Moving on with Paperclips

Hi Paperclips members,

It has always been my hope that Silverhairs members are able to find like-minded friends. Since the club started in 2005, our activities are generally participated by about 80% females and 20% males. However the Club itself has registered about 60% females and 40% males. The question has always been why the inbalance.

As we get older, especially after leaving full time work, our colleagues carry on their lives. Nowadays, many senior club members find that our children are having their own family life. And for some, they leave the nest home. For others, our spouses leave us naturally, either through a divorce or to another world.

At some time, we are all left alone, with an empty apartment, no one to have lunch and dinner with. We have time to travel, but we are unable to find someone with common interest. Obviously, no one to chat, go out with, hold hands together, go to a cinema together or travel to nearby Penang together.

Very often, we then try to keep busy. Spend time with grandchildren. Watch Korean movie or roam Changi Jewel alone. Better still, some find our local kopitiam a place where we can debate the budget or find out more about CPF life from neighbours.

I had hope that SilverHairsClub will be a platform for members to find new friends. Today, I read an article in Channel News Asea on dating apps. I guess the article suits the 25-35 age group. But I believe the dating apps suits single SilverHairsClub members. The Paperclips program is for singles only. Plse read the article below.

I plan to be in Spore in May, and am thinking of having the next monthly gathering with the topic “Dating for SilverHairs”.

https://www.todayonline.com/singapore/big-read-short-finding-love-age-apps

For members planning to join the mthly gathering, the date will likely be 13-18 May 2019.

If you like to speak on this topic, please contact me at 9489-4360.

The SHC Bear Hug

This is an old post. As the new year is here, we can revive the SHC best hug again. Let’s give one another the hug after our new year greeting.

In recent days, some members including myself have been doing some bear hugging; and we thought it would be a good idea to develop the SHC Bear Hug.  Whenever we meet, we can do the Bear Hug.  Here’s how it works.

  1. Both hands forward, right hand slightly higher than left hand.
  2. Smile and walk towards the other person, and give a good hug for 3-5 secs.
  3. Works for both men and women.
  4. No kissing.

You can still operate with the typical hand-shake.

Travelling experience with seniors

A top activity among seniors is travelling. Many of us love to go JB, further to China, and further still on a cruise from HK. Of course, it costs money, but for many we want to see the world at 60, 65 and 70.

Many seniors prefer to go with a friend or a group. So, we join a group, but sometimes, our travel partners become enemies. And the rest of the trip becomes sour, and we never want to see the other person again. Why?

Teenagers, young adults handle social communication better. But seniors and retirees fare badly on many issues when travelling together, despite a good 50 to 60 years living experience on earth.

“I just can’t stand why she spends such a long time making up in the toilet”.

“This lady is a bitch, real bloody bitch. I will never go out with her again.”

“Who does she think she is? She thinks she is still young. I don’t want to be associated with such people”.

“This guy is very stingy. He waits and waits and won’t offer to buy you a drink. So kiam siap. I can pay myself. No need him to pay for me”.

How do we go out travelling together and still come back as friends? Better still as closer friends. Are we the perfect travelling friend?

Let’s chat without hinting at who’s the person. Let’s discuss how we can be better travelling companies.

Let’s beginning the year of the pig with the Jan 2019 mthly.  Many members would have celebrated a fun and memorable year end.  Before the Lunar New Year festival arrives in early Feb, let’s find sometime together to meet up.

Plse read Phuket post for details.

As usual and typical of monthly gatherings, this event is for you to meet new members and catch-up with old ones too. Come along and get to know people whom you can get along with.  Get to know someone who will come with you to our monthly gatherings every time. Find travel Kaki’s, mahjong Kaki’s, JB kakies, food lovers, or friends to chat. Cycling, walking or exercise friends.

Wishing all members a Merry Christmas

This is a good time to remember our good times together.  It is also a good opportunity to know how many friends we have made, since joining the SilverHairsClub, and how many we have decided to let go.

Very often, we wonder  why other people are just not nice at all.  Let’s enjoy the year-end and let’s wish our friends and fellow members a Merry Christmas.

Self drive Phuket – Bangkok April 2019

“Around scenic Phuket”

Next year 2019, I have in plan to organise a “Self drive trip from Phuket to Bangkok” for SilverHairsClub members only.

The period is likely April 2019, and unlikely during the mid April 10-15 Songkhran water festival. Approx 9 days in total.

Starting from Phuket, the drive will take us along beautiful coastal beaches, coconut trees, wooden villages, small seafood stalls, small towns and crossing the narrow land stretch between the Amdaman sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

This trip is for:
1. Drivers only with a valid Singapore licence.
2. Able to read and use Google maps.
3. The cost of car rental, insurance, car parking, petrol and toll will be equally split among all participants. Estimate cost SGD 100 per day, split 4 participants.
4. Each car will be 4 pax only. Each car will require to have two full time drivers.
5. We will not be driving inter-towns after 6pm. However, we will drive at night around the town at night. Therefore, drivers should not have night vision difficulties.

Start and end dates:

  1.  The start date will ne decided when all drivers decide, on a majority vote, on 15 Jan 2019.  Trip ends 9 days later.

Rented cars:

1.  Website: https://www.rentalcars.com/

2. Start point: Phuket Airport (HKT).  You may chose to start from Phuket Town.

3. End point: Donmuang, Bangkok. You may choose to end anywhere in Bangkok.

4. Budget rental: SGD 30 – 50 per day. Decision to be made by the two drivers of each.  For planning, please use SGD 100 per day for 9 days for all driving expenses.

Rooms:
1. Hotel room will be advised for 1st night in Phuket only. Plse wait.
2. All other nights will not be prebooked, and will be decided as we reach each town on a daily basis.
3. Participants should note we will go for 2 or 3 star hotels twin share only, approx SGD 30-45 per room night.

4. Non-driver participants. The front two drivers in each car will decide if and who they would take as non-drivers passengers.

Besides shared car rental, petrol, toll, car park, and insurance, the back two passengers will pay an additional SGD 15 per person per day to a pool fund for dinner, as recommended by the treasurer.

Unlike Chiangmai and North Thailand, this trip will see plenty of flat lands and long stretches of sea. Food wise, we can expect plenty of fresh seafood, southern thai food (spicy), both Chinese and Muslim style.

Plse note ALL participants will have to do some planning and research. We won’t be on a guided tour but our own holiday free and easy drive.

If you are interested, and meet the above requirements, please whatsapp me at +65 9489 4360. I expect to start planning in Jan 2019.

Please indicate if going as driver or passenger. All back seat pessengers are on waiting list, subject to driver approved basis.

Closing date: Max 4 cars only.

Thank you.

Private invitations to members with the intention to offer investment schemes

It has come to my attention that a number of members have been invited to private gatherings where the host and friends offer investment schemes to fellow members. Members are advised to be cautious with any investment schemes. And if members choose to go along the schemes, the decision and risks are yours.

These schemes usually attract seniors and retirees who have some sum of money and who wish to maintain or increase their retirement funds.

Members who are aware or have been offered such schemes can contact +65 9489 4360.

Coming this way early 2019, a late night out together

In the last 6 months, I have been thinking how I can make myself younger; at least feel younger. Even until today, I enjoy going out for different kinds of late night entertainment, from India to Vietnam to Cambodia, China and Bangladesh. Basically, I cannot sit still. The feeling of going back to the hotel after 1 or 2am with the heart still pumping at 90 beeps per min makes me feel satisfied after a day of dining and meeetings.

Guys and ladies, many of us are retired. Some of us are busy helping our chldren with their kids. Of course, some of us are still working. But, the Club has also numerous members enjoying a good night out dancing and singing.

SilverHairsClub has organised many dance events since 2005. We have our “One night in different cities” each year, and theme events. Very often, we have social dancing, a couple of ballroom dancing and line dancing. I am definitely a non-dancer, but I love a good night out. For many years, I find pleasure in bringing SHC members together. Music makes the world go round. And dancing and music always come together hand in hand.

Unfortunately, I find social dancing too slow for me, maybe too complicated for the body to cordinate with the hands, hips and legs. Sometimes, I get very jealous watching dancers twist and turn. And if I ever try dancing, I finally get myself all tangled up. I appreciate Line dancing; but I have never been able to understand line dancing. But I will still support Line Dancing, as long as someone raises his/her hand to be the EO/EC.

I like something hotter and younger. The above music video clip is just the beginning. If you like it, let me know. We will have a night out together. Let me know your thots and opinion.

Please regster ypur interest here. Dont be shy.

SilverHairsClub Business networking group

The Club started having its first Business Round table dinner some 5 years ago. We had identified that not all members joined SilverHairsClub for the purpose of social networking. For this group, their interests was finding business networking partners, identifying business opportunities and keeping up with global business trends. This is how the Business Round table dinners started.

Plse note this business networking group is not for Job seekers. It is intended to bring together those who are currently in business, incorporated in Singapore. Those in business, business development, sales or marketing can also join; subject to approval.

To cater to this business networking group, we shall reorganise ourselves as SHC Business networking group.

To participate, the requirements are:
1. Whatsapp your current business card to +65 9489 4360.
2. Indicate registered name and business.

We should have our first meeting, gathering or dinner in Aug 2018.

“One night in HCMC’ 2019 5D4N

Next year 2019, we shall have “One night in Ho Chi Minh City”. We are likely to add a 5D4N itinery together with event.

Our Club last trip was an all boys trip. It was hilarious.

Dates I have in mind are pre-CNY or mid-Autumn festival. But generally flexible.

Our trip will generally be in HCMC, and all the way to the Saigon River mouth to enjoy the majestic South China Sea and coastline. Motorcylists would enjoy this trip.

If you have a tour company whom we can try, please yell. And if you like to join the planning team, plse whatsapp me.

SilverHairsClub Group Leaders GL concept

SilverHairsClub has numerous small groups. When members meet members, and they click, a group is formed. The numbers in the group varies, and this depends on common interests.

SilverHairsClub supports the formation of small groups by Group Leaders GL. Each group has its own outings, its own chatgroup and its own interests. GLs updates their group on the SHC monthly gathering.

As I am unable to chat with members directly, the Group Leaders GL concept works very well for me and the Club. So, if you have a small group formed, plse contact me. Usually, your name will be tagged with the letter GL.

Group leaders GL stand up very well. They keep their group informed of Club activities, gather participation and has direct Whatsapp communication with me. GL do get direct updates from me and usually I do sought their comments and suggestions.

Join the monthly gatherings or interest groups, and you are on the way to becoming a SHC Group Leader GL. Find your interest and join a group,

SilverHairsClub’s objective is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends.

“One night in Batam” 2D 1N Sat 30 Jun – 1 Jul 2018

SilverHairsClub and members have organised a series of “One night Dinner and Dancing” with themes set in Taipei, Shanghai and JB. These activities help support a platform for members to get to know more and new friends.

This year, we had planned to hold our Dinner and Dance with the theme “One night in Batam”. We are able to create this event when Christine Teo, a keen dancer, volunteered to co-EO the dancing night, together with two days of sightseeing, lunches, shopping and a dinner at the M1 Hotel.

We will theme our event with Batam Indonesian culture and tradition. Members are encouraged to attire Indonesian style. Your room is just a lift away.

There are plans for music for dancing from disk/USB. We have a VJ in place, not karaoke or live singing.

A team of members BobbyB, ChristineP, DaisyY, YeoES, StellaS joined a recce event on Sun 10 Jun. We review the 10th floor of M1 hotel, surrounded by glass top to bottom, with a breezy view of the nearby area. This venue is bare, and will be redeveloped into a roof top restaurant in July. Birthday dinner for SHC June members

Next Thur 14 Jun 2018, we are having a birthday dinner celebration for members borned in the month of June.

This will be a Zhe Zhar evening dinner in Chinatown area. The June babies have already organised themselves for this celebration, and we hope to have the same celebration every year. We had done this occasion once before.

June babies who are interested to meet other June babies can contact Sue Chan directly, so that a seat can be allocated.

Strictly for June babes only.

** Those borned on other months are encouraged to team together to have their birthday celebration. This is a great way to meet fellow members to celebrate our birthdays.

HDB 99 year lease – a current topic

About 80% of Singaporeans live in HDB flats on 99 year lease. Many of us fall within this category, and we can read in the media that many Singaporeans and PRs are concerned about the remaining lease years.

Concerns include passing over to the next generation, ability to buy a used HDB flat when the balance lease is 40 – 60 years. Understanding the HDB flat is an asset and what 99 years lease means to retirees downsizing.

Let’s say our HDB flat has 40 years left, what can we do with these 40 years?

Let’s discuss, so that most of us can have a better understanding of this topic and it’s implication.
