Patrick Chan – Profile

Hello Everyone,

Just a brief profile to introduce myself, having joined some months ago.

The Stars-in-Concert was my first attendance which I  thoroughly enjoyed and got to meet some nice people too.  I was warmly welcomed by Ms Susan Chan (at the door) and other members like Ms Lily Ho including Mr Terence Seah, the man who started it all.

I find the SHC a great platform for fellowship, free to choose activities and most interestingly a very vibrant forum posting community.  E.g. I enjoy reading the hilarious lines and wisecracks of Mr Tim Liu who got me into stitches at times.

Like some of you, I am a ‘baby boomer’ (those born between l947 – l957) now retired from active business after having been involved in the Retail, F & B , Entertainment & Logistic industries for sometime.

My current social interests involved supporting the grass root activities of community clubs, charity shows, concert hosting, stage managing and emceeing (MC) of events.

Also, just for the kicks and to entertain myself (and friends) I formed a 5-piece Pop band where I’d sing and play the electric guitar.  Playing with the guitar was my first love affair – at age 14.  Now, me and my band ( Pat & Patricians) would ‘rock it up’ once a week in our own Music studio at a community club.

We play a genre of songs and guitar instrumental hits ‘down memory lane’ of the 60s, 70s & 80s.

I  love to play hits from the likes of The Beatles, CCR, Bee Gees, Rollin Stones, Deep Purple, Scorpion, Eagles, Bread, Doobie Brothers, Simon & Gar, Eric Clapton, John Denver, Rod Stewart, shakin Steven, Boney M, Carpenters,  Cliff Richard & Shadows, Jumping Jewels and of course the King of Rock n Roll – Elvis Presley & more !

At times, I get invited to play and sing at entertainment pubs, charity shows, members club, cc, concerts  and other social events.

Its a wonderful and splendid feeling if you sing from your heart or hear songs that you once so cherished.  Its like ‘yesterday’ once more.  Personally, I find it very therapeutic.

So,  if any fellow members who’d like to sing, play the guitar (keyboard/drum), dance (rock n roll, disco rock, chacha, rhumba, waltz, country line etc) or just want to relax and ‘gelek gelek’ –  you ‘re most welcome to join me in my ‘musical jam’ down memory lane.

Meawhile, here’s wishing all SHC folks a Rollin Good Time ahead.

Regards,

Pat Chan

Education services as a source of income

For some time already, some SHCians have dwelled on the topic of providing education or tuition services, as a source of income, when one go into retirement.  Of course, today, it is not necessary to be retire to provide tuition service services.

Recent ideas include education for children, conversation English for foreign students, proficiency lessons, a tuition club, etc.  Let’s use this Post to discuss.  There is no right or wrong ideas, practical or fluid ideas.  Please respect each others opinion.  Write it here; and other like-mind will join in.

The objective is at the end of this, a number of SHCians can get together, and make the business of education viable.  We will use the information and discussion here to determine interests and viability.

Monthly walk: Sat 14Feb

Dear SHCians!

14th February….. Let’s think about love and friendship.  A Japanese once told me that in Japan it is also referrred to as Tomo-choko (???)
Tomo meaining friend; choko meaning chocolate.  Got the ‘hint’? …make this a Memorable Valentine’s Day!       emoticon

You are invited to a KOOL date….. to explore our Singapore’s latest downtown icon; the 1st reservoir in the heart of the city!
the magnificient MARINA BARRAGE!

This unique 3-in-1 provides:
1)  Water supply — will increase our local water supply source,
2)  Flood control — being a dam built across the Marina Channel to keep out seawater and
3)  New Lifestyle attraction — ideal for all kinds of recreational activities; set to become an integrated watersports hub and
premier tourist attraction.

A WALK THAT IS DIFFERENT !  An opportunity to        emoticon
(i)  "Walk on Water" by crossing the dam across the Marina Channel.
(ii) "Stand on a Green Roof"  to view our city skyline with the sea as your backdrop; definitely, a view with a great difference!
(iii) "Stroll in the park"  enjoy the fountains in the open central courtyard, watch kids running through the community water playground.
(iv)  an intriguing gallery awaits….. must try, must see…
(v)  have a "Picnic at the Barrage"  ….BYO picnic basket.  Yes, it is allowed but NO Littering & CLEAN UP! before you leave.

Date: Saturday, 14 February 2009   (in case, you didnt get the date right …) haha

Leaders for this walk: ChristinaCL Chan & Charles Chua

Duration:  less than 2hours; you may stay as long as you wish but, do catch the Last Bus out.
**Last Bus from Marina Barrage: 9.00pm

Meeting Point & Time: Entrance to Marina Barrage Main Lobby at 4.30pm sharp.

Though the Barrage is completed; the area directly around it is still under heavy construction.  I had recced this place 3x.  There are
shady roads but I believe no one would want to walk along the dusty roads where trucks with sand, stones rumbled past….
So, for the safety of all, take the MRT!

How to get there:
MRT Station:  Marina Bay, EXIT B, walk straight out, turn right to the Pick-up stop to board the Free shuttle bus service to Marina Barrage.
The shuttle is approx at 10 minute intervals, subject to traffic conditions.

Those who drive:
from ECP Exit 17A;
from AYE Exit 18;
from Cross Street/Central Boulevard;
from Maxwell Road/Marina Boulevard(NTUC Centre);

THEN travel on…. Marina Station Road/Marina Place/Marina Mall/Marina Grove/Marina way to Marina Barrage entrance/carpark. Free parking.

What to bring:

Your camera!
A shawl or something to keep you warm, might get chilly at sundown.
Sun visor or cap(hold on to it, lest it is blown away).  There are shades but one might not get a good view.
Bring umbrellas, but hold on to it lest it is blown away!

NOTE:
A cafe serves light snacks & from Sundown it will be a pub with ‘live’ music & serves finger food.
A restaurant serves ala carte dinner.

SHC monthly gathering – Sun, 15 Mar 2009

For planning purposes, the March monthly gathering will likely be held as follows:

  • Venue:  Somewhere in Little India Civil Sports club @ Tessensohn Road  Likely to be changed again.
  • Date:  Likely Sun 15 Mar 2009.
  • Time:  1500  – 1900 hrs.
  • Entrance:  Free, except if buffet and drinks needed.
  • Dress code:  As you would wear on a Sunday.
  • Event Organiser:  Will be announced at a later date.

We have not had a Sunday monthly gathering for many moons.  To cater to those who have been missing during the weekday gatherings, this event will be held on a Sunday.  It will revolve around getting to know one another, activities with a pool view and plenty of fresh air.  If organised properly, there will be a sound system, with DVD player, music and amplifier.  Enough seating for everbody, to chat.  Focus will be new and old members.  For those who have no lunch, the thinking is to have a little buffet or a BBQ.  And, if you love to sing, I think there are opportunities too.  Now, all these thinking is still at thinking stage.

For new members, and old members, please keep this date.  Details will be available after the Feb monthly gathering.

Meantime, I like to start to look out for a number of SHCians to help make this event fun.  If you are fun, not very serious, always with a smile, colourful and helpful.  One of my philosophies is "A little disorganisation" is fun.  It’s fun to be a SHCian.  Please raise your hand.

Check this out – Laughter Exercise

Hi Folks – Gong Xi Fa Cai! May all your wishes come true!

I meant to post this notice in Dec last year. But anticipating that SHC folks would be busy with preparing for the festivity of Christmas, I decided to wait a while. Then, came January, and again, I did not post this notice thinking that SHC folks would be busy preparing and celebrating CNY.
Then, in Feb, there will be the Yunnan trip led by Feztus, and come March/April there are other trips led by other SHC folks. If I don’t post the notice now, I guessed I never will.  I was aiming to have the maximum impact with this notice. That is – to reach as many SHC folks as possible.
Here is what I would like to share with you:

Subject: Laughter Exercise

  • Venue: Horticultural Park (Hort Park), 33 Hyderabad Road, Off Alexandra Road.  Go to the “Circle of Bamboo”.
  • (Buses to Alexandra Road: 51, 57, 93, 97, 100, 166, 175)
  • Date and Time: Every Tues 6.30p.m.
  • Dress code: comfortable footwear, casual ‘cool’ clothes.

Reminder: Those of you who are mosquito magnets, please remember to use insect repellant.
More info: Hort Park is a beautiful and peaceful garden. You may wish to take a stroll before or after the exercise. It starts promptly at 6.30p.m. If you are 15 minutes late, you’ve missed half the exercise.
This exercise is suitable for whom?

Any one – young or old, male or female, fat or thin. It is a light and fun exercise. There were families who came in three generations: grandparents, parents and their children. There was an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair pushed by his elderly loving wife. There were old retirees, and there were young adults coming in after work hours.

Because it is free and easy, (no registration required), sometimes the crowd was quite big. More than 30 people. Some Tuesdays, only a handful turned up – about 10 people.

Other info: We all know that “laughter is the best medicine”.
This laughter exercise originated in India, and has spread to the rest of the world.  Some business corporation paid big bucks to hire the trained laughter exercise facilitators, to teach their employees to laugh away their stress, and thereby, be more productive.

And guess what?
This lady, a trained laughter exercise facilitator, is conducting the exercises for FREE! Yes – FREE! FREE! FREE! She is in her sixties, very zesty, warm and friendly. I later learned that she started this free laughter exercise program in Sep 2008. Make time to check this out. You have “nothing to lose, all to gain”.

If you’d like me to show you where is the “Circle of Bamboo”, I can meet you at the lobby to lead you there. Email me jacqhan@gmail.com

Giving To Charity

It is nice to know that there are many charitable people in SHC. I hope the spirit of giving will continue because it is fun and you get a sense of peace. Singaporeans in general are alway quick to give money to international disaster relieves and whenever there is a hard-luck storey in our local newspapers. Many people are happy to give to baggers and monks in our streets, even when street bagging is illigal here.

But very often I observe major confusion with giving for charity and trading for better returns. When we give to charity, by definition, it should be a one way traffic with no personal returns other than…feel good.

Many years ago, my wife literally picked up a dirty old man living in Pulau Ubin. The man was about 80 years old with totally no income. He lives in an abandoned and delapidated school building. The village people give him free food regularly but he has no toilet facilities and walking is difficult for him, so he does not clean himself and defecate near where he sleeps. With the help of a few volunteers, the man was cleaned and eventually put in an old folks home. He had $800 ‘coffin money’ which he carefully guarded. The money was passed over for safekeeping to the Old folks Home Administrator. We visited him regularly, but as he gets older and becomes senile, he starts scolding us and accuse us of stealing his money each time we visited. The adminterator always laugh it off but I was young and felt indignant. Eventually we stop visiting the man.

Now, that I am older and becoming senile myself I come to realize that I was not really  charible because I had actually expected gratitude in return. If I was really giving for charity,  I should not have been affected by his scolding and continue to give……like the Administrator do.

When we give and hope to go to be honoured or go to heaven or gain merit points for better rebirth, is it charity or trading?

I recently made a tedious detour from my trip in Northern Thailand to see if I can help an orphanage started by a Singaporean. About 100 meters before the village there was eracted a huge religious icon announceing the village and its orphanage. When I reached the village there were even more religious icons everywhere but I see no children in the orphanage. We ask the few people people around and they say ‘sometimes there are children’. It is obvious that the Singaporean has been very successful in propagating his religion but I did not see the same level of emphasis in looking after disadvantaged children.

Again, is this charity or has charity been used to spread religion?

It is always a big concern now whenever we give, whether we had made the sacrific to the correct cause and whether the money has gone to the correct people. But we must also ask ourself if we have done the  sacrifice in good faith or just trading.

Let’s hear you views.

Not the best news after CNY; but can SHC come up with some ideas in place?

A few of us have shared the concerns of losing jobs, recession, declining retirement investments and further bad news.  I think the really bad news is that recovery will take a long time.  This morning in today’s Straits Times, smacked right on the front page is the heading "Over 90,000 jobs lost" over the last two days in Europe and the US.  Some of our fellow members have already lost their jobs; while others saw no bonuses or pay increases.  The positive side may be the $20b, budgetted to save jobs and increase public spending.

I am always of the view that some SHCians have good ideas, and can put some of these ideas in place, if there is consolidated effort.  If you have an idea or a plan that would help other fellow SHCians financially, please share your thoughts here.  I dont mean putting monies in angpows and giving them out.  Ideas can include some form of income generation eg small businesses, group buying, organising training sessions, flea markets, online selling, starting F&B outlets, etc.

If you have an idea that is genuinely yours, and are determined to get it started, to earn some good income, I am sure some of us will pool in together to join you.  And, if you have some job offers, yeah, that can also be good news, for some of us.

The forum is open, and you are invited to share your thoughts.  Please respect the opinion of fellow SHians.  And, stay positive in your thoughts, solutions are possible and available.

Happenings in Perth

Hi SHCians

Thought I will post some happenings that that you can join in when you are here in Perth. These include:

Mar – fishing again at Cervantes, maybe with Mary joining in. Buying of lobsters if still in season.
Ongoing fishing at various places and golfing.
Self-drives.
Aug/Sep – My Self-drive across Nullabor Plain to Adelaide, Great Ocean Rd to Geelong, Victoria, etc and back to Perth.

There are 4 of us here – self, Mary, Linda and Hou Chong. So you can join up and also meet some of our friends here. Quite a number came from S’pore, Malaysia etc. So far, Mary and I are into fishing and I have  yet to do other things eg golfing, visiting markets etc with Mary and the rest.

I’m very certain the Apr group led by Terence and Mary will have lots to do and see here.

In the Mood for Love?

Gong Xi Fa Cai to all SHC Members!

My bi-monthly lifestyle magazine "Silver Lining" finally went to press in December and we have just finished our 2nd issue due to hit the news-stand on Feb 1st.

February issue will carry a "Love" theme and while I was commissioning the stories to our pool of writers, we ask a married friend to write a story about LOVE and ROMANCE for the Feb issue.  Her immediate response was "when you’ve been married as long as I have, you are more likely to bash your partner over the head with a saucepan than woo him with a candlelight dinner"!!

It will be interesting to hear your perspective on this topic – whether you are married, divorced, single or widowed.  An appropriate topic since we will soon be approaching Valentine’s in a fortnight’s time :)  So what does Valentine mean to us, the Silver Hairs?

BTW, I would be happy to give out complimentary copies of our Feb "Love" issue to all SHC members.  Interested, please drop me your contact.

Viewpoint on prostitution

Now that some of us are going to visit a brothel in Karimon, it is good time to get your views on Prostitution.

We are all brought up to shant prostitues. They are  the scorn of almost all societies. They are evil people with no morale. They break up families, spread deceases and are shameless. Many religions forbids protitution as a profession or using this service.

To prostitute oneself is to sell your body in exchange for money or other  benefits. When a parent arranges for a daughter to merry a rich man or when a girl chooses a man for financial security we call them ‘clever girls’.

I can only think of 2 reasons why a women would want to bcome a prostitute. First, There are women who required to sell their bodies because that is the only way they or their family can survive. Secondly there are those who choses it simply because it is a better option than doing ‘proper’ work.

The women in the first category must be honurable. They work is hard for their money. They not only endure dirty old man but also the social disgrace and scorn they receive from proper ladies and men.  They do not resort to stealing or cheating.

The group of people that chooses to be prostitutes, they do it after assessing their own assets and weight their options. This is a same as what we all do when we choose a job or career. You do what you are interested and/or can give you maximum returns in wealth and happiness. It is a job, perfectly legal in Singapore. It is legal because it does not infringe on the rights of other citizens.

If we consider morals, the bankers at Lehman Brothers and corrupt politicians, they are by far much worst. A prostitute can show as much as she/he can to the buyer and the buyer gets what he pays for. A prostitute may transmit a desease to the customer but the customer can avail himself with protections. A banker and politician would deliberately take advantage of people by lies and deceits and yet we regard them with high esteem.

Does prostitution provide a service to the community? I think they must do, otherwise we would not see it florishing in all countries even in those that make it illegal.

I have difficulty figuring out what is so wrong with protitution, but I would not want my children, if I have any to be protitutes because they will pay a high price being marginalize by society. But why?

Feel free to share with us what you are doing or have done today

Charity Lunch – 24/1/09 Updates…..

After a long wait, today, 24/1/09, the first SHC Charity Lunch finally closed its chapter liao..

I would like to take opportunity to thank all volunteers who turned up today to help out.  It really had been a very chaotic day for all of us there.  But am glad that all obstacles were overcame by all of you, 3 cheers to all of you… :)

Oi Cheng and me had met up with the representative of the adoptive home for numerous discussions and the headcount had been kept changing.  You knew, everytime, they told us abt headcount getting lesser and lesser, our hearts really dropped but we still intend to keep the spirit ongoing hence we kept mum on this.  Even till Friday nite, they still called us on headcount change but in the end, we were told that there will be 180paxs attending this lunch.  Poor OiCheng as she had to take charge of logistics, she had to liaise with the supplier on these changes numerous times and just last nite, she had to go NTUC to get more goodies to ensure that all these folks will definitely get their goodies bag as promised.

I was hoping that we can hv more interactions with these folks for this event but were unable to do as the Centre was really short handed.  I supposed it was too close to CNY and their regular volunteers had to do their chores at home instead.  So today, SHCians were seen helping out in laying out tables, packing of goodies bags, dish washers, waiters and waitresses, singing nightingales, sweepers and music controller, photographer.  But I believed that all of us enjoyed our day very much right??

I knew that some of you had doubts on the needy but I did make a check with representative and confirmed that they were indeed under their adoptive care.  So I hope these confirmation can cleared those in doubt.

As this is first time that SHC had such event, so one would expect abit disorganized lor, tio bo?  But most important, I am sure that we do had a frutiful day, right???

The balance of these goodies bags, Thomas, Lily, Oi Cheng, Helen and me had helped to transport them to be donated to Ju Eng Snr Citzens Home (Jln Kayu) as requested.  Maybe hor, Thomas can be the next EO for this home lor.. hehehehe… ai mai, Thomas?

Be it chaotic, fun or tiring, my sincere thanks to all volunteers, contributors and supporters cos I am sure without you, folks, this event will not be able to materialise at all… Cheers and Chinese New Year… Dolly

Dengue fever advisory

Subject: FW: *TRAVEL ADVISORY* – MALAYSIA : INCREASE DENGUE FEVER CASES

ISOS has issued a medical alert on the increase of dengue fever in Malaysia. Four deaths and more than 1,630 cases were recorded nationwide from January 4 to January 10. The state of Perlis showed a 150% increase followed by Sabah, Kelantan and Penang. Kuala Lumpur showed a 50% increase in the number of cases.

The Disease

Dengue or "break-bone" fever is a viral disease found in tropical and sub-tropical areas. There are four strains, DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4. It is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. This insect bites during the day and is often found in and around human habitation.

Symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headache, cough, and joint and muscle pain. A rash often follows these symptoms. The acute illness can last up to ten days, and complete recovery can take two to four weeks.

Occasionally, a potentially fatal form of dengue called dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) occurs. DHF  usually occurs in patients who have previously been infected  with one strain of dengue fever, then contract a different strain of the disease.

There is no vaccine against dengue fever. Preventing mosquito bites is the only way to prevent the disease.

Prevent bites while outdoors:

      ·         Wear light-colored clothing that covers most of the body (long sleeves and long pants).

Use insect repellent that contains DEET. Adults and children more than two months of age can use preparations containing up to 35% DEET – the higher the concentration, the longer it repels. Longer acting preparations are also available. Re-apply after swimming or excessive sweating.

Prevent bites while indoors or asleep:

·         Check that there is fly-wire on the windows.

·         Use "knock-down" insect spray to kill mosquitoes in your room.

·         Use mosquito coils or electric insecticide vaporizers if mosquitoes can get into your room.

·         Note that air conditioning also repels mosquitoes.

·         Consider using a bed net impregnated with pyrethrin.

Seek medical attention if you develop a high fever, especially if you suffer "rigors" (shaking) or a rash.

If need read about Dengue fever cure posted by Maggie Teo about ‘Papaya Juice (from the leaf)  as a cure’.  .

Cheers
