Who is Ah Liu?

Many have asked who is Ah Liu?  I have met him once.  He is 5.6m, a hopeless beer drinker, has a mole on his left ear, smart, terribly engaging, and very human.

On this forum, you can see he writes well, seems knowledgeable on everything from books to tree climbing, probably a Hokkien, and sometimes, he appears to be out-of-the-way in his thoughts.  But, the reality is he is very engaging, sharp and supportive of the Silverhairsclub.

I have yet to understand him.  I hope you will find some time during the D&D to meet him.  He wears a ring on the middle finger.  Cheers and have fun.

Our SHC Jingle – thanks to composer and musician Ronald Wi and singer Clara Chay

This is really great.  Ronald Wi has completed the SHC Jingle, in time for the Dinner & Dance.  The song is now ready, and you can hear it, on your PC. Ronald and Clara, thank you very much, on behalf of all SilverHairsclub members.

Composer and musician: Ronald Wi

Singer: Clara Chay

Song title:  Yes, We are Silver Haired (Jingle).  Click here to hear song.

Sure as the sun will set,
As our youth starts to fade,
Friends start to drift afar,
Future seems cold and dark.

Each day we seem to lose,
What we have done so far,
Nothing seems like before,
Values change each passing day.

<Chorus>

What do we do from here,
How can we warm our cold,
Find friends that will hear,
Of silver hairs and growing old.

Where is there something free,
Like breeze from the sea,
Refreshing our tired souls,
Only here in, SHC.

So If you feel like me,
And want some cheer that’s free,
A smile, a chat, or a pat,
To get you back on track.

They’re friends like you and me,
Young old in SHC,
Like silver, gold it’s free,
Come join our company.

***
Yes, we are Silver Haired,
More golden years ahead,
Friends we’ll like to make,
Sharing our warmth and light.

So if you want some cheer,
Like the breeze from the sea,
You’re always welcome here,
Come join our, SHC

The Number

Nowadays I have little time to read fiction, so no more the 396 pages of Forsythe or King and no more the lost sleep from trying to get to the end of the book. Yes, is it because that I feel there’s little time for vicarious pleasures in reading novels? Instead, I gravitate towards non-fiction works; no, not really, just books that tell you, teach you rather: like "How to Live Life like a Millionaire with Whatever You’ve Got in What Time You’ve Left, But Were Afraid To Ask".

Anyway, I’ve just read The Number by Lee Eisenberg (Clara, you can get it at the library) and it’s a book about The Number. So what’s that?

It takes some ploughing into the book, but The Number is just the "amount" of money that you feel you’d need to live the rest of your years after retiring. Reading it you’d come to the conclusion that Americans are very secretive about revealing the amount that they really want and Lee spends quite a bit of verbiage to explain this phenomenon. I cannot explain this except that Americans just want to be one-up on their neighbours. So if Jacko next door is seemingly richer, then Richie has to up his ante even on the retirement sum he thinks he’ll need in 30 year’s time!

I don’t have that problem: I need $20 million when I retire. However, I’ll settle for $2 million! See, the Chinese don’t have that hang-up.

So I doggedly plod on through the book… until page 228 when the whole message is summed up in the questions posed by George Kinder who is a so-called Life Planning Coach. These new-fangled descriptions of financial planners or insurance agents…

Kinder asks 3 questions to his clients and advisors, telling them to write their responses.

Question 1: If you had all the money you need, what would you do? How’d you live, etc.

After a time, he’d get to the next question.

Question 2: You have all the money you need, but your doctor tells you that you have a rare disease which would result in your sudden demise in 5 to 10 years, but otherwise you’ll feel fine, what would you do, etc?

Again he waits for the quick written responses.

Question 3: You feel fine, but you only have 24 hours to live. What did you miss? What did you get not to be? What did you not get to do?

So, the first two questions dealt with material wants but the third question is qualitative. And it is this third question that should determine what The Number should be. At least that’s how I see it.

Beyond this, Lee presents his views rather irreverently, slightly humourously. He delves into selecting the financial advisor, broker, fund, blah and finally gives a worksheet to work out your sums for retirement.

It’s just another thought for all of us to think about our retirement years.

Great Weather.  A challenging walk and thankyou to all who have emailed and all                                            who supported the walk. No serious casualty except a lady trip over a small branch.   No                                  serious injuries and no chance for lau hero to flex muscles.  No see ice cream pedlar                                                or hor hia ti (heavens know what’s tis??).   Disappointed – No early release for                                                      them for good behaviour.  So, in conclusion, what works here does not apply in Hades.
All of us hungry after the climb and ended off with dinner at the shophouses                                                        behind the BT shopping centre.   Pleasantly surprised to see SMLee (in maroon shirt).

This coming Saturday, the SHC line dancers will be late due to their participation in the monthly walk.

They will be going to F.E. Sq. only after their walk and dinner.  Therefore, there will not be any lesson this Saturday.  Also, there will not be any posting of the dance list as – request will be made on ad hoc basis as and when required by SHC dancers.

The jam will start as usual at 7pm, Far East Square, Metal Gate.  Dress colour code : White.

Line Dance

Terence, It was a pleasant surprise to see you on Sat. and new comer Dave.

Dave, it was your first time – so, don’t be too hard on yourself.  "Rome was not build in one day."  Continue to come and join in the fun and exercise.

There was another new comer – a lady who came late.  She came at the end when you guys have already had your "lessons and practices on the dance floor".

A reminder for anyone who wish to join us on Sat.  "Lesson" at 6pm followed by "dancing" from 7pm onwards.

Details of venues and timing for Sat. and Wed. nights line dancing have been posted previously in this website, so I will not repeat it here.

Hope to see more new faces joining us either on Wed or Sat.

SHC D&D – Why I am in the mood?

Some 25 years ago, I was in London, and on a number of weekends, I used to visit the discotheques at Leicester Square.  With the coming of the D&D, I suddenly got into the mood this morning to share with you two songs, which I had linked to YouTube.  The first time, you listen to it, the quality is not good.  On your speakers, and listen to it the second time.

  1. Dancing Queen – by Abba.  Click here.
  2. Saturday Night Fever – Dancer John Travolta.  Click here.

Feel free to share your favourites, before the D&D.  Share with fellow SilverHairs your mood.

A number of SilverHairs have had discussions about what life will be like, during our SilverHairs years.  One conclusion.  The internet will help us keep in touch with one another, even if we are overseas.  So, give this SHC webchat a go.  See you then.

SilverHairsClub D&D 2007

The response to the SHC D&D at Serangoon Gardens Country Club ballroom has been more than overwelming.  Even I am surprised at the numbers.  Many members have not met one another, yet we are all looking forward to the friendship among SilverHairs.

Event Organiser Dolly Lim has refused to let me know the program for the night, so I cannot tell you too.  The organising committee has promised an exciting evening, but like all SilverHairsClub events, we try to do everything ourselves, at the best we can.  So, be prepared for some surprises, little faults and missed timings.  I am over 50, and there are many of us over 45. So, come and enjoy the company of other SilverHairs.

Strictly for SilverHairsClub members only.  Read all about the D&D here.

SHC overnight – July 2007

The idea of going out for an overnight outing in Batam, Johor Bahru, Pulau Ubin or at one of Singapore’s 7 islands has been raised a number of times, but we have never kicked it off.  One idea include going to Batam or Bintan for a 2-day overnight with games, health exercises, investment chats, etc.  Another idea was to Johor Bahru to a resort, and include games, eats, interaction, relaxation, retirement discussion.  So far, these are week-ends and supposedly very relaxing.  The aim is to increase interaction opportunities and knowing one another better.   Ok, we now set our minds to going to have one of these events.

Tentative, I have set a date for Sat/Sun 7/8 July 2007.  Please put your ideas or suggestions here.  There is no bad idea.  And, if you can come, simply register your name here.  And, I am on the lookout for SHC overnight Event Organiser too.  Raise your hands please.

If you know of a place, a hotel, a resort, a camp area with food, less than SGD 55 per pax, please share with us all.  Nasi lemak and teh tarik will do. 3 star lodgings or bungalows will do.  Domitories are ok, as long as one dunlop and one pillow per person.  No need for hot water.  One or two cockcroaches no problem. Hopefully, can bring bicycles along.

Let’s start.

There is a suggestion to go Batam, Comment 14.

General Info on Line Dancing

The following is a reply to enquiries posted in the Line Dancing comments which I thought might be informative for all by posting it here in the General Forum.

Dear Sadliu and Onlysue,

Practically all CCs conduct line-dancing classes from elementary to advance level.

SHC line dancers congregate at 2 venues that I know of :

1) Sat. public dancing at Far East Square, China St. from 7 to 10.30pm

2) Wed. Practice sessions at rooftop of Blk.146A Toa Payoh (opp. HDB Hub) from 7.15pm onwards.

At the moment, SHC line dancers are working hard at these 2 venues in preparation to perform for the SHC Annual D&D on 24 Mar.

Make your way to any of these venues and you will meet the SHC line dancers.

In general:
It is easier for line dancers to pick up social dance than for social dancers to pick up line dancing.  The reason :  line dance steps incorporate steps from other forms of dancing such as cha cha, sambal, rumba, latin, broadway, jazz, waltz, etc.  Line dance step comprises a set of 8 counts versus 4 in other forms of dancing.  A simple line dance ususally have a minimum of 32 counts.

How fast one picks up line dancing depend very much on the individual.  Some are ‘natural’ dancers, some work hard to achieve, some just go with the flow.  Whatever the case might be, one thing for sure – line dancers will keep their body and mind healthy because it is not just physical exercise, but brain work as well.

Caution :
Some line dancers stressed themselves out by trying too hard to "master" every dance.  In the end, they get ‘burned out’.  One should try one’s best within one’s limit so that one can enjoy the music as well as the pleasure of dancing.

You can check out the following websites as well :

http://www.espioneer.com/template.asp?vid=lds

http://www.geocities.com/dancediary/

All are welcome.  Hope you can come join in the fun as well.! emoticon

March BT Reserve Brisk Walk

The Walk:  Early birds can view the exhibits at the Visitor Centre before the Walk.  We can take the hard road trail or the South View Path trail into the foliage to reach the summit.  Part of the path is closed because of landslide in December.  You may have to climb more than 150 steps to the Summit.  Total time taken: 1 to 2  hr.   For those who cannot take slopes/climbs,  pl consult your family Doctor for advice.  For your info  :                                                                           840 flowering plants and over 500 species of animals.  Donot feed the monkeys.  Whichever trails, we take, the place is very shady.  As usual, bring umbrellas/ponchos in case rain, water bottle.                                                                                                                                                                        Dinner:   Available at the shophouses opposite Courts (the other side of Courts).
Additional Points: We need the walk to shed off extra kg accumulated during the lunar New Year.  An opportunity for those who have registered for the D&D in March to meet and cultivate friendship to brace up for the occasion.  For first timers who wish to join the walk and need more info, leave a comment here, and I shall reply you.  Hope to see you all.    Veronica Wong

Twenty Good Summers

Hi all SHC members

Yes, I’ve been reading Twenty Good Summers by Martin Hawes and it’s basically a book about financial planning and retirement (lifestyle change). But it’s also a book that addresses the needs and concerns of those reaching their 50s. We often come to realise that we need to radically make a change in our lives when we come to the milestone ages of 40, 50 or 60. For me, it’s coming to 60, the BIG SIX ZERO! So, technically, I only have ten good summers left… a sobering and humbling thought. But take heart, there is more to it then just sitting and moping and doing nothing. One way to make a difference in our lives is through our SHC participation and sharing. I thank our founder and members for their unstinting support and friendship.

Let me just share the final paragraphs of Martin’s book:

"There is still time to do all the things you have always wanted ‘if you act firmly and decisively. There is not time for wishing, waiting and hoping though. You have to cut to the chase and start living the life you have always wanted.

If you are not going to have some good summers now, when are you going to have them? This is a serious question – you are never going to be fitter or more capable than you are now; you are never going to be in a better position to enjoy your life than you are now; you will never enjoy your time as much as you will now. If your life is not what you want it to be, change it. This may mean doing something quite radical, something that may raise the eyebrows of oyour family and friends. But it is your life – the only one you are likely to have in this world at least – so get on with doing what you want. If there was ever a time to do the things you have always wanted to do, this is it. It’s time to make every summer count."

Happy New Year to all SilverHairs

On behalf of the founders of the SilverHairsClub, I would take this occasion to wish all SilverHairs a Happy and prosperous Lunar New Year.

You may not hear it, but the fireworks have started.  The kids are putting tin cans over small crackers placed in the ground.  Long strings of red crackers are hung across the front of the houses, ready for the seniors to lit.  Everybody dresses in red, pony tails for the kids.  Lots of loud voices, running around.  A grand reunion dinner awaits generations of families this lunar new year eve.

To many good years ahead.

SilverHairsClub 07 Feb gathering photos

SilverHairsClub Feb gathering photos are out.  Over 40 participants attended, full house, but place was too small.  Guess we cannot use this place anymore.

After the monthly gathering, some SilverHairs crazily and last minute decided to go to Outram MRT market for Lo Hei and supper.  Guess too hungry after 8pm.  Here are the photos.

Playing the keyboard/Singing karaoke songs

I know how to play a handful of simple tunes on the Yamaha keyboard and I am interested to take up lessons to increase my repertoire of songs.

I am also wanting to master a handful of English karaoke songs so that when I go for karaoke sessions, I don’t have to just listen while others sing.

Does anyone know of willing and able teachers?

Thanks for reading my post.
