Use Tennis balls to relieve stress and tension

Hi All

People who saw tennis balls on my bed are often puzzled and asked why?

I accidently discovered this trick and it had helped me and so would like to share this simple tricks with you folks who might be interested. It cost nothing – only the tennis ball and the weight of your body will do the trick. It is relaxing and it’s easy to do.

Get hold of any tennis ball/s – it doesn’t have to be new. Used and discarded ones will do as long as it is still in one piece and firm. You can start with one or 2. I use two.

For the shoulders :
– Lie on your back on your bed (your mattress should be firm and not too soft). Place tennis ball/s between your shoulder blades and relax your arms to the sides. Relax and you will immediately feel the relieve of tension on your shoulder. You can even fall asleep in that position.

– Wiggle a little and you will feel the massaging effects.
– Raise both arms straight in front of you and draw circles in the air (you will hear crackling sound. Where the sound comes from?…. who care?…. as long as you feel shiok).

You can use the same method for the lower part of your back, or lie on your side and place 1 ball in the hollow of your hip (between the hip bone and the thigh). This will relieve the “sng” feeling.

For the neck :
– In the lie back position, place 1 tennis ball on the spot at the back of your neck where you feel tension….. because the back of your neck is not as broad, you will need to hold it in place with your hand or place the ball in your palm.

For the leg :
– In standing position, place tennis ball under the arch of your right foot. Try rolling the ball in small circles while still standing, weight on the left foot. Not so easy to do but will help with blood circulation of the legs. Repeat with the left foot.

Try it. Hope it help. If you tried – share your feedback so others and I can learn from it.

:)

Keeping in touch with the working world

work6work5work2 work1   Dear members,

Today. many members are still working, either because we are still young or because we would like to continue working. Others have retired after having worked many years in certain industries and in certain positions. But, we still have the knowledge, experience, contacts and skills. Some of us would still like to be in contact with the working and business world.

SilverHairsClub has been very successful with social activities. For example, the walk and cycling groups have been running for years. Our monthly gatherings have been ongoing for many years. We also have many dinner & dance, potlucks, karaoke, singing and social chit chats. Many members have found friends and have come together to travel to various countries. Small groups, and bigger ones, have gathered together for private parties, travel and functions. The social part of SilverHairsClub has been achieved.

Besides getting to know more friends for social reasons, many of us would also like to know friends who have been in the same industry and in similar positions. We have worked a good part of our career. Well, it would be a good time if we can cater to the work, career and business interests of members.

We all come from different industries. Construction, medical, transport, F&B, Hotels, media, IT, Retail, import export, banking, etc.

Many of us have been in positions of management, sales, marketing, administration, HR, enginnering, business, etc.

We could have regular gatherings of different members from different industries and positions. We can exchange business cards. We can introduce ourselves and our background to one another. The club can invite other external organisations to co-organise the events. The opportunities are up to individuals, depending on your interests.

If you are interested to stay in touch with the business and working world, please send an email to shcexp@SilverHairsClub.com with the subject EXP and the following info:

Pickleball – Let’s Play This Sport Together

My name is Eric Leow, a new member to this Club.

I am playing pickleball for the last year and there are players who are playing this for the last 20 odd years. Many players across all skill-level have claimed that it would be “very hard” to stop playing the game, with some saying that they are “very determined” to continue playing.

Briefly pickleball is a hybrid of Badminton, Tennis and Table-tennis, a three in one game, played with a wooden, graphic, or composite paddles and a perforated plastic ball. It can be played on a normal Badminton court or on any hard surface. The net is lowered to 3 ft high.

If you find badminton, tennis or squash too strenuous for you, then pickleball is an excellent introductory game. It is very easy to learn and is quickly played and enjoyed by everyone, men, women, children and benefiting people at all ages. It is a low cost game. Badminton courts are easily available in our CC or sports hall. All you need is to buy the paddles and balls.

From my personal experience, I found that most pickleball clubs do not want to take in new players who have not play this game before.

I know the organizer of a pickleball club, and I think I should be able to convince him to recruit new players. Subject to SHCians expression of interest, I am considering to introduce pickleball and EO this sports here.

If this is on, it would be on every Tues and Thurs 9.30am to 12.30pm. However, if the CC required the use the hall for activities then that session will be cancelled.

You just need to get your own paddle, and contribute towards the purchase of balls. Not to worry about the amount, it is very affordable. It is about $3-$4 per month.

The place is in the vicinity of Hougang.

Expression of interest:

2. Jassmine Teo
3. Ann Giri
4. Kristy Quek

Can you share a lunch venue you know well?

lunch2lunch1lunch3

Hi everybody,

For members who are still working, we tend to have our gatherings in the evenings and on weekends.

For members who are not working, we tend to meet during daylight hours. We tend to avoid evening hours. No beers and loud music.

To many, Saturdays and Sundays are considered family time, so weekend activities suit some.

What about lunch time? Everybody needs to eat. Some of us have lunch 12-1pm, others 1-2pm. Retirees and those whose hours are flexible can go out lunch 12-2pm.

Our monthly gatherings are usually on a weekday, between 4pm and 8.30pm. Sometimes, we try weekends. I don’t remember we having a lunch time gathering.

Do you know of a cosy place that we can meet? Frequency: once a week. For a start, we can consider any weekday 12-2pm.

1. Have lunch at the venue, maybe $6-10 @ person (I pick this number from the air). Lunch could be single dish with Tea/coffe or a set lunch with a soup, main and Tea/coffee. The venue decides the food.

2. Must be near a MRT station, without need to change to a bus, etc. We have limited lunch time.

3. Free seating, and confirmation of the number of Pax, one day before the lunch. Give the venue time to arrange the food.

4. Participants open to SilverHairsClub members, booking of lunch one day before the actual lunch date, and pre-paid.

5. Members can bring friends. Friends and non-members pay $2 per Pax, over non-member’s lunch.

6. Objective of this lunch is to facilitate members getting to know other members, and their friends. Can also bring parents so that they get to know one another too. We have to break the loneliness in our life when we get older and retire.

If you cook or can organise the food, and know of a venue, again meeting the above criteria, this can also be considered.

If you have been to a venue that meets the criteria, please mention the place here. You can also whatsapp me or speak to any of member whom you know.

SilverHairsClub believes that when members and seniors gather together, they will finally find common interests and friends. The rest is up to you.

12 Days Mount Everest Tibetan Plateau (9 – 20 June 2014)

I have looked at more than 15 Tibet packages and was looking for one that include Mt. Everest in the itinerary. Most travel agencies offer 9 or 10 days packages that do not include Mt. Everest. The reason is that a side trip to Mt. Everest base camp will add $400-$500 more to the package and there is little demand for it. Most people want a shorter and cheaper trip. So far, I have found only 1 travel agency that offer a 12D Tibet tour that includes Mt. Everest and the tour is confirmed. Let’s call this agency A.

For agency A, the departure date is 9 June, 2014. The cost is 2888 (package) + 350 (taxes) + 72 (tips) = $3310. It was more than I initially expected. But, after talking to the agent, I think the cost is justifiable and reasonable. She promised that there will not be any compulsory optional tour, no shopping tour and the cabin for the train ride is 4 to a room with soft beds. Some travel agencies provide 6 to a room with hard beds. For those with 6 in a room, the door cannot be locked (security is compromised) and the windows are dirty (cannot take photos through the window).

Beside the above mentioned travel agency, there are 2 other agencies that offer 12D Tibet tour with Mt. Everest. None of them have received any booking. Let’s call these 2 agencies B & C, and the details of the packages are given below.

B: Depart 5 June, Requires 10 to depart, Estimated cost $2900 (includes package, taxes, tips and compulsory optional tour), Shopping stops on the trip

C: Depart 5 June, Requires 6 to depart, Estimated cost $3050 (includes package, taxes, tips and compulsory optional tour), Shopping stops on the trip

In 2008, three of my friends (with one of them from Xian, China) have decided to visit Tibet in April 2008 on a Free n Easy trip. Due to the riot in March 2008, the Tibet trip was cancelled. Since we have already purchased our air tickets to Xian (we plan to take a train from Xian to Lhasa), we decided to fly into Xian and spend most of our time in Xian and the surrounding regions. At that time, we estimated the cost to be about $2000+ on a shoe string budget and plan to stay at budget inns.

So far, Jane Chua and I are confirmed going. If you are interested in any of the packages, please reply with your preference (indicating A, B, C or no preference), preferably asap as we have to make a decision soon. If we can get enough people, we can consider the lower cost package.

EO: Moon Wong

Day 1: Singapore Chengdu (L/D) CA404 SINCTU 0200/0630
Assemble at Singapore Changi Airport for our flight to Chengdu, provincial capital of Sichuan. Upon arrival, visit
Kuan-zhai Lane where is a conservation of old architectural structures that have been implanted with modern decoration in a bustling
Chengdu city. Enjoy Sichuan spicy hotpot for dinner. After dinner, proceed to check into hotel.

Day 2: Chengdu Nyingchi CA4431 (07:20/08:50) (B/L/D)
Transfer to airport for your domestic flight to Nyingchi. Nyingchi is also known as the Jiangnan of Tibet with an average
sea-level of 2,500m. After lunch, proceed to King Cypress Natural Reserve. King Cypress is located near the village of
Bajie, about 7km from the town of Bayi and it has a history of more than 2,500 years. In the afternoon, travel 70km north in
the Yunnan-Tibet highway to the fairty-tale world ‘Lulang Forest Area’ which is known as ‘Little Switzerland of Tibet’. It is
the most impressive is the forest of Tibetan cypresses of about 10ha at the Bagyai Village in Nyingchi County at 3,040m
above sea level. Take a distance look at Najiabawa Peak. The main peak of Nanjiabawa is 7,782m high and famed as “the
father of icebergs”. The Nanjiabawa Peak is the highest in the Prefecture of Nyingchi and the 15th highest in the globe. Its
colossal triangle body is covered with deep snow and mists all year around which makes people hard to see its real face.

Day 3: Nyingchi / Lhasa (8hrs drive to Lhasa) (B/L/D)
Before depart Nyingchi, proceed to the most beautiful Kadinggou. Drive over the 5,013m above sea level Mila Mountain and
arrive Lhasa. Check-in to hotel after dinner.

Day 4: Lhasa/ Potala Palace / Jokhang Monaster / Barkhor Street (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we begin our exploration of the famous Potala Palace, perched on the northern side of Morburi Mountain.
Throughout the ages, it had been the winter palace of Dalai Lamas. Its name means ‘sacred Buddhist site’ in Tibetan
language. This palace-like complex of buildings was first built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo to mark his
marriage with the Tang Dynasty’s princess Wencheng as well as to house the Buddha images brought by Wencheng and
the Nepalese princess Bhrikuti Devi. Over time, the palace was restored and expanded. The buildings are built of wood and
stone over 13 levels that span a height of over 117m, and a width of 400m from east to west and 360m from north to south.
The 130,000m2 architectural wonder has more than
1,000 gilded rooms and halls. The palace also houses priceless artefacts and artworks. Continue to Jokhang Monastery,
situated in the centre of Lhasa. It was first built in 674AD to celebrate the marriage of King Songtsen Gampo with Princess
Wencheng and Bhrikuti Devi, both devout Buddhists. This monastery underwent expansion over the years and today, its
four-level main hall sports a gilded roof and a blend of Han Chinese, Tibetan, Nepalese and Indian architectural styles. The
centre hall is supported by 20 beautifully carved wooden beams, while the under the eaves of the second and third levels of
the main hall are intricate sculptures of sphinxes and woodcarvings depicting animals. The corridors and halls are also
densely adorned with colourful murals of a total length of over 1,000m, which portray historical episodes and mythological
legends. Buddha images, including one of Sakyamuni at 13 years old, preside over the main hall, while the side halls feature
lifelike statues of King Songtsen Gampo, Princess Wencheng and Princess Bhrikuti Devi. Proceed to Barkhor Street in the
old city, which offers glimpses of traditional Tibetan life. The faithful chant and circumambulate around Jokhang Monastery.
In this circular street there are also shops selling a wide variety of crafts such as Tibetan knives, bangles, shoes and more.

Day 5: Lhasa/ Namtso Lake (B/L/D)
After breakfast, coach to Namsto. When you arrive Na Gang Kou, you can see the bright lake surface of Lake Nam-tso in the
western side. Follow the smooth road down the mountain, you may then see the lake. However, the road is heading for Nam
village government at the north side. You cannot see the other side of the shore of Lake Nam-tso..

Day 6: Lhasa / Yamdrok lake / Shigatse (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we depart for Shigatse. Along the way, we pass-by Yamzo Yumco Lake, whose name means ‘swan lake’.
Also known as Baidi Lake, it is wedged between two mountains, hence like a swan spanning its wings. The crystal-clear
lake, located over 4,000m above sea level, has an area of 638m2, about the size of Singapore. It is the largest freshwater
lake in Tibet, with a depth of up to 59m.

Day 7: Shigatse / Dingri (B/L/D)
In th morning, visit Tashi-Lhunpo Monastery, the largest monastery of the Tibetan Buddhist Yellow Sect and seat of the
Panchen Lama. This monastery, whose beauty is on par with that of Potala Palace, is located 2km west of Shigaze. It was
founded by the first Dalai Lama, Gyalwa Gendun Drup, in 1447AD. Its name means ‘all fortune and happiness gather here’.
Built against the mountain, this complex of overlapping buildings looks like a little town from afar. Covering 300,000m2, the
complex is enclosed by a wall of 1,500m. The oldest building is the Main Chanting Hall. Constructed over 12 years, it is
fronted by a courtyard where Panchen Lamas presided over Buddhist lectures. The courtyard walls are covered with
Buddha images. The Main Chanting Hall houses the Panchen Lama’s throne and several chapels, including a Sakyamuni
chapel, Bodhisattva chapel and Tara chapel. Don’t miss the Tenth Panchen Lama’s Stupa. The Tenth Panchen Lama was a
highly respected Tibetan Buddhist leader.

Day 8: Dingri/Mount Everest/ Shigatse (B/L/D)
Zhumulangma Peak (Chinese: ????? Zh?mùl?ngm? F?ng) or Mount Chomolangma – is the highest mountain on
Earth above sea level, and the highest point on the Earth’s continental crust, as measured by the height above sea level of
its summit, 8,848 metres (29,029 ft). The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in Asia, is located on the border
between Sagarmatha Zone, Nepal, and Tibet, China.
We’ll go to the highest Mount Everest nature protection area and watch sunrise by early morning.
After that going to Mount Everest station by walk, it will take about 1 hour. Feels the nature grandness, also may see
fortunately has Mount Everest flag cloud which like fire of the life flutters. Across the Mount WuJiaLa(5200 m), we can find
out Mount ZhuoAoYou (8201 m),Mount LuoZi(8201 m),and Mount MaKaLu(8463 m) around the Mount Everest. All the white
world, stand here, Life, even the whole universe is absolute reality.

What if we can raise $3m? How shall we do it? What shall we do with it? And how shall we safeguard this idea?

money3property 1property2money1money4 Besides holidays, dancing and makan, I am glad to see that there are others in our membership coming up and sharing their ideas, although they may not want to raise their ideas in the Club forum for members to discuss.  One main reason is being slammed down by experts and Mr Know Alls, even before the topic gets underway.  Sometimes, I wonder how some members know that I am in Singapore.  Well, I found out that if these members see that I have registered for an event, it is likely I am around that day.  I do make an effort to come for discussions, if my time permits.

This discussion is interesting; it had been raised before during the early days of the SilverHairsClub; but it had been slammed down due to I forgot what.  Start again.  We had discussions about a physical club and a place.  It has always been “Why not?  Members need a physical place to call home.  We never got anywhere.  Today’s property prices are high.  It may drop after cooling measures.  Prices may also go up and higher too because of limited land in Singapore, unless a major disaster happens.  During the recent business networking meeting, I had a chat wit a fellow member, who was looking at some properties.  What not we share to buy a property?  Maybe for investment.  Of course, there will be nitty gritties, risks and …., but we have so many experts within SHC.  We have so many members, maybe 50 or 100 are looking to invest in a property, something.  I dont want to over jump the options.  We have financial experts, property experts, bankers, … lawyers, and investors.  Some want to invest, others want  keep their money in the bank, and others put their money under the flower pot.

Let’s discuss an idea.  If, for example, we use a number of SGD 3m.  We aim to raise that number.  Let’s say we have interest participation for 40 people.  If this works, this would mean 75,000 per lot.  Let’s say we raise this over 6 months.  There will be 3m in the kitty. This will be one group.  They come up with options, buy backs, interests, the financial managers, etc.

Meantime, another group can look at what to do with the 3m.  Maybe, buy a commercial property.  Maybe take over a company or business.  Invest in a co-operative. Sure, if there is 3m, it is easier to talk.  Without, it will still be easy to talk. Perhaps, IvanL, you may have some ideas too. Maybe we can do something that will benefit us, through our SilverHairs years. So, the 2nd group looks at the investment opportunities.

I think we can have the last group, which will look at protecting the investors.  Many times, we failed in such discussions, because we are all talking about retirement money.  If it fails, what happens.  Are the pluses attractive vs the negatives.  Can we buy back?  Etc. I guess a lot to discuss.  Experts, experienced members, and ordinary members, how can we take this forward.

I think there some members will offer very negative comments and viewpoints.  While I agree there can be negatives, how about thinking how to make the idea work.  We have enough brains and expertise to fine tune the idea.

So, let’s use $3m as the target to raise to invest, look at what we can invest with 3m and finally how to safeguard our interest.

** Thank you to the people who caught me when I had some time in Singapore.  I love to listen to ideas. So, let’s start.

The SHC committee had a go for 6 months, and decided to disband with the committee concept

fun2monthly meetingfairy godmothershc-logofun3 fun4   Yesterday, the SHC committee had its last meeting. We concluded that the committee was redundant, and decided to do away with the SHC committee wef end Feb 2014.  I like to thank Lily Ho, Dolly Lim, Caroline and Geraldine for giving the committee a go.

We shall go back to our structure of EOs, ECs and some members holding certain tasks and responsibilities.  Unfortunately, you have to live with me and all other members, as before.

  1. Event Organisers (EOs) shall organise activities for members only, and have the full support of the Club. They have full say in their activities, as long as the event comes within the club rules.
  2. Event Coordinators (ECs) can share with members their activities, and their activities can be published, as long as they are participating personally in their events.  Non-members names are not allowed to be listed in this forum.
  3. Mention of non-members’ names and external organisations are not allowed in all events published here.

Let’s continue to have fun and plan for ourselves as we live through our SilverHairs years.

You can do so, after you have started a new Post. The Events Calendar is just below our web page banner.

Strictly for SHC members use only.

Travel venture

Hi All Members

Many of us travel and join tours, either package or free n easy ones. Some members are very knowledgeable about some countries as they spend years/months there.

I am wondering if Silverhairs can come up with, for a country: recommended sightseeing places to visit, shop, eat and also stay with costs, itineraries etc. With them as the contact persons and even acting, where possible as guides, I think members feel safer (especially travelling single, small group etc) as the contact person is another Silverhairs member.

Can this be handled by a travel coordinator/s in the club who is a keen traveller with time and perhaps even turn it into a business venture for himself/herself/themselves, catering to Silverhairs members?

Just an idea.

Here’s some thoughts on further relaxation into some of SHC policies

shc-logo

For a long time, we have been rather rigid on what can be done and cannot be done.  Our Club taboos are no discussions on politics, race, religion, sex, direct selling and MLM.  It is unlikely that we will relax our rules on no discussions on politics, race and religion.  At least, no for now.

Sex is a topic that is human, and I wish to clarify that “No sex” means “no discussions on “procurement of sexual servces”.  We have also relaxed in the area of direct selling, and this is limited to the Online Fleamart which comes out monthly, and products and services are of the non-corporate nature, and hosted by Jassmine Teo.  I would say Jassmine has done a good job, as our intention is to allow members to offer what they have at home.

Feedback from members have helped to streamline our thoughts on members’ businesses.  Most members are either still working and are enjoying a retirement life in some form of trading activities, casual sales or P/T work.  I hope to relax this area to enable members to offer some of their corporate products and services.  This can be tricky as we would not want to have direct selling and product offerings during our gatherings and in our forum.  A number of members have responded to our recent email on providing some of their company products and services at special offers.  As usual, and in principle, the Club will relax this policy.  Along the lines of how we operate the online Fleamart, I would also be looking out for someone who would be willing to run this service in our forum on a regular and monthly basis.  If you like to, feel free to write to me.  Questions ok.

SHC will go more agressive in ourn efforts to enlist Corporate members from either among the current membership or new memberships.  Free corporate membership is no longer available.  Members or companies wishing to be Corporate members can write to admin@SilverHairsclub.com.

On the registration of new and maintenance of old membership, please be inform that all members must have an username and password to enter SilverHairsClub.com.  If you have not registered to enter the Club, please do so.  The register link is on the top right hand side of SilverHairsClub.com.  If you have lost your password or username, please re-register.  The Club will no longer manually reset your password.

With effect from Jan 2014, your email address will be used as username.  Your password has to be at least 7 characters.  This will enable you to log in into the Club.  Members are reminded not to register any person whose membership has lapsed.  All members are encouraged to register and participate in the Club, using their own username (email address) and password.

Introducing new members to the general membership has been found to be useful as new members may not know how to walk around the SHC website.  Robert Ong has volunteered to take this role, and if you are very shy, and not sure how to post your intro,  well, get to know him.  He is very knowledgeable and helpful.  But, make sure you have your username and password first.

The new SHC committee has been trying hard to do a good job, maintaining the social requirements of members.  This is not easy, and it does take time for the committee and myself to sync in thoughts and actions.  Neither do I expect no changes.  Please be patient, and if you have any queries, do consult them.

Have a good week ahead.

Monica Lim-New member introduction

  • I am Monica Lim and has just registered with SHC as a member.
  • I have been working in Singapore Polytechnic for the past 40 years
  • Married with 2 grown-up daughters and have a grandson of 2 years and 7 months.
  • Love to sing and listens to  music during spare time and enjoys a game of “Mahjong” on every Saturdays
  • Appointment of Robert Ong in the role of “New members Relations”

We have always faced difficulties getting new members to introduce themselves in the Club.  Either they are shy, or they find it difficult to write an introduction about themselves in our Club forum.  Finally, they either not do anything about it or nobody knows about them.

We have tried to get our senior members to to take up this role; but unfortunately for numerous reasons, few members like to take up this role.  Well, after a long time, we have identified one.

He is Robert Ong, whom many of you know has been active, especially with the Easterly gatherings.  He is a strong supporter of SHC, its members and the Club’s culture.  Robert has good relations, is tactful and is a very considerate person.  He has agreed to take up the role of managing “New members relations”.  In this role, Robert will assist new members with introducing themselves to fellow members in the Club.  He will be able to write a new Post to introduce new members in the Club.  After membership approval by Admin, new members can write directly to him with the introduction.  More details will be given.

Thank you Robert.  And we look forward to your new initiatives.

    SilverHairsClub announcement

    Dear SilverHairsClub members,

SHC is considering the use of the email address as the login name to SilverHairsClub.com. This helps to ensure that you will always use an updated email address.

Please also use at least a “7 character” password.

This is an important change, so please take note of your current userid, email address and password before implementation.  Likely implementation date: Before 31 Dec 2013

SilverHairsClub is for you, and the Club will continue to provide a platform for you to make more and new friends. Come and participate.

    Announcement to EOs and ECs

    Dear members,

SilverHairsClub hopes that Singapore seniors can have a Club which is easy to join, and that the Club continues to run without any subscription fee.  This has been made possible because there are some members who have the same objective in organising activities as the Club.  We have tried for years to ask our members to organise an activity for members, at least once in the lifetime membership.  However, I must say the effort has not been successful, if not a failure.

Event organisers (EOs) and Event coordinators (ECs) as well as assistants put in a lot of time, expense and energy when organising activities for members.  The situation can turn bad as there are some members who loves to complain and criticise the organisers behind the curtain.  The EOs put in a lot of effort, time and money, and they pay the same amount as fellow participants.  They do not get to enjoy the activity but instead have to run around to make sure the activity runs smoothly.  Such situations are very discouraging, and do not encourage EOs and ECs to come forward.

We will have a slight change.  All EOs who organises events and activities for members pay the same as other members.  Whatever is balance will now be left to the discretion of the EO. The EO has to make sure that his budget is correct and understands the risks of additional costs.  So, for the EOs, you set the price for the event.  If you set too high, few will attend.  If you set too low, the attendance may be too good. If the EO wishes to have a dinner for his committee, it is his decision.  Unfortunately, if there is a loss, the EO has to bear the loss. Participating members decide individually if they would like to attend the event, at the price set by the EO.

ECs, please use your discretion as the Club leaves you to make any price decisions.

I hope this will encourage EOs and ECs to come forward, as we too do not want you to have losses, after running around and doing all the work.

    Deepavali

Someone just mentioned that Deepavali is 2 weeks away. I am ashamed that being a Singaporean, I have no Indian friend close enough to invite me to celebrate with them. We use to have an Indian kid as part of our gang in teenage years. We always look forward to his invitation at Deepavali because his mother cooks a really good Indian meal. Even up to today, we reminisce about it when we have old boys gathering. But this Indian friend did not get the message, he has since married a Chinese girl…. with all our help in the early days. He is now a Towkay and behaves more Chinese then me.

    SHC September news update, 2013

    Dear SilverHairsClub members,

Since 2005, SilverHairsClub has been running almost without much changes since day 1.  However, I have since become very busy with my work schedule and travel.  As you know, I have been looking for someone to take over the running of SHC.  This has not been forthcoming, and in mid Aug 2013, I have decided to pass the operations and most of the management of SHC to a committee.  The Club invited members to come join the committee, and a few members responded.  As of Aug 2013, the committee was formed.  This decision was taken after a brainstorm meeting on how to set up the SHC committee.  The thinking and planning are all documented and reported in the Club’s forum.

    shc-logo

The committee will manage the Club, instead of under a single person, myself.  A committee might be slower in response, but I believe it will be more efficient.  I hope to see more imagination and great creativity in the way, SHC runs.  Our aim is to have between 7 to 9 members in the Committee, under an elected Chairman.  This position of Chairman will be selected by the committee members.  A new Chairman will be decided on 01 Feb 2014.  Currently, we have only 5 committee members, namely Lily Ho, Caroline Gee, Geraldine Ting and Dolly Lim and myself.  While the committee will run the Club, each committee member has a specific role.  The current committee has a tenure of 2 years from mid Aug 2013.

I like to elaborate on the roles.

    1.  Geraldine Ting – this role aims to promote and increase website readership and participation of SilverHairsClub.com.  We have a readership counter, at the bottom of the website.  The Club leaves it to her imagination and creativity as to how to increase readership and participation.

Geraldine Ting also takes over the role of media contact.  She will be the sole contact with the media, and this role aims to promote SilverHairsClub to the public and external organisations.

    2.  Dolly Lim – this role is to increase our “One member, and one EO activity” target.  I like to make it clear that this role does not require the committee member to organise activities, although she may organise EO activities, as an individual member.  Again, the success of this role is depended on creativity and imagination.  It also depends on the support of all members.  If you have not organised an EO activity before, please speak with Dolly.  The monthly gathering is a strictly EO event.  EO events are strictly for members only. Something might just pop up.

    3.  Caroline Gee – this role is to increase and promote EC activities.  Many members have their own hobbies and interests.  If you organise an activity to share with other members and your friends, this is an EC activity.  EC activities are generally left to the imagination and creativity of each individual member.  If you wish, to share with other Singapore Silverhairs, your interests, organise an EC event or speak with Caroline Gee.  EC events allows you to interconnect your non-member friends with your newly found SHC member.  The aim here is to identify and encourage members to share their private interests, eg potlucks, crafts, tea sessions, etc.

Caroline is also the SHC committee secretary.  The Club committee meets once a month.

    4.  Lily Ho – this role requires the person to moderate, approve and resolve issues within the content of the SHC forum.  Lily can delete and moderate or change any text in the forum, with special emphasis on the club taboos and other current guidelines.  Lily jagas all spams and illegal entries in the Club.

    5.  Terence Seah – the current Chairman.  As agreed at the brainstorm committee meeting, this role will be appointed by the committee members, the next being 1 Feb 2014.  I shall give as much of the decision making processes to the 4 members of the committee.  I shall still continue to manage the PaperClips project, the Men’s night and the Business round table which have yet to kick up.

    6.  The 3 other roles to engage non-active members, finance projects and corporate membership are still waiting for someone to hands up. More details later.

So, please welcome the new committee members, support them and speak with them.  They have different ideas on how to manage the club, besides each of them having their own style of speaking and thinking.  Let’s give the committee a chance to work, for the next two years.

If you did not receive this update in your email, chances are your membership has lapsed or your email address no longer valid.  Check your Club profile and change your email address.

A counter has been added to the bottom of our website SilverHairsClub.com

Recently, Yew Kwong suggested that we add a counter to our website SilverHairsClub.com. Personally, I am reluctant to add the counter as it has negative implications too.  That’s why the counter was not added earlier.

In view of his wisdom, I have agreed.  A counter has been added at the bottom of our website.  This was added on the 15 Aug 2013, starting from 0000.

So, let’s try and monitor the counter.  Will be useful to our committee too.  Thank you Yew Kwong.

Silver Infocomm Day 2013 (aks SID) from 21 to 29 Sep 2013

    Chinese Ad

    English Ad

This is not an advertisement for another organisation but merely information for those who are keen to continue learning Infocomm Technology (IT) subjects. Each year, IDA will hold SID in the 3rd or 4th quarter of the year. People who are aged 50 and above are their targets. During this period, IT subjects relevant to today’s living are conducted at various centres like Polythenic and ITE. Subjects on various topics are offered at very cheap rates of $10 per session of 3 hrs (hope I remember correctly). Besides these offered subjects, participants can also participate in seminar and talks to enhance learning and get to know IT matters better.

Finding groups with similar interests has been identified as a priority. Register with SHC Interest groups.

Many members have identified yourself among certain interest groups eg dancing groups, travel groups, mahjong groups, badminton groups, cycling groups, etc.  However, some of you are still finding the groups that match your interests, hobbies and needs.

Your present individual membership does not have the details.  It is also quite labour intensive to help these groups form.  SHC has created a database of hobbies and interests.  If you like you can join the different SHC interest groups.  There is no requirement for you to join if you just wish to keep in touch with the club.

Below our web banner pictures, there is a button “SHC Interest groups”.  Click on it and let us know your interests.

Only members who participate in the SHC Interest groups will be identified with others of similar interests.

Existing members may register first.  New members who join us after the coming Membership drive can join in Aug 2013.

** Latest:  We shall no longer track and group members by interest groups due to lack of interest and participation.  May 2014.
