Whatsapp has become very popular, and almost all smartphone users have the Whatsapp application.  It is use for fast communication, and interests groups find discussions on Whatsapp fast and meaningful.  At the same time, one can drop out of the chat if they wish to, anytime.

Hosting gatherings at your home

For SHC events, we have held many of our activities at restaurants, cafes, cinemas, foodcourt, public parks and beaches, country clubs, homes, condo function rooms, hotels, sometimes in Singapore, nearby countries and also faraway destinations.

We can now explore further, having some of our activities in the homes. I guess we can work on the following concept.
1.  SilverHairsClub will organise and pay for the use of the place, food and drinks, clean-up and a fee for the maid.
2. We can do small groups, hosting 5-15 members, subject to venue and member’s convenience.
3. All activities are open to Seniors in Singapore and SilverHairsClub members. There will be a fee charged.
4. For security purposes, only members who register personally at SilverHairsClub.com can participate.
5. Each gathering would have a focus eg mahjong, arts and crafts, karaoke, viewing a movie, sharing pictures of an overseas holiday, cooking and receipe planning sessions and hydroponics gardening. Games, chess, holiday planning, small business discussions, IT sharing, talks and charity programs can also be in the plan.
Casual chitchats are unlikely to be organised by the club. Chit-chat activities can be organised by any member, as is being done now by ECs.
6. Concept-wise, the organiser will be SilverHairsClub, so the club can schedule various prgrams. The member in the house or apartment plays the role of host, and makes his/her place available on certain dates and times. The activity will be held, subject to acceptance by the venue member and SilverHairsClub.
7. The objective of hosting activities in the homes is to encourage close group interaction among members for specific interest. We are looking at running these activities regularly, rather than adhoc basis. As our activities are not govt-funded and as volunteers are hard to come by, we have to find a workable solution to pay for costs and the organisers and yet give an option for SilverHairs and other seniors to enjoy their interests and meet up with friends.
8. An organising committee, comprising SilverHairsClub members, will be set up to manage these activities.  The team committee will be paid a reasonable fee.
This idea of “Hosting activities in the homes” is not new. It has been ongoing and organised by various members. But, it has been limited to small groups and not open to other members.

Sharing a day with the Batam kids, Sat/Sun 27/28 Jun 2015.

This trip is cancelled as Hari Raya falls during our intended trip.

Ong Lin Khim, whom some of you have met, has been a regular resident and visitor to Batam for many years.  For almost 10 years, I have noticed his interest in helping young children with their education and day-to-day living.  Batam was the place, because he has some very close Indonesian friends living there.

He has  a small two-storey house, perched on a slight hill.  From here, his staff does some work, and Ong organises help programs for a number of villages and kids.  He loves to see kids who wants to study.  Sometimes, I joined him when he and his staff buy groceries from the shops and distributes eggs, rice and dailies to villages and kids.  I was impressed as he has been doing this activities for many years.

Recently, he helped fund the setup of a Warong, a stall with a beautiful facing of the sea, and close to where he works and stays.  Some of you may know that a Warong is a small stall, selling coffee, tea, some snacks and food.  I had been there to his house, which has a balcony and a living room where he and me can sleep on the floor.  It wasnt a luxury, but there was airconditioning and bathroom. This house is not in the city but it is about 20 minutes from the ferry Sekupang.  It’s quiet and relaxing.

I have asked Ong if some of us could stay at his 2-star house, oops, no swimming pool overnight, participate in his charity work and that after the next day’s breakfast, we could venture into town and have dinner there, before catching a boat to Singapore.

He was reluctant because he thinks that his place and warong would not be up to SilverHairs expectations and standards.  But, finally, he agrees to give it a go and try.  He will provide free on-the-floor accommodation at his house, and participants will pay for the marketing which his staff will cook Indonesian style ie lunch, dinner and breakfast.  We talk about transport, and I have asked his Indonesian staff to look out for a van and motocycle taxis.  I did request for female motorcycle taxis.

The purpose of this activity is to partipate in “Meeting the Batam kids”.  Participants can bring their unused clothes, pens, pencils, balloons, toys, etc, as seen appropriate to young kids and adults.  For groceries, we can contribute a token to buy some stuffs from the local market.

I have set the following activity details.  If you would like to spend an overnight in Batam, one day on charity, overnight at Ong’s place, having food cooked by local Indonesians,and finally spend the following afternoon in Batam city, do let me know.

  • Date:  Sat/Sun 27/28 June 2015.
  • Meeting point at harbourfront: 1st boat out
  • Return point at Batam:  last ferry
  • Costs:  Everybody pays for own ferry.
  • Accommodation: At Ong’s 2 Star residence, complementary
  • Food – Lunch, Dinner, breakfast – we share and pay the local cooks
  • Giveaways to the villages and kids – we bring along during the trip
  • Number of pax: 6 to avoid us falling through the floors.

Moving from DayCare to SHC Orchids

If there is anything some of us are good at, it has to be dreaming.  Dreaming is a great activity.  First, we dream about Day Care.  For some of us, we have been with SilverHairsClub for 10 years.  Now, we think about what we will do when we get older, and less mobile.  We conceptualise a few ideas.

Next, we move on, and we conceptualise “SHC Orchids”.  A nice pretty word, less hostile and more welcoming than Day Care.  Essentially, the same activities as what we are doing now, but with more focused activities, suitable for SHC members who have difficulties with mobilty.  But, still working on the same platform to allow us to meet new friends and catch up with old friends.

Maybe SHC Orchids will expand to more Singaporean seniors.  Maybe arts and crafts, hobbies, indoor activities.  I dont know.  But, we will keep developing.

I like to encourage members who have arts and craft skills to come forward.  You can teach, conduct short courses to interested members, and we can expand your skills and training as part of SHC Orchids programmes.  You can charge a fee for your training, nobody would expect you to do so for free.

There are a number of you with arts and crafts skills.  Do let me know if you are interested to work along such a plan.  I am sure a number of us would be interested to hear from you.

Almost everyone of us do have a smartphone nowadays. There are so many features in these phones. For this meeting we can discuss and exchange ideas on the features and on how we can make the most out of the features. We can also share on the various apps available for us to use. Many of these smartphones have so many features, that we rarely use all of them. We can share and indicate what phone we are using and then gather in groups according to the type or brand of phone. Each group sits around a table, and try to show one another what we have, what we know and what applications we have.
Although for this meeting we focus on smartphones but we also welcome everyone to come and meet up with one another and discuss topics of your interest. Lately we have quite a number of members who are keen to talk about coins and currencies collecting and their values. All others who may want to talk about travelling, eating or even dancing and singing are also welcome. Just register your interest and on that day those who like to talk on your subject will know how to look out for each other. I am also looking for 2 volunteers to help in the registration and facilitating of the meeting. Thank you.

The concept of the Event Organiser EO

10 years ago, when the idea of SilverHairsClub started, I was thinking how to keep SHC alive for a long time. At that time, there were few activities, although the monthly gathering was what kept many members coming.  The concept of the Event Organiser EO developed over the years, and today, I see EOs as the key reason why the Club does not have a management committee.

Over the years, we have tried having a management committee, but this ideas has not been successful.  One reason which I have observed is our general membership tends not to respond to or accept a management committee.  Many have voiced staying on with the EO concept.  The other reason which some members have silently and behind the scene told me is “The reason why the management committee failed was because I did not enpower the committee members”.  There is some truth with this viewpoint.

However, over the years, I have come to accept that a management committee does not work in SHC, although we can see successful management committees with most other Clubs.  This explains why you see a less structured organisation within SHC in recent years,

Personally, I would like to see a committee work within SilverHairsClub, I am receptive to the committee idea, if someoneoffers to take the lead.  My business travel has made it almost impossible to spend more than a few days each month in Singapore.

In the meantime, what has worked so far is our EOs have kept SHC alive and going.

Old currencies used in Singapore

I was at the bank to deposit some money including some old currency notes that are legal tender when it dawned on me they might be collector’s items and worth more than their face value.  I also have some Japanese ‘banana’ money that used to be worthless. I thought they might be in demand now.

Does anyone in SHC know the value of the old currencies shown in the image below? It will save me a trip to the antique shops if someone does.  :)  The image shows:

It was quite interesting scrutinizing these old notes and coins and thinking of the history of early Singapore.

What would you do if you are alone at home, and you had a serious fall?

fall2    fall1 I was with a few friends in Petaling Jaya last night.  My Malaysian friends have retired; and we discussed life during retirement, and getting old. Many of my friends were fit; they play golf, and travel extensively. Two weeks ago, I attended the wake of a long time friend of mine who has been with me in the newspaper industry for almost 30 years.  He was only 55, and he suffered a stroke, I understood no one knew about it, until it was too late.

Many of us are alone at some times of the day.  As for me, I travel a lot, staying in hotel rooms most days in a year.  Well, I sleep alone most nights.  How I wish I had company every night; unfortunately it is not the case.  Guys, I swear by what I say.

Seriously, dont meant to joke about being alone.  But, many of us are alone at times, at home, in the office, while travelling or at an unknown or familiar place. Husbands, wives, girlfriends are not around to help or may have switched off their phones.  We may have a fall; we may sleep through and not wake up.  We could have locked the room door.  The chest was getting breathless and the pain was spreading.  We may have only 10 minutes; and we dont know what to do.  The only thing we have is our phone or smartphone.

Really, guys and gals, what would you do?

Many members trade daily or frequently in Singapore, regional and US markets. We have not many of such activities, but a number of members have requested for such gatherings.  The most recent event was on US options.

Let’s try to have one such event soon.  Our Kenneth Tan has been very supportive, and he would help us hold this event at this condo’s function room.

  1. Date:  Haha, not confirmed.  Preference for a weekday as weekends maybe crowded.
  2. Venue:  Club’s function room, located near the swimming pool at Kenneth’s condo.
  3. Objective:  provide a platform for investors and traders to share what they are doing in stocks and shares, options, commodities.
  4. Entrance Fee:  will announce one we have an idea of numbers, what we want and costs.
  5. Number of pax:  Likely limited to the size of the function room; and on a first registered and paying basis.

Photo Walk on 30-05-2015 (Saturday)

It’s a long time since I last organized a photo walk. I am planning a repeat of one of the past walks. We will start from Raffles Place MRT and walk along Marina Bay to the Merlion Park. Then we walk along Cavenagh Bridge, crossing the Singapore River and walk along Singapore River, passing Raffles landing site and continue to Elgin Bridge. From here, we continue to walk along the Singapore River till we reach Clarke Quay MRT. For those who want to break off from here can do so or they can continue to walk till we reach Liang Court Departmental Store.

We will meet at Raffles Place MRT on the date and time stated below. Come and share with us your photo-taking skills.

For those interested in IT, you can continue to make a short movie with the pictures taken using Microsoft Windows Movie Maker. I can show you how if you are interested.

Introducing a weekend of adventure at Khao Yai National Park, 10-12 Oct 2015

Some of you have joined me at Khao Yai National Park. This will be the first event dedicated to SilverHairsClub members and children, aged 26 and above. We intend to hold this exciting event in Oct, from a Friday to a Sunday.

Khao Yai is located some 1.5-2 hours north-east of the old Donmuang airport. It is ideally suitable for young adults, beautiful waterfalls in October, a good place to look out in its natural habitats for wild elephants, deers, junglefowls, Asian bears, and bird watching.

I plan to stay in tents, which we can buy on our own or rent from the National Park. We will arrange a cook to handle our dinners and breakfast. Ideally suited for members and their adult children.

For ourselves, there are grape plantations, where we can enjoy fresh grapes, juices, red and white wines. Also a good local beef steak.

There is adventure land, with horse riding, ATVS, rides. Our adult kids will enjoy time together, and they will find btheir own time to mingle with one another and get to know one another better. Car racing, and other trills which we used to enjoy when we were young. Bring your sons and daughters along. You have to make the effort.

Quietly located, Khao Yai air is fresh, the morning is cool and a good time to spend with family. Important our children can mix with other children.

Golf. Loves, we can play as the famous “Forest hill” golf course, where many tee offs start from a height. It’s easy.

I intend to make it easy, as we will have helpers to make our trip fun, enjoyable and meaningful.

This trip is for you and your adult children. Our plan is to arrive at the airport, and head straight for Khao Yai, 2 hours away.

Confirmed date:  Meet at DonMuang airport at 10am morning and 10am at Survanabhumi airport (if a group is formed) on Sat 10 Oct and we arrive back at Don Muang airport on Mon 12 Oct at about 5pm.  Others can proceed to Bangkok for other activities.

Tentative plan for the Khao trip:

  • Sat 10 Oct 1000 hr – Tour guides will pick us up at DonMuang airport. At the new airport, if there is a group.  Tour guides are a legal requirement to protect the tourism industry. We plan to have one guide per van, besides a driver.
  • 1300 hr – 2 hours drive, followed by Lunch in Khao Yai, followed by Khao Yao sights. Winery and waterfal. This is almost the end of the raining season, so weather is dry; but plenty of greens and beautiful waterfalls.
  • 1600 hr – Check into to tents before night fall so as to enjoy the scenary. Enjoy the beautiful sights of KhaoYai. Also, can have an open air swimming pool. Walks and cycling.
  • 1700 hr – For those who are keen to join the night safari to look out for National Parks night animals, the group will leave at 5pm. Gate close at 6pm.  Your registration required. Return to base camp at about 7.30 pm to 8 pm.  1-2 hours. Participants sit on open pickups. Torches not required. Need to be quiet and follow the instruction of the Parks guides.
  • 1900 hr – Campfire plus rustic Barbeque dinner.
  • 2230 hr – Back to enjoy the skies, continue with food and drinks. Crawl into the tents and snore the night away. Closing 12 midnight.
  • 2400 hrs – Back to room and sleep for the night.
  • 1900 hrs – Dinner, Karoake and dancing in the hotel.
  • 1200 hrs – lunch. More sights of Khao Yai.
  • 0900 hrs – Sights of Khao Yai National park.
  • 0630 hrs – Breakfast and checkout. A simple placing of your luggage, tagged, at the hotel lobby. The porters will place your luggage in your resort bedroom.
  • Sun 11 October 0500 hrs – for earlyrisers to catch the first rays of sunlight. May need to drive out. Enjoy the mountain scenary.
  • Monday 12 Oct 0630 hrs – Breakfast.
  • 0515 hrs – To Khao Yai Golf course, for players only. Tee off 0600 hrs sharp.  Only for golfers.  Maybe we organise some eggs for you with coffee.
  • 1000 hrs – For non-golfers, we go to Premium Outlet, if you like shopping your years supply.
  • 1130 hrs – Those who would like to shop their whole years supply of clothings, we will go to Premium Outlet. Save your money now for fashion shopping.
  • 1200 hrs – Visit to ChokChai farm, the largest diary farm in Thailand. We can have the famous ChokChai steak here. And try local Thai steak.
  • 1600 hr – leave for Don Muang airport. For those going to Bangkok, we can arrange for you to go to Bangkok (selected spots only).

Trip to Surat Thani from Bangkok

This Sat, Thais begin a long water festival holiday called Songkran. It is the Thai New Year. During the festival, adults pour water on the palm or back of their parents, as a mark of respect, while children and adults make the event fun by splashing water on the bodies of one another. It’s fun and thousands of foreigners congregate in Thailand to celebrate this occasion. Many thais start the holiday this Sat and ends next Sun, almost 9 days.

I am in Bangkok, and will drive to Surat Thani, which is in Southern Thailand, and will take me 10 hrs, with a number of stops. For those who went to Samui with me for the Full Moon party, you may remember we stopped at Surath Thani.

Starting from Sat, I shall write about my trip, put up some pictures and hope you will enjoy them. I hope you will join me sometime.

I hope to encourage members to share their holidays too. Keep in touch.

Anniversary Celebration of Badminton at Gombak

Dear All
The badminton kakis at Gombak had existed since 2011.
We played on Thursdays, then shifted to every Tuesdays, 10.00am to 12.00noon at Bukit Gombak Indoor stadium.
We are celebrating our 4th Anniversary on 21 April 2015 (Tuesday) after our regular games.
We accept all players of all skills levels. Just come attired in non-marking shoes and comfortable exercise attire. We provide shuttlecocks and rackets (if you don’t have one).

3 recommendations to hold our monthly gatherings

Three places have been identified as possible venues to hold our regular SHC monthly gathering.  There are:

  1. Lee Kong Chian Food court – Basement 1.
  2. HarbourFront Food court – 4th floor, located at NEL
  3. SMU food court – located at Circle line

Thank you to the members who have suggested these places.  Ideally, we are looking for a place which does not require us to commit to a certain number of pax.  The venue should be located close to a train station.  Food and prices should be varied, so that we can cater to different needs.  The place should be relativelyquiet during the hours of 5pm to 8pm.

We will make the decision based on your comments.

Farewell to Ex-Prime minister Lee Kuan Yew

lky2    lky3Ex-Prime Minister LKY passed away early this morning.  He had contributed immensely to what Singapore is today; and is indeed the founding father of our island home.  Usually, SilverHairsClub forum does not dwell on political or government issues; but ex-PM Lee passing is a significant and important event in our lives.

Let’s open this post to members to offer their comments, opinion and wishes to the man who made Singapore and  gave us the life we have today.

In 1971, the first email was sent. Before that, we write on a piece of paper, put in an envelope with an address, go to the Post Office to buy the stamps and post it. It may take about 2 weeks to reach our friends or love ones.

Though the above is still available, we now has a better and more efficient way to communicate. We call this “E-Communication”.

With E-Communication, we can communicate through emails (and other means) and your friends or love ones will receive your “letter” almost instantly.

I’m arranging a Makan Sutra kakis meet on Thursday, 2 April for those who are interested in having a makan fellowship together.  Details are as follows:

  • Date:         Thursday, 2nd April
  • Time:         11.30 am – 2.30 pm
  • Place:        The Bryani House, 01-21 Kallang Wave Mall (next to the Stadium mrt station .. 3 mins walk)
  • Cuisine:      Chicken, mutton, fish bryani, prata, murtabak, tissue prata, all types of curry ….. hot and spicy
  • Drinks:        All types ~ tea Tarik, honey lime, syrup limau, bandung etc (plenty of choices)
  • Payment:    Just order whatever you like from the counter and pay individually

I have tried the bryani at this place and its super!  In fact, our PM had hosted a bryani meal for Malaysian PM, Mr Najib at this place.

I have booked 12 seats at this place. I can increase the seating capacity if there’s a better demand ya?  Please register here if you’re interested.  It will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
