We hope to organise a big “Welcome New Members” event on Sun 25 Aug 2013.  The exact venue has not been identified yet.  This is the planning stage.  If you can help to organise in the event planning, please let me know.  Do let me have your name yet.

Please do not leave your email address and telephone numbers on this forum

As a reminder, and to avoid receiving unwanted emails and telephone calls, this forum does not permit email address, telephone numbers and other contact details to be listed.  Club has no control over who sends emails to you and who calls you on the telephone.

For Event Organisers EOs and Event Coordinators ECs, please continue to use this forum to register members who are interested in your activity.

The online fleamart is the only category that allows you to publish your email address.

Should you receive an unwanted email or an unwanted telephone call, please inform the person, or you can leave the complaint here, for others to know.

Gabriella Chua assumes the role of Men’s Night Facilitator wef 5 June 2013

As we get closer to end June 2013, my schedules get tighter.  There will be more announcements of members assuming roles in the Club.  One of my focus, and I am sure is the same focus for many EOs and ECs is to balance the sexes in the Club.  Fortunately, we are not short of ideas from members.  Unfortunately, many members are not willing to volunteer to lead their suggestions, and many expect some one else to do the job.

We are all fully aware that SHC has a high percentage of  lady percentage participating in events.  But, the fact is we also have a big number of men registered within the Club, who actively read the Club’s forum but do not come in to join the activities.

Personally, I believe that the Men’s night will be a successful gathering and will attract more men to the Club.  Discussions are obviously different from the SHC monthly gatherings.  Again, unfortunately, we do not have volunteers to help with the administrative work of organising such events.  Well, as I have mentioned last month, I have decided to free this part of the work to a lady.  I had approached her, and she has accepted the role of SHC Men’s night facilator.  I shall still continue to be the EO of this gathering and she will handle all the facilating work of the Men’s night.  Hopefully, if she is happy with the job, she will stay on for one to two years.

She is Gabriella Chua, whom most of you would have known her from her role with the registration and sitting arrangements of the Taipei night. Basically, our objective is to increase participation at the Men’s night and her tasks are:

  • Organise, post and handles registration of the monthly SHC Men’s night.
  • Maintain the database and participation of all participants.  The database she maintains is confidential, please do not approach her.
  • Send out regular reminders to participants.

This may appear an unusual role.  Please give her the encouragement and support.

SilverHairsClub.com was temporarily shut down yesterday

We had a spate of cyber attacks in recent days.  To prevent any damage to our documents and files, our hosting company has advised a temporary shutdown.  Luckily, the recent upgrade to our system has positioned us to withstand these attacks.  But, we can never be too sure.

Meantime, we will tighten and close some of our access to the outside world.  Members are encouraged to change their passwords regularly.

Apology for any inconvenience.

EOs and ECs can run simple polls (Try this poll)

Many EOs and ECs are cautious about members response to an activity that they plan to organise.  It is true that it can be disappointing to find low or even no response to an idea or event.  Our upgraded software allows us to run simple polls on this website.

  • Sometimes, you may want to know if your event is an accepted idea.
  • Sometimes, you may not be sure which days of the week participating members prefer.
  • If you are not sure, if your event is acceptable, feel free to speak with any of the senior SHC members.  They will be able to guide you as to whether the event will be workable.

So EOs and ECs, this poll service is for you.  Think about it, and if you wish to run a poll, do email me at terences@SilverHairsClub.com.  Note, these are intended to help you, but please keep the polls simple.  You may also write to me for non-event type of polls.

Feedback on our Club software upgrade

Sometimes, you may find your dashboard too cluttered, as you just need to read the comments.

Do look at your screen options.  See arrow below.  You can choose what appears on your screen, especially if you just want to read the comments.

We have the latest version of WordPress.  This software is used by millions of users around the world.  It is also highly recommended by many hosting companies, including Network solutions, which manages global domain names.

For some reasons, some of you may have difficulties finding yourself around the software.  Others may find the new upgrade cumbersome.  Please keep trying.  Where we can find a solution, we definitely will.  No software is perfect.  Any changes we intend to make or improve do cost us time, money and effort.

I have come to be aware that some members complain behind the forum, and feel that we should not have gone ahead with the upgrade, without testing.  These members felt that we should have done complete tests before upgrade.  A lot of tests have been done. Unfortunately, these members do not offer any feedback during the test period.

These members also complain that we do not organise seminars to help members understand how to use the Club’s software.

It is interesting to hear that members complain that the upgrade is a waste of money, and that the costs should have been channelled to other uses.  At this stage, it is important that I highlight that members do not pay for the upgrade.  The upgrade was the result of feedback from members.

SilverHairsClub.com is maintained, hosted and managed at no charge to members.  Such words are not necessary.  To these members, please do not incite other members into using this example as to how badly the Club is being run.  I do not need to highlight who these members are; but you definitely can do a part for the Club.

An example of how to use the SHC LiveChat

Let’s say you like to organise a fishing trip to Tioman on 15 Jan 2013.

First, you can start a Post, indicating all the details of the trip.

Second, you like to invite interested participants to come together, ask questions and speak to the organiser.  Simple on the Post, say that you would like to have a livechat with interested participants, and invite them to go into the SHC LiveChat at a particular date and time.  Everybody logs in at the same time, and you take the lead.

https://silverhairsclub.com/?page_id=6076

This is an example only.  Note: SHC livechat is unmoderated.

Opportunity to be SHC 3rd Video Jockey

Music makes the world go round.  This is definitely true, judging from the music and songs that are played on this website and during our varied events.  I had played the role of the Video Jockey.  Our second VJ was Dolly Lim.  Now, I think it is a good time to have our third VJ.  This is an opportunity to express your music talents and interests.  If you are shy, this may be the role for you.

In this role, the VJ picks songs from the 60s and 70s, and play them on the top left hand corner of the Club’s website.  These music clips can also be from any era, and any language.  Sometimes, the video can be inline with current activities and members’ requests.

Pre-requisites would include:

1.  Familiar with songs from the 50s, 60 and 70s, in our common languages and dialects.

2.  You must believe that that “Music makes the world go round”.

3.  Familiar with the SHC culture, and loves helping fellow members get to know new and more friends.  Have been with the Club for at least two years.  Can interact with the Club membership.

4.  Able to spend 30 mins a week, to select videos and upload this video to our web server.

5.  This role is not difficult; although the person should be comfortable with the computer and internet.

6.  Can be of any sex and and age.

7.  Term: 1 year.  Candidates are required to ensure confidentiality on all membership database.  Those who cannot maintain strict confidence with email information need not apply.

If you like this role, please raise your hand or email to me.  Thank you.

SilverHairsClub – LiveChat, anytime, anyday

Hi fellow SHCians,

From members feedback over the years, some members have expressed that they do not always need to start a new Post, as they may not have a topic for discussion.  There has always been this request to just have a chat.  Others just want to have a simple online chat.  With our recent system upgrade, this is now possible.

Well, we can have it from today.

From today, you can have livechat anytime of the day.  Please respect the views and comments of fellow participants.   To participate:

  1. Simply log onto SilverHairsClub.com.
  2. A LiveChat window will appear on the bottom right of the HomePage. Click that little square box to start.
  3. You may be required to log in,  as this is strictly for members.
  4. In the LiveChat box, there is a faint empty text box, at the bottom.
  5. Chat whatever you like.  This LiveChat is not moderated.
  6. Please make effort to respond to fellow members who respond to your question. Do not leave the question dangling.
  7. As this is our general chatroom, do address the person first eg Hi James, ……
  8. SHC rules of no discussions on politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM.
  9. Contact tel numbers are not permitted.  No personal details.
  10. Most members are usually logged on before 9am, during lunch time, around 5pm and after dinner time.  When you leave the Chatroom, please say “goodbye”; so the other parties are not waiting for your response.
  11. EOs and EOs can pre-invite fellow members to come into the livechat at a certain date and type.  But, there maybe other members chat too.

Have fun.  Give LiveChat a try.  Any feedback appreciated.

Participate in SPH event “Life Matters” on 27 & 28 July 2013 Suntec Hall 404

We receive an invitation to participate in an expo “Life matters”.  I thought of participating by taking a booth, with the objective of increasing our membership.  Often we advertised in the papers, but the costs are high.

This event is specially tailored for seniors in Singapore.

Where and When?
* Venue: Suntec Singapore, Hall 404
* Date: Sat & Sun, 27 & 28 July 2013
* Time: 10am – 8pm
* Feature dates: The Straits Times & Shin Min 26 July (Friday)/ Lianhe Zaobao 27 July (Saturday)

The SPH organiser has costings, starting from $4,588 for one booth.  It’s a standard size booth.

Is there any member/s who would like to share the booth?  We can share out; and it would be fun to have our members to also attend the Expo on a Saturday and Sunday.

SHC March monthly update

Dear fellow SilverHairsClub members,

The lunar New Year festival has just passed. It’s always full of memories.  To some of us, it’s a quiet time of the year.  The Snake year is a good year for you to introduce yourself to other members of the Club, if you have not done so.

SilverHairsClub is the place for you to find new friends, and find other members with similar hobbies and interests.

1.  SilverHairsClub.com: Has been upgraded to include new features eg adding pictures. You can attract members to your events by adding a picture to the Post.

2.  Introduce yourself:  If you have not introduced yourself, write to us.  We would help you to put your introduction in the Club. Include something about yourself, hobbies, interest, work or even family. Tell us your dreams, plans and future ideas. What u like and what you don’t like.   Tell us which schools you studied; you may find a lost class mate.  Even which company you are working for.  We like to know if you are retired or still working part-time or full time.  Even the not-so-good about yourself eg you love to drink yourself drunk, or you love the casino from morning till night.  Someone may like you.  Age not needed as everyone is over 45.

3.  Single Seniors:  The Club has many activities, organised by fellow members.  These activities will continue.  In addition, this year, we are focusing on single seniors.  Some of us may be single or “singles again”.  Members who are legally not married can join “Paper Clips”.  During the 1st 6 months, we will organise group singles activities, specially for “Paper Clips” only.  These activities will have a 50:50 male:female ratio.

*  To join “Paper Clips” as a participant, please email to paper.clips@SilverHairsclub.com.

*  If you like to join the Paper Clips committee, helping to organise singles events, do write to terences@SilverHairsClub.com.

Participate in SilverHairsClub activities. And you will find new friends, SilverHairs friends.  Travel together.  Have tea or potluck sessions together.  Play golf together.

I look forward to hear from you.

SilverHairsClub.com

An informal social club, for Singaporeans, over 45.

Our objective is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends.

(Strictly no politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM)

Updated SilverHairsClub.com with new features wef 20 Feb 2013

New features have been incorporated in the new SilverHairsClub.com. ?However, it is not fully completed yet. ?We had commissioned a company to do our upgrades; and I am pleased with the change. ?You may test it; and if there are any issues, please feedback on this Post.

If a member asks a questions, please feel free to help out the person. ?For those who are familiar with WordPress, and if you have the time, please organise small get togethers to explain its workings. ?I wont respond to your feedback; although I will read all of them.

The major changes are:

  1. Better control over spams.
  2. Photographs can be added. ?Only one picture is allowed per post; more than that, the Post will be on hold or deleted. ?You may put in a picture that is relevant to the Post. ?If you put in a picture of a person or a group, it is your duty to ensure that approval has been given by that person or the group; failing which you will not be allowed to enter the Club.
  3. For portrait pictures, FULL face must be shown. ?Ideal for member introduction.
  4. The Club taboos continue to apply; no discussions on politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling or MLM.
  5. Any advertisements, not under the monthly fleamart Posts, need to be referred to admin@SilverHairsClub.com. ?T&C apply.
  6. Promotional logos, external organisations, company logos or pictures and pictures of non-members are not allowed.

There will be more changes; and they will be announced over the next few months.

We dont use all the features of WordPress. ?But here are some useful Youtube demos. ?You may try others demos.

  • How to write a new Post: ?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IGMLYy16jQ
  • How to insert a picture in the Post: ??http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4WhyhWLpl0

Last call for help – Dementia Project

Dear All, this is my last call for help with my project. I have so far received 3 responses (via personal email) from members who shared their experiences and completion of the questionnaire (not-so-professionally designedemoticon). If you have previous experience or is currently a care-giver, I’d really appreciate your help to complete the questionnaire. Please email me at inez@wsinnovate.net for me to send you a copy of the questionnaire. (We need about 10 responses from each group member to make up the sample size of 50).Thanking you in advance..inez

SilverHairsClub.com will be shut 19,20 and 21 Feb 2013 for system upgrade

Unless there are any last minute changes, SilverHairsClub.com will be shut from 19 Feb 2013 0600hrs to 21 Feb 2013 0600 hrs.  During this period, our club’s website will not be accessible to members and the public.

After the system upgrade, some members who have never accessed the website at any stage, may have to re-apply as a new member.

If you have not accessed the Club before, do make sure you have done so before these dates.  We are expecting a major upgrade, so the old look will no longer be there, when we return.

Will update you as we go along.

SHC EC Event – LCSG 128km Round Island Ride on 05May2013

SHC 128km RIR T-Shirt (Front)SHC 128km RIR T-Shirt (Back)
Our own SHC Cycling T-Shirt is finally here……for the 128km RIR EC Event.

Hi All,

This is an interest check to see if any riders are keen to participate in the LCSG 128km Round Island Ride on 05May2013.

Preliminary Details of this LCSG 128km Round Island Ride can be found here:

http://www.lovecyclingsg.com/t829-5th-may-2013-remembering-paul-lim-128-ride

The previous requisite or requirements and rules for participation in the last year’s LCSG 128km Round Island Ride can be found here:

http://www.lovecyclingsg.com/t722-lcsg-128nri-qualifying-training-rides

Additional Details about last year’s actual LCSG 128km Round Island Ride if interesting for you to read/know can be found here:

http://www.lovecyclingsg.com/t710-22nd-sept-2012-lcsg-night-128-ride-closed

We are planning to send ONE TEAM (or TWO TEAMS if there are more riders) from SHC to participate in this 05May2013 LCSG 128km Round Island Ride.

The following SHCians have graciously agreed to be our trainers, to prepare our SHC Team of Riders for this event. They are:

  1. Andrew Thio (available for training rides on Wednesdays = OK, Mondays and Fridays = May Be)
  2. Douglas Chan (available for training rides on Saturdays = OK, Sundays = PM only)
  3. Loh Yew Kwong (available for training rides on Sundays = OK)

A training schedule planning is in the pipeline but will most probably starts on week 06/52.

As for training routes, we will keep to the same routes/circuit for the first few weeks. We can gradually increase the numbers of loops round the same circuit to simulate the distance of 128km.

At the middle or later part of the training (perhaps in week 12/52), we will go riding on portions of the actual 128km route to get all the SHC participating riders to be familiar with the 128km route.

Near the end of training (perhaps in week 16/52), we will ride the complete actual 128km route as a trial ride (but not for simulating the speed but to get a feel of the complete route in one go at slower pace to test stamina and endurance etc….)

Then we will have a break or cooling-down period (of about two weeks) to prepare ourselves mentally and physically for the D-Day ride on week 19/52 i.e. 05May2013.

Lastly, please note that the LCSG 128km Round Island Rides are mainly on ROADS. So, you must be comfortable riding on roads. There are mandatory rules and safety considerations as well as qualifying rides to be met before you can ride on 05May2013. This is the reason why we have to be trained and have to be committed to the cause and to the SHC team as a whole.

NOTE: If you are keen but not sure if you can make it and would like to give your best shot, please raise your hands here too. Our trainers will put in their best foot forward and if, at the end of the day, you really cannot heck it (dropping out), we are OK (no problems!) with it. Because, at least, you have given it your best shot (and live with no regrets). That’s really good enough rewards for me and for the trainers.

If you have any queries whatsoever, please ask and we will try our best to give you an appropriate answer, pending more or firm details from Mr Tai Woon of LCSG Group.

Looking forward to see you step forward and raise your hands here. Thank you.

Regards,

Ivan Lim

UNIQUE DATE

Today is 12.12.12 – the last of such series of day.month.year in this
century. Knowing none of us will live till 3001 hence i’d like to make a
history in SHC by writing my first post for comments!

But what to talk about? hmmm lets do with:
DO YOU BELIEVE IN REINCARNATION? If so, and if you’ve a choice, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE?

It’s a simple subject to discuss about isn’t it? So if you have never written any comment in SHC post, this is your chance!!
I
think i’ve made at least 12x12x12 friends in SHC over the past 3 years
therefore I hope to see your comments coming too! hence I expect this
thread to be 12m long!!!

PS: 1. you may write in any style you desire -seriously, jokingly, poetically or even in abstract that no one will understand
2. as predicted by Mayan, 21.12.12 will be the end of the world, in case it comes true, i wish/hope/pray all the comments will come before the ‘doom’ day. THANK YOU!!

Some changes to membership criteria and club rules

There will be some changes to our membership criteria and rules.  The changes are minimal, and intended to stress and clarify key points.

1.  No new memberships will be accepted after 31 Dec 2012.  Membership application will reopen in Feb 2013, with new criteria.  We will do another review of members who are not active.

2.  Members who participate in SHC activities but have not entered the Club at least once during the lifetime of the membership, at SilverHairsClub.com may have to contact admin@SilverhairsClub to verify their membership, from time to time.  Members using different registered email addresses would also have their membership cancelled.

3.  The club strictly forbids discussions and invitations on religion, sex, race, politics, direct selling and MLM in the forum as well as in all SHC activities.  Definitions of sex:  No sexual procurement and sexual harassment. Definition of direct selling: No selling of products and services, except during Club’s fleamarts.  No distribution of business cards with the intention of promoting one’s products and services, except during Club’s business gatherings.

MLM and get rich fast programs are strictly forbidden, including invitations to visit websites.

SilverHairsClub will remain flexible and understanding in enforcing the above rules.  If in doubt, members are required to check with admin@SilverHairsClub.com.

4.  Collection of email addresses from the website or at gatherings, with the intention to spam, send promotional materials, invitatons and stories, without the approval of members is not permitted.

Please observe these minor changes.

SHC WordPress software upgrade, now to 2nd week Jan 2013

Hi everybody,

I will be arranging a WordPress software upgrade between now to 2nd week Jan 2013.  Hopefully, by then, members can have the capability to upload pictures on their own.  Currently, we cannot.  There may be some inconveniences here and there, but I hope that at the end of it, we will get to benefit for it all.

Please be informed.
