Travelling around Australia

Hi All

I have ben reading all the interesting news of you all in Singapore. Hope to join you all when I’m back there especially for trips from Sinagpore. I am hoping to see more of Australia these few years especially parts that I haven’t been. Friends here too talk about going round during the cooler months.

Just to share – I’ll be travelling to Adelaide – cheap airfares are on sale and we are renting a car , sightseeing places as we haven’t been to South Australia and then driving onto to Victoria, going along The Great Ocean Rd. It will just be 7 days.

Life saving article on Stroke

To all fellow SHC members

Hope this article will prove effective in real times of emergency, especially to those members who have elderly parents / relative staying with them.  I think it would be useful too that we should pass on this info to our children for their knowledge.

"From a Chinese Professor .
Keep a syringe or needle in your home to do this… It’s amazing and an unconventional way of recovering from stroke, read it through it can help somebody one day.

This is amazing. Please keep this very handy. Excellent tips.
Do take a minute to read this. You’ll never know, ones life may depend on you.

My father was paralysed and later died from the result of a stroke.  I wish I knew about this first aid before.

When stroke strikes, the capillaries in the brain will gradually burst.
When a stroke occurs, stay calm.

No matter where the victim is, do not move him/her. Because, if moved, the capillaries will burst.

Help the victim to sit up where he/she is to prevent him/her from falling over again and then the blood letting can begin.

If you have in your home an injection syringe that would be the best.

Otherwise, a sewing needle or a straight pin will do.

1.    Place the needle/pin over fire to sterilize it and then use it to prick the tip of all ……10 fingers.
2.    There are no specific acupuncture points, just prick about an mm from the fingernail.
3.    Prick till blood comes out.
4.    If blood does not start to drip, then squeeze with your fingers.
5.    When all 10 digits is bleeding, wait a few minutes then the victim will regain consciousness.

6.    If the victim’s mouth is crooked, then pull on his ears until they are red.

7.    Then prick each earlobe twice until two drops of blood comes from each earlobe.

After a few minutes the victim should regain consciousness.

Wait till the victim regains his normal state without any abnormal symptoms then take him to the hospital.    Otherwise, if he was taken in the ambulance in a hurry to the hospital, the bumpy trip will cause all the capillaries in his brain to burst.

If he could save his life, barely managing to walk, then it is by the grace of his ancestors.
‘I learned about letting blood to save life from Chinese traditional doctor who lives in Sun Juke.

Furthermore, I had practical experience with it. Therefore, I can say this method is 100% effective.

In 1979, I was teaching in Fung Gaap Collegein Tai Chung.

One afternoon, I was teaching a class when another teacher came running to my classroom and said in panting,
‘come quick, our supervisor has had a stroke!’. I immediately went to the 3rd floor.
When I saw our supervisor, his colour was off, his speech was slurred , his mouth was crooked – all the symptoms of a stroke.

I immediately asked one of the practicum students to go to the pharmacy outside the school to buy a syringe,  which I used to prick his 10 fingers tips.

When all 10 fingers were bleeding (each with a pea-sized drop of blood),after a few minutes, his  face  regained its colour and his eyes’ spirit returned,

But his mouth was still crooked. So I pulled on his ears to fill them with blood.
When his ears became red ,
I pricked his right earlobe twice to let out two drops of blood .
When both earlobes had two drops of blood each , a miracle happened.

Within 3-5 minutes the shape of his mouth returned to normal and his speech became clear.

We let him rest for a while and have a cup of hot tea , then we helped him go down the stairs, drove him to Wei Wah Hospital . He rested one night and was released the next day to return to school to teach.. Everything worked normally.
There were no ill after effects.
On the other hand, the usual stroke victim usually suffers Irreparable bursting of the brain capillaries on the way to the hospital. As a result, these victims never recover.’ Therefore, stroke is the second cause of death. The lucky ones will stay alive but can remain paralysed for life.

It is such a horrible thing to happen in ones life.

If we can all remember this blood letting method and start the life saving process immediately, in a short time, the victim will be revived and regain 100% normality. "

Yunnan destination, dates and deliberations

Thus far 2 small groups have been to yunnan this year. Below is a simple write up by Victor Wee, his thoughts on the trip for those who need to know abit about Yunnan and wish to join future trips. There should be another one in October 2009. If you wish to go, please email me so that we can keep you informed which is better than referring to the posting.

There are some inquiries regarding doing volunteer work, teaching life skills, english or even doing simple, non competitive and non-stressful golden age business so as to have something to indulge in traveling. Again please email me at ethniceast@gmail.com if i do not yet have your email address.

Another thought floating around is the idea of short term stay and retreat living in "eternal spring Yunnan" where everyday is spring. There should be a link below where you can sight some of the photos, till we hear from you……emoticon

About Our Trip………….

Yunnan is situated on a plateau and surrounded by mountains mainly. The temperature during summer is about 24 Deg C and 5 Deg C in winter. It does not snow in the region, nevertheless the mountains would be snow capped. The climate is comfortable enough in summer seldom above 27 Deg C. The region is at an altitude of 1200 to 3000+ m above sea level from Kunming to Zhongdian (Shangri-La).

Return airfare from Singapore to Kunming ranges from $600 to $900 depending on whether high or low seasons and Airline companies. The very low fare of $382 is more a bonus. Taxi fare within the city starts at 8Yuan.  On average to places we frequent it ranges from   15 – 20Yuan. Public buses are very affordable at 1Yuan (we had not tried).

Inter-cities coaches cost about $25 and are very comfortable. The toilets at the pit stop needs getting use to. Interstate train travel on first class sleeper is about $35 and comfortable. The toilet on board is good enough but will need a bit of balancing act and squatting skills. The road and rail network are impressive considering this being a less developed area.

Meat and vegetables are readily available. Fish and prawns are the freshwater types with limited variety. This is not the place for seafood lovers. Vegetables are always fresh and plentiful. Wild mushrooms are wonderful, great for steam boat, but need to wait till raining seasons. Eating out and socializing is a must even for work and business.

The food prepared here are from what’s available in the markets.  You can have your meal from the roadside stall at about 3 Yuan or 20 Yuan at restaurants. Food is generally stir fried and is swimming in oil.  The oil used is rapeseed oil (not the best but I supposed it suites them well). Beer is at 3.50 Yuan per bottle. Rice noodle is a more common staple than grain rice. Beef is plentiful and appears to be the predominant meat next to pork. In the old part of Dali and Lijiang, dinning by the waterway is most interesting by day and night.

Serviced apartments in Kunming cost $50 per night .The comfort level is like 4 star.

Living in court yard inns in the old city of Dali and Lijiang cost $25 per night and was indeed a memorable experience.

There are plentiful shopping areas. In Kunming, the shopping facilities are like Home.

In Dali and Lijiang old town, the shopping is a world of its own where merchandise are sold in preserved ancient shop houses. Window shopping is also satisfying if you have no more money left. Leather (Ox or Yak leather) goods are indeed worth buying (ask the ladies on the trip). Bright spectrum of colors of the merchandise reflects the many ethnic groups of the region. Lijiang is very crowded on all days.  The crowd is like that of our Chinatown, and during holiday period, like Disneyland theme park. Dali is like Lijiang but a smaller scale and less crowded

Not much to say here except that TCM facilities and pharmacies are readily available.

Farming is all around and your waste would be put to good use.

Trekking will leave you no time for anything else.

Photography will run you out of memory space.

Language will keep your tongue twisted with the countless dialects. There are 25 ethnic nationalities here in Yunnan. Even yunnanese is a dialect in China.

Foodies will be well lubricated at toilet breaks sometimes overly. Need getting used to it and according to the season of the year. Every other taste here needs to be acquired.

In Lijiang visit the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Region and enjoy the fresh mountain air.

Watch the ever popular cultural show at the foothills and explore the region on horseback.

In Dali try the chairlift up the Cangshan mountains ridge.

In Kunming visit the Minority Village and be prepared to spend half a day. The Stone Forest region and Jiu Xiang (Stone Cave) will take a full day.

Hello Everyone!

I’m an ‘old’ new member – signed up several years back but was not active but am more free now so hope to be able to get to know you over the next few months. For a start, I’m on the upcoming trip to Padang.

I’m in-between jobs, just finished a stint at an international school which is now on its summer break. I’m an avid reader, currently it’s Philosophy. I enjoy yoga stretches and bends so I don’t freeze up and swim whenever I get near a pool.

Sleep

Dear All

Came across this article and thought I would start a new thread to share.

7 Surprising Facts About Sleep

Must-know info to help you get your zzz’s

Can’t sleep? You have plenty of company. About half of all adults experience insomnia on occasion, and 1 in 10 battle insomnia on a regular basis, according to the Cleveland Clinic. If you fall into one of those groups, chances are you’re already following the tried-and-true rules for a good night’s sleep: Don’t have too much caffeine (especially late in the day), don’t exercise late at night, keep your bedroom at a cool, comfortable temperature, and make sure your bed, pillows and linens are comfy. Those are all good tips, but there are lesser-known things you can try to help you get more rest.

1. Set a Bedtime Alert
Most of us already use an alarm to wake up in the morning, but sleep expert Mxxx Bxxx, PhD, suggests setting it at night as well. "I tell people to set their alarm for one hour before bedtime, which reminds them to begin what I call the power-down hour," says Dr. Bxxx.  He says you should spend the first 20 minutes of that hour taking care of any necessary chores (like walking the dog or making your kids’ lunches), then spend the next 20 minutes on hygiene (washing up, brushing your teeth, etc.), and save the last 20 minutes before bed for relaxation. You don’t necessarily have to meditate, if that doesn’t appeal to you; you can also do deep breathing exercises, read a book or even watch a little TV (as long as it’s not too stimulating).

2. Don’t Clear Your Mind
Experts say anxiety and depression top the list of reasons people have trouble sleeping. Part of the problem is that many of us just can’t seem to quiet that internal voice that starts rambling on about the worries of the day. Of course, if you can clear your mind, go ahead and do it. But if that’s impossible, don’t force it–you’ll only end up panicking about the fact that you’re not sleeping, says Pxxx Mxxx, PhD.  Instead, try slowing down your thoughts. "Practice saying anything and everything that comes into your mind to yourself in a slow, monotonous, drowsy tone," says Dr. Mxxx. It doesn’t matter if you’re thinking about what to buy tomorrow at the grocery store or how a big presentation at work is going to go. If you slow everything down and talk to yourself in an even tone, you’ll find it’s that much harder to keep worrying (or stay awake).

3. Count Numbers–Not Sheep
Another great way to quiet those racing thoughts is to count backward from 300 by 3s, says Dr. Bxxx. Unless you’re a math ace, you probably won’t be able to focus on anything else while you’re doing this, which means you’ll end up distracting yourself from your stressful thoughts.

4. Get Up a Half-Hour Earlier
Yes, you read that right! If you’re suffering from chronic insomnia, try getting up, for example, at 6:30 instead of your usual 7 wakeup time–no matter what time you fell asleep the night before. You may be extra-sleepy for a little while, but this is hands-down the most effective way to reset your body clock, says Dr. Mxxx. It works because it teaches your body that it can’t catch up on sleep in the morning, so eventually you’ll start feeling drowsier earlier in the evening.

5. Consider Seeing a Professional
A sleep psychologist is someone who specializes in gathering info about your emotions and your behaviors specifically as they relate to sleep. Often found at sleep centers, a sleep psychologist can usually help resolve your sleep issues in just four to six sessions, says Jxxx Oxxx, MD, a spokesman for the National Sleep Foundation.

6. Don’t Worry If You Can’t Sleep Right Away
You shouldn’t pass out the second your head hits the pillow. If that happens all the time, it’s a sign that you’re sleep deprived. (Ditto for nodding off during boring meetings and long movies.) Ideally, it should take 15 to 25 minutes from when you lie down to when you drift off to sleep, says Dr. Bxxx.

7. Go to Bed When You’re Tired
If you’re having ongoing sleep troubles, don’t worry so much about the fact that it’s almost midnight and you have to get up in less than seven hours. Forcing yourself to stay in bed when you’re not sleepy is just going to contribute to more tossing and turning, says Dr. Oxxx.  Instead, get up, do something relaxing, and go back to bed whenever you do feel tired. You might end up exhausted the next day (but that was bound to happen either way under these circumstances), and the following night you should have better luck getting to bed earlier.

Hope the above helps and look forward to hearing from members – cures etc.

Lower Back Pain

After the two posts on diabetes and gout, I thought I’d start one that I believe is a very common occurrence amongst older people, Lower Back Pain.

Several years ago,I was unfortunate to have a fall down a flight of steps, landing heavily on my behind. At that point in time, I didn’t think much of it as I only had some bruises, so didn’t get it checked by a doctor. After several months, I started experiencing aching pains in my lower back. Then and only then did I go and see a doctor, who thought I had an impinged nerve, probably a result of the formation of bone spurs, after the fall, which were pressing on the nerve.

Well, I have been living with it, with the help of creams and gels, physiotherapy and exercises and at times pain medication.

I have come across many claims on the internet that there are certain exercise regimes that can do away completely with the pain. How true are they? Does anyone know anything about such exercises? I would love to learn them.

Please share with us any tips on back pains, be it massages, exercises or any kind of ‘holistic’ medications.

Sharing Stock and Investment Market Info and Happenings

Dear SHCians,

The STI Index has moved up more than 40% since Mar 09. Most economists believe the worst is behind us, but nobody knows how fast and how soon our economy will recover. However, we know the stock markets move much faster and earlier than the actual economy.

For those with interest, it is wise to get prepared so that you do not miss the next rally and bull run in the stock market. There are also new instruments such as Exchange Trade Funds (EFTs) and Extended Settlement (ES) contracts much like stock option in the stock market today.

Drop me an email foost@phillip.com.sg to receive stock info and invitations to selective investment talks and events. If the response is good, we can consider starting our own Investor Club to help educate our members and share knowledge and experiences so that we can be better traders and investors.

August Monthly Walk – Bishan to Peirce Reservoir Boardwalk

Date: 1 August 2009 (Saturday)

Meeting Place: Bishan MRT nearby control station

Start Time: 4.30pm
Duration:  about 1 1/2 hours

EOs for this walk:  Jeffrey Lim and Charles Wee

Bishan to Peirce Reservoir Boardwalk

The walk will be in 2 parts. The first which many of you would be familiar with – Bishan Park, a very easy ‘civilised’ route on paved footpaths but nevertheless pleasant, amongst lots of greenery.

The second part will be across Thomson Road to Peirce Reservoir where we will walk along the water’s edge. The path though will be easy along the board walk with water on one side and forest on the other. The final stage will be through the forest but still along the board walk ending at Old Thomson Road.

Bring drinking water, an umbrella (for rain or sun), mosquito
repellent, camera, cap and wear comfortable walking shoes.  Note that
while mosquito repellent may be a good general precaution, liberal
doses may drive away insects that you wish to observe!

Walk ends at Old Thomson Road and for those who wish to, can adjourn for dinner at the Casuarina Road, the famous roti prata or the adjacent zhi char.

See you at the walk!

SHC Diabetes group

Some of us suffer from diabetes. I am one of them with Type II diabetes. I guess Singaporeans and most Asians are fairly reserved with sharing among friends their sickness. Unfortunately, many sickness may not be cureable but we can still maintain good health with appropriate eating, exercise and medicine.

This Post encourages SHC diabetics to share their experiences, their diet, their exercise program and their medical treatment. If you are a diabetic, I encourage you to be open about the sickness and we can meet once in a while to exchange tips on maintaining our sugar levels, and stay sweet.

(Members with other sickness are encouraged to start a new group and a new Post). When talking about your medication, please use generic names and not brand names. I hope this Post will help diabetics stay healthy and live a good number of years.

Got a lobang, call abang!

Just yesterday I received a call stating that I was selected to attend a survey. An appointment was fixed at 1:45pm today and I attended. The session was supposed to last for half an hour but stretched to about forty-five minutes! I was asked a lot of questions and when it finally ended I was given a token of $40.00. Not bad huh for less than an hour of drilling?

Some of you may be skeptical whether this is selling of time-share or spa services. Let me assure you there are also true blue company sincerely doing some survey for products to be launched soon. There may be other surveys done and if some of you were involved, do share with us what you went through and how you were compensated. I have also heard of some hospitals looking for ‘guinea pigs’ to try out some pills or supplements.  Would you go if the compensation is good?

If you think that the survey is good and want to recommend a friend to benefit as well, do refer us.  Dun know what Terence will think.  Are we advertising here? Sorry I just do not know what category this post should come under!

Memory

Two year ago, SHC had it’s first overnight & overseas event :

2D/1N – SHC Overnight Gathering @ Sijori Resort, Batam.

The idea was originally poached by Terence but relegated to my charge simply because I volunteered to help him with the logistic.  And so, I became the EO of this event.

On the morning of 07.07.07 – about 40 of us SHCians met at HarbourFront for this trip.  It was a very wet morning, raining meow meow & woof woof but it didn’t dampen our spirit despite the fact that some of us met for the very first time.

Two years on, many of these trippers became solid supporters of SHC.  Some even became EOs for SHC events & activities – ad hoc or regular basis.

Looking at the date today, got me all nostalgic.  I not only have had alot of fun but also got to know many fun loving gals during this trip.  I also found a buddy in Dolly & great friendship in Yew Kwong.

I wonder if others, who have gone on this trip, felt the same way,…. experience something special…. or otherwise…..

…… Willing to share?

….and thanks to Yew Kwong and Terence, here are photos for your viewing :
