SilverHairsClub

The SilverHairsClub is a social club, mainly for Singaporeans, and targetting those who are 45 years and above.  The Club’s key objective is to provide a platform for members to meet new and more friends.

SHC, in short for SilverHairsClub, revolves around a virtual club named SilverHairsClub.com.  This is accessible by all members as well as members of the public.   Members can enter the Club, as long as they have an userid and a password.

The Club has been very successful and active, and this is attributed to the many SHC members who help to bring other members together, by organising physical and real-life activities.  Members who organise activities strictly for members are called Event Organisers EOs”; while members who organise activities for members as well as non-members, are called Event Coordinators ECs.  All these roles are voluntary.  In return, we encourage members to do their part by organising activities for other members too.

Every club has its rules; and SHC, being a social club, does not permit discussions on politics, race, religion, sex, direct selling and MLM on its forum and activities.  We have been more relaxed on advertising, and we can now accept paid advertising.  Cooperations with external organisations or groups can be made via its Corporate membership.

I have tried to handover the running of SHC to interested members, by mid 2013; but unfortunately, there has been no response or interest.  While I would still keep this option as open, I think I would not delay a change further.  Most of the feedback centred around having a committee.  I have thought about it and shall give it a go. However, EOs and ECs are still free to continue to organise activities as they seem fit.

Currently, we have the following members providing supporting roles in SHC.  They are:

1. Loh Yew Kwong – supporting members who have difficulties with Posting and comments.
2. Lily Ho – supporting members who have difficulties with Posting and comments.
3. Dolly Lim – supporting members who have difficulties with Posting and comments.
4. Lee King Seng – role of picture manager, uploading photos onto our website.
5. Jassmine Teo – runs SHC online Fleamart, every month as a free personal advertising service to members.
6. Membership role – role of increasing Club’s membership
7. Media relations – Daniel Chan, liaising with media companies, interviews and spokesman
8. Public relations role – Coordinating with external organisations
9. Sports – supporting and encouraging more sports activities.
10. Charity – encouraging and supporting more charity events.
11. Small business – previously called the Round Table.
12. Advertising – looking at means of generating advertising revenue.
13. Jobs – encouraging and supporting job opportunities for SilverHairs.
14. Others.

Hi All, I am currently pursuing the Specialist Diploma in Health Promotion at Nanyang Polytechnic. My group is undertaking a project to find out the needs of caregivers of dementia patients. The internet and brochures from the hospital/day centres etc are some areas where caregivers have access for information. But it is mostly "too technical" or "too general".. As such, my team mates and I are interviewing caregivers to find out the "gaps" and attempt to consolidate a "survival kit" for caregivers, both professionals (such as doctors/nurses) and non-professionals (such as spouse/children/relatives/etc). Cabaret Night can come alive again this year.

I wonder whether those who attended the last “Shanghai Cabaret Night 2010” still remember the event of glamour and nostalgia. Well, perhaps we can revive the occasion.

The owners of the last SHC Cabaret Jeffrey and Geraldine have just sold off their stakes to a rich tycoon couple.  Together, the couple run a few nightclubs in Shanghai. Hongkong, Singapore and Taipei.  The guests are mainly the rich and well-to-do and those who love drinks and songs.  Each night, limousines and rolls royce would stop at its main entrance.  A MRT train runs by the Cabaret.  Elegantly dressed ladies and huge pouch men, accompanied by body guards would turned up nightly at its doors.

There is fun and lots of money roll around each night. The stage is well set, with Chinese decor and dimmed lights.  Beautiful singers come on stage each night and they would sing songs to bring out memories of love, the past and nostalgia. There are also free lance ladies and guy dancers who can dance with the guests, for USD 5 per song.

Cabaret Night 2013 is a sequel to Shanghai Night 2010.  This is an evening of drinks, dancing, chit chat and business deals.  It’s also an evening to entertain your clients, whether you are a rich business tycoon or a lady boss running a chain of restaurants.

Of course, there is room for those who want a night out for drinks only, so as to forget the world of saddness, revenge and love loss.  Guests can end the evening with more drinks and Taiwanese porridge at the night market.

Guys and gals, this Cabaret night is a theme event.  The city is Taipei. Most Taipei people speak Mandarin, Min Nan (Hokkien) and some English.   This event is strictly and exclusive to SilverHairsClub members. The cabaret serves drinks, no food.  Tips of one USD is common to all service staff.  Mainly there will be songs, drinks, dancing and anything the worldly earth brings us.  Strictly no line dancing. Songs are mainly Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese and a few English.  The era is 1970s.  Bouncers will be at the door, so good behaviour, proper dressing.

Please note this event is themed around a nightclub cabaret, and not intended to support perceived negative morals.  The idea is to bring back the good old days, listen to old songs, good fun and enjoy the company of fellow SilverHairsClub members.

No details of the event yet.  Let’s plan together,perhaps over the next two months, and make it an event to relive past memories of the 70s.  Nothing has been set yet.  There is a likelihood this event will be held in June or July 2013, at the previous place where Shanghai Night 2010 was held.

Shanghai Night 2010 was held without conducting a single meeting, except for a couple of live singing trials. I look forward to Cabaret Night 2013 being conducted without a single meeting too. The exact date of the event will be announced, once the place and date are confirmed. All discussions will be held at the Club SilverHairsClub.com.  You are invited to participate.

We are planning to send ONE TEAM (or TWO TEAMS if there are more riders) from SHC to participate in this 05May2013 LCSG 128km Round Island Ride.

The following SHCians have graciously agreed to be our trainers, to prepare our SHC Team of Riders for this event. They are:

1. Andrew Thio (available for training rides on Wednesdays = OK, Mondays and Fridays = May Be)
2. Douglas Chan (available for training rides on Saturdays = OK, Sundays = PM only)
3. Loh Yew Kwong (available for training rides on Sundays = OK)

A training schedule planning is in the pipeline but will most probably starts on week 06/52.

As for training routes, we will keep to the same routes/circuit for the first few weeks. We can gradually increase the numbers of loops round the same circuit to simulate the distance of 128km.

At the middle or later part of the training (perhaps in week 12/52), we will go riding on portions of the actual 128km route to get all the SHC participating riders to be familiar with the 128km route.

Near the end of training (perhaps in week 16/52), we will ride the complete actual 128km route as a trial ride (but not for simulating the speed but to get a feel of the complete route in one go at slower pace to test stamina and endurance etc….)

Then we will have a break or cooling-down period (of about two weeks) to prepare ourselves mentally and physically for the D-Day ride on week 19/52 i.e. 05May2013.

Lastly, please note that the LCSG 128km Round Island Rides are mainly on ROADS. So, you must be comfortable riding on roads. There are mandatory rules and safety considerations as well as qualifying rides to be met before you can ride on 05May2013. This is the reason why we have to be trained and have to be committed to the cause and to the SHC team as a whole.

NOTE: If you are keen but not sure if you can make it and would like to give your best shot, please raise your hands here too. Our trainers will put in their best foot forward and if, at the end of the day, you really cannot heck it (dropping out), we are OK (no problems!) with it. Because, at least, you have given it your best shot (and live with no regrets). That’s really good enough rewards for me and for the trainers.

Timings:

08:30am – Gather at Mushroom Cafe for registration, introduction, drinks and chit-chat before riding

09:00am – Start of Cycling / Move-out (NOTE: If we can move out earlier, we will do so once all registered riders are present!!)

10:15am – Break at Blk 418 Yishun Ave 11 at Srisun Prata or Ameeros Islamic Food at Blk 417 Yishun Ave 11.

11:00am – Move-out and return back to Mushroom Cafe

12:00noon – Lunch at Mushroom Cafe or elsewhere, up to you cos ride ends at Mushroom Cafe.

As usual, please ride with appropriate personal "gears/attire” for personal safety reasons. It will be quite hot during the return route, kindly apply sun-block, have your shades on, sun-hat, arm-warmers etc…

For those riders who need to rent a bike, kindly be at Punggol Bike Rental Kiosk BEFORE 8am, select and rent your own bike!! Please do not wait for me!!

I will be there at 8am SHARP to bring/lead you all from Punggol Park to Sengkang Riverside Park. I will only give you a grace period of 5mins.

Thereafter, I will leave at 8:05am to lead whoever are ready with their rented bikes. I will wait for slow riders but certainly not LATE COMERS to avoid wasting other riders’ time!

Lastly, if you have decided to have your own plans on how or when or where you will change route well before the start of the ride, please have the courtesy to inform me first/prior to the start of ride. THANK YOU!

Calling those who want to learn line dancing………

I am organizing a line dance interest group for those living in Siglap and Bedok,  who do not know how to dance and have always want to learn.

Come learn and dance to country music, latin, blues or pop, you’ll love……..one of the most fun ways to exercise and at the same time make new friends.

This is not strictly a SHC activity, if your friends are interested they are also welcomed to join.

Most of us have at one time or another need some kind of help or services. It would be good to express it here on this post to reach out to fellow members.

I have previously started a a similar post in 2009 and many of you have share with us your experiences. This time round I have a couple from India coming for a two week stay and looking for a room or a small flat to rent for a fee. They are my old client but good friend now.
