Koh Lay Yim – Profile

Hi, my name is Koh Lay Yim and I prefer to be called Yim.  I’m married with 3 children and I work at home as  co-ordinator for private nurses agency. I love to surf the internet and play computer games. I also like to go for window shopping and usually go alone – a lone ranger.

I had a fall 6 month ago at the wet market and broke my right arm and was on cast for 4 months, luckily I recover fast. I don’t talk much but I’m not snobbish or proud.

That’s all and hope to make more new friends.

I happened to come across this website through the eNN newsletter. Being ‘kaypoh’ I opened the website. I was surprised to see the amount of activities going on in the Silverhairs Club. I showed my wife the website. She too was thrilled.

We immediately applied to be members of the club and was accepted, beginning of this month (June).

My name is Dennis, age, 61 yrs old, semi-retired. My interests are listening to music, watching movies and sports channels, eating, travelling and of course meeting people.

I hope we can meet in the near future, probably in the next get-togther meeting.

All the best

Cheers

Dennis

Hello to all of you at SilverHairsClub.  I am a newcomer!
Please allow me to introduce myself. Briefly, I am a single lady (I mean, never been married :D) and in my 50’s.

I have been working all these years in the secretarial/administrative field, mostly with multi-national companies, including a couple of offshore banks. A whole part of my life has been dedicated to my job. Although I enjoyed my work very much, but unconsciously I had actually neglected much of my social life.
I have just been retrenched and am now very free and available. Nonetheless, the word “retirement” is far from my mind. I will always want to keep busy and continue to use my acquired skills, knowledge and experience.
With much free time on hand now, I hope to take this opportunity to make and meet new friends, and do some of the things that I have missed out, like going to concerts, musicals, travelling, social dancing, gardening, cycling and Singaporeans’ hottest favourite – makan-makan.
If anyone of you out there shares the same interest(s), please let me know. I will be delighted to participate and meet up with you.
You are welcome to contact me at:  gingko.nut@hotmail.com

Chris Sew – Profile

Just call me Chris. A nickname that I have been used to since 18 of age. I have just passed 51 years, still working full time as Procurement Manager with an MNC organization serving near to 24 years.

My fave pass time is going gym (1,3,5 weekly) tossing iron and practising Qigong at outdoor park every Saturday and Sunday morning as early as 6am. Having found the mix of East and West exercise has indeed bring me to a new height of lifestyle and enormous increased of energy.

In truth fact, I have been practicing Qi Gong since late July 2003. This span of time certainly allowed me to evaluate the result of this gentle "martial art", not only as stress management therapy but it has unbelievingly improves on nervous system function and, more impressively, with regard to its great effect on my physical health.

I would not hesitate to recommend Qi Gong to individuals to all mature persons who are seeking to maintain or improve their health system and to remain free of chronic pain due to the aging process. Do give it a thought.

I have a two beautiful daughters, 18 & 16, still pursueing their academic, enjoying life to the fullest, I believe, just like me.

I am an extrovert, like having people around me all the time, in order to get work done "on time". Being a part of SilverHairs Club could be an avenue for me not being lonely during the ageing process.

I like travel, hoping to find good kaki to go backpacking though have never try before.
In fact, prior to my Procurement role, I was a Regional Sales Support Manager for the company doing a lot of travel. I have been to places around S.E.A. a lot, short trips all time, strictly biz and then back home. Never bother to visit places partly most of the time I was alone and could never wait to get on the plane to home.  Just being homesick.

Lastly, my best pass time is having coffee and cake and talk sense at the walkway cafe,
looking at passers-by, enjoying the sun, and of course get lazy…

I look forward to attend the SHC activity soon.

In conclusion, am I a man or woman or an orge, continue to make that guess…

Cheerio!

Chin Kim Sen & Michelle – Profile

Profile of Chin Kim Sen

Just call me Chin. I am 58 years old and can be considered as ‘Not retired
but  always taking 6 mths vacation twice a year’.  To some, may be
considered ‘sayang'(pity) not to be  working for the last 3 years but I felt
it is time to live for myself and for my spouse. Since my wife had a stroke
3 years ago, I stopped working to support her spiritually, emotionally and
mentally. I know she deserves my 100% attention after all these years of
marriage. She is much better now and we are enjoying each other’s company
and  of course, we have our fair share of bickering. This is marriage!

As for myself, I am still fit <grin>, considering that I go jogging and
exercising for 1 hour at the Woodlands Stadium in the last10 years. I used
to jog at 4.30 a.m. but now, at 5.30 a.m. to accompany my wife for qi-gong
after my jog.    Anybody keen to join us? Invigorating! We are also into
lawn-bowling lately instead of  the vigorous 10-pin bowling in the past.

Both my wife and I share the same concerns as our fellow silver hair club
members- retiring comfortably with S$500 stretched to its limit; going to
see the world as long as my kaki can carry my body- of course, sussing best
deals at travel fairs, airline offers, etc..;  living in retirement village
with people of same likes and sharing and exchanging our life experiences.

I look forward to see you all  at the next gathering and also the online
chit-chats.

Profile of Michelle Siew

Hi hi, great to be still alive and talking to you all on the web. I am still
young at heart tho’ not in age<grin>. I am 54 now but at least younger than
my hubby, Chin. I also retired from the workforce prematurely due to my
sudden illness. The haemorrghic stroke may have  partially incapacitated me
physically but not my spirit though. I want to live passionately, now that I
am given a second lease of life.  I am blessed with a devoted husband, 2
grown-up daughters, 1 son-in-law, 1 grandson and another grandchild on the
way…. Mmmm.. what more do I want!….

I used to enjoy cycling, 10-pin bowling, swimming, belly dancing and
line-dancing, but now I switch my interests to less vigorous activities  to
accommodate my physical condition like reading (which is still my first
passion), surfing the net, light exercises like qigong, travelling (free &
easy type), visiting the sick to comfort them, sussing  good and cheap food
(zi- char and the hawker fares and of course, still watching my waist line-
oops what waistline?)

My concerns also echo what you club members have! That’s why both my hubby
and I join the club. I  will definitely look forward to join the club’s
activities and see you all.

Joyce Tan – Profile

Greetings…

I am Joyce, a commoner. Born in an attap kampong hut 50 years ago. Single parent with 2 grown up children. Used to practice Yoga but stop 10 years ago upon doctor’s advice after my neck injury. Not good in talking, feels more comfortable participating in physical exercise.

Begin to feel the ‘Empty Nest’ now. A nature lover, I missed those days when I sneaked out in an adult’s bicycle at the age of six, roaming alone in the greeneries of the kampong, racing with dragon fly and butterfly, and waddling thru rising water with sea creatures, like sea snakes; crabs; shrimps and plenty of fishes, to reach home during the 3rd & 18th day of the (chinese) month (due to high tide)…..

As I’m working full time and due to my age, not sure if my muscles still can support me in activities like long distance cycling & hiking etc.  Hope to be able to join you guys in some activities some day when the timing match.

Cheers to all active SH

Hi All SHC Members,

I have registered many mths ago and have posted a few comments. I have found it to be very interesting and sharing concerns of interest to most pple here.

Allow me to introduce myself. I hope to retire in 2 years time but otherwise work to 62. I studied in Perth in early 70s and qualified as a psychologist which i am currently doing. My clients are pple with relationship issues, work/career, mild emotional problems eg anxiety, depression, stress, etc. I get immense satisfaction when my effort thro psychotherapy, counselling, family therapy, etc, results in their improvement and help them to move on. i am married and wife is a hsewife and only child just started his career after NS. My interests include jogging, table-tennis, fishing, cooking, self-development talks/training, and travelling.

My retirement plans include doing free-lance counselling work as a psychologist, spending more time lazing ard in OZ (say 6mths per year) and looking fwd to be a grandparent.

I welcome comments and other possible retirement plans from members. Hope to join some of the activities soon. will be attending the mtg on 16 May so hope to meet u pple there!

Cheers! Henry

Lily Ho – Profile

Here’s my profile :

Born in 1956, I am a single parent with a teenage daughter.  I was married to a French expatriate and moved with him to Cairo (4 years), Shenyang (4 years), Beijing (2 years) and France (2 years).  Prior to that, I worked and lived in England for 3 years.  My daughter and I returned to Singapore in December 1998 and the long-distance divorce procedure was finalized by 2000.

I am currently a secretary to the MD of a French MNC.

I am not much into sports.  In my early 20s, I used to swim 3 times a week, play a little badminton, table tennis and billiard.  I started bowling when I was 15, and for about 2 years, my average score was around 150.  Although I can do some ice-skating and skiing, my only exercise regime these days, is dancing.   I dance 4 to 5 time a week doing line-dancing, social and Latin dances.  (I was a part-time dancer for the People’s Association in my mid 20s performing for National Day and Chin-Gay parades.)  I also enjoy cycling for leisure.

Unlike Terence, I’m not into cheap and low cost travel because of safety and time factor.  When I was single, I travelled mostly alone either for work or for holidays.  For work, I traveled mainly to Asian countries.  For holidays, I traveled mostly to Europe (I’ve seen more of Europe than my French husband).  After I got married, I travelled only first class because my ex-husband wouldn’t have it any other way.  All in all, I’ve been to 36 countries.

Food wise, I’m the type who eats to live and not lives to eat.  I’m not fussy with food and will not go out of the way or join a long queue for food like how some of my fellow Singaporeans do.  However, I do pine for certain gourmet food such as caviar, fois gras, couscous, steak tartar, salade gourmande, moules, fruits de mer, tarte flambé, jambonneau, rillettes en baguette and paté de lapin.

My greatest concern is my daughter – that, I will bring her up well to be a responsible and sensible person, strong in her faith and belief.  So far, she hasn’t given me any cause for worry.

My primary goal in life – is to be strong in my faith.  My secondary goals, is to be financially independent, fit and healthy, and to remain active for as long as I can.

I joined SHC since Oct. 2005 (Terence, please correct me if I’m wrong) and joined the first cycling meet in Nov.  There were only 4 of us (Charles Wee, Andrew Yeung, Low Yew Kwong and myself).  Charles added bubbles with remarks on the pictures taken on that day – they were so funny.  I tried to attach these photos of SHC’s first cycling meet here but was not successful.   (Charles, may be you can post those pictures on the SHC website huh?)

Since I am asking every SilverHairsClub member to write about themselves, I shall start first.

I am 51, with a 30 years background in newspapers.  Family is in Bangkok.  Most Mon to Fri, I travel within the AsiaPacific.  Sat and Sun, I am in Bangkok.  Try SMS me, if you are around.  That’s why you can hardly find me here in Singapore.  Sorry, if you call me, and I do not pick up your call.  SMS/email excellent way to catch me.

Sports, I love swimming, lousy at golf, but am crazy enough to want to play, likes sighteeing, loves cheap and low cost travel.  I have not had enough of Thailand, and the rest of Asia.

Food – I love eating, but hates sugar in my diet.  Whisky is my game, with ice and soda.  Beer, if I am thirsty.  So, I am game for a drink, any time.  You know my contact.

My greatest concern is loneliness when I retire.  If I can walk, I don’t want to see only 4 walls.  I am a strong supporter of work and play, till I die.  50% of each, at least.

My dream for SilverHairsClub is to reach a membership of 10,000 by end 2008.  I love seeing SilverHairs being independent, meet regularly, be fluent in internet, pick up regular exercise eg walking, swimming,  and cycling.  I enjoy participating in business discussions, especially small businesses.

And, if you write to me, on this Post, I shall always respond you, in an individual capacity, not as SilverHairsClub founder.

So, please write your profile.  We all want to hear from you.

Hi,

My name is Lilian, I’m 50 years old, currently still working in a MNC.  Married, with a girl, who will be going to uni soon.

I have been branded as a workaholic from all my friends, so I really fear the day when the company retire me (closing down).  I hope that after retire, I wl b able to do some kind of charity work, as this is 1 of the area I have been trying hard to branch in since the past 5 years, but due to my travelling schedule, a demand from my job, I dont seems to be able to make it.

I also hope to meet up with all the members as I am not able to attend the gathering in April, as I wl b out of town, while I miss the D&D since I join only recently.

Joy C – Profile

I got to know of this club through a friend and after looking at the posts, I look forward to meeting the members and especially Terence and his team who thought of this idea and put it all together.

I am 36 years away from retirement…you may be wondering why I am in SilverHairs…well, I ain’t planning on retiring at 55 or even 62…ha ha…got you!

I enjoy nature, the sea, the beach, the parks…the rolling in of waves, the rustling of leaves, the smell of morning dew, the wind in my face, the hope of a new beginning with the rising sun, the warmth and comfort of the setting sun, the starry nights, the moonlight, great company, and all things fun…

I see myself taking part in the cycling activities, the talks, the chit chat sessions, the makan sessions (hmmm…I enjoy eating, but I take care to eat in moderation), movie nights, concerts in the park, the travels around the region…

Shall be meeting you somewhere, some day…take care…

Joy

Yes I do agree with you that I am still pretty active (don’t forget I am still in my 40s  ahem!) You can say that I am making hay while the sun is still shining. All around, I have heard and come across people who have already passed on and the realisation of not knowing how long we are going to be on this earth has made me resolve to live life to the fullest.
Why do I want to join Silverhairs?  To make more friends I guess, to find people of the same interests. To give an example, I enjoy going for plays and concerts but have yet to find like-minded friends to do so with. What do I enjoy?  Dancing, plays & concerts, scrabble, walking etc… the list can go on but timing has to be right! haha
So if you would like me to be actively involved in SHC just tell me what I should do and send me an invitation for the next meeting.  Bye for now,

Okay you see I have retired for quite sometimes and would like to consider doing some charity work, just that, I don’t where to start with. Besides, as I have to watch the share market all these years with my hard earned money invested there, that leaves not much
choice to stay home to monitor the share market.

Infact my family is very supportive for me to do charity work as my husband and our children are all working. I love children and would prefer to spend time with babies or small children in welfare homes.  If it is possible for you to make arrangement for me
to spend half a day with the welfare children.  I do drive and it will not be much a problem when transport is concerned, however, I am very poor with road direction as I am often driven by my husband.
