Making our Chinese educated members more comfortable at SHC

For a long time, and rather often, many members and some new members have asked me if SHC is an English-speaking club.  The fact is we have no intention to speak, write and communicate in English only.  I guess the big problem is because I am only conversant in English; and this too, I am not good sometimes.  We allow all kinds of languages and dialects in this club, this includes Sam’s Hokkien English, Malay, Tamil and Chinese Mandarin from time to time.  We try not to have too strict on languages and dialects.

However, Singapore has a large Mandarin speaking population, and SHC should encourage this into the Club. We allow Chinese languages on this forum.  We have also an online Chinese to English translation service on this forum.

What I like to open to members is this.  Can we have one or two members, who are fluent in Mandarin, can write and type in Chinese, and also in English to write and communicate with our Chinese educated members on this forum.  An important task is for you to come in when the English is too complicated, and you can translate and write in Chinese to explain and clarify.  From time to time, you can initiate topics in Mandarin too. You become our official Mandarin communicator.

If you can volunteer to do so, I see this as an important contribution to the club.  Please feel free to raise your hand.

Can Singapore live without maids? Is this possible?

Today, Singapore has thousands of maids.  They are in the homes, looking after babies, sick and disabled elderlies, and families who compare the financial benefits and see it is cheaper to have a maid than not working.  With a maid, these families see they would benefit from a better standard of living, instead of wasting their lives doing washing, cooking and cleaning the house.  So nice to come home from work, and into a clean house.

It’s a headache to look after babies and young children.  They scream and yell, throw the toys around the house, scribble pencil drawings on the walls, and spill milk and chocolate ice cream on the sofas.  Babies wake up in the middle of the night, cry and cry until they get picked up and have their stomachs filled. Which of the parents would wake up; or it will be the maid who has to do so.

After a whole day of hard work, can one really come home and cook for our elderly parents.  Then, bathe them, put them in front of the TV, chat with them, and later put them to bed.  So, nice to have a maid. They get to endure all the calls and screams from our parents who may have dementia and temperamental.

What if one day, the country says, "No maids".  After all, in many countries, there are no maids at all.  These are very developed countries.  Elderly folks stay in the homes, with plenty of friends around.  Babies, why cant women stay at home and look after the kids.  If the wives are not doing it, then the men can.  Or put the kids in a childcare centre, then go to work. Then, rush home after work, and pick them up.

Food, cook them one week in advance, freeze them and then go for the microwave.  Rice, it does not take a long time.  Soup, fix the slow cooker.  Today, home tasks can be productive, there is this round little robot, that can vacuum a 5 room flat within two hours.

Do you have a maid at home?  Can you do without a maid?  Why do we need to have maids and have all the maids problems.

Let’s have a good chat on this topic.  Let’s respect the opinions of other members.  Feel free to have a say.

SilverHairsClub – Part time work for retirees

Dear SHCians,

This month’s newsletter aims to focus at what SilverHairsClub can do for retirees or members who have given up a full-time job.  If you are a retiree or have given up full time work, I look forward to hear from you.  At 45+, many retirees have acquired years of skills, knowledge and experience.  Retirees have seen the world, saw their children growing up, going through school and seeing them having their own career and families.  As retirees, many of us also want to spend some time doing the things we have always wanted to do.

If you are one of the lucky Retirees or SHC members who may not need to have a part-time job, I would encourage you to help our fellow members find paid work, so that we can pass through our lives with fun, cheer and some comfort, without suffering from loneliness and an expensive society.

For different reasons, some of us want to continue working part-time; and may find searching for a suitable job difficult.  We want to stay in touch with the outside world.  If you wish to do something meaningful and like to find a part-time job, I am hoping we can do so collectively as a Club.  Besides fun and social activities, SHC can present itself as a Club with experienced seniors.  Over the years, various job ideas have cropped up, and I think it is about time, we re-try looking at this area of part-time work for Seniors.

Some of them are:

1. Care for the elderlies in their homes
2. Providing phone receptionist services from our homes.
3. Running errands for families
4. Confinement and nanny services for young families.
5. Stand in for various positions in companies when the full time staff is on sick leave or long vacation.

The list can go on, and as to how we will proceed, we really have to depend on your interest.  Simply fill the details below and email this information to me at terences@SilverHairsClub.com.

1. Name:
2. Address (which area in Singapore):
3. Mobile tel:
4. What kind of part-time work are you looking for? (10 lines) :
5. When are you available? eg which days of the week and what are the times? :
6. What is your expected compensation? eg $ xx per hour or per day or per month :

For members who are working in organisations, and have a need for part-time staff, please let me know the company name, the contact person, tel, email address and job type.  I am sure many retirees will benefit from your recommendation and effort.  Ideas and suggestions welcome.

With effect from 1 July 2012, job postings will not be allowed on this forum by individual members.  However, corporate members can continue to do so.

Thank you for your time.

Part-time work opportunities for retirees – Nannies

Under the Blue Helmet project, we discussed opportunities for SilverHairs to remain active, make use of their skills and experience, stay in contact with the world and be able to be compensated for the part-time work.  To be honest, we have not been successful, due to companies not accepting over 45s in their payroll.

Eldersitters was identified as one area to go into, whereby fit and healthy seniors offer companionship services to elderlies in their homes.  We have since identified a pool of eldersitters, and will be starting our advertising programs soon.

At yesterday’s SHC monthly gathering, a couple of ladies discussed the possibility of offering nanny services or confinement care ladies during the weeks before and the one/two months after delivery to young couples who need help during an important time of their lives.  I thought this is a wonderful suggestion, and would like to pick this idea up.  However, I am not a woman, so I dont know what is involved and required.  My wife had the help of her sister, but what about the many young families who may be searching around for a confinement lady.

I am sure many SilverHairs ladies retired have experience in this area of birth and looking after newly born babies.  Please share your thoughts on this project.  If it makes sense, we can offer this as a service to young families in Singapore.

And, if you like to be a confinement lady or nanny, please contact terences@SilverHairsClub.com.  If you can state some of your experiences, this would be great.

On the same note, if you are looking for a confinement lady or nanny for your married children, please do contact me too at the same email.

Under this project, if we go ahead, this will be paid services.  If you like to manage this service, do let me know.  This project will be directed to SilverHairs Enterprise PL.

A “Family Day” in the thinking, before end 2012

Ever since the Club started, we have always maintained that all its activities can only be attended by members, and that attendees must be 45 and over.  This rule will continue to be adopted.

However, many SHC members are still young, and may have young children or grandchildren to look after. There are also cases where their brothers and sisters are still young, below 45.  And, of course, there are the grandfathers or grandmothers who are not able to participate in SHC; but from time to time, may want to enjoy a family day, with other grandparents.

The objective of the Family Day is to provide an occasion and place whereby family members get to meet other family members over a 2D1N or 3D2N affair.

  1. First, as a rule, we will continue to maintain the over 45 age and events can only be attended by registered members.
  2. Second, after some feedback from senior members, I am thinking that we can have a Family day.  This will be held once a year; we can have a committee.  Venue and price will have to be approved, prior to the acceptance of a Family Day.  In principle, the cost should be reasonable and low. Activities will be organised by an organising committee.  Every item or event must be organised by a SHC member, no external individuals or company.
  3. Third, the Family day will be open to members of SilverHairsClub, their brothers, sisters, grandfather and grandmother, children and grandchildren.
  4. Fourth, where possible, during the Family Day, there should be events for SHC members who come along and want to meet up with other SHC members only.

To set the ball rolling, and to set the concept right from the beginning, I would take the lead in the first Family Day.  Future EOs of family day will be appointed.  So, let’s get the ball running.

  • The first event will have to be held where there is a seaside.  There should also be a swimming pool.
  • The dates should cover a (Fri, Sat or Sun) or (Sat, Sun or Mon).
  • The venue should have accommodation, twin, family or dorm.
  • Food and drinks should be provided by the venue; or organised by the committee.  Eats can include BBQ, buffets, and cooking sessions.
  • Accepted young activities should include beach and water games, ball games, swimming pool, athlete sports, walks, card and indoor games.  An event will only proceed if there is an organiser or activity leader.
  • Accepted adult activities can include karaoke, talentime, meditation, talks, grooming, dancing, fishing or snorkelling.
  • There should be no plans for shopping or city tours.

We will take the next two months to work on the following:

  • The location, which would be outside Singapore, maybe in Johore.
  • We would target 80 pax in two coaches or even 120 pax in three coaches.
  • Preferably outside rainy season.
  • A target price would be SGD 100 or lower per person, twin sharing.  A discount for participants staying in shared accommodation.
  • The date should be this year, before end 2012.
  • If you like to volunteer to organise an activity, feel free to raise your hand.

Let’s crack and brainstorm, from now to 15 Aug 2012.  Thank you to members who did the initial groundwork and discussion.

Terence Seah

Updates:

  1. Members can pool car resources and drive to the Family day.  The coach fee will be taken off. Do share the petrol and toll fees.
  2. The most likely venue for now is Desaru area.

SHC monthly gathering (Central) Wed Jun 20, 2012

We have had our monthly gatherings, for most times at Hans Cafe in the CBD.  At the same time, we have Robert Ong organising the Easterlies group, while Dan Huang is re-initiating the Westerlies group.  The East and the West groups appeal well to the retirees.

Well, back to the Central group.  These gatherings tend to appeal to the retirees during the early part of the gathering, starting at 4pm.  After 5 or 6pm, the timings appeal well to the still-working members.  For this gathering, I tend not to have an agenda or topic.

Regular members use this gathering as an opportunity to meet one another, as well as meet new ones.

New members come and introduce themselves to other members.  New members can introduce themselves on this Post, so that others will know them before the gathering.

  1. Venue:  Hans Cafe, at Upper Pickering Street. Ground floor, at the back half of the cafe.
  2. Agenda:  Getting to know new and more SilverHairs.
  3. Date:  Wed Jun 20, 2012
  4. Time:  1600 hrs to 2030 hrs.
  5. Charge:  No fee.
  6. F&B:  Pick and pay whatever you like at the counter.
  7. Strictly for registered SHC members only.  All members are required to bring their own name tag.  If you need to make your own name tag, CLICK HERE.

This gathering is a good opportunity to catch up with other Event Organisers EOs on their activities.  If you like to meet some interest groups, again good to raise them here, so that they can contact you.

And if you need to know the latest updates on the Arabian nights, I am sure you can ask some of the committee members who may be coming to this gathering.  Of course, if you like to chat about the Thailand trips, let’s have a chat.  Any thing from fleamarts to it topics, to walks to cycling or potlucks, karaoke, etc. And favourites like retirement issues, investments, …..

Please register your interest to come here.  This will make the job easier for the organisers.

Strictly no discussions on politics, sex, race, religiion, direct selling and MLM.

First beginners guitar group gathering, Fri 15 June 2012

To all beginners guitar learners,

Please come along with your guitar. Hopefully, we can have an amateur guitar group very soon.

  • Date:  Fri June 15, 2012.

Next step after “What makes SHC more vibrant?”

Hi fellow members,

SHC has been around for 6 years.  We have made success with a number of activities.  We have also made good progress with membership.  However, there are some areas which I feel far more can be done.

One is the imbalances of membership sexes.

The other is a review of "Each member having to organise an activity during the lifetime of their membership". We rely too much on the regular organisers.

The last is "How do we handle domant members?.  We have many members, and they are contented with just reading what goes on in the club.

We have done a survey recently on "How to make SHC more vibrant".  While the numbers are small, the feedback is important.  We will need to review some of the top few feedback".

I will be seeking a discussion from active members, who have organised activities and get their feedback on how we can progress from here.  If you had been an EO, you will receive an email from me within a week.

Doing meaningful work, part-time or fulltime during your free time or weekends

Today, many Singaporeans are gainfully employed, either fulltime or part-time.  So, are SilverHairs members in the SilverHairsClub.  Most are well positioned for retirement, with a roof over their head, travel regularly during the year, participate in different kinds of activities and have a positive outlook towards their SilverHairs years.  You can tell many SilverHairs are contented with their lives.

There are also many SilverHairs who are looking forward to keeping themselves busy with meaningful work, especially part-time work.  Many SilverHairs have a wealth of experience from their previous career, their hobbies and interests and a host of knowledge acquired over the years.

Singapore is definitely short of experienced people, like yourself, to fulfill different roles in society.  If you are looking to offer your services to Singaporean families and organisations, you may like to publicise your availability and service via SilverHairs Enterprise PL (SHE).  SHE will accept only chargeable services.

SHE will offer these services to the public via advertising and other media.  You will be contacted, when an inquiry comes through via its reservations and appointments system.  If you like to participate, please email directly to SHE@SilverHairsClub.com your interest.  An application form will then be sent to you.

Taiwan TV drama “Night market life” – Why I like watching this series?

Whenever I am in Singapore on a Sat or Sun, I would rush home to keep a date with the TV drama LOVE. Now that the series has ended, I found another one "Night Market Life".  Never been so dedicated about such Peyton Place"  type shows until this late age of my life. When I travel and I have the time, I would try to watch the drama online 1-2 hours via XinMSN, but nowadays, it is not possible to view them due to territory restrictions.  But, this part of my life is not what I want to share with you.

I find these dramas very down to earth.  They are always about people, and always about love and jealously. In Night Market Life, the show starts with the actors and actresses as young kids, and finally now the kids have grown to adults.  The boys and girls get to know one another, got married and continue their adult life journey. Along the way, they find someone exciting, and make effort to spend time with the new found friend.  And, soon the relationship gets stronger, and good or bad, right or wrong, a new bond exists between people.

I am one of those in this group.  That’s how I got into my second relationship.  I still dare not say if I was right or wrong.  During the change, I had such a strain on my life, that some or especially my female friends called me all kinds of names, with nasty attachments.  But what can I do?  It’s done and life must go on.  I treasure what I have today and have not regretted it since.

As I get older, my outlook of life changes.  I tend to see human beings as chickens in the farm or fishes in the aquarium.  We run around or swim around, and we meet many other people.  In Night Market Life, the starting of all the different relationships are always sweet and pleasant.  Then, very quickly, life changes for all the actors and actresses.  Soon, one or both parties suffer.  Who is right and who is wrong?  As TV viewers, do we have the right to condemn him or her?

Allow me to share with you how I feel.  Neither do I condemn, nor do I bother myself.  I feel I have no right to say whether she is wrong or he is wrong.  I do not feel it is right to intervene, interfere or dissuade either parties. In a TV drama, there will always be an ending.  The actors and actress are far away from me.

So, why do I crazily watch these dramas?  Because they are a reality in human lives, that’s why.  This is my personal view, hope you respect it’s my view.  Agree or disagree, I only hope we all respect the actions and decisions of fellow members.

Feel free to express your views and give your comments.  I just read that Obama administration is in favour of gay marraiges.  I just cannot believe it.  By the way, I am still a no Saint.

Thailand – a driving and coastal trip in June 2012

Again, I dont have the dates.  Likely dates are Jun 9, 10 and 11, or 16, 17, 18, all dates inclusive.  Do read on. But, dont buy your tickets yet.  I can only confirm around 28 May.

As usual, all my trips are disorganised, so I dont really know anything until we get into the car.

June is a hot month, but it can be just as fun.  This time, we are going on a driving holiday; which means participants drive, and i sit on the left side of the car.  Dont worry about the road signs, they usually have English text.  As long as you have a Singaporean licence, can can.

Like May, we shall have a coastal trip, scenic and romantic.  We get to drive along the coastal roads, stop where we like, eat when we feel like it and rest, when it is time.  You must have a Singapore licence.  Dont worry as I will sit next to you, and take over when you are tired.

The journey will cover most of where the May group will travel on.  We will cover places where the van would not want to travel to.  Food wise, simple and local.  Language, we try in whatever thai you know. Bring your camera, as  you are not likely to capture the scenes with any organised tours.  No cockroaches, as most would have die or killed by the may group.

Where we stay, you have to be game.  We see a place, we like it, we stay.  If not, we drive on.  Cost wise, it will be slightly more than travelling via a van, as the car is shared among 4 people, instead of 8 to a van.  At most, we will have two cars.  Likely cost per car is Baht 1,800 per day, fuel excluded.

We should have a mixed participation of 4 men and 4 women; not 2 men and 6 women.

Preference to participate will always be given to those who register before 20 May 2012.

How to play the guitar, for beginners?

Every since I was a school boy, I had always wanted to play the guitar.  Today, 30 years later, I still cannot play the guitar.  I had bought a guitar, played it for a few days, and then, I forgot where it was.  Recently, I met a couple of friends, during dinner, and I was impressed by a 60 year old member, who could play the guitar, and was playing old songs that we all like, same age lah.  So, I am now hot up to learn how to play the guitar.

Dementia is a serious concern, although it can affect all oldies.  We forget our parents, the names of our children and where we left that gold coin.  In SHC, I learn that two kinds of activities can delay the onset of dementia.  One is learning a new language, the other is playing a musical instrument.  Of course, there is mahjong and soduko.

Well, I determine this time to learn how to play the guitar.  First, I bought a guitar song book of old songs.  Second, I subscribe to an online video of a series of "How to play the guitar" for USD 19.  All done in one day.  My next step is to look out for a second hand guitar, suitable for strumming.  Maybe if Jassmine permits in her online fleamart, I can advertise to buy an used guitar.  I like to buy it this week.

What I hope to do is to attract other like-minded Silverhairs to join me in this dementia delaying activity.  Then we can meet once in a while, somewhere and play together.  I have decided to go for online training because I don think I can find a patient teacher, and also I can practise and play at my own time.

Anybody else, like to go along the same line as me.  Helpers would be appreciated, in forming small groups.  A chance to teach an old bird how to sing.

3-4 days enjoying Thailand’s coastline in May or June 2012

May/June, we have the school holidays.  The weather is terribly hot; and the ideal clothes are either thin cotton or nothing.  Although I am in Bangkok this one week, I shall be back there again in May and Jun.

I plan to take a rest and enjoy the beautiful coast, south of Bangkok, all the way from airport to Bang Saen, down to Chonburi, Pattaya and Rayong.  This will be all coastal, and the highlights, I think will be sea, sea, mountain views, simple steam or grilled seafood, beach chairs, coconut ice-cream, down to earth massages, fresh air and sea breezes blowing over face.  Guaranteed plenty of cockcroaches in 2-4 star huts and hotels. We can have squeeky microphone/Karaoke.

Likely, I can advise the dates I am available next week before 5 May.  It is be 3-4 days, 3 nights max.  I will try for a In Sat, out Mon/Tues.  Fares are usually lower these dates.  If total is less than 4 pax, I will drive.  If total is less than 8 or 9, we shall have a van.  I look forward to half boys and half girls on this trip.

If you like the sea, look out on this Post.  Interested, let me know yet.  If you miss this trip, there is always another chance every month.  There is no price, except that we share all costs, including one scoop of ice-cream and thai whisky.  You will love the sunset and the early morning dawn!

April monthly gathering and future monthly gatherings

Dear members,

We are having difficulties getting members to run as EOs for the monthly gathering.  Juding from survey recently, the feedback indicates that most members would participate in the gatherings, if the activity or agenda is interesting.  But, at the same time, very few put up their hand to take the lead to do the monthly gatherings.

Perhaps, the time has come for the fixed regular monthly gatherings to be disbanded; and leave any monthly gathering to the initiatives of members.  When SHC was conceived, the platform to provide opportunities for SilverHairs to meet new friends was based on "Every one member has to organise one activity during the life of his/her membership".  However, this concept is difficult to follow through.  In fact, our feedback indicates that many members prefer to wait for someone else to organise activities, and they will participate only after all the hardwork has been done by the EOs/ECs.

Are we expecting too much from EOs?  Or should we relook at the concept and start looking at paying Event Organisers?  Maybe, this is another out of the box thinking.

On this forum, there has been many discussions on the setting up of "Short-term retirement homes outside Singapore for Seniors".  So far, we have many ideas and suggestions; but we have not been able to put up a feasibility paper.

Perhaps, this is a good time to bring together SHC members who like the idea, are interested in promoting this idea, with the aim of setting up facilities and services and also investing in the project if feasible.

Assuming we take 4 months to prepare a draft paper, the team can bring these ideas together, consolidate the discussion and finally write out a paper that is viable and feasible, practically and financially sound.  All participating members must have roles in the team.

If you have interest to work in this team, please let me know, and we will organise physical meetings and offline discussions.  Please indicate the role you would like to participate.

If the team can put up a feasibility paper, we can use it as an investment paper.  If you have experience and would like to participate, join the team.  I will coordinate the team; but if there is someone with experience in a similar project, do let me know.  Closing date for the formation of this team: 30 Apr 2012.

“Gathering fellow members to join in bulk purchases” is encouraged

A topic was raised to me at the recently monthly gathering.  It’s about "Gathering fellow members to join in bulk purchases".  We had also members raising this sometime in the forum; but members have not taken this idea up.  Actually, it was Jonathan Ong, who raised this up with me; and I remembered Kenneth Tan had also raised this before, with ovaltines.

Some members had raised ideas of co-operatives too.  Put it this way, I support this idea, although I don’t think we need to set up a co-operative.  The doors are open; and if you yourself want to purchase a product, and you know a company is willing to give you a good discount if you can gather 5 persons to buy the same product with a 10% discount, by all means, go ahead and let other members know, through the Club’s forum.  Make sure it is a good deal and offer.  It can be a cruise, 3 months supply of ovaltine, 3 sets of notebooks, 20 kopitiam vouchers, a car pool, two-to-go trip to anywhere, anything…

As long as we keep out of MLM products, I hope you can share your good buys with other members.  State the original price and the offer price or discount.  State the closing date.  Please do not use this as an advertising, even if you have no interest.

If you do not get the number of people to participate in the bulk purchase, please let members know by the closing date.  This would be courtesy.

I have created a new category called "Group buying".

Survey on “How to make SHC more vibrant?”

Hi May Woo,

I need your help to create a survey.   First, I shall get feedback on what are the possible questions from members.

Hi everybody,

All of us have either participated in the Club’s forum, in different events organised by fellow members and have organised activities for other members.  Among us, some of us are just reading the Club’s chat, not participating or waiting for a later date to participate or to organise an activity.  Some of us are not keen to participate.

Some of us feel the club can be more vibrant.  Of course, each of us have different perception of "What is vibrant?"

Well, I am going to ask May to create a survey with 10 questions which will be sent to all members.  I think a survey would be interesting.  You are invited to write here a question, which would be part of the 10 questions we will ask.  "How to make SHC more vibrant?".  Include 3 or 5 multiple choice answers. The top 10 most relevant questions will be chosen to form the survey.

Closing date:  15 April 2012.

I hope you will participate.

What if you cannot get through Terence’s head?

Hi everybody,

There could be occasions where you have a wonderful idea or suggestion, and you decide to approach Terence. You lay your idea or plan in front of him, but he finally says sorry, no, not accepted or not allowed.

Perhaps, I was not able to see the advantages or benefits of the idea. Or, I felt that this is too difficult to implement or the idea runs counter to our objective.

Well, let me give you another possible option. There are some members in the club whom I consult from time to time, so that I can hear a different perspective. They are also pretty outspoken.

Over the years, I have trusted their judgement and their dedication towards SilverHairsClub. I also tend to accept their views. Well, if you feel your ideas and suggestions needs pursuing, despite my saying no, or I am just arrogant or sheer idiotic, speak to some of these members. If you can convince them, I am very likely to accept their recommendations.

Give your idea a try.

So, do catch up with these boys and gals, it’s probably a better way or another way if you hit a wall.

600,000 people over 65 by 2020; the latest budget, CPF Life, increasing productivity. What do all these mean to us, SilverHairs?

We are not able to turn back the clock.  In less than 10 years time, there will be more than 600,000 Singaporeans over the age of 65.  By 2030, there will be ONE million Singaporeans over 65 years of age.  We may be fit now, but we are a part of this group.

In recent weeks, there is a lot of talk in the papers and in forums about the budget, and what it means to the elderly and the poor.  There is also stress of improving productivity.  And, changes made to CPF Life.  And, now one day a week off for domestic helpers.  What does this mean to us?

Join the discussion in SilverHairsClub.com; share your thoughts.  Strictly no politics.  Let’s welcome as many positive ideas and suggestions.  Hopefully, some government body or corporation may pick up some of our feedback.

I am going to put up the next update, on the 6th Mar 12nn.  If you like to be an EO for an activity which you like to share with other members, you may indicate them here in 3 lines (max).  Unclear events will not be accepted. I shall then attach it to the monthly update.  Preference for publishing will be for events which are for the general membership.

For those who like to see Yangon, enjoy the water festival 12 – 16 April 2012

Many of us have not visited Yangon, let alone see the rest of Myanmar.  I have visited Yangon at least 10 times, the last was with Ivan Lim last year.  Myanmar has been close to the world for many years; and it’s only in the last 10 months that there are signs of the country opening up.  Today, Myanmar has many visitors, all wanting to have a look at this unexplored country.

I have just returned from Yangon, and I am planning to go back this time to celebrate the water festival, which will fall on 12 – 16 April 2012.  Actually, it is a weeklong holiday, and I am hoping to have a few good water splashes.  This period is expected to be very hot.  The local currency is the Kyatt.  However, most hotels and tourist areas transact in USD.  Current exchange rate is about 1 USD = 850 kyatt.   1 SGD = 650 kyatt.

5 star hotels are expensive and limited.  However, 3 and 4 star hotels can be available for around USD 40. Some of you may have gone to Myanmar for meditation; Others for the temples; while others for the shopping. There are good Singapore and Malaysian food; these are easily available as many Singaporeans venture there for business and excitement of the unventured.

The trip is not confirmed; subject to hotel availability.  However, the likelihood of me going is high.  If you like to visit Yangon, I like to invite you to join me and a few other Singaporeans.  Tourism wise, it does not have many of the tourist places we see in other countries.  You will also get a chance to meet William Chew, one of SHC co-founders who has been there for the last 20+ years.  Enjoy the local food and get a taste of local shopping, morning markets, catch a glimpse of the lady, the lakes and local culture.

A tourist visa is needed, SGD 35, taking two days to apply.  Flights are not cheap, you can fly direct or you can fly via bkk.  Time wise, it is 1.5 hours behind Singapore.  There are plenty of cockcroaches, and there is no hot water.  If you like to join, simply indicate here.  You can withdraw at a later date.

And, for those who have been to Myanmar, in particular Yangon, feel free to share your experience and knowledge of this golden country.

Mahjong kakis and groups. Join a group or another group.

Recently, when I attended the monthly gathering for the West Enders, I found out that mahjong was a much talk about topic.  Once in a while, I also get to hear of individuals trying to find kakis; but have difficulties finding kakis near their home.  And, sometimes, when I attend functions, I see there are so many mahjong players.  I cannot play as I am afraid to lose money.

To help you find other kakis near your home, you may indicate you are a mahong kakis and the name of the road you stay, or just say North, South, East or West; and I shall list out by regions.  This is like a who’s who in mahjong.  I shall then ask the most active player to be the EO.  You dont have to organise, you just have to coordinate, North, South, East or West.

Geraldine Ting starts her new role as Club Manager wef 1 Mar 2012

Hi fellow members,guys and gals,
SilverHairsClub SHC has been around the last 6 years. We have an informal infrastructure, with activities and discussions organised by members putting in their heart and soul, for the benefit of the entire club members.  Thanks to the many Event Organisers EOs who have drawn SilverHairs together.  Our key objective to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends has worked; and we will continue to work towards fulfilling this objective.  A number of EOs have remained active, month after month and year after year.  We should also thank all the Event Coordinators ECs, who have shared with us their joy, hobbies and interests, by inviting us to their events, while taking care of SHC members as a group.

We do not have many supporting roles.  Key ones include our Picture manager and our Online Fleamart coordinator. And, not forgetting the Club manager.

Whenever I am in Singapore, I eagerly attend little gatherings here and there to look for a Club Manager.  Well, this time, I believe I have been successful. The term starts 1 March 2012 and ends 31 Dec 2012.  Some of you may know her; she is Geraldine Ting; her main residence is in Hong Kong.  She joined SHC in March 2009.

Although she lives overseas, she is a vibrant lady in the club. Someone who speaks her mind; but the best thing about Geraldine is she is full of nonsense.  She is creative and has good PR.  But, wait until she speaks her mind.  That’s all I know about this lady.

What I hope with Geraldine coming onboard is to see more excitement and vibrance in SHC.  We may be into our SilverHairs years; but we are also entitled to put a new life ahead of us.  And, by excitement and vibrance, I mean maximising creativity and imagination.

Welcome on board as the new Club Manager of the SilverHairsClub.  Let’s all welcome Geraldine.

Valentine day is just around the corner. Time to remember our loved ones.

Everyone of us knows Valentine Day.  We think of love and we remember our loved ones.  It’s a good time for children to remember what their parents have done for them; and to thank them for taking care of us all these years.  We love our parents; never mind where they are.

While love is treasured anytime and everytime, Valentine Day is one occasion we stop what we are doing and spend some time with our spouse.  For some of you, Valentine Day may mean a stalk of rose or a nice romantic dinner.  Maybe, it could be some time at the East Coast Park, standing on the breakwaters, and screaming out loud "Ja, I love you".  Still, that little bit of time together while we have the time.

There is fun among friends too.  Our close friends, gather together for some beers, in some noisy corners of Singapore.  A nice way to dance the night away till 3am the next morning.  Get drunk, and instead of going home, you spend the night on the foot path.  Why not?

For those who have met someone new in their life, why not, send a few stalks of lemon grass, cut nicely into a flower.  There are many more years ahead for all of us.

So, be Valentine Day be spent with our children, friends or loved ones, it’s a nice time to be romantic.

And, if you are not shy, you can post your wishes here.  Join together for dinner.  Or have someone send the roses for you.  Have fun.
