Hello SHCians

Haven’t written quite a while and am back in Perth for the cool weather.

In case anyone is coming to Perth, I’ll be travelling down southwest WA to Busseltong and Balingup with 3  friends. We 4 ladies are booked to stay in a farm cottage, hoping to pick the last few apples and going to some fruit wineries etc. This is followed then by a spot of fisihing in Busseleton where 1 of the friends live.

From reading the travel news I can see there are some keen travellers off to other places. Hope to join in some of the tours organised by you some of you.

Monthly Leisure Cycling – 16 April 2011 (Sat)

Venue :  East Coast Parkway

Meeting place : ECP McDonald (inside)

Programme :  

  • Meet @ 4.00 pm
  • Move to Bicycle Rental Kiosk @ 4.30 pm
  • 1st stop – Bedok Jetty
  • 2nd stop – NSRCC
  • Cycle back to Rental Kiosk hopefully via a different route – waterfront scenic route

Those who do not wish to cycle further to NSRCC, feel free to stop at Bedok Jetty and/or venture around but try to meet us back at the Rental Kiosk.  We should return the bike by 6.30 pm.

Monthly Cycling to go on?

Hi Cycling Buddies

Our cycling leader, Yew Kwong is very preoccupied these days and Jade had MIA due to family obligations.  Our 2nd in command, Douglas cannot commit to a monthly schedule but he does not wish to see the monthly cycling die a natural death due to poor response. 

Hence, Ah Nee and I have been tasked with the duty to carry on.  However, sometime, some things might better off be done away with, rather than to continue.  We would like to seek your opinion or vote as to whether we should continue with this monthly cycling activity.  But first, here are some info / history for your consideration.  Cycling activity was first started in March 2006 led by Charles Wee.  There were only 4 of us : Charles, Yew Kwong, Jade & me.

2nd cycling in April 2006 : There were still only 4 of us – Charles, Yew Kwong, Andrew Yeung and me.

3rd cycling in May 2006 : Yew Kwong took over the leading role from Charles.  There were 7 of us – Yew Kwong, Andrew, Jade, Pauline and me + 2 of my friends who were non SHCian.  Pauline was the one who shared with us her account no. with the rental bicycle kiosk which allow us to pay $4 for 1 hour and get 1 hour free and later, plus a bottle of mineral water.  (Today, the standard rate is $5 for 2 hrs – no water and no special privileges.)

4th cycling in June 2006 : There were – Yew Kwong, Andrew, Jade, Pauline and me + 2 of my friends (1 of whom became SHC member much later, guess who?)  Subsequent monthly cycling see changes in people combinations but the number grew.

The number of participants peak in Feb 2009 with 41 (all) SHC members and then the number starts to dwindle.  Reasons I can think of, for the decline :

1.       Non homogenous group – there are advance riders who branched off into “passion riders” doing long distance and in “rough / difficult” terrains including off-shore cycling.  They are into “challenging rides” as oppose to our leisure kind of cycling.

2.       Recent cycling events evolved from leisure cycling as a group, into 2 factions.  The long-distance cyclists and the mid-range cyclists.  This split encourages non-cohesion as a group as the 2 groups did not start nor end within the same time frame.  We didn’t even meet for a meal together at the end of the ride which used to be the norm.

3.       Since Jade no longer involved, beginners have no one to teach them.

4.       Constraint – we are restricted to limited localities due to rental bike facilities available.

5.       Location – as it is always the same locality, the novelty wears off and participants lose interest after a few tries.

6.       Venue – not easily accessible for non drivers.

Taboos within SHC club and forum

I like to remind everyone of the club taboos. They are “No discussions on politics, sex, race, religion”. Add to these, the club does not permit direct selling as well as MLM activities.

When a member joins SilverHairsClub, he:she agrees to abide by these taboos. From time to time, some members have chosen to flirt with these taboos on the club’s forum. Some members have even questioned why, using freedom of speech and democracy.

As founder, I had decided that these issues can be discussed on other platforms, many of them freely available on the internet and on other social media platforms too. SilverHairsClub was not created for discussion on politics, race and religion.

As the elections are coming, there are increased write-up on political issues. I take this breach very seriously.

As long as forum participants stay outside the taboos, you can be sure you have the club’s support. Members who persistently failed to abide by this rule will have their membership taken off.

I hope I don’t sound so harsh, but as you may know, fairy godmother can be temperamental too.

A Tribute to Robert Quek

Latest Update : Robert’s Wake is held at Mount Vernon Sanctuary, Purity Hall.  Was told that funeral will be on this Friday, 8 Apr 2011 – Details will be updated later… Dolly

Another SHC member, Robert Quek had left us today (Apr 4, 2011) – He was admitted on April 1 to Tan Tock Seng Hosptial due to massive stroke which subsequently went into coma.  Sad to be told by his family members that his heart had stopped and passed on with  both Kristy and son by his side.  Many friends were beside him. – A group of us were there to pay him visit before this and we were all praying hard that he is able to pull thru’ – I supposed Robert felt that this is best that he wanted himself to be.

Both Robert and Kristy had joined SHC in Y2007.  He was a good natured and humble man which I am sure that they were well liked by many other members.  He was very active in events’ planning for many SHC members.  I can still remembered that he used to arrange for  free concerts and movies at either Esplanade or NUS, Weekly MacRitchie walks, Dinner & Live Band at Changi Saiing Club, Monthly makan and social get together, Special wak to the Tree-top and Observation Tower, many Self Development seminars, etc etc

He was also a very sporting member which I can remembered very well during our 2nd SHC D&D – he was impersonating a Japanese dancer which brought us a lots of laughters and fond memories.

Sympathy and condolences to both Kristy and son and may we prayed for them to be strong to face life ahead.

As this point of time, I do not have any other more updated details to be given here.. Once they are available, I will update accordingly.

Monthly walk – Pulau Ubin, Chek Jawa


Date: 09 April 2011 (Saturday)

Getting to Changi Village Bus Interchange :  Buses svc nos. 2, 29, 59, 109.
e.g. from Tanah Merah MRT station, alight and board Bus Svc No. 2;
from Tampines MRT, board Bus Svc No. 29;
Pasir Ris MRT, Bus Svc No. 109.

Assemble, mark attendance:  9:15am at Ground level of Changi Point Ferry Terminal “CPFT” which

overlooks the sea (walking distance from Changi Village Food Centre).

Depart from CPFT :  9.30AM SHARP 
We will walk down to the basement to take a bumboat ride. The ride takes about 10 minutes
at  S$2.50 per person/per trip.  There are no scheduled departure times to and from Ubin,
as bumboats set off only when there are 12 passengers.

Lunch: approx at 1 p.m. at a local Chinese restaurant.  It serves individual zhi char dishes
or ala carte seafood orders.  Seating capacity is limited; we need to book tables for all.   
          
*****Commute by bus, do allow sufficient travel and waiting time.  If any member wish to
leave early for other appointment, appreciate U keep either Eos informed.

Our walk will take us all the way to Chek Jawa; Walking under the swaying coconut palms, lush
greenery, birds, through “country’ roads where the air is fresh.
Chek Jawa one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems!
Apparently, on 9April, in the morning the tide is low, hopefully it is low enough and unveils
the marine life there.

Our walk ends once we are back to Ubin town centre.
Do not leave Ubin without feasting on some seafood which is fresh and prices are reasonable.

When you have rested, feasted and recharged, you may go to explore the nearby Sensory Trail –
a small garden with fruit trees, spices and herbs for cooking, applants used in traditional
medicine and native plants of the mangrove forest.

NOTE
Bring poncho, hat, insect repellent, binocular and camera.  Country roads might be slippery,
shoes or track shoes are strongly recommended.  No slippers/sandals as they are also an
open invitation to insects/mosquitoes.

1.  Walk single file when road is narrow, Always keep to the left side of the road. Do not
     wander off or lag behind, stay with the group!
2.  Bring your own drinking water.  Water from public toilets and wells is not suitable for
     drinking or bathing. As lunch might be late for some, bring snacks but no littering.
3.  Avoid feeding, touching, harassing or capturing any wild animal.
4.  Hornets and wild bees are potentially dangerous when disturbed – stay clear of any nest
     or hive and report its location to the National Parks Board immediately.
5.  Shelters are few and small.  During our trail, toilets are found at Ubin Town and Chek Jawa.
6.  Spray insect repellant esp if mosquitoes loves your blood!

Another fairy tale story in our time

Many of us may have remembered the grand wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana.  I was studying in London at that time, and was so excited to be able to be able to witness such a grand affair as a student.  Hundreds of thousands of tourists thronged London just to catch a glimpse of the royal couple.  However, Princess Diana is now gone; and the rest is just memory and history.

Another fairy tale is now in the making; and that’s the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.  He is a soldier and the next in line to the throne.  She is pretty, clever and educated.  I just love fairy tales.

Where were you when Prince Charles and Lady Diana were married?  And where will you be when Prince William and Kate tie the knot?  In London?

I had decided to keep to the same date (14 April) as proposed by Terence earlier for April gathering and it would be seating/standing kind of arrangement at the MPH cafe.   Details as follows:

Food and beverages can be purchased from the cafe.  Kindly note that no outside food is allowed at the cafe and sincerely hope that all members will abide by this regulation.

Pls use your SHC name tag if you are given 1 before.  If you don’t have 1, it’s ok – a sticky label will made for you.  This gathering is strictly for SHC members and registration is compulsory as we do not welcome any gate crashers for this meeting due to the limited capacity at the cafe.  Kind cooperation towards would be much appreciated.

Man’s night, Tue Apr 12, 2011

It’s been a long time since we had a Man’s night.  Guys, let’s have a session together.  For a start, I have to pick this date, so my apologies to those who would like to come but cannot make this date.  Please feel free to suggest a  place, preferably near a MRT station.  Happy hours would be great.

  • Time:  6.30 pm to 9pm.
  • Place:  No place in mind yet; but a place with good standing room, and where we can stand and buy a drink of our choice.
  • Dinner:  Let’s not have dinner in mind, so have a snack or meal before coming.  Or buy whatever is available at the venue.

Dolly Lim takes over the role of Club Manager wef 1 Apr 2011

Dolly has accepted the role of Club Manager, and will continue so until Jan 2012.

The key role is to manage the social activities of SHC; with a focus on the SHC monthly gatherings.  Members with an interest to run any monthly gathering, should discuss directly with Dolly.

As always, Event Organisers and Event Cordinators should continue to feel free to organise activities of their choice and interest.  All subject to club rules.

For issues regarding your userid and user password to the SilverHairsClub.com, please refer directly to Yew Kwong, SHC website administrator.  Club membership approval will continue to be handled by me.

SilverHairsClub does not have a management committee.  For any event, the person responsible for the activity will be the EO or the Event Cordinator.  This system has worked well, and we will continue so for the future.

Round Table – April 2011

After having a few sessions of the SHC Round Table I noticed that many are interested in business but have no prior experience. Thus our own Francis Mangalam has come to the rescue. Francis has been in the corporate world for the past 20 years with his own company providing accounting, secretarial, corporate taxation, financial reports compilation filing with Government agencies and other related matters.

He is more than happy to share his experience of getting started in business e.g what kind of business structure, sole-proprietorship, partnership or limited company, the pros and cons of each, liablilities of partners and directors etc. In short, the nuts and bolts of business.

Do come to this session of Round Table to know more. It will not be a formal talk but a casual discussion in the manner of the previous Round Tables. Of course, SHCian already in business are welcomed too, to contribute and to network.

Hit by tragedies beyound our control

Last Friday, Japan was hit by a big earthquake, a huge Tsunami and now a nuclear crisis.  This must be the worst disaster, in our lives.  Thousands of lives were lost; and the tasks ahead are mammoth.  We have all read about this tragedy in the papers, the internet and the television.  How fragile is life.  How unexpected can tragedy escalate to what it is now.  And, to our friends, our families, and to the people we do not know.

We have been around for the last 45 years.  What a shock!  Feel free to express your thoughts and your feelings.

Attend a dating course

There is a WSQ course "Establishig and Managing a Dating business, coming up on 4 April 2011.  I had attended the course, a year ago, and I think it has been useful.  For Singapore, dating meets a national objective, especially for young people with busy work schedule and forgetting to start a family.  For singles SilverHairs, dating is the beginning of a new life.  If you are interested to develop dating as a service business, you may want to consider attending this course.

The course costs $321, and SilverHairsClub will subsidize 50%, if you complete 100% attendance, over 3 days.  The advertisement is published in Today’s STPage B18.

Culturally chauvinistic male(CCM); Liberated Alpha female(LAF

 Dear friends

 A chance remark recently by a fellow member whilst we were socialising, prompted me to comment on the

above.

 The first Iconic CCM I came across was in the early 70s when the mahjong host(a friend’s friend) wife literally had to cater to the four players’ needs – preparing the table, serving refreshments and after we stopped by 5pm for happy-hour drinks, she had to walked up and down from the third level as the elevator stopped at the 5th level(Stirling Rd, Queenstown flats) to cross the road and buy Or-luak, chai-tow-kuay and rojak and two bottles of stout and mind you she was mid-way pregnant with her first child.

 After serving us the food as well as getting the utensils, she had to wiped off the iced-water stains spilt earlier by her husband and minutes later to mop off some chilli sauce carelessly spilt by yours truly.  The host had discouraged a friend to render assistance with the remark "not to worry…..leave it to her…….

woman’s job".

 My take is up to the mmid-70s, a woman when admitting she had a husband which has turned out to be below par, would console herself with the thought "Well, its just my hard luck, but at least I have a family and children.  Just look at Ah Choo, approaching 30 like me, in fact some months older than me, and still with no prospect in sight"  But two decades later, this below-par husband would have been chucked off,

"Good riddance!"

Increased intellectuality and economic independence means the female’s attitude and mannerism now do intimidate some "lacklustre" males.  Parental influence to some extent navigate one’s selection of absolute pragmatism.  "He smokes, you smoke……..who is going to stop smoking if you want to have a baby next time"   "Son, I don’t think you can afford her, she’s a single child you know, chauffered throughout from young"  "Your wife will still be working after marriage…..so, no need to serve you coffee, even once in awhile?"  "Yes, you’re lucky, he’s well-off, but see that his mother in future don’t "lord" over you, cause rich women tend to ‘knuah suay simpu boh lew’.   These were comments I overheard at my family’s clan- gatherings through the years.  Perhaps, Peranakans tend to be more concerned over their childrens’ marriage selections.

 My take is unless one upholds the thought that "man is meant for procreation" then pragmatism will prevail.

Small Tote Bag from Jeans

Hi 

I will be giving one lesson teaching demo/sewng a lovely sweet tote Bag (view video attached) from old Jeans.

This will be a Hand-on Project , I will demonstrating the very basic step to sew a bag. Once u know the basic step  , u will be able to create any bag of your own design with your old Jeans.

No sewing machine  is require for this simple tote bag , as far as u can thread/hold a needle and sew a simple button , u will be able to handle this small project.

Come down and have some fun together  and at the same time we can have "Hi-Tea" after the session.

Silverhairs Club Monthly Meeting – March 25 (Friday)

This meeting is aborted!

As Terence suggested, we will have a meeting where there is no chairs nor tables. This will give us more opportunity to move around and ensure that nobody is left out. Dun forget your name tags.

There will be an agenda, a time slot of one hour at 7.00pm-8.00pm will be open for member to share about how monthly meetings is to be conducted and what we hope to see happening in the Club.

Finger foods with free flow of coffee and tea will be provided. Bring your own liquor whether vodka or whisky or wine. Calling Bartender Ivan, come and concoct various drinks for us. There are two overheads projectors for us to use.

Venue: Ez4u Dance Studio, 169C Selegie Rd

Time: 5.00-9.00pm. Karoeke only start from 8.00pm-11.00pm

Cost: $10.00 per head to defray cost of rent and free karoeke.

Free Parking at URA carpark  next to former Rex cinema.

SilverHairsClub monthly gathering – Thurs Apr 14, 2011

For April, I have set a date for Thurs, Apr 14, 2011, time late afternoon to evening.  Please put this date in your diary.

From feedback, Hans Cafe at Upp Pickering seems to be a good location and well received.  But, for this gathering, the hope is to do something slightly different.  in case, you are worried, the change will be very slight.  Well, maybe it will all be standing room, within an open area.  No dinner, but maybe some finger food.  Soft drinks, wine, if we can afford it.

The venue should not be a function room; function rooms are boring.  We cannot afford to have chairs or tables.  Maybe some dividers to demarcate a square, with a small entrance for us to squeeze in. Hmm, we will have a small registration team.  Maybe we have a mic to introduce the event.  Gosh, no singing, karoke and no dancing and no games.

The objective again is not to put our butts on the chairs or sofas.  Everybody walks around.  If you dont like somebody, you can just say you are going to the rest room.  The SHC name tag is compulsory.  If you are shy, just say "Hi, my name is Timothy Liu.  And what’s yours?".  If you are the "Everybody knows me" type, keep smiling.

Dress code:  Aiyah, no slippers, and remember "Just look good and feel good".

Strictly for registered SilverHairsClub members only.  No discussions on politics, sex, race, religion, direct selling and MLM.

And the best part of this event is we haven’t found a place, near the MRT.  And what it will cost us.  Have fun.  And, you are invited to to give your thoughts, ideas and suggestions on how to hold such an event.  Oops, I thought I should be the EO for once.  If you like to help me, please let me know.

A partner as we journey through our SilverHairs years

Today’s Straits Times carries a few articles which are very close to my heart.  They are articles on "Looking for Mr Right", "Single in Singapore", "Jumping in early" and ways to meet people.  I have always believed that having a partner and sharing our lives together, till death do us part is just as desired as the 5C’s or 6c’s that some of us search for all our lives.

I am also a believer that the older we are, especially when we are over 45, having a partner to share our joy, our sadness, our activities and hobbies, and our quiet moments, having someone to talk to, hug and kiss, and cry can be a nice experience.  Even though, these experiences may be the second or third time.

Although, in the articles, the focus was on the under 22s, the 29s and the early 30s, the objective is still the same for all ages; finding someone to be together for the rest of our lives.  There will always be some among us that will always challenge "why the need to", because they have good money, have got used to being single and enjoying their lives or they may have been pained at some stage.  But let’s not discourage the friends around us who may have been lonely for many years.  Living through our SilverHairs years can be lonely and painful.  We just have to find ways to overcome the journey ahead.

So, again, let’s help our single friends around us.  Dont, just go out alone with other singles.  Bring your friends along, introduce them and make that little effort.  Be positive, be encouraging and be active.  Be active and you will be seen.

March 2011 Walk – Sengkang Riverside PCN

Day / Date : Saturday, 12 March 2011

Time : 4.00 pm – 6.00 pm

Venue : Sengkang Riverside PCN

The PCN runs parallel to part of Punggol River. We will start off near Yio Chu Kang Road / Lorong Buangkok and end at the Sengkang Riverside Park. The walk will take us along the backyard of the only surviving kampong (Kampong Buangkok) in mainland Singapore and on to the new floating bridge outside Anchorvale Community Club. The entire walk is 2.5 km.

Please assemble at 4 pm outside Serangoon Central MRT Exit G, just next to the newest shopping mall Nex (Note: Exit G is near the control station of Circle Line. If you are coming from the North-East Line, cross over to the Circle Line within the Serangoon MRT Interchange).  

We will take bus service 70 and alight at the bus stop outside St Vincnet De Paul Church along Yio Chu Kang Road. After the walk, we can take the LRT from Farmway LRT Station to Compass Point shopping mall for dinner.  

Come join the walk and explore the North-East!!!

A Visit to St Joseph Home – Volunteers needed

I hope that some of pioneer members remembered that back in Y2009 on May 1, SHC did organized an charity activity at St Joseph Home.  This year, we hope to organize another entertaining event for these folks staying there to give smiles on their faces.

As Nelly is currently out on a mission trip and will not be back in 2weeks’ time, I am putting up this post on her behalf. 

Date of Visit: 8th May 2011 (Sunday). Time: 9.45am to 12.30pm.

Location: St. Joseph’s Home. 921, Jurong Rd, S’pore 649694. Tel: 62680482. Fax: 62684787.  From Boon Lay Interchange, take Bus 157 and alight 4 bus-stops away at back gate. Those going by car are requested to car-pool due to shortage of parking space; about 8 lots only.

It is always a blessing in helping the less fortunate in society.

At this moment, there is nothing more than getting the SHCians to entertain these Residents of St Joseph’s Home with our karaoke singing and/or any kind of performances are also welcome to share with the joy with these Senior on that day.

Like-minded SHCians can come forward to volunteer their time as they had already got a sponsor for the good although thru’ self-collection.  Not sure if extra transport will be needed.

Chit chat with these seniors, helping in serving the food, feeding them for those less mobile and entertaining them with songs and others…

Hi-Cycling enthusiasts

Meet at rear of McDonald Restaurant, Marina Cove (former East Coast Recreation Park).

Rented bicycles are abundantly available at reasonable rates.
Rental Cost is between $5-$6 .

Activity will not be cancelled even if it rains but will be brought indoor and turn it into chitchat session.
Rain or shine, we will be there.

Our Usual Program –
4.00pm. : Gather for chitchatting inside aircon McDonald..
4.30 pm. : Proceed to bike rental kiosk.
4.30-6.30 pm. : Cycle to NSRCC or to Changi Ferry Terminal..
6.30pm : All cyclists to return bikes and go for dinner at nearby food joints.

Feb 2011 Monthly gathering

Hi, all SHC members,

Hope everyone had a memorable CNY, and hope everyone enjoyed huat, huat, huat  in different ways! Perhaps you had a chance to meet up with family/friends whom you have not met in a while, or maybe you collected some winnings at mahjong, 4D, etc. Or maybe you gained a kg or 2 from all that delicious CNY goodies.  Wishing everyone continue to huat ah! 

It’s time for all SHC members to meet up at the old, familiar place :

Do use your SHC name tag if you have one.  If you don’t have one, it’s ok – a sticky label will be made for you.  If you know of any quiet or shy SHC member, do inform him/her and invite him/her to February monthly gathering.  Maybe they have no computer access, or maybe they do not know the easiest way to get to Han’s Café.  Let’s all share funtimes with them too.

One Valentine kiss please

Each year, some of us may have difficulties getting our children to sit down for a reunion dinner or even to visit family members in the evening because it’s Valentine Day.  They have their own itinery; so it’s only right they go out fort heir own dinners.

I remembered for a couple of years, I was a similar problem to my parents.  These old folks just didn’t know what’s Valentine Day.  So, as the years passed, the event became more meaningful.  We planned elaborate dinners, maybe with steak and wine.  Then, we brought along the misletoe.   The years continued to pass, and maybe we got married, or we just find another mate.

For many of us still, Valentine Day is still meaningful.  Our kids may give us roses, "Ma, I love you.  Thank you for the many years, you looked after us."  Once in a while, not every year though, I would sneak a few stalk of roses to that sweet young girl in my friend’s office.  If she smiles back, that’s enough.  Cannot take it too far.  A little impulse is good.  Why not, after all we are human.  But, then, the brake should work.

Coming to over 45, I guess we become wiser.  We see our children or grand children enjoy their Valentine Day.  We sent roses to everybody in the office.  No discrimmination.  We think about our spouses, and say, "Let’s go out for dinner".  Maybe, gather a group of friends, with candle light below the table, have a couple of wine. 

Valentine Day is meaningful.  Dont let the day pass without giving it some thought.  Share with us, what are you doing for Valentine Day.  It only comes once a year.  Dont be shy.
