We write to share with you an event that brings cyclists across border to Johor enhancing friendship and an opportunity in community service – visit to orphanage

We are invited by Johor Bahru Tiong-Hua Chinese Association, Organizer of the 1Malaysia Carnival 2013 @ Giant Plentong. Guest of Honor is YAB DATO SRI MOHAMED KHALED NORDIN, Mentri Besar – Johor. Lunch is hosted by JBTalks

However, in addition we have initiated the visit to an orphanage as community service. We appreciate all participants to contribute min. of SGD10.00 for the orphanage. All the monies are to be handed to Ms Anna Seet to purchase gifts and/or outright cash donation upon our visit.

There are two options to join: (PLEASE REPLY AS TO WHICH OPTION by Sept 07 2013)
A) Take the coach with bicycle from Kranji (MRT) across the border and return – Min 15 participants (to pay SGD20.00 per person coach fare)- Part sponsorship by JBTalks
B) Cycle on your own/group across the border (meeting point @Shell Kiosk – JB) and return on own bicycle.(FREE)

Brief Program – Sunday SEPT 15 2013
0645hr – Meet at Kranji MRT to board coach or cycle across the border and greeted by Happy-Riders Connect (HRC) friends who will be riding together and lead. En-route to the orphanage shall have brief stop for breakfast. Thereafter proceed to the celebration to meet GOH and after lunch will cycle back to Johor town to disperse and board coach or cycle to Singapore.
Total distance: 40km (+/-)

In less than 2 weeks, the wedding dinners will be in vogue during the lunar eighth month. I myself, received an invitation.

This bring to mind, a recent viral condemnation of a bride who chastised her friend through social media, after receiving $50 each from her and partner as wedding ang pow. In the message, the bride even listed down the cost of the dinner, reception & cocktails, that worked out to $200 per head. As a result she and husband were very much short on paying off the reception.

With above in mind, I’m wondering …….
a) Do wedding couples have great expectations that guests must give enough to cover cost of their wedding banquet? (even if wedding couples choose to be extravagant and throw high end dinner?)
b) Is it obligatory for invited guests to give enough to cover for wedding couple’s banquet?
c) Is it not acceptable for invited guests to give whatever they are comfortable with. (Case in point – If one only earns $1000/mth or unemployed, is he or she expected to give $200 ? What if there’s more than one invitation during the wedding season, that person will be in financial difficulty for that month.
d) Is it not totally rude and unbecoming of newly weds to demand and confront your friends for giving too little ?

When I read definitions of Phobia:

I was, like, hey, sounds like most SHC members……….fear of writing/chatting.  Kekekekeeee.

Seriously, darlings, we are in this club not just to attend activities/gatherings etc, we are also here to make frens and to know others, let us hear your thoughts, views, experience etc.

So, tell us your phobias.  I shall start with mine.

I was totally, totally petrified of cats when I was young but thank goodness I have overcome it.  To cut a long story short, I sat ten feet away from a fren’s cat and the cat seemed to know I was scared of her and she approached me very slowly while my heart was pounding to death.  Finally she climbed on my lap, again extra slowly, laid down and fell asleep.

I thought I would die but surprisingly, my panic gradually subsided and I even stroked her!  From then on, my fear of cats slowly disappeared; thanks to this sweet, adorable cat.

I’m trying to get more coffee kakis for those staying in the East.  Details are as follows:

Every Thursday from 2 – 4 pm
Venue: Singapore Post Centre Food Court (next to the Paya Lebar MRT station) – easily accessible
Purpose: Just chit chat over some coffee ~ pastime, pastime… a platform to meet new friends.

There is a variety of Chinese, Malay, Indian, Japanese food, cold/hot desserts, coffee, tea and other beverages at the Food Court.

The next coffee meet will be held on 19th September.   Of course, members from the other parts of Singapore are most welcome to join in the fun. Wd appreciate if you could indicate your interest by registering here?

I have heard this a gazillion times and each time it makes me wonder, too, cos my ex always remembers and I must say, those were the moments I cherish till today; not just the flowers, gifts and a nice dinner, but the thought behind it to make my b-days memorable.

This topic is not just for husbands/boy frens/partners to ‘come clean’ kekekekee and tell us why but it’s also for wives/girlfrens/partners to share with us how they feel.  Some may not think the b-day is such a big deal so what’s the fuss?  Others may feel…………..

Recently, Yew Kwong suggested that we add a counter to our website SilverHairsClub.com. Personally, I am reluctant to add the counter as it has negative implications too.  That’s why the counter was not added earlier.

In view of his wisdom, I have agreed.  A counter has been added at the bottom of our website.  This was added on the 15 Aug 2013, starting from 0000.

So, let’s try and monitor the counter.  Will be useful to our committee too.  Thank you Yew Kwong.

We often hear of abuse, neglect and abandonment of the elderly.  It’s heart-wrenching when we come across such cases.

Recently I had a chat with a friend who feels that the elderly/seniors do take things for granted because the society is ‘over protecting’ them.  I went, ‘Hmmmm, interesting.’

So, have you been taken for granted by the elderly/seniors or know of such a situation?

Can we can collate a time-table of the day/time/activity/location so that SHC members who need to get their joints/muscles moving know where to go?

Today Sun is probably one of my 15 trips this year to Yangon, the commercial city and former seat of the Myanmese government. I was so tired after a late night on Friday, enjoying the drinks and food, and celebrating Singapore Nation Day at the famous Sedona Hotel. It was kind of nostalgic celebrating our ND, with the dignitaries and ambassors in a foreign country, and listening to Majullah Singapore. And today, I spent the entire Saturday with a friend, enjoying the food delights of Yangon Chinatown. I had a rich tasty bowl of minced duck porridge, a big peech, a durian which is different from that of Thailand, a grilled fish, perfect in everyway, two solid meat bakchangs and two ang gu kuays.

Reflecting on the last two days, I sensed for many of us, the scenes, the food, the people and the old ways, would bring back memories 35-40 years ago.

There are many Singaporeans who have set up home in Myanmar. There is a Singapore Club called SAM, and there is a Singapore kitchen for anyone who is homesick. It’s the home of Singaporeans. Many speak Myanmese, as fluent as I speak Thai.

It daunts on me that Myanmar is the last country to open itself up to the world. Other than N Korea, Myanmar is the place to explore now. Myanmese love Singapore and Singaporeans. Because there are hotels built by Singaporeans, there are Singapore banks and there areSingapore investments. Singapore offers education to Myanmese and many work and study in Singapore.

See how the gals apply a natural powder on their faces, tightening their skins and how pleasant they are. The guys are handsome, if that’s what you are looking at.

A bowl of streetside noodles would cost 50 cts to 1 SGD. Enjoy the taxi without aircon, and for an extra USD1, you get the aircon turned on.   Many famous temples all over the country. If meditation is your like, Myanmar is the place. Off design jade at USD1 per piece.

There are two ways to get to Yangon. Direct from Spore on Jetstar, or from the old Bangkok airport Donmuang. Booked the right time, the air tickets are a great price for now.

Obviously, being an old city, it has cockcroaches, big ones too. No super highways like the KPE, it’s still a very nice old place. Yangon is growing, and before long, it will be like HCMC.

Take this opportunity to see Myanmar The markets are plentiful, plenty of Jade, no need to worry about fake jade.  The girls no longer wears jeans. They wear skirts, just like every young lady in Singapore.  Come speak Mandarin and Teochew.

I plan to go in Sept, but the more suitable date is in Nov. Weather is cool and dryer, so you can bring a jacket. I have also found a 4 star hotel, with a live band, where you can dance the whole night.

The SilverHairsClub was not started as an intended organisation by the original founders.  However, it has progressed itself to be a stable social group, using the internet to gather friends.

There are many ways to start a blog, and making it into a Club.  We use the WordPress application software, host the Club at a major home in Singapore and manage SHC to what it is today.

I intend to show you how this SilverHairsClub is started and taking you through the steps in detail.  This includes buying a name, a space, determining the size, protecting it and making sure it runs every year.

Due to my limited time in Singapore, the course will be for serious members.  Conducted over 3 days during weekends, 4 hours per session.  The workshop will cost no less than $150 per member and $300 per non-member.  This excludes cost of domain names, hosting fees.  Experts will be invited to ensure you get a fully running blog or Club.  Those who wish to learn, without getting a name and hosting, pay only the min $150.  At the end of the couse, you will know what makes SHC ticks and what does it costs to run SHC as a Club.

The course starts in Nov for 3 consecutive weeks.  Those who registers and pays before 31 Aug 2013 gets a 15% discount.  Those who cancel by 31 Oct gets a 80% refund.  No computers provided.

The walk : After the Pipeline Ramble X-treme and the Rail Corridor X-treme, this is a walk in the park, literally.

This walk will be broken down into several stages, totaling about 13.5 km. Those who don’t want to do the whole walk can join/leave the walk at the various way points. Times given are approximate depending on the pace of the group.

Start point – East Coat Park, 10 am.

Way point 1 – Break at Block 739 Bedok Reservoir Road (next to Sheng Siong Supermarket). 12 noon to 1 pm. This will be the lunch point.

Way point 2 – Break at Tampines MRT/Town Centre, 2.30 pm.

End point – End at Pasir Ris Park, 4 pm.

The end point is at Pasir Ris Park in time for happy hour ( 2 for 1) at one of the beach bars. There isn’t much else by way of food or drinks at the park and those who are not inclined for an afternoon tipple, should stock up at the last way point (Tampines MRT/Town Centre).

Where will you be during National Day?  This time, it looks like we have a long weekend, and many members will be away with friends and families.  Many Singaporeans will also be here, and trying to get a glimpse of the parade, either on TV or try to get a seat infront of the parade.  Others would try to find a place to see the fireworks.

I read in the papers you can get a room at the Trafalgar Hotel for SGD 800 a night.  Still others can find a place at some rooftops facing the marina bay.  I thought the Marina Bay food court with a good frontage, facing the bay, is also good, until somebody told me I have to queue from 3pm.  And, maybe cannot sit too long.

Do you have an office facing the bay? or some secret hideout, not known to many people. Share with us where you will be on National Day night.

This is not an advertisement for another organisation but merely information for those who are keen to continue learning Infocomm Technology (IT) subjects. Each year, IDA will hold SID in the 3rd or 4th quarter of the year. People who are aged 50 and above are their targets. During this period, IT subjects relevant to today’s living are conducted at various centres like Polythenic and ITE. Subjects on various topics are offered at very cheap rates of $10 per session of 3 hrs (hope I remember correctly). Besides these offered subjects, participants can also participate in seminar and talks to enhance learning and get to know IT matters better.

As my travel schedule gets tighter from the 2nd half of 2013, and as no member has volunteered to run and take over SHC, I have decided that we shall have a committee to manage SilverHairsClub.  I assume that most of the current guidelines and practices will continue to be the same.  But, I shall leave them to the committee and the head of this committee.

The SilverHairsClub.com as a website is owned by SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd.  SHC will have its freedom to organise and manage as it is now.

After the Cabaret night and the Membership drive, I shall call a meeting for members who would like to be in this committee.  Those who wish to offer suggestions and ideas can also come.  However, it is likely the committee will comprise of do’ers.

The date for the meeting is set for Mon 5 Aug Fri 2 Aug 2013  1830 to 2100 hrs. (2.5 hrs). Place will be advised.

For those who are interested to be in the committee or to head the committee, please keep this date in your diary.  Anyone who likes to lead the meeting can also let me know.

Many members have identified yourself among certain interest groups eg dancing groups, travel groups, mahjong groups, badminton groups, cycling groups, etc.  However, some of you are still finding the groups that match your interests, hobbies and needs.

Your present individual membership does not have the details.  It is also quite labour intensive to help these groups form.  SHC has created a database of hobbies and interests.  If you like you can join the different SHC interest groups.  There is no requirement for you to join if you just wish to keep in touch with the club.
