEIR OWN THINGS.

  • An advertisement where the advertiser
is acting the role of ‘middleman’ is NOT ALLOWED. NO COMPANIES may benefit, directly or indirectly, from this flea mart advertisement site.

Thinking outside the box

  • Bhutan, one of the poorest nations in the world, gave the world the revolutionary Gross National Happiness (GNH) index to determine the country’s growth instead of using the conventional GDP like all the other countries in the world. Now, almost everyone i know wants to visit Bhutan! LOL!
  • The ability to think outside the box can lead to breakthroughs in mindsets, business ideas, ideological beliefs etc. but because most people are steeped in conventional thinking, it is not easy to think differently from the majority and anyway, life goes on with conventional thinking…..hence, my interest in thinking outside the box is only a personal challenge and Bhutan’s GNH creation is profound (to me).
  • This question is just for academic discussion: Can thinking outside the box be nurtured? If yes, how can it be nurtured?

Constructive comments and feedback are welcome :)

ONLINE FLEA MART – April 2012

  • The online flea mart for April is now open for advertisements. Please familiarize yourselves with the rules (refer to MARCH post) before placing an advertisement.
  • I would like to reiterate the rationale for setting up this online flea mart: It is to provide an opportunity for members to sell (or give away) THEIR OWN THINGS.
  • An advertisement where the advertiser is acting the role of ‘middleman’ is NOT ALLOWED. Another advertisement that is NOT ALLOWED is an ‘advertisement’ that informs members of special offers a company is giving…please WRITE A POST to disseminate this type of information.

Old Age – The Last Lap

  • How does one want to spend the last lap of one’s life? with angst? with upset when one’s pride/ego is bruised? gripe? …
  • The ‘king’ in *Eccl. thought he was a superior being as he was very clever and good at acquiring power and wealth. Then he realised Death would come for him and LEVEL  him with the poor and the foolish he despised. Defeated, he lamented in agony "all is vanity and a striving after wind"
  • I would like to have serenity in my old age. Question is – how to acquire/have this state of mind  (serenity) in old age? What personal qualities/character traits would be an advantage in this quest?

Life’s Little Mysteries

He ‘lived his life on his own terms’ *
So brilliant was his mind – a latter-day genius,
So successful, so rich, the world’s adulation received he,
But he could not control his pancreas,
Neither could the best doctors in the world.
He died young – in his fifties.
Why? Why? When the poor and the needy sick
are still alive at eighties and nineties?

Reflection: The Cyber Highway

"Seven in 10 here are victims of cyber crime" – ST 10/9/2010*

How unreservedly they surf cyberspace:
Wonder if they know –
How unsafe the cyber highway;
Lurking there cyber criminals: cheats,
Thieves, terrorists and social misfits!

A theatre of germ warfare, cyberspace;
Netizens must battle with virus and vicious worms –
Expensive engagements – why bother,
When victories are hollow and nought to rejoice?
Is it a no brainer or Hopson’s choice?

Wonder if they know –
Seven in ten of them will
Victims become of cyber crime*-
A figure so high, yet nonchalant seem they
To the dangers on the super cyber highway!

Reflection: Ending The Pain

When life gets too painful to live on,
There is death to end the pain,
And none can stop your death act,
But oh, have you not lived in vain?

Her grief was hurting night and day,
Though no one knew; none could read her mind.
One early morn, she ended her pain,
And oh, her mother’s sorrow she left behind.

If life depends on one’s fate,
Hers must be among the saddest,
And Fate being blind, the living can only hope
Their lot will not be among the worst.

Barter, Swop, Hire, FOC…

Members interested in the idea of learning or receiving through an exchange scheme may be wondering how the idea can be implemented without fuss. Here I suggest two main ways:

1. Direct approach – state/explain your interest(s) e.g. to learn the cha2. Then state/ explain the skill(s) or service(s) you are offering  for the exchange/swop.

2. KIV approach – (a)state/describe your interest(s) e.g. learn to bake pineapple tarts and indicate your willingness to barter or to make payment. Then wait for interested parties to approach you.

(b)state/describe your skill area(s) or the service(s) you are able to provide, e.g. teaching craftwork, language, etc and indicate your interest to barter or to be ‘hired’.  Then wait for interested parties to make their offers.

If there is a ‘match’ of mutual interest, the two parties carry out their negotiation, etc. in private and they will be solely responsible for any agreements reached or decisions made.

Of course you can offer your service(s) for FREE. That’ll be the icing on the cake. I’m sure the recipient will be very grateful.

Feel free to offer your suggestions, feedback, etc, as these will help to shape the exchange scheme. Because it’s a win-win situation, I hope ‘barter trading’ will become a feature of the SHC.

Looking for a good home for a husky

 Hi all,

A relative is looking for a good home for his beloved 5-year old Siberian husky as his flat is getting too small for this big dog. Details of the dog:

His name is Ash, a dominant male. He is beige in colour and is sterilised. His weight is 34 kg and he was imported from Melbourne.

If you are interested to care for this beautiful animal, I’ll put you in touch with my relative.

 Regards,

Jassmine
