We welcome all suggestions. In the event we do take time to run those courses it’s likely that we cant find volunteer trainers. Pls excuse us. If you are able n available to run any course pls come n join us.

For info, here is a full description of No. 18 Bali Lane –

1. The place is equipped with wireless LAN and wired network. However, we do not provide PCs nor notebooks here. This is because the venue is designed for stock trading where traders generally bring their own equipment.

(Minimal 5 people). For larger group, we can offer a fixed price. The cost is $450 per half day and $850 per full day, with use of the internet. There is a 42" LCD TV for the projection of powerpoint for the trainer. The maximum number of people is 20 in the room.

3. Do give us one week notice if possible, so that we can check the booking and reserve for you in advance. But do contact us anyway if you have urgent need, and we will be happy to accomodate.

Idea on our Website

Reading the SHC website has become one of my daily habit. During the reading, I consider our website lack of two kindof postings.

  1. Durable posting except the personal profile
  2. Knowledgeable posting

Some friends told me that, now SHC has 3000 plus members and will become 10000 in the near future. All of us are over 45, and been involved in all kind of businesses, there should be a tremendous knowledge base inside our SHC, but seems that no one try to utilize it.

Use two scenarios to illustrate this problem

1.      When member A faced some problem, he does not have a channel to ask for help (advices) from our SHC. For example, if I have friends from Hong Kong, and I don’t know where to take them to visit and eat, how can I ask for advices from SHC, Of course, my one is trivial, there should be unlimited problems outside waiting for advices.

2.      When member B wants to share some of his knowledge, there is also no channel for him to do so. For example, Richard Lee shared his view on the CPF special account interest rate in the May gathering – retirement issues. If no this gathering, even Lee like to share also cannot.

So, I would like to propose SHC create a platform for members to seek help and for members to share what they want to share. Our website should be the best choice for this platform.

As time goes by, this will form a large knowledge database of our SHC. The information inside the database, after interpret, discuss, update will be more live, accurate, and useful. It will be a precious property of our SHC

The above humble idea suddenly comes to my mind. Write it down for consideration. Thanks.

Andrew Yeung

SHC’s Used PC Project

After a long wait, we are going to see the birth of this project. Rain or shine, the meeting is on. So far, I have 4 members confirmed attending (coincidentally, 1st cycling activity also started with 4. In Chinese, it means "yes" and "yes 4 sure"). Although this number is small, it is a good sign that we really want to see it happens.

Used PCs for SHC members Project

This is one of my favourite past times. I have been doing this since late 90’s on both personal and corporate basis.

I had personally encountered many elders like myself who have been deprived of owning a decent PC (at times even none) or rights to use one. They would also not foot out the money to get for themselves. Many a reason being that they afraid that they might offend or receive severe criticism from their children or friends.

I m just fortunate to have own not only one but three (a lappy and 2 PCs) numbers solely. My other family members have their own.

I believe its high time that I should push for such cause. Together with interested members here, we can help bring our non-IT savvy (dont know) members to the minimum level and not left behind in the digital divide.  Many may still not choose to pursuit but decisions are theirs.

Since all information about what’s happening in SHC is web-based, it would be good if members keep themselves updated by surfing the SHC’s homepage.  Being IT-savvy, it will give you an edge over getting information faster and better than those who are not. On the other hand, people cant take you as "handicapped".

So much for the blah blah blah. Let me take lead in what we can do with your help. We can go on a 2-prone direction by providing 1) hardware (PCs) and 2) software (home guided learning).

The Task –

1. Get members to donate their unwanted PCs.

2  Match and identify members (those who are not doing well or receiving no income and dont own any) who want to own the PCs.

3. Get members who wish or would like to provide home guided learning.

4. Match and identify members who need home guided learning.

5. Get members to form core group to refurbish the donated PCs at donors’ premises or otherwise.

Nothing is called achievement until the time you bring back the life of a machine that has reached its "EOL" (end of life).

Should we do not not to do, your responses are very important.

Volunteers to teach “Selling/Auctions on the internet”

This repeats a Post by Terence on 3 Aug 06. It says "We have a few volunteers to teach and coach this topic.  There might be some of you who would like to offer the same service.   if you are experienced in selling on ebay, Yahoo or other auction sites, and willing to spend some time with other SilverHairs who may be interested, please raise your hands here.  Those with online payment experience also appreciated.
The small group would form among themselves in max 6 people.  The location will be their apartment/house, and they would have their own PC, broadband and digital camera.  Session 2 hours.
So, if you would like to volunteer, raise your hands here.  Hopefully, you will get to meet new friends too with common interests."

So far, 5 members had responded to do or assist in the teaching  with only 11 responded to learn. To all other members who wish to learn, dont feel shy to come forward and put your names here. We dont want you to be left behind in the digital divide.
