Volunteers to teach “Selling/Auctions on the internet”

This repeats a Post by Terence on 3 Aug 06. It says "We have a few volunteers to teach and coach this topic.  There might be some of you who would like to offer the same service.   if you are experienced in selling on ebay, Yahoo or other auction sites, and willing to spend some time with other SilverHairs who may be interested, please raise your hands here.  Those with online payment experience also appreciated.
The small group would form among themselves in max 6 people.  The location will be their apartment/house, and they would have their own PC, broadband and digital camera.  Session 2 hours.
So, if you would like to volunteer, raise your hands here.  Hopefully, you will get to meet new friends too with common interests."

So far, 5 members had responded to do or assist in the teaching  with only 11 responded to learn. To all other members who wish to learn, dont feel shy to come forward and put your names here. We dont want you to be left behind in the digital divide.

Making use of our experience and knowledge

Many SilverHairs feel that our knowledge and experience expire when we retire.  Our jobs are replaced by younger people, who have just finished formal education.  With the current environment, many SilverHairs feel that we are no longer employable, and have to take up jobs beneath our experience and knowledge.

Some SilverHairs are lucky.  And they do not have to worry about a job during their SilverHairs years.  From the membership, I see more SilverHairs ladies than men are well prepared for the future.

But, for SilverHairs who need to have a job, what are the options?  Some of us do need a job to maintain our monthly expenses.  For others,  a job helps to pay for our desires to see the world.  And, of course, we have SilverHairs who simply enjoy being actively employed.

Complaining about the non-availability of jobs is not going to help.  It just makes us more unhappy.  Some SilverHairs have already taken up the positive step of taking up something for themselves.   We dont want to sit in the foodcourts from morning to evening.  Nor do we want to walk about the shopping centres from 10 am to 6pm.  Can we come up with some ideas to enjoy our retirement, and yet keep ourselves financially afloat?

Many SilverHairsClub members have expressed that we should do something in this area.  As a group, maybe we can do something.  We have years of experience and knowledge, developed over the years.  Let’s put our ideas here.  And, let’s respect every SilverHairs’s ideas. The more specific you are, the better.  No idea is a bad idea.

I would like to keep this topic alive, over the next two months.  At the end of Sept, we shall try to identify and summarise what we, as a group, can do for ourselves, in terms of jobs, and making use of our experience and knowledge.  I guess success will depend on what we finally do.

All SilverHairs are invited to participate.  And in line with SHC’s direction, let’s observe no religion, politics, sex, race, direct selling and MLM.

2GreenDots – a new project

Hi SilverHairs,

2GreenDots shopping mall is a very new project, prompted as a result of a number of SilverHairs wanting to have a place to offer their products and services.

The SilverHairsClub website is not suitable, as not everybody is interested in offering their products or services.  But the initial discussion groups were initerested, and do have products or services which they like to offer.  Of course, there was the physical shops, but high rents turn many off, not at a time when SilverHairs are looking to stretch the dollar.  Risks were also a concern.

A few sessions on e-auctions and small business groups were conducted by different small groups, in the last few months.  Besides the popular available internet auction sites, some groups felt the need to start an internet shopping mall.  A web specialist was engaged from India, and we now have a working internet Shopping mall.  We call it 2GreenDots Shopping Mall.  This is new, but it has been well tested.  It will also incorporate online payment systems.

For interested SilverHairs, we hope to give him/her a virtual shop.  If a SilverHairsClub member sees this as an opportunity which can bring fun and yet take him/her through the Silverhairs years, a shop name will be set up for him/her.  The idea is to do something meanful, big or small, as one enjoys his/her Silverhairs years.

We do not know if success or failure will hit us.  In the last one year, we had fleamarts, garage sales and small sales advertisement, but all these had failed.  But, from the wide experience of many SilverHairs, we know success or failure of 2GreenDots will depend on many factors.  But, there is no doubt we will give this a go, a strong go.

We target to officially launch 2GreenDots in Jan 2007.

First, we will form a starter group and later a management team with the knowledge and expertise in retail and media experience.

If you have an interest to be part of the starter discussion group, please send me an email with your thoughts.  The starter group will set the ground rules.  We will call a meeting during the 1st week of August.

Loads of chat about what to do during retirement, business, scrabbles, walks and cycling.  Here are the pictures of the evening.  https://silverhairsclub.com/SHC/SHC060209/

Spring cleaning and unwanted things

By Asian living standards, Singapore families do enjoy a better lifestyle than many others around us. Some of us do have the good things in life eg toys for our children, English and Chinese books for the kids, spare radios and TVs, kitchen utensils, used spectacles we longer put on, and unwanted dresses, pants and T shirts.

During the coming spring cleaning, if your family has something unwanted in the store room, and you would like to give them to some other families who would need them, please SMS 9489-4360/email me.  I do carry them to Thailand, and give them to poorer families.  Please do not throw them away.

Thank you.

SHC Nov 2005 gathering

About 40 people attended the SilverHairsClub Nov 30 gathering at ONE Fullerton.  Starting at 6pm, the event saw SilverHairs writing their names on sticky labels, actively introducing themselves to one another, and enjoying the view of the setting sun at the Singapore river mouth.

Event organiser was Richard Kwok and Venue host was Gibson Tan.  Also present were Patrick Yeo (Team leader for 2006 Olympics) and Elsie Ho (Team Leader for 2006 Talentime).  For pictures, please click on silverhairsclub.com/SHC/SHC051130.

The evening topic “What do you plan to do when you reach 55?” started at 7pm.  Although we had a few observers, many SilverHairs shared their meaning of retirement.  Some ideas include travelling, fellowships, nature walks, cooking, potluck, computer classes, making money and collecting CPF.  There were also concerns of no CPF to collect, little money left, no where to go and no friends to talk with.

And, on the whole, we had fun and friendship.  Small groups start to form.  We look forward to the next gathering, likely to be much bigger.

SilverHairsclub Nov 2005 update

Here are some updates for the month of Nov 2005.

* William Chew
* Richard Ng
* Margaret Lee
* Richard Kwok.

The founders are tasked with ensuring that the SilverHairsClub meet its objective of providing a platform for "over 45s" to meet and make new friends.  The club taboos are activities and discussions related to sex, religion, race, politics, direct selling and MLM.

2.  Match makers and event organisers:
*  SHC matchmakers are SilverHairsClub members who have vibrant personalities, keen to meet people and whose main task is to identify members’ interests and introduce them to other members with similar interest.

*  SHC Event organisers are also SilverHairsClub members who have their own special interests eg table tennis, social dancing, keeping fighting fish, chit chatting, having a few drinks together, Karaoke, small group remote travel, playing music together, starting a food stall together and enjoying short overseas stays together.  Their key task involves getting you to join them in their activities and events.

The names will be introduced very soon, on the website.

If you like to be a matchmaker or event organiser, simple drop me an email.

3.  Monthly event:
Currently, we have two places to hold the Nov monthly event.  The next meeting date is Wednesday, Nov 30, starting at 1800 hrs and finishing at 1930 hrs.  The location is at Shenton/Raffles area and will be informed to you next week.  It is near a MRT.  Please let us know if you intend to attend, and we will send you an invitation.

There will be a short topic for the evening.  "What do you plan to do when you reach 55?"  As a guide, the general concept for monthly meetings are inexpensive coffee/tea 50 cts to $1, no liquor and a nice pleasant place, preferably free premise.  The idea is for you to meet other members.  It is our belief that the monthly meeting will generate beneficial activities among members.  Only Registered SHC members can participate.  For both English and Mandarin speaking members.

4. Monthly online live forum:
Some members are not able to attend the monthly event. From the comfort of your home computer, you can log into www.star-conference.com.  A short program will download into your PC.  The session starts at 0900 hrs and ends 1030 hrs.  Sunday, Nov 7.  Overseas members can also join in the online forum.  Textchat is available this year, while the voice chat is disabled for the moment.  Please observe SHC taboos.  Join in, and share your ideas and meet other silverhairs online.  If time or day is not suitable, please let us know.

Give aways and Garage sales

Garage sales are popular exciting  activities.  Definitely, we should keep this to members’ corner.  Can be a worthwhile activity, besides generating some income.  November, December and pre-house cleaning months before major holidays are periods where people throw away unwanted house items.  Unwanted toys, kitchen utencils, electrical items, dresses, furnitures and books are wanted items in other homes.  If you like to organise this column and be a event organiser, please let me know.

Meeting of 17 Oct changed to small group meetings on Oct 26 – 28

The Oct 17 meeting is OFF.  This is because many SilverHairsClub members are working during the planned time.  Also, the date is not suitable to many.  Instead, for those who have responded to the meeting, I have arranged individual or smaller group meetings.  To share with members,

1. It is important I express the thinking and objectives of setting up such a group for Singaporeans over 45 years old.  I am 50, singaporean.  I am aware there are a few retirees clubs in Singapore, Community clubs and small social groups.  Overall the last 10 years, I have noticed a change in the living behaviour and expectations of the SilverHairs group. The financial crisis has changed the Asian market conditions and the thinking of companies in general.  Singapore has changed dramatically and while the over 45s are knowledgeable, experienced and financially capable, they have a tougher life ahead, compared to their predecessors.  There are a lot of debates on this, but I feel strongly these group can have a better life ahead.  Some are pessimistic over the future, and resigned to current lifestyles.

2. I feel the SilverHairs has a great future.  I am an optimistic person.  I believe that the wealth of knowledge and experience would put these SilverHairs into a category of society that can benefit themselves further and provide a more stimulating life.  As a group, SilverHairs are in a stronger position to work together a future for themselves. I am a non believer of a “do nothing” lifestyle for over 45s and retirees.  As someone who has seen colleaques retiring and then fading into a aimless lifestyle,  I see mentally sad souls in many of this age group.  But, of course, there are also contented ones. And, we have some very optimistic individuals among us.

3. The objective of the SilverHairsClub is clear.  It will provide a platform for over 45s to meet and make new friends.  Different individuals have different desires and interest.  They could just be looking for regular chit chats, some are looking for jobs, some looking to find small business partners and some just looking for common hobbies and travel companions. So far, we have a number of match makers, event organisers and membership promoters.  Most of the organising and groupings of interest will be managed by these groups of key people.  But, SHC will keep growing its membership so that the newer and different interest groups can have continued or even changing interests.

There would be monthly meets or activities, but these will be general activities – social, some makan and opportunities to exchange thoughts. At this level, the gatherings are intended to be large.

As the group gets bigger, we will add a new group of key people to generate corporate interest.  But this will be done sometime next year.  The idea is to grow the group, a thousand is the target. And, I believe it can get bigger.

4.  The advantage of this group is the fast communication.   All SilverHairs use email.  I see many as not net savvy though.  I plan to add SMS very soon.  We also  have the services of Ms Pranita, who will manage the database.  She is based in India.

For cost reasons, we avoid the use of printed newsletters and phone calls..

5. Language-wise, I see strong English skills among the group.  But as my Chinese is not strong, I am looking for strong Chinese skills supporters.

6. For a physical club presence, I am not supporting it at this stage, as it will unnecessarily strain the growing organisation, cost wise.

But, a regular place is good, and I am still exploring.

7. Club registration. Once the team is formed, we should register the club.  The club would not support sex, religious, racial, direct sales/MLM and political activities.

Some of the agenda, topics of discussion with individual and smaller groups would include:
1. Areas of cooperation and support.
2. Activities suited to the group – keeping members young at heart.  Special focus on outdoor activities.
3. Use of suggested places for large meetings.
4. Getting to know one another.

Promoting the club (externally)

The Silverhairsclub comprises people who are over 45 years, experienced after having worked a good number of years, have valuable skills and physically/financial active.  There are external organisations who would like to build a relationship with SilverHairsClub, and this is the category.

Starting from 2006, we would like to promote the SilverHairsClub with external organisations.  This will substantially increase the SilverHairsClub membership.

Thank you for your interest

Dear SilverHairs,

We have received excellent responses from the advertisements to join the SilverHairsClub.

Many have responded to be match-makers, event organisers and membership promoters.  We are still registering and breaking down the different interest groups with the silverhairs group.  I was hoping to get this done by mid Sept, but the work has been overwhelming.  Please email us your interests asap. Our Ms Pranita shall be sending out a short survey soon.

Some activities have already been lined up and you can see them under “events” in silverhairsclub.com.

1.  For Singapore, an informal get-together is planned for Mon, Oct 17, starting 1700 hrs and end 1830 hrs.
The place has not been decided. If you have a place, preferably within MRT reach, please let me know.  It is a casual event.

2. Many of you have requested for an online registration and bulletin board.  I am looking at it. If you are good in this area and can contribute this application, do let me know too.

We have varied interests, and they range from hobbies to simple companionship travelling to small business set.  Hope this will enable individuals to group together, with the assistances of the match-makers.

3. SilverHairsClub Sunday meeting.  For the internet savvy ones, silverhairsclub will have an online conference, once a month for members to chat with one another. Date/time: 1st Sunday of each month from 0900 am to 1000 am. Details in silverhairsclub.com.  If you have like to make a presentation, please email me.  Strictly, no topics on sex, religion, politics, direct selling and MLM.

The SilverHairsClub is intended as a social platform to meet new and make more friends.  The objective is simple, and we aim to find meaningful activities among the group as we enter new phases of our lives.

Background:
Like many of us, we share concerns about what our lives will be like when we retire.  We have friends who have retired and when they retire, they forgot about their good old friends, and spend the rest of their life on golf, gardening, fishes, taichi and grand children. Then, there are others who live a private life, going to the kopitiam every morning and evening.

For many people, reaching silverhairs have different meaning to different people. Some have exciting plans, while for some, they cannot wait to enjoy the thought of a quiet retirement.  And, for some, the thought of not working can also be frightening, what do we do in the morning when we wake up.

Well, I am one of them.  I am 50 yrs.  I have advertised in the papers to find friends who would like to meet new or more friends.  People who would meet and talk about life with silverhairs.  Of course, some are already in their silverhairs.

I am determined to form a sucessful social group for SilverHairs. This is not a platform for selling products and services.  But, a group and a place where we can meet one another, talk and discuss plans for themselves and how we can carry on to a meaningful silverhairs stage of their lives.  There is life during silverhairs.

To keep cost down, all communications will be via email.

The key to make this group a success is to bring in other friends.  And if you like to contribute in activities, please let me know.

I shall continue to catch up with those who have offered to be match-makers, event organisers and member promoters.

Please feel free to write direct to me.
